The Best Places to Eat and Drink in Santa Cruz, California | Eater SF

"This modern, seaside snack shack dishes up affordable, from-scratch, handheld meals across from Steamer Lane, the city’s most iconic surf break. A butcher paper menu lists Sharpie-scrawled items including salmon poke bowls, fresh fish tacos, and panini-pressed quesadillas such as the Break-A-Dilla with scrambled eggs, hash browns, queso fresco, and salsa verde. Nab one of the Adirondack chairs scattered among the park-like setting outside, or head to the benches overlooking surfers shredding massive swells." - Paolo Bicchieri

What a delightful surprise we stumbled on when we went to go use the bathrooms. On the other side of the bathrooms is this wonderful Cafe. I checked the reviews and they were high so we decided to give it a try. We enjoyed the Cod Sandwich, one of the bowls, a burrito and one of the dilla's. All the food was delicious and fresh and homemade. There's no dining inside. They have several picnic tables sitting outside the restaurant with a fantastic view of the ocean. They are very dog friendly. There is gluten free and vegan options. Wheelchair accessible as well.

Google
Nice location right by the Santa Cruz Lighthouse! We came to grab a drink after looking at the otters by the shore. I got a matcha… don’t really know how they could call it a matcha 😭 quite odd tasting. The coffee alright. We liked the seating outside through, our server was polite and the shop was quite pretty.

This is a very nice food stand! Very convenient spot to go to for people who are hungry and thirsty after a long stay in the state beach. They also have an outdoor area where people can dine. This place has all sorts of foods. They have these things calls Dillas, which is like smashed burrito or a quesadilla and burrito mash-up. So I decided to try one of them and have to say…it’s very good! Kinda hoping that they will slice mines into pieces haha. But it’s a burrito at the same. So it wouldn’t really make sense if they do lol I also like how the staff is only letting certain people come in to order depending on the party size. It could be because it’s very small inside and things can be crowded if people try to come in and especially come out. Again, very good spot if people want a craving after a long stay here!

Traveling through and wanted to spend an afternoon by the sea. This spot was perfect. Food is fresh and delicious. Had the poke bowl and will be dreaming about it. So good! Was able to enjoy lunch, painted some watercolors and watched the local surfers. 🏄🏽‍♀️ highly recommend.

Google
After a walk along the coast watching waves and surfers, smelling the salt air, it was time for lunch. This little place is friendly, clean, and the food is fresh. I had the salmon poke bowl. It was delicious and hit the spot curbing my hunger. And the price is right, with a canned juice it was under $20. Not bad for a beautiful day in Santa Cruz.

Google
Nice eatery a stones throw from Lighthouse Point in Santa Cruz. You order your food and wait outside for your name to be called. Picnic benches under the trees. The food is fair but limited. The main convenience is that it's the only place in that general vicinity to eat. The clientele was a mix of tourists, locals, and surfers. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there again but in a pinch it put food in our bellies before heading home from the coast. I wish them all the best.

Google
Easily my new favorite spot In town. Coffee was amazing, the smash burger was absolutely perfect (and only $8.60!), and the staff was super helpful and friendly. Thank you guys for an amazing experience. I’ll be swinging by numerous times a week now 🙌🌞

Google
Last year I tried the fish tacos, excellent. This year i had the smash burger and Turkish coffee both delicious.

Yelp
Steamer lane Supply Cafe is a nice cafe located across from the Santa Cruz seashore. There are picnic tables right next to it, making it very convenient. Smash burgers, Sandwiches, 'dillas, a long menu. Be sure to come in November, the monarch butterflies should be in the trees behind this spot. Safety Pluses - Online menu, Delivery services available, online ordering. Food Review: Pork Bowl ($13.25 GF) was decent but not exceptional. Meat wasn't the freshest. Having been biking for hours, I slurped it down anyway. 7.5/10 Iced Matcha ($5.25) was pretty watered down. 7/10 Overall - Good Food - Good Decor - Good Service - Good Value - Very Good Would we come back - Maybe

Yelp
I've had this spot bookmarked since forever and finally went the other day after taking our dog to It's Beach. This is the perfect spot to head after the beach since there are both bathrooms and wash off stations right behind it, and plenty of picnic tables to sit outside and enjoy the view. (no indoor seating, bring layers!) Plenty of food options for a small shop/shack with sandwiches, quesadillas, and bowls. Lots of quesadilla options, I'll need to try the breakfast quesadilla next time, but my husband just raaaavvved about the chicken quesadilla which looked super juicy with shredded chicken, and a well-crisped tortilla. Oh what did I think about it? No one saved me a bite it was so popular! I had the salmon poke bowl- which was fine... except the rice it came with was a bit dry, and the poke portion was pretty small, so if you get this, I'd get something else as well and I normally have a smaller than average appetite I liked the fish tacos and felt like they had a good amount of textures/toppings, but my husband felt like it needed more flavor. Anyway, happy we finally stopped by and will come back again after our next beach outing!

Yelp
Enjoyed this quaint and popular eatery located across the street from the beach and lighthouse with outside dining only. The fish tacos were amazing ! We will be back when we visit Santa Cruz again.

Yelp
Very good location, which makes it an ideal spot to grab something to eat while in the area. Since I was hungry, I was excited to grab something to eat. They have a lot of outdoor seating available and it was pretty busy with a line out the door. I ordered the Break-A-Dilla but I think the cashier misheard me and put in the Breakfast Burrito instead. I didn't realize this until after I paid, so I didn't want to cause any hassle. I took a few bites of the Breakfast Burrito and didn't enjoy it as much as I expected. Each consecutive bite tasted more and more bland. This was disappointing since I usually love breakfast burritos, so unfortunately, this place was a miss for me.

Yelp
Great amount of gluten free food. Had the fish taco! Amazing! An osprey sat on top of the building waiting for scraps. Eating is outside. The toilets are grim.
google avatar

Anna S.

Yelp
Wow! I was surprised after eating here. This is a very small place that makes delicious food. You will have to wait in a line but it goes fast and is well worth the wait. There is something for everyone. The portions are large, fresh and delicious. There are picnic tables to eat at or find a bench by the waster. This is a must to eat at!

Yelp
The.best.views. and one of our hidden gem spots to tuck away and take it all in..Steamer Lane Supply in Santa Cruz has delicious Dillas' as they call them, "toasty pressed burritos"...dare I say like a more gourmet Crunchwrap pocket of yummy goodness? I grabbed the Break-a-dilla which was loaded with everything you could ever want in a crunch - eggs, cheese, hash browns, salsa, queso fresco, and a bacon add-on. The hubby grabbed their hearty breakfast burrito and sneaking a bite, it was what you imagine eating pre/post surf..or just watchin' the surf in Santa Cruz. Solid. Packed with flavor and substance. Pure joy all around. I know breakfast burritos in SC are a dime a dozen, but when you find one that's just right, you have to share. Steamer Lane has only outdoor seating and a destination point no doubt. Friendly staff, great additional menu items like poke bowls, sandwiches, hot dogs, and delicious coffee. A perfect hub for grab-and-go, or sit and stay a while. We met a few other new parents on our breakfast trip, which was fun to have the opportunity to chat about all the things in such a stunning setting. For us this is a definite must when in the area ~ also fun fact, when sitting with your snack, you're right across the street from the world famous surf break "Steamer Lane", on West Cliff Drive.

Yelp
Great food. Awesome spot. Strongly recommend that chicken chipotle enchilada with brown rice. BUT ADD THE LOCAL CALIFORNIA HOT SAUCE TO IT it seals the deal. Would return it in the area
google avatar

Zee D.

Yelp
Nothing beats this location and flexibility of a to-go hot drink. I got a chai which was a bit weak -- well it was end of day. Despite a long line, the staff keep it moving so thumbs up!
google avatar

Yelp
We come here to the beach all the time but have never tried this place. I saw all the great reviews for fish tacos so decided to try. The tortilla was nice and toasted, the cabbage slaw was good with nice salsa. Everything was delicious except for the star of the show ... the fish. The fish was dry and the texture and appearance resembled smoked fish. Definitely not fresh and was made days ago or recooked several times. I also got a puppy frittata which my pup seemed to enjoy.
google avatar

Yelp
Don't miss the Nutella banana quesadilla situation. Delicious. Outdoor seating was lovely.

Yelp
It's a great grab and go place. They have fairly priced food and what we got tasted really good. Nothing mind blowing but super yummy and fresh nonetheless. I appreciate the care and quality that went into preparing the food, and definitely want to try more options in the future. A good place to eat if you are walking by or just finished a surf. Super family friendly and dog friendly. They even have dog treats at the counter. Plenty of outdoor seating so you can enjoy the absolutely stunning ocean view while you eat. Parking is a bit of an issue, but other than that things went smoothly as our food came out fairly quickly considering the long line at the time of our visit. Staff is super friendly and helpful. The inside ordering area is a little cramped, but if you can look around you'll find a good variety of ice cream, treats and drinks.

Yelp
Good food, good location. Enjoyed the tacos and the kimchi rice, but the favorite was the breakfast sandwich w/ sausage patty

Yelp
Great Breakfast lunch spot after a walk on west cliffs!! I love the poke bowls and the fish tacos! Also they have great coffee and pastries!
google avatar

Yelp
Such a great spot for a quick but delicious meal with a view! The service was kind and the food was fresh and really affordably priced. There are some outdoor tables and you can also bring your food to eat near the water!
google avatar

Yelp
Always love this place. Yummy affordable bites while you enjoy the fresh air. Perfect for a little lunch date.

Yelp
Beautiful outdoor seating with ocean views under cypress trees, tasty food, good prices, and food served fast. This is a great brunch/lunch spot. We had veggie tacos, fish tacos, and quesadillas. Everything was delicious and just right. The quesadillas were fat with ingredients and grilled just right. The corn tortillas for the tacos were also good. You will need a fork for the tacos because they are filled to the brim and a little messy. They also have little baked egg cups, muffins, café drinks, and aqua frescas. It's a great casual California Coast cuisine spot. Free parking available in a couple of large public lots nearby.
google avatar

Dorothee G.

Yelp
A bit pricy, but to be expected for a highly touristy spot. Their fresh berry muffins are beyond amazing! Also tried their poke bowl which was pretty good, but small for the price. Fun and easy spot for a quick meal facing the ocean :)
google avatar

Yelp
Convenient & cute spot right by the coast in Santa Cruz, and it was pretty busy at lunch time on a weekday. A lot of outdoor seating. Service is okay, some of the waitresses were a little rude but nothing egregious. The reason I'm giving two stars is the tofu bowl had rice that was fully uncooked in some patches of the rice--it would alternate between rock solid grains and cooked grains, making it really difficult and unappetizing to eat. The tofu was also seasoned a bit blandly--overall the bowl was not worth the money ($14? I think?) and I had to add a decent amount of sriracha and soy sauce for it to taste okay. The matcha was pretty good though and I liked the cardamom spice. Overall, don't get the tofu bowl.
google avatar

Bob C.

Yelp
Great food, variety. Lots of picnic tables seating. Or, take your food across the street to a cliff edge bench. But ya, the food is really good and worth the wait if there's a line!

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place on our recent trip to Santa Cruz. After exploring a little bit we were ready for some food and judging by the lines and Yelp rating we decided to give this place a try. There is a large outdoor picnic area with benches and tree trunks that makes it for a fun play area for the kids. Here is what we got: Fish tacos : 3/5 - the tacos were a bit disappointing as they lacked flavor Chicken leg plate: 5/5 - the chicken was perfectly confit. Nice and tender and perfectly seasoned. The slaw was quite good as well. Tuna sandwich: 5/5 - this sandwich was delicious. My 5 year old finished the whole sandwich. It has the right crunch from coleslaw & pickles and the tuna salad was very flavorful. Fries were delish and so were the chips :) Overall I would recommend this place esp if you have kids and prefer outdoor dining ;)

John B.

Yelp
You can't beat the location, especially on a warm day. This is mainly a lunch place, though you could go there for a late breakfast or early dinner, as the hour most days are from 8am to 6pm. There is a decent selection of food items such as sandwiches, poke, tacos, etc. Drinks include sodas (no alcohol), coffee, chia, hot chocolate, etc. While food is good, the portions are very small for the price. Dinning is all outside, with just a few tables. Generally, people will share a table. Often, we just take our plate across the street to enjoy watching the surfers, while we eat.
google avatar

Mark F.

Yelp
Some boxes were checked: Every family member said we HAD to go there. There was a long line at lunch. Both of those would indicate this is a great place. Unfortunately it was not. We ordered two Salmon Poke Bowls. They should have been called Cabbage Bowls. They really like cabbage here. It's in everything. The poke bowls were small to start, and filled with about 60% cabbage. That left room for about a 1/4 cup each of salmon, brown rice and seaweed salad. The salmon was cut into tiny cubes and was of a slimy texture that says "not fresh." Yes, it also smelled fishy. Yuck. Another person in our party ordered a smash burger bowl. About 1/2 the burger was raw, which is tough to do with a smash burger, as they are thin by definition. As to service, the order taker was very friendly. Another worker was quite surly when we stood beyond her line while waiting. Hard pass next time...
google avatar

Sophie C.

Yelp
Hard to beat this location... views out to the lighthouse and Steamer Lane. All outdoor seating, and service is quick! You order first and are given a buzzer to retrieve your food. Prices are pretty good and the food all seems fresh and healthy. I loved my tofu bowl, although I thought the portion was a bit small. My friend got the breakfast quesadilla which looked delicious and was a bigger portion. Definitely a fun place to take friends visiting.

Yelp
Second time walking by this spot. Don't let the line intimidate you. It moves quickly. Ordered Rock Codilla, ice turkish coffee, and cookie. Loved the Rock Codilla. Wish it had a little less sauce, but overall was great. Came out hot. Great dill flavor. The Turkish coffee had the perfect amount of cardamom. The drink was served in a paper cup, which quickly got soggy. I did not enjoy the cookie. It was very crumbly. The texture was gritty. Ended up throwing away 95% of the cookie. Dog friendly outdoor seating. Limited seating. Cashier offered dog treats at ordering. Nice spot to grab a bite after a coastal walk.
google avatar

Kerri B.

Yelp
Great spot to meet up with a buddy and take a walk on West Cliff with stunning views and surf action. And the bathrooms are part of the building so a good place to start or end your outing. The line on Sunday was the longest I've experienced there so glad to see business is good, but I think we stood for at least 15 minutes before getting to the counter to order. We did get lucky and found access to a table. But you gotta clean it yourself. We got a chowder and a pork sandwich. They were pretty good. My favorite thing is the iced Turkish coffee. Sweet and creamy. Yum. I recommend hitting this place up for a casual stop on one of Santa Cruz's best beaches.
google avatar

Athonia C.

Yelp
Healthy, plant-based, eaters can order the spicy kimchi-dilla, hold the cheese and sour cream. kim chi is homemade and free of fish or shrimp now! They have cholula, tobasco & tapatillo hot sauce too! Vegans and vegetarians will be delighted.
google avatar

Dawn B.

Yelp
This place Rocks!!! Great fish and Carnitas tacos and Doggie fritatas!! Russell loves them!!!!!! He has his own fan club the service is amazing!!! What chophouse be bag about sorting outside amongst the surfers, monarchs and runners.
google avatar

Shar R.

Yelp
Delicious food in a perfect location. Lots of variety on the menu and grab and go bites as well.
google avatar

Tandem H.

Yelp
Delicious! Great options. Love the Quesadillas and fish tacos! Always hits the spot after surfing.
google avatar

James L.

Yelp
Food and service here are really good. We get the Breakadilla, matcha, baked goods and their kimchee pretty often since those are our favs. They sell house made Salsa and I have had both and feel they lack flavor. Just my opinion and I am a salsa snob.
google avatar

Monica M.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots in Santa Cruz for quick, delicious, and healthy eats. While the building may look unassuming -- it is a little surf shack with a very small interior that only fits one party at a time where you walk up to order food and then take your food outside to sit at a collection of outdoor tables -- it is only steps away from the ocean and dishes up seriously delicious food. The food is a mixture between California fresh, Korean twists, and satisfying beach eats. They have great dillas (think a panini meets a burrito meets a quesadilla) full of different flavor options form my favorite - the chipotle chicken dilla- to vegetarian options! Or grab donuts and breakfast burritos for a breakfast bite. Awesome local people and great local food. I go here far too often and don't plan on stopping any time soon.

Orly L.

Yelp
agreeing that the food is fresh and reasonably priced BUT why would any food service place NOT have their staff clean tables between guests? If it were a sit down/full service food place, it would be part of the consistent procedure for staff to perform but NOT at this place. Spilled coffee, food scraps and worst of all, bird poop on the tables; guessing that the owner or management expects each of us to have a tray under our meal? A direct message to the business has gone ignored; too bad !
google avatar

cami c.

Yelp
OMG! So glad we ran into a local who kindly told us about this place! It's a funky small coffee shop with no seating. You order your made-fresh food to go. Luckily there are ample picnic tables at this ocean-front park, next to the lighthouse. So, picturesque views abound while enjoying your meal. We had the salmon poke salad, a fish taco, and the tuna sandwich. I can't even describe how fresh and delish every item was. The picture doesn't lie. Neither do I. Just go when you're in Santa Cruz! I hear the coffee is good, too!
google avatar

Carine B.

Yelp
I wanted to love it but the food was bland, and overpriced. The staff was very friendly and the locations is great.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
Why are these breakfast tacos so good??! I planned to eat one, ended up getting two, and also got the salsa verde to go which was a great decision. I dream about these breakfast tacos and can't wait to return to eat more! Staff is also super nice and the location can't be beat. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Maggie G.

Yelp
This place was good. Didn't wow us but everything was fresh and good. The line moves fast so don't be discouraged by that. One thing that was amazing was the iced Turkish coffee! I wish I could recreate it.
google avatar

Kay O.

Yelp
I've been to this place a handful of times and every time it's always delicious! The people that work here are always friendly and very quick about getting the orders out. Also, very helpful when I'm indecisive! Lol I have stupid food allergies and I'm so happy they have gluten-free and vegan options for cookies!! Gluten-free is for me and every once in a while I don't mind if there's a little egg, but I'd rather be vegan personally they also had this delicious Agua Fresca, which had turmeric, ginger, lemonade, and today they had a little bit of watermelon in the mixture and it was simply delicious and quenched my thirst perfectly since it was freaking and 91° in Santa Cruz?! How is that even possible?! We tried to avoid the heat since I'm from Silicon Valley and we went over the hill and melted by the beach instead of in my house. Lol Love shopping local, and I will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Clover E.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for ages, but never walk by at the right time (not being hungry and seeing long lines). Came by today after viewing the monarchs nearby and saw a short line so ordered for spouse and me: two fish tacos. Really fresh, delicious ingredients, but very "wet" and broke through the tortilla, so difficult to eat by hand. Service was friendly and quick: just read the signs, it's all clearly set up and well-organized.
google avatar

Casey M.

Yelp
This food shack is five stars for a reason. The egg bites in the morning are savory bites of goodness while the breakfast quesadilla is my favorite! The salsa verde is one of the best. Come here if you can!

Stephanie T.

Yelp
Consistently good food and the patrons are easy going. The acai bowl and Turkish coffee is delicious.
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
Can't believe I didn't try this place sooner!!!! Don't underestimate the food truck and food banner. The breakfast tacos are the BEST. The bacon add on is worth every penny ! they also sell sweatshirts for an unexpectedly cool windy day along west cliff drive. This is a Santa Cruz must try. Plenty of outdoor seating. Looking forward to trying more of the menu in the future
google avatar

Miriam A.

Yelp
My absolute favorite place to stop and grab a bite after my long walks along West Cliff! Its location is nestled right by the lighthouse and beach with lots of tables in the sun or in the shade to sit with family or friends and enjoy a yummy meal. I always order their Tuna Sandwich and am always thinking about the next time I'll get one! It is served on warm brioche bread, has lots of crunch from the herb salad, and they add some hot sauce that adds a nice kick. We always end with a coffee and baked good which are also delicious! 10/10 recommend this place on your next Santa Cruz outing!
google avatar

Jaclyn M.

Yelp
Ordered the carnitas tacos. They were really tasty, seasoned well with good flavor. My husband ordered the pork dilla, it looked good but a little bland. The agua Fresca was delicious. Best part is the scenery and ambiance of the outdoor area, right next to the water. Biggest negative is that it's connected to the public (and really dirty) restrooms. Bring hand sanitizer :)
google avatar

Rachel L.

Yelp
Walked here on a Saturday morning with friends. There is no indoor seating but there are lovely benches outside to sit on if you can find an empty one. Inside the restaurant is pretty small because its only used to cook and order from meaning the line is outside all of the time. The wait wasn't too long especially considering my friends and I went at peak breakfast time around 10-11. I ordered the breakfast- dilla and a blood orange slice of bread. There breakfast pastries look and taste super fresh! The blood orange slice was good and not too sweet. Had a very strong orange taste that at some points had a little too much peel flavor. The breakfast-dilla was shaped like a flattened burrito in the best way possible. It was toasted to perfection and had a good ratio of ingredients. I didn't end up finishing my burrito there and it reheated well. Overall, this is a great food spot by the beach and would definitely come here again.
google avatar

Jayme P.

Yelp
I ordered the Breakadilla on a Saturday afternoon when the place wasn't too busy. It was good, but not great! It definitely could have used a little bit more flavor, salsa, hot sauce, salt, pepper, anything! They have a very interesting menu though and I'd want to come back to try more. The location can't be beat! Good luck finding parking though on the weekend. If you do end up finding a spot, then take your food to go and watch the surfers!
google avatar

Luc M.

Yelp
I keep coming back to this spot, mostly because it's perfectly perched on West Cliff, and it's the only place around to snag a seat and a bite. The setup? A charming little brick building that looks like it might've once been an info booth or something equally quaint. You order at the counter, and there's usually a decent-sized line, but that's part of the charm. The seating is all outdoors, which is exactly why you're here--to soak in the beach views and enjoy a gorgeous day. The fish tacos were surprisingly delicious, with just the right amount of crispiness, and the sauce had a subtle kick. I also got to try the pork bowl, which was just as tasty. It's perfect for a snack and chill with picnic vibes.

Andres R.

Yelp
This is the best coffee shop in Santa cruz there was a laddy that was so nice to us Yk who you are ur the best
