Steel & Rye’s Almond Bostock Pastry Is the Best $5 You’ll Spend This Month - Eater Boston

"In the U.S., the bostock generally gets less airtime compared to its spotlight-hugging French siblings like the chocolate croissant, but at Milton restaurant and bakery Steel & Rye, the pastry shines on the menu. Head baker Aditya Sastri’s bostock retains many elements of the traditional French pastry, including brioche, frangipane, almonds, and powdered sugar. But Sastri’s creation also uses leftover croissant dough trimmings that are usually thrown away, along with a more generous helping of frangipane. 'It’s the best part of an almond bostock,' says Sastri." - Wilson Lee

We had a group for lunch/brunch and the server was fabulous. I totally understand with a large group, the logistics and different personalities can be a bit much. 5 stars for the service but the food was very lackluster. Food was severely under-seasoned but if you like unseasoned food, this is the place to go. Not one person out of our group enjoyed the food, it was all just okay. The espresso martini was delightful. I wouldn’t go back unless someone else specifically wanted to go.

Google
Really impressive range: fresh baked breads, expansive wine and spirits, coffee and tea (I had MEM Matcha with pistachio milk), and everything from pizza, to wings, to salads, to burgers. The decor is fabulous and there is indoor and outdoor seating. My drink was nearly $8, so def not a “come here for your morning commute” place, but I would absolutely come for dinner again. The foccoccia pizza with cloves of garlic in the crust was phenomenal. There is one handicapped spot. Sadly the others are covered with the outdoor seating, but I was the only one who needed the spot so lucky me!

Google
This is one of the coolest restaurants with a little coffee & pastry shop inside. Everything was so cool the atmosphere and the staff being so friendly was some of the high points of this place but the food was DEFINITELY THE MOST AMAZING PART !!!!!!!! The food was so delicious and full of so many amazing flavors we cannot wait to come back try the dinner options see you soon.

Google
What a great place to eat! Great breakfast and lunch choices and a wonderful bakery. Lots of outdoor seating too for good weather dining and if you have pets. Portions were plentiful so I took home half of my delicious falafel sandwich. My friend’s plate had loads of bacon and a large portion of eggs and potatoes. Love it!

Google
I loved the bar the and vibes. I had the octopus as an appetizer and a pizza as the main course. My friends had a burger and a pasta dish. The octopus was great but the pizza didn't blow me away. I'd like to come back and try something different. The whole restaurant is very nicely furnished and service was great.

Google
This place is AWESOME. The food is consistently delicious , they even have an excellent breakfast sandwich if you are looking for more than just a dinner spot. The cocktails are to die for. There is a cocktail (Pear Root) we love that is no longer on the menu and they continue to make it no problem. The staff is awesome they are always super friendly and accommodating. We will definitely continue to come here!

Google
I wasn't sure what to expect when I came for dinner at Steel and Rye. The host at the front desk was very friendly and took me to the table I had booked right away. The food was delicious and our server was fabulous. She let us take our time, and checked on us regularly. Great experience. Will go back!

Google
A great American restaurant featuring an in house bakery and wood oven for pizza! I had dinner and brunch there, both were very high quality. I’d say in this restaurant quality is central to their business model rather than quantity. This does not mean that the portions are small: in both occasions I was feeling full after having my meals. I’d definitely go back and would recommend it to anyone: it is family friendly, but also feels like a good place for a date.

Yelp
Went for Sunday brunch: Good food, great service, nice ambiance! We will be back!

Yelp
So happy that they are open again and maybe it's just the slight updates to the menu or the change in the brunch hours but something has felt off the last two visits. The way I was so excited to get the Caesar salad again and when I got it it was just .. not good. I miss the old one with egg and the delicious lettuce. The open/brunch hours are a little confusing, 9am was always perfect. Food is always good but previously it was great. I am chalking it up to re-opening and will be trying again in the future.

Yelp
I just had to give a special kudos to their sourdough bread. It is some of the best that I had especially if you take it home and pop it back in the oven. Personally I enjoy the bread when it isn't sliced. I also learned from the baker that the bread is okay for gluten intolerant people (but not gluten free / celiacs) because of the long fermentation process that breaks down the gluten

Yelp
This coffee was one of the best coffees I've ever had. I got the honey lavender flavor and I cannot stop thinking about how good this coffee was. I would recommend this coffee to anyone. The staff was very nice.

Yelp
Great place for coffee in Milton! They have many options and specialty drinks! I have not tried the food here but will definitely be back to try! The staff was very helpful when explaining how to order since it was a bit confusing where to order when I first walked in. I ordered an iced Ube latte and it was great! It was the right amount of sweetness and nice balance of flavor! A portion of the proceeds from the ube latte and taro latte are donated to the Maui Wildfire Relief until mid September as well!

Yelp
The food and service was fantastic! I did feel that the menu brunch was a little pricier than anticipated, and to be honest, I'd have preferred to just go to their cafe section since they have so many great options there. There's a parking lot & lots of street parking as well!
google avatar

Yelp
Great decor, it seems like a hidden gem but I learned about it first on phantom gourmet so I guess the cats out the bag. I ordered a custom seafood pizza with chicken and a garlic base and it was amazing. The service was great also had a burger which was juicy and perfectly cooked. It was a slow night but the attentiveness I received was A1! Great place to try out!

Yelp
What a great place wouldn't expect less food and service was just amazing!!! Highly recommended.

Yelp
This is a special place. The menu is amazing. The ambiance is super cool and the food, well on the outrageous side of things. I had the Campanelle* with lobster, squash blossom curry, preserved meyer lemon that I dream about. The squash blossom appetizer was amazing. Beer selection is quite good. Service was impeccable. I just wish this was closer to me because I'd be here all the time. The bakery for breakfast is also amazing. This place is a must! Wow...just wow! Go get you some.

Yelp
I love their margherita pizza and their homemade chips!! It's so crispy and fresh. There is a ton of street parking as well as lot parking. In the morning, they have a bakery section with coffee/tea and baked goods. They have free Wi-Fi here so I would come here with a friend and do work together. There is patio seating so I love to come here on a warm beautiful day and do some work outside.

Yelp
Food: I came for the bakery. There wasn't a huge selection of pastries, but what they had all looked good. I ended up getting the honey graham latte and pumpkin pie danish with whipped mascarpone, which I'm guessing are both seasonal items, but I could be wrong. The latte tasted like a teddy graham as advertised and hit the spot on a cold day. The pumpkin pie danish with whipped mascarpone was delicious! It was very flaky, the filling wasn't too heavy, and the sugar crystals added a nice crunch. I would get it again. Service: I feel like the person who took my order could have been friendlier, as it felt like I was being rushed, but it was a small interaction, so I won't think much of it. Other than that, no issues. Ambiance: The inside is very spacious with tall ceilings. I didn't dine it, but it looks like a good spot for large groups. There is also a free parking lot and plenty of two-hour street parking.

Yelp
Nice laid back vibes. We went around 3:30 pm and between 3:30-4 the food menu changes over and only serves pizza. The pizza was really good, had a nice crisp to it. It was a little oily but taste was very fresh. The smash burger was good as well. Could be a nice date night spot and they also have a bakery during the day.

Yelp
Off the lunch menu - the turkey and swiss sandwich was absolutely scrumptious. I would usually never go for turkey or swiss, but this beautiful sandwich was one of the best I have ever tasted. Their adorable honey lavender latte is so good I nearly fainted with the awe-striking deliciousness of this beverage. (basically, it's to-die-for and you should get this if you're into that kind of thing) The restaurant itself is adorable. It's basically a barn vibe with cute lighting, plenty of seating variety, and some of the cutest glassware. I didn't get pictures, but the water is served in the cutest sets!!! Bathrooms are super obvious, a little hall right before the bakery counter when walking in the door. They have free wifi available and it didn't seem too slow or anything, there was music playing in the background at just the perfect volume to hear yet not too loud as to overpower conversation. They have many service options, but I ordered at the bakery ordering space. Each table, however, has a QR code to scan, order, and pay for the order without having to use their little "register" (perfect for the average introvert). Every staff member I saw was friendly and incredibly helpful to this first-timer. Make sure you figure out what time of day you are going so you know what menu(s) you could choose off of, though because they have schedules for meal rotations.

Yelp
We go to this place so regularly they know us by name. The entire staff and food is so great. The environment is perfect for me and my fiancé to not only enjoy each other's company, but also get some accomplish some graduate school studies. We love this place so much.

Yelp
I enjoyed the very first time I came here so I had to bring some family back to try as well. We ordered Brisket hash, egg benedict, BLT, avocado toast, strawberry ricatta toast, turkey sandwich, and a basic breakfast. Everything tasted really good and fresh. The turkey sandwich looked a little sad, but everything else was 8/10! My favorite drink was the Taro latte with oat milk, I also tried the ube latte and it was not good. It had no flavor and it just tasted like plain coffee with heavy purple coloring. The pistachio milk latte was alright as well, flavor isn't really strong like the taro. Our service was good, both times I was here they were on point. It was quite busy every time I came. Bathroom was pretty clean. The bakery was delicious as well! My favorite was the almond something forgot the name and the twisted pretzel croissant . Definitely will come back again sometime, although I do wish the menu option for brunch was broader..

Yelp
One of those cases where I found myself doing research. If I am going to bop a place on the noggin, I want to make sure I more-or-less know what I am talking about. Steel & Rye appears to have something of an identity crisis, though somehow it works? S&R is the amalgamation of a hip brunch and dinner restaurant combined with a bakery/cafe that bakes pastries and loaves of bread. Complete with a bar, of course. I stopped in for a non-boozy Sunday brunch and ordered the chilaquiles and a regular coffee. I later bought a piece of Cherry & Pink Peppercorn Shortbread to satisfy my sweet tooth and go with the coffee once the chilaquiles were gone. The Chilaquiles were excellent! The chips were warm and felt homemade, and the chicken was in ample amounts and very tender. The salsa verde was fantastic, too; it brought a gentle level of heat and acidity and tied everything together. The only thing that would have been nice would be some avocado. Then again, that's just the millennial in me talking. The execution here works. Having the chicken and most of the sauce be towards the bottom meant that the chips could shine on their own without being turned into a soggy mess. As great as this dish was, I found the price steep relative to what I got. $21 for a plate of (though tasty) chips, a modest amount of chicken, an egg, and some veggies and sauces seems relatively high. Moving to the baked good - I immensely enjoyed the shortbread. It wasn't overly sweet, and the cherry and pink peppercorn flavors worked well together. I only wish I wasn't so desensitized to pepper in all forms! The service here was solid, nothing to write home about, but nothing to complain about either.

Yelp
Thank you for always being so accommodating to young children. Steel and Rye is our go-to for a "treat" and you make it very easy for parents to enjoy delicious yummies and coffee. Thank you!!

Yelp
I have to take a quick moment to acknowledge the manager, Carol! (I hope I heard her name correctly!) My friends & I came in seeking breakfast on a Friday morning. We were confused by the service. Had to seat ourselves...do we we have a server? Do we not? Order with the QR code? QR menu didn't match the paper menu? Walk to the cashier to order? Etc, etc... We became super frustrated & wanted to leave. Superstar Manager Carol swooped in sensing our frustrations and showered us with amazing customer service & compassion. She made sure everything was perfect for us. In the end, amazing food! Breakfast egg sandwich was great. Lavender honey coffee was delicious! Tip: Weekday mornings are more of a "cafe style" fyi (unless you sit at the bar). Kuddos to Carol for being great at what she does

Yelp
I was really excited to return to Steel and Rye after they reopened last week to pick up their infamous Caesar Salad. The image online showed the salad just as I remembered it, but what I picked up was a bowl of bibb lettuce with bread crumbs spinkled on top and dressing on the side. No romaine, no cheese, no croutons, no hard boiled egg (signature ingredient)...just a bowl of lettuce with bread crumbs for $15.00. I brought the salad back to the staff to ask if there had been a mistake with my order as it did not look at all like the Caesar Salad I had enjoyed in the past nor the picture that they feature on their website. I was told that they have changed how they now make their Caesar. $15.00 for a bowl of lettuce. Total rip off!

Yelp
Very popular restaurant close to my house. All types of food. I've had my Christmas parties there. Doesn't disappoint.

Yelp
They have really great service, really great coffee and really great food at Steel & Rye. Our friends invited out for coffee yesterday and that's how we discovered Steel & Rye. This place is very popular and packed. I can see why as our servers were very friendly and attentive. They constantly topped up our coffee and waters. The food quality was excellent, and the atmosphere was high energy and vibrant. I really liked this place and will be sure to come back.

Jaden L.

Yelp
Server shoutout! I wanted well "needed" to let everyone know about the service my family and I received yesterday at Steel & Rye Frankie (Francesca) was beyond knowledgeable about the menu but what really got our attention was her personality and absolute honesty. My sister who is visiting from California is very picky in what she eats was on the fence about a few items on the menu and wasn't sure she would be happy with any choice she made when Frankie stepped in and explained not only in how many of the dishes are prepared but also what is usually favored by other guests with similar palates. My sister was extremely appreciative and ended up ordering the mushroom toast dish and the cabbage which she absolutely loved! Our other dishes were amazing also but what made the entire dinner experience a great one was whole heartedly Frankie! I just wanted to give her props!!

Yelp
It's a large space and looks very inviting- both inside and the patio. My first time eating from here. Only did take out but would definitely try dining in. It would probably be a much better experience. The Caesar salad was decent. The service was pretty good but they ran out of cutlery and it took them a while to find it. Found street parking nearby easily on a Sunday morning.

Yelp
30 minutes of waiting for lunch time! bad service, not recommended. Can not say few minutes and let us wait for 30minutes minimum No
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
Interesting place, definitely worth a visit. Fabulous baked goods, and eclectic upscale, brunch lunch and dinner. Love, the avocado toast, and the broccoli Rob sandwich, the hash was crazy, salty, and needed bread or greens to spread the salt and flavor, and give more value. $20 is insane for that. Butternut squash soup was too sweet and $12 for a tiny bowl. Very nice drink selection, excellent weight staff, unique space, limited parking.

Yelp
Move past the red double doors and get introduced to a very large expanse of open interior with high ceilings and abundant light punching through during the afternoon for lunch where a bakery off-center serves various pastries and coffee-influenced beverages with the kitchen behind, to the left is small and large circular tables and to the right resides the bar with high-tops. Ordering from the menu is very simple via QR code and you can add your party to the group check or everyone can pay themselves individually. The waitstaff will bring them over when your orders are ready. I have too many soft spots for espresso martinis and as a result, I ordered one but the texture was creamier than preferred since not too much espresso flavor came through. Second drink was a rye old-fashioned that although with a welcoming dose of bourbon, wasn't as balanced and tasted a bit artificial. The Banh Mi flew out at me with its ingredients of coffee roasted pork and black garlic mayo so my decision was made without hesitation. However, the pork was on the drier side and couldn't make out the black garlic mayo through the heavy proportion of baguette. If only the filling were more plentiful than the bread, it would've been more flavorful and savory overall. Would like to return to check out their dinner menu. Parking is a small angular lot but there's 2-hour street parking.

Yelp
I had New Years brunch at Steel & Rye and was impressed with the service and food. The space is massive, there are multiple seating areas and a dedicated area to highlight their fresh pastries, which were all great. The oysters were briny and fresh, the Italian sandwich was good and the brisket hash was decent. I do wish there were a few more breakfast items to select as there were only 7-8 items.
google avatar

Samantha S.

Yelp
Great menu, staff, and vibe. I go here all the time with my fiancé and it's a staple.

Yelp
Great bar service! Eclectic menu with always something great to try. Cool vibe. Outdoor seating.

Yelp
We loved sitting in the patio for dinner. The service was wonderful, the food was delish and so were the drinks! I would come here for a spread of apps (like the chips and dip and shishito peppers) drinks (their homemade sodas come in fun flavors) or a full dinner with their homemade pastas and crispy fried chicken sandwich. Can't go wrong.

Barbara S.

Yelp
Eaten here many times. Food is great, service is attentive and friendly, and the ambiance is great. It's a bit noisy so, if you're concerned, mention it and ask for a quiet table. Love this place!
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
We enjoyed our quick stop for a bite! Super fresh food and lovely ambience! Their strawberry basil soda was refreshing and the basil was so lovely! The strawberry ricotta toast was delightful!
google avatar

Julie M.

Yelp
It's a very small space inside. But hopefully if not many people are there you can sit and it's a nice cozy spot. The Turkey apple and Brie sandwich was DELICIOUS! The grilled bread it was on also made an impact. My friend got the Buffalo chicken sandwich and I did try a bit and it was also equally as delicious. My iced chai latte was different than normal but in a good way. They don't make it super sweet, it's more of the spiced flavor which was nice and refreshing. The service was poor. The girl at the register was not very friendly or welcoming. It took a long time for our sandwiches to come out and then they put mine on the pick up shelf and I had to ask about the status 10 min after my friend got hers. They didn't even say sorry or look like they felt bad at all.

Yelp
Steel & Rye always impresses with its delectable cuisine and inviting ambiance. However, the impeccable service exemplified by one remarkable bartender, George, truly sets this place apart. He consistently demonstrates an outstanding commitment to making every guest feel valued and welcomed, whether busy or quiet. One of the striking features of George's service is his remarkable ability to anticipate customers' needs. Every time I walk into Steel & Rye, even before I'm comfortably settled in, he surprises me with a glass of chilled bubbly water, my go-to. This small but thoughtful gesture sets the tone for the excellent service that follows. I wholeheartedly recommend Steel & Rye to anyone seeking a dining experience that truly stands out. Now, with the Bakery available during the day, there is even more opportunity to enjoy the establishment.
google avatar

Rise E.

Yelp
It's a great neighborhood restaurant. The staff was considerate and capable, and the food was amazing. Steel & Rye has amazing appetizers. The burrata and the Mussels are two of my favorites. Main courses - try the Risotto! The pizza is also incredible!

V C.

Yelp
I am like a little kid and I often get their ube latte with pistachio milk (because my body reacts badly to dairy) and no espresso and I love the marshmallowy vanilla flavor and the color. I also am super excited they added a black sesame latte. I currently teach early mornings at C2 Body down the street so the warm flavored plant based milks helps me have some calories in me while I teach. What's exceptionally thoughtful is that the staff lets me sit in the building until they're open when it is cold out because the T runs unpredictably and I don't own a car.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice interior. Pleasant staff. Decent food. Bakery section is cool, you can always take some nice stuff out.
google avatar

eileen b.

Yelp
Why why why would they take the chicken fried mushrooms off the menu? They were literally my entire reason for ever visiting. There is a vegetarian option, but it leaves a lot to be desired with nothing substantial that includes the right mix of fat and protein. No vegetarian starters unless you count chips and bread (I don't). There is no reason for me to come here now, and I used to bring a ton of people here frequently.

Yelp
Nice place. Great location with a limited parking spaces. I would suggest this place for appetizers and dessert. The entree menu is very limited. I got the scallop and potato plate which was good but came small in size. The beef burger was tall in height but lacked flavor. You will have to ask for extra condiments so you can doctor it up. I did love their spicy mustard with house chips and their version of lemon meringue was good also. They do have wood burning pizza if you prefer to sit near the oven. Service was good and staff is very attentive. Bring your wallet though. For a casual type restaurant, food for 2 and 2 glasses of wine, I spent $130.

Kim R.

Yelp
Whether you're looking for a morning latte with pastry or sandwiches for lunch or pizza for dinner, Steel & Rye got you covered. Great bar section to watch a game with friendly service. The variety of choices avaialble on the menu is great. We can't wait to come back the next time we visit Milton.

Yelp
First off SIT AT THE BAR, the wait staff on the floor are slow and non attentive the people at the bar on the other hand are awesome, pizza is their thing they are pretty good and they make decent drinks, the rest of the menu is not as appealing to me at least maybe the crispy chicken sandwich is another good go to but for me here is really only the pizza, menu needs to be updated to be taken serious, SIT AT THE BAR and you will have a lot better experience
google avatar

Caroline G.

Yelp
So happy I made it here for breakfast with my sister. First off we loved the ambiance and big space. The restaurant had a number of families which we loved to see, so very family friendly and given the space not crowded. The servers were very friendly even though they were pretty busy at that time and at no point did we feel like we were not being paid attention to. We ordered some delicious lattes, the honey graham and cookie lattes, they have some appetizing options there for drinks. For food we each had the soft scramble breakfast with a side of Buttermilk pancakes. The pancakes were among the best I've had, fluffy, lightly sweet, BOMB! So yea, in summary we really liked this spot and will return.

Yelp
Great food and fun vibe, great for everyone. Owners are good to the local community and sports teams!

Sandra S.

Yelp
We dined here to celebrate our anniversary and had such a wonderful experience. They provided us with a private table that was just perfect and started us off with a Prosecco toast! Our server was very knowledgeable and friendly - he really made our night! I had the wagyu burger which was cooked perfectly and really tasty. My partner had the super tender veal shank and loved the polenta that came with it! We were very full so grabbed a chocolate chip cookie to go (which we had later and loved!). All in all a very special night. Definitely recommend this spot!

Yelp
m obsessed with their pizza. The wood fire taste combined with the fresh ingredients has me ordering it via Uber eats. I ordered the Spinach Gnudi with one of my delivered orders that didn't travel well at all. The portion size was more like an appetizer, it was $33. It was too oily for me. I dined there this afternoon and with my Bestie and the service was slow, but our waitress was training a new hire which was fine. I ordered the steak frites med/rare that came out cooked medium. I also ordered the roasted cabbage which didn't come out with our entrees. We let them know and they were apologetic and brought an order out quickly. But I'm not sure if we received the actual dish, seeing that it was supposed to be roasted. Didn't have that oven roasted taste as their other dishes do, and it was too oily as well. I will continue to support via that damn good pizza. Dietary restrictions: They were very attentive to my avocado and egg allergies. Food: 3/5 | Service: 4/5 | Atmosphere: 4/5 Recommended dishes Mushroom Pizza, Fried Chicken Sandwich, Steak, Pepperoni Pizza Parking space

Yelp
Came here for dinner on a weeknight and was not disappointed at all. I like the simplicity of the foods along with the selection that was presented on the menu along with their specials. We had a nice juicy burger with steak fries. We tried the raw oysters and they were delicious and not fishy at all. I enjoyed the presentation of the food. Good quality service. Parking is free and Monday's they are closed.

Yelp
There's nothing perfect in life. Except the pizza here. The margarita pizza is easily one of the best pizzas I've ever had; each component is just so fresh and blends together perfectly. Also got the chips & dip which was pretty good considering how they made everything from scratch. The chips were very addicting. With easy parking and an aesthetic scenery, Steel & Rye is easily one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. Can't wait to come back again.

Yelp
Great food and service! Perfect for pre or post hike at Blue Hills! Still thinking about that meal.

Yelp
I finally got a chance to try out Steel & Rye! I was pleasantly surprised honestly didn't know what to expect. The food was great. I got the mussels which were huge and tasty and my friend and I shared a few items like the oysters and deviled eggs. All pretty good. The staff was also pretty friendly. I'd definitely go back.

Yelp
Oohhh man. This place itself is really, really cool. It's decorated beautifully and has a rustic-industrial vibe, which I love. High ceilings, steel beams, lots of wood and natural plant elements. It feels very fresh, new and inviting. My husband and I came here for brunch. We both ordered a bloody mary which came with...a long rectangular slice of carrot? I don't mind carrots but I found this to be odd and prefer my bloody mary with the usual celery stalk. We also ordered a few donut holes to share. They were good. Then I ordered the chilaquiles. While I am no expert in Mexican cuisine, it appears whoever made this dish is not either. Unless they were trying to put their own spin on it? Either way, the tortillas did not taste homemade and they were very soggy in the middle as they were covered with roasted chicken and salsa verde. Traditionally this dish usually comes with more toppings (more than one egg, refried beans, guacamole) but this one had none of that. It reminded me of nachos-gone-wrong, which was unpleasant for brunch. My husband ordered the corned beef hash. The menu stated it came with roasted potatoes, broccoli rabe and sauerkraut, which we both assumed would all be served on the side. Nope - it was all mixed into the corned beef hash. I know hash normally has potatoes in it, but the menu felt misleading. I also felt the broccoli rabe did not belong mixed into the hash as it added an odd stringy texture to it. There were green strings falling out of the hash as you took a bite, which was very unappetizing to be honest. At this price point, our meals were very disappointing. We expected much higher quality for what they charged. Can't say I recommend. We felt a little ripped off upon leaving.
