Steel House Copenhagen | Best places to stay in Copenhagen

"A high-end hostel with seriously cool credentials, perfect for urban adventurers looking for an affordable stay. Once home to the Danish Union of Metalworkers, the building has an industrial design of steel, concrete and exposed pipework; form follows function with every square inch utilized. Dorms are divided between four and six-bed rooms, each with private pods, and there is a selection of tiny doubles and singles for greater privacy. Women-only dorms can also be requested. Practical plus points include a laundry room, kitchen and workstations with a selection of iPads; check-in can also be done via an app with a mobile phone functioning as a room key. Chill out in a lively games room, swimming pool and cinema, or join locals in the bar for some of the city’s cheapest craft beers. " - Sarah Marshall

We were nervous about staying at a hostel. We had 7 people and we were traveling on a budget. The rooms were small, but adequate for what you need if you are just wanting a place to sleep. The pod beds were actually quite comfortable. The location is great. It was within walking distance from the train station and Tivoli. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Great value for the price. Lots of things are add-ons if you want to use them like the gym and pool.

Run down, and apparently on the verge of financial liquidation. The maintenance of everything related to the bathrooms is not acceptable. The drains are mostly clogged. And most of the toilet flush buttons - not only in the rooms but also in the public restrooms - don't work correctly. Either the button doesn't function at all or the water runs continuously. In the kitchen you'll find exactly three bowls suitable for breakfast or soup - for all the guests in the house who use the kitchen. Three bowls total. The photo was taken when there was nobody in the kitchen. Simply unbelievable. So, are guests supposed to eat their soup or porridge from a cup or a flat plate? Ancient chewing gum is stuck to the hallway floors. One really has to wonder whether this hostel will have to close within a few weeks because they're no longer investing money - either because they can't afford to or because they don't want to. It's utterly pathetic.

I stayed for 5 nights and therefore paid a one-time fee of DKK25 to get access to the kitchen. Kitchen is fine, about 8 induction spots and plenty of plates, bowls, cups, and pots/pans. Only problem is if people use it and take their time to wash up, the pans are dirty in the sink. My food got stolen on my last day as I had a late checkout, it was terrible. But at least the staff was nice enough to give me a sandwich. There are 3 fridges which could be abit squeezy for your food. Location is great, near Vestaport metro, but still far from popular attractions if you're fine with taking public transport everywhere. The bed is AWESOME, capsule style, you don't feel it if the person above you is moving around. Tiny walking space but that's expected. Thick blankets and ok pillow. Towels are provided, but although they said they'd change towels and linens on the 4th day, they didn't for me, so that was disappointing. I feedbacked to the front counter but only had 1 more night left so I didn't ask for a replacement. The toilet and shower are separate, with a sensor each that turns the light on everytime someone walks by, so it is distracting and noisy when people are showering. Also, the sensor is outside the showering area, so you have to wave your arm around every 2 mins WHILE SHOWERING, I hope they change that. If you do a late checkout (1pm), your access to the kitchen ends at 11am.

Steel house is in a great central location and is situated next to a nice lake and walk. The common areas on the ground floor are also lovely and have a good vibe and the beer at the bar is cheap. However we were disappointed at the very small size of the room. We went as a couple and we found it a squeeze. On booking.com they list all the facilities, but it is not made clear that you have to pay to use the swimming pool and other facilities. It was ridiculous that towels and bedding are not changed until after the fourth night, as most tourists would not be staying longer than that. When we asked for a change of towels and bedding they charged us for that (100 kr). There was no bin, table or bath mat in the room, which one would expect even in a basic room, even in a hostel. We had a double bed, but we had been given two single duvets. There was no iron in the room and when we asked whether there was one at all, they said no as people kept stealing them! The people in reception were friendly and helpful however. In all, not ideal for a family or a couple on holiday.

Google
Amazing location, very easy to go walking to many touristic sites of the city. The room was spacious enough, with good toilet and shower. The hotel offers a pool, a gym, an spacious kitchen, a bar, and a big lounge area to hang out. I stayed here with a friend, and even though we booked separately, they put together in the same shared room. They included all 6 people in the room arriving and leaving at the same day, which made it very convenient for us to know each other and hang out together throughout our trip, which made it even greater. Continue arranging for people to stay together as much as possible like that! The stairs to go up to the top bunk beds is a bit tricky, with only a side bar to support, but it is possible to manage. Use of amenities like kitchen, gym and pool all require an extra payment. I think it makes sense, but still didn't like that as much.

Google
Very good choice for anyone looking to book a private room for cheap. The accomodation was very good, and the staff were incredibly helpful. The room itself was small but the beds offered extra space, looked cool and were really comfortable. Just a heads up though: you'll have to pay extra to use the facilities inside the shared spaces of the hotel (pool, gym, darts etc)

Google
The price for a double room is relatively cheap for Copenhagen. However, the room was also very small (you can't even open a suitcase on the floor). In addition, you have to pay extra for everything, including parking, swimming pool, gym, kitchen use, etc. You can tell that they are trying to save money everywhere, including on toilet paper. Unfortunately, the room wasn't very clean either; for example, there was someone else's hair on the shower wall and mold in the corner. The windows hadn't been cleaned in months. The location is very central and highly recommended if you want to see Copenhagen.

The hostel facilities are very well maintained; kudos for the ensuite toilet and shower. Comfortable bed; quite atmosphere. Rooms and room-lockers way too narrow. Swimming pool very nice, though small, so it gets a bit crowded. Many of what are basic services at other hostels require payment at this one (like use of the kitchen and luggage rooms). My room key got deactivated at least 5 minutes before 11.00 (check out time), even though I still managed to use it for the elevator; it resulted in me having to go back and forth from the reception to reactivate it and retrieve my luggage; I was not the only person suffering from that problem.

Yelp
Stayed here for my trip to Denmark. Beautiful hostel with more of a younger crowd. They have various games, pool tables and arcade in the main lobby. There's a cafe with lots of seating. They also have a shared kitchen if you want to cook. Inside the rooms there's individual usb charging outlets on each bed - super convenient. They only thing they are lacking is a table and chairs inside the rooms. If you want to eat, you'll need to sit on the bed to eat or go downstairs to the lobby. The room was nice and clean. There is a pool but you need to pay for it separately.

Yelp
We got one of the private rooms. The room was dirty and dusty, and the people who were supposed to clean the room never cleaned it the whole week we stayed there. There are cobwebs all over the balcony, spiders, and we found an acrylic nail by the sliding glass door. Filthy. Will not stay here again.

Yelp
Affordable Great location Safe This was my first time at a hostel and I would definitely do it again. It was about $20 to stay in an all women shared room for the night. They also have "for all" too. if you prefer that as well. The bed was comfortable and the covers were warm. The bathroom and shower were clean. They had great amenities such as a fitness center, cinema room, arcade, bar, coffee, pool table and hangout room, some of which are an extra cost. If you have time to spare, walk across the street and check out the little trail to explore a bit.

Yelp
I enjoy this place. Not too partyish and not too uppity. I was in the game room alot but also listened to their jazz band nightly. Next to the lakes take a nice walk. Movie theater not too far, their in a good spot next to plenty of places. Food and drinks little pricey but no surprise. Good spot to rest. Rooms nice and quiet but also depends on the people

Yelp
Wonderful spot for a budget stay in pricey Copenhagen. We opted for two private rooms with terraces. Check in was quick and easy. Rooms are basic and small but fit the bill. The noise level was super low, allowing for a nice sleep. Both rooms could have used a better cleaning; hairs all around and the plants in the terrace were a mess. Also, some trash in the terrace area. Staff were great. Props to Stefan, from Croatia. He went the extra mile to help me with a problem with my car stuck in the parking garage. Mix of ages, chill vibe.

Yelp
This was an amazing hostel. It really felt like a hotel. Super clean and new, comfortable beds, ensuites in the dorm rooms, lots of ammenities (shuffle board, cinema, tv-room, pool, gym, storage lockers, bar & breakfast) take note most the amenities had a small fee but not much. There were also activities like yoga and morning runs with the staff. Wifi through out. Only downside was the bathroom door was a bad design, didn't quite close completely and it was hard to get the latch to lock. The light sensor would turn off in the middle of your shower but stay on extra long when someone was done with the bathroom. The rooms are narrow and large bags won't fit in the lockers provided in the rooms and there isn't much space for them on the floor. Otherwise that, it's a beautiful hostel. Not too much mingling happening more of a hotel vibe but really nice place. The bunk beds were sturdy didn't make any noice when you come in late and all though they are closed in, they are tall so your not too closterphobic. And they have nice holders & plugs for your things. Would highly recommend this place. It's a great value for copenhagen and the location is right near the train station and trivoli. Oh and check-in/check out is super easy! So props.

Yelp
For a hostel, this felt like staying in a luxury hotel, entire place was modern and clean, with a lively bar. Breakfast was a little underwhelming, but the hostel is in a great location. Highly recommend renting a bike for 24hrs, it's a great price!

Yelp
This is probably one of the best hostels I have been to, i really do recommend you stay at Steelhouse if you are in Copenhagen. They do free tours everyday, you can rent out bicycles at an affordable price, they have a swimming pool and a gym. Copenhagen is an expensive city to eat out all the time best thing to do is do a bit of grocery shopping and use the kitchen at SteelHouse and I love that they have thought about having a kitchen you save so much money making your own meals. There so many positive things I can say about this place it ticked all the boxes, 5 Stars.

Yelp
The stay and accommodations are pretty nice, especially for a hostel... My problem with this place is that they nickel and dime you for everything. Gym membership, games, even access to the kitchen. It's not really published well on the website and is very misleading. I am particularly bitter about the gym and extra cost since I chose this spot over another hostel for that exact reason. On a different note, the bathroom lights automatically turn off after a minute, which led to me getting a pretty back cut on my neck when shaving.

Yelp
It's the year 2187, and your hostel in Copenhagen contains six pod-like beds that invoke your inner Luke Skywalker. Fit for a Jedi, your room is clean, uber-modern, and the room's brand new and brilliant shower makes you feel okay sleeping in because the 5-day weather forecast calls for cold, wet wet rain. That was basically my experience at Steel House. The weather sucked the entire time I spent in Copenhagen, so I spent most of my time catching up on my digital nomading work either in my room or their super spacious lobby.

Yelp
I had booked a 3 night stay at Steel House 9 months in advance of my stay through Hotels.com. In February I reached out directly to Steel House and confirmed my reservation. I received a confirmation in writing from the Reservations Manager (withholding name). While I was in Norway (4 days before I was to arrive in Copenhagen) I received confirmation from Hotels.com that my booking is confirmed and the amount I will be charged at the hotel. The day that I flew to Copenhagen I received an email from Hotels.com says "sorry your plans changed". I think....my plans are the same. I immediately email Steel House confirming that my family was arriving that day and asking about transportation to the hostel from the airport. I received a response from the Booking Coordinator giving me information on how to get to the hostel and "looking forward to welcome you." I then show up - rainy day - with my family (two young kids) and go to the hostel. They tell me that I don't have a reservation. There was an email sent asking for "payment in full" that I did not respond to and they canceled after not hearing from in in 24 hours. The room was gone and they could not host our family. They could not prove that they sent an email. Nothing was in my inbox or junk mail. I showed them confirmation emails that I had received (including one from that day) and they said they could not help me. We had to find another hotel on our own. The person at the desk called another hostel for us and said they might have rooms and that was it. BEWARE. It is insane that they send some email...which could go to junk...and don't warn people to look out for this email. Nobody mentioned it previous to arriving at the hotel. If Steel House wants to be paid in advance then require prepayment when you book at Hotel.com. That is simple, other hotels required prepayment and we did it. They probably canceled my room so they could sell it for more - Copenhagen was packed that weekend!

Yelp
MUSICIANS BEWARE!!! My partner was offered a gig to play music for an hour and a half on a Friday night. Originally, the bar manager said they offer a bed in a dorm, plus use of the pool and gym, as well as a food and drinks. We got back to her to say that we have our own apartment, we don't need a bed, gym or pool. So she agreed to let him play with a bar tab but wouldn't tell us what it would be. They will NOT pay their musicians. We show up on the night of the gig and the barman said all he gets is 3 beers and a sandwich (equal to about 18 euros for an hour and a half of playing plus set up and take down). This is LESS THAN MINIMUM WAGE. What a slap in the face. He has been playing professionally for over 15 years across 4 continents. The average he would get paid in a bar is 100 euros PLUS a 50 euro bar tab. This is a skilled position that not a lot of people can do. He has been playing for 20 years to get as good as he is today. PAY AND APPRECIATE YOUR FREAKIN MUSICIANS! We did stay in the hostel for a week before all of this and thought it was average. It doesn't really have that hostel feel. You have to pay for literally everything (even to use the kitchen). Breakfast was pretty bad but edible. Room was extremely cramped (dangerous in terms of fire) for how expensive it was. Pool table needs replacing. Lights in the room are automatic and turn on even if you just turn over in bed. The room was not cleaned at all in the week we were there. Not enough soap in the dispensers. I'd choose somewhere else. You guys need to rethink your process and treat your customers and musicians better..

Yelp
I looooved this place. 1st time staying in a hostel but we paid for our own room.....me and my husband. Rooms are small but has all the necessities. Close to lots of restaurants, train stations, and bus stops. Very convenient. It has a game room, a cafe, a lounge with board games, cards, jenga, a computer room (filled with tablets), a gym, a pool, and much more. I'd def stay here again and would highly recommend this place to those visiting Copenhagen.

Yelp
This place has the worst customer service of any establishment I've been to that accepts money. One of the people in my room was being a complete a**hole and was snoozing his alarm every five minutes keeping the entire room awake at 5am in the morning. After fruitlessly trying to get him to dismiss the alarm instead of snoozing it several times for over an hour I went down to the front desk to see if there was anything they could do to help resolve the situation. Instead of offering help, or even apologizing that there was nothing they could do I was instead laughed off and told they "we'rent kindergarteners". I had no choice but to return to my room and continue the sleepless night with everyone else. Thankfully this was my final night in the place.

Yelp
We had a great stay at Steel house. Very modern, clean and the staff was very friendly. We were happy to learn that we could rent bikes and that there was a great variety of activities at the hostel. A pool, games, TV/Cinema and a big kitchen. Good for families. The lobby is super cozy with a lot of space. Thank you for a great time!
