Where to Learn About Sake in New York City

"A speakeasy-style sake bar reached through a second-floor hair salon, offering a long, narrow space where vinyl records and jazz set the mood. The program focuses on cutting-edge brews and inventive pours—such as bottles from one of Japan’s few female brewers—and also serves shochu-based cocktails alongside specialty sakes." - Shana Clarke

Glad we got to check out the OG of the sake bar speakeasies. Steight is tucked away behind a hair salon and it is so beautiful once you step in. Love the vibe, the ambience and the service is just as good. The cocktails we had were perfect for a night cap and we would keep coming back to this place for everything it has to offer.

Cozy hidden bar with just a handful of seats and a moody, vinyl-spinning vibe. The sake selection is the highlight for me. Bartenders are friendly and skilled. Nate is highly knowledgeable and makes great cocktails. Can be a wait as it fills up but the atmosphere makes it worth the wait.

One of my favorite recent spots for sure! Finding it is half the fun. It's a cozy and intimate space for fun Japanese-themed cocktails. Some favorites were the Sakura Smoke Old Fashioned and the Ma-Chet Baker. The staff is chill, super friendly and kind.

I wish I could give this place a million star rating. We had planned a NYC trip from DC and we saw this place on Instagram. Our hotel was in Brooklyn and we walked across the Manhattan bridge to this place and 20/10 would walk that 1.5 miles again, no questions. Just from the start, coming in from a hair salon fake wall is still a novelty. The bartender was so knowledgeable on the flavors of the dozen+ sakes we tried. It was just an hour plus of conversations over drinks… after a long week of work, it was the first time I was actually able to remain in the moment. We did multiple cocktails and a sake flight for each of us. It was no relaxing and fun. The owner came back after hearing where we came from and got us a complimentary drink. I almost regret writing this review because I would prefer this place to be low-key, but this place is so great I just have to say it. 10/10 will return every time we head back into the city.

My new favorite bar. It’s cozy and intimate. The bartender was knowledgeable about sake and set us up with a great sake flight. The cocktails were also delicious and well made. Definitely a gem.

One of my favorite spots in the neighborhood — incredible vibes, whether you’re there at opening when it’s quiet or when it’s packed to the brim (technically 12 seats), great music. Nate is an amazing bartender and you can’t go wrong with any of the cocktails or a surprise sake flight (that said, I’m partial to their shochu lemon sour). Highly recommend!

StEight is a wonderful haven where you can forget you’re in the middle of the concrete jungle. The door feels like a little portal, transporting you to a place where time is suspended and your nervous system gets a full reset. Nate is an unmatched expert in sake and will take good care of you while spinning the best tunes. The cocktails are all hits, but I also highly recommend the sake flight or plum wine. Whether you go solo, on a date, or with a crew, it'll be a good time.

StEight is one of my crew’s favorite places in NYC. located behind the salon, you’re welcomed by low lighting and jazz records. The staff are extremely knowledgeable about their sake collection. All of their cocktails are really creative and sake based. They also have imported Japanese beer as well as local Japanese inspired brands.
