Where to Learn About Sake in New York City

"A speakeasy-style sake bar reached through a second-floor hair salon, offering a long, narrow space where vinyl records and jazz set the mood. The program focuses on cutting-edge brews and inventive pours—such as bottles from one of Japan’s few female brewers—and also serves shochu-based cocktails alongside specialty sakes." - Shana Clarke

Glad we got to check out the OG of the sake bar speakeasies. Steight is tucked away behind a hair salon and it is so beautiful once you step in. Love the vibe, the ambience and the service is just as good. The cocktails we had were perfect for a night cap and we would keep coming back to this place for everything it has to offer.

Lovely Japanese bar serving some great cocktails with vinyl records playing and a very lively atmosphere-- easily became my favorite bar in the Lower East Side! Sake Flight: the bartenders are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, and will cater to your preferences! We asked for something adventurous and he delivered with a flight with a good variety! Cocktail 5/5 Matchet Baker -- smooth and earthy genmaicha 5/5 Oolong Punch -- light and fruity 5/5 Chaos Belly -- citrusy on first sip and ends with a sweet blueberry flavor 5/5 Zack San 75 5/5 Lychee(less) Martini Caution-- it is a small ~12seat bar so there will be a wait for a seat if you come later in the night. Best suited for solo or date night!

One of my favorite recent spots for sure! Finding it is half the fun. It's a cozy and intimate space for fun Japanese-themed cocktails. Some favorites were the Sakura Smoke Old Fashioned and the Ma-Chet Baker. The staff is chill, super friendly and kind.

Drinks were excellent. Ambiance was incredible. Bartender (working 9/5) was dismissive and rude, which is much more acceptable in my book if there was anyone else in the bar but there wasn’t. Would be a perfect 5 stars if it wasn’t for the cranky bartender. Represents the worst of the LES apathetic service industry culture. I would also like to make clear that I am a massive fan of this place, been here dozens of times and the bartenders have always been charismatic and helpful even with a full bar. I think this one bartender in particular is much better suited for a place like Winnie’s or Clockwork where there is no bare minimum to expect.

Beloved spot with unique local vibes. Always a great mix of people and energy regardless of the day of the week. Ideal atmosphere for dates or drinks with a small group of friends. I always enjoy a cocktail and if I’m lucky enough, a sake flight from Nate. Wonderful place for both the sake connoisseur and newcomer to explore new sakes.

Cozy hidden bar with just a handful of seats and a moody, vinyl-spinning vibe. The sake selection is the highlight for me. Bartenders are friendly and skilled. Nate is highly knowledgeable and makes great cocktails. Can be a wait as it fills up but the atmosphere makes it worth the wait.

If you get here early in the evening you can get a seat but if there are none, you can stand if you’re comfortable with that. The snacks are expensive in a way that’s not quite worth it, the sparkling sake was good

My new favorite bar. It’s cozy and intimate. The bartender was knowledgeable about sake and set us up with a great sake flight. The cocktails were also delicious and well made. Definitely a gem.
