I visited Stella Jean's twice now. The first time was at the one in Point Loma, and tried a few different flavors before I settled on the Ube Pandesal Toffee ice cream. I'm not the biggest fan of ube as it can be over-sweetened with added sweeteners/sugar, but it seems that this place has given it just the right amount of sweetness, and it doesn't give off that artificial (after)taste. The added toffee and pandesal comes through to give it a nice blend of extra goodness with every bite.
The second time was at the University Heights. I tried the S,mores flavor, which I didn't try the first time, basically because I thought that s'mores tasted the same everywhere. I was completely wrong. The color of the s'mores ice cream probably isn't something you'd expect to see as it looks more grayish than anything else. But the flavors, along with the crunch of the "graham cracker," the bits of chocolate, and what seems like baby mallows, makes for a delightful party in your mouth. I definitely wanted a scoop of that, but I also didn't want to leave without getting the ube again. Luckily, they had pre-packed pints of ube, so I got a pint of ube to eat sometime during the week, and got a scoop of the s'mores to eat that day. My dilemma was that I wanted to enjoy my ice cream at home, so I asked the person there, Veronica, if I could have it in a cup (for travel) AND a cone (to eat like a kid/Biden). Veronica did me one better and offered to put it in a single-scoop container and wrap the cone for me. I was pleasantly surprised they did such a thing, and of course I said yes. I then asked if she could wrap up another cone (for my ube at a later time.)
I know every place gives you the chance of tipping, but I don't really tip all the time when the person/cashier, however, Veronica, in her positive energy and her offering the container and wrapping the cone was going the extra step to making me happy was the deciding factors in actually tipping, because she deserved it.
Although she didn't disclose there was an added fee for the single-scoop container (.25), the convenience was worth it. It took me about 20 minutes to get home, and the ice creams made it home intact (unmelted) and I got to enjoy it in the comfort of my home.
This is definitely the place for unique flavors and I recommend you try a sample before you just choose because some of them are just too unique and might not work for some people's flavor palette.
