Stella's has earned many awards over the years and those are proudly noted on a card kept with the menus on each table. It had been on my list of places to try for some time -- and now I was in the area at lunchtime... With expectations high, I was ready for a great meal. Sadly, my experience fell short of the mark.
I like the fact that their hamburger meat is never frozen and is hand-smashed on the grill. I like that they serve them "with everything" and clearly state that means lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and mayo. So why then, are there additional charges for a long list of toppings? You have to pay extra to 'have it your way'.
With hindsight, I suppose I should have ordered one of the specialty burgers. But I wanted to taste their basic burger on its own merits (I did splurge for the grilled onions; but they were scantly there). It was a good, solid burger and I enjoyed it. Nevertheless, it fell short of any "best burger" claims.
Since I was born in Idaho, I was excited to see that the fries were touted as being from hand-cut, fresh Idaho potatoes. That is the gold standard for fries. Sadly, the fries were disappointing -- mostly soggy, some were somewhat blackened. Overpriced too. 3 stars at most for those fries.
On the other hand, service was great while the vibe and atmosphere were super. Those factors salvaged my overall rating of 4 stars.
