Best Boston Cream Pie | Eater Boston

"This Newbury street stalwart is a perennial favorite for a drink and snack after an afternoon shopping, and if you’re craving something sweet, the dessert menu offers an adorable individual Boston cream pie, made with yellow sponge cake, vanilla cream filling and topped with chocolate sauce." - Tanya Edwards

My dad and I stopped in on the 4th of July. We put our names down for a 30 min wait but ended up being seated outside in less than 10. The people watching was great. Our server was amazing - haven’t that great of attention to detail in awhile! We got a couple of cocktails, calamari, tomato and burrata salad, pasta, and a Boston cream pie. Every thing had a lot of flavor and was delicious! Would definitely come back!

Google
First time here. We frequent Boston and have not been able to find a good breakfast place. This spot hit the mark. Very good blood mary. Huge portions and great tasting food.

Google
Really good restaurant on Newberry Street. Service and atmosphere was incredible and it was pretty busy so it was great seeing that we were able to be taken care of in that manner. Food was good, just not spectacular. Caesar salad had slightly too much dressing but it didn’t ruin the salad. I would get it again.

Google
Overall it was a nice experience. There were not too many people in Stephanie's the day we visited, but the food might have taken a bit longer than expected to be served. I orderd a Tuna Tartare and a Ceasar salad, my friend ordered some fish and chips, the meal was fulfilling. The portion is good for the price, and the atmosphere is also cozy on a cold day. Great place for brunch.

Google
Food was great and service was super friendly. Our server, I don’t remember her name 🫣, but she was super friendly and funny. The country Greek salad was really good, the portion size is large! It was very fresh and a good option if you want something that will make you feel light afterwards. The tuna tartare was really good too and the chips it comes with were super crunchy and delicious to pair it up. Thanks for everything.

Google
Always a must for dining when in Boston. Nice menu offerings, great for brunch, superb Bloody Marys and other libations to suit your taste. Fresh and tasty dishes for any time of day dining. Indoor and outdoor dining too.

Google
My Boston native friend Janelle and New Yorker native me enjoyed the relaxed Fri lunch at Stephanie's with great seafood, wine, and service very much! It was fun to do people watching on Newbury Street while enjoying typical Boston seafood such as New England Clam Chowder and Fish and Chips! This is my new favorite place in Boston!

Google
Food is AMAZING! For the price you pay for the items on the menu is completely worth it. I feel everywhere else in Boston is overcharged for what you are getting. Very disappointed that the banana bread with the raspberry and PB is no longer on the menu… it was DELICIOUS!

Yelp
We stopped in to rest and get warm intending only to have a coffee but the place was so pretty and the menu so interesting that we ended up eating. My open face everything sandwich was an interesting pile of veggies on a toast with a lemon vinaigrette. It was superb. And even though I was still full from breakfast I ate it all. It was that good. The clam chowder was very good And the brownie sundae was huge and delicious. The service was good but a bit spotty. I highly recommend that you try that delightful veggie sandwich.

Yelp
It was a regular schmegular restaurant. Pretty good food, but salty from what I remember. the service was nice but not very quick, but that could have changed depending on any given day. I believe we only went because it was the only place that could seat us on a saturday for brunch without any reservations so we were just happy they took us! inside was big and clean and modern enough as well!

Yelp
Lovely spot for brunch! We made a reservation the night before and we were seated right away. On street parking and the entrance and gender neutral restrooms are accessible. Linda was our server and she was quick to get our coffee, tea and bloody Mary's. I did not have one but I appreciated the checklist & pencil to ensure each Bloody Mary was perfectly made to order. The brunch menu was unique and everything sounded good to me. We shared the monkey bread appetizer. It was warm, crispy, gooey, sweet and delicious! Hubby had the skillet breakfast but his eggs were not over easy and the biscuit lacked flavor (he said it was not worth eating). My huevos rancheros were perfect - two corn tortillas topped with pork carnitas, scrambled eggs, etc. I would have liked more avocado, but it was the perfect size meal for me - I was not stuffed. The coffee was good and strong and I did have to flag Linda down to get a second cup. We had a relaxing meal, were not rushed, and we would definitely stop back when in the area!

Yelp
We got the pancakes and chicken salad--both of which we loved. The pancakes were light and fluffy, served with syrup and cinnamon butter. The chicken salad was hearty, made with big chunks of chicken and light on the mayo which I prefer. The toast for the chicken salad was delicious and grainy while the greens were crisp. All around, the food was fresh, creative, and served in extra large portions. The outdoor seating was lovely, especially for a sunny Sunday. Only complaint would be the slow service (we were never given water and had to ask twice), but given it was a busy day it is understandable! I would definitely come back and try more of the menu, all of the food looked amazing.

Yelp
Stop in for lunch was able to get outside seating which is great people watching. I had the traditional club sandwich and my wife had the open face chicken sandwich which the waitress recommended. Waitress was very attentive and service was quick.
google avatar

Doug M.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere. Good staff. Food looked good, but seemed a bit too bland. Some more seasonings could have punched it up.
google avatar

Srinithi R.

Yelp
I came here for lunch and was blown away. I really enjoyed the Mezze Plate which has an assortment of hummus, tzatziki, olives and pita bread. The portion was large and super filling. The ambiance was super cozy with an upscale vibe. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. Will definitely come back again.
google avatar

Kristine S.

Yelp
Went with friends and had a great experience. The place gets crowded at Brunch so highly recommend recommendations. Service was good and wait staff were attentive. Portion sizes were large and none of us finished our meals. Great place for brunch.

Brooke R.

Yelp
We were here during the Boston Marathon. Service was great, the food was AMAZING! The meatloaf was an easy 10/10! The restaurant was clean and had a great vibe! We will be back for sure! I recommend it to everyone I know visiting Boston!

Yelp
The truffle fries! Are! So! Yummy! The stephs sandwich was also really good and is worth the price in my opinion. I would definitely recommend the truffle fries (perfect crunch). We went around 12pm and it wasn't too packed, but usually there is a good amount of people there. Our waitress was friendly and I like the vibes of the place for brunch.
google avatar

Becky T.

Yelp
Me and my husband shared with smoked fish breakfast. Everything was excellent. Servers in and around bar area were very friendly and accommodating.

Yelp
I will start by noting that this place had no wait, lovely AC or outdoor seating, and yummy food. These are all great reasons to stop by and the location is fabulous if you're on Newbury or in the Back Bay area. The only qualms I have is that the food is rather expensive and I asked for the bolognese without dairy but it's premade. I guess just keep in mind that substitutions/removals might be more difficult here? And one small thing is that it's one of those places with the tiny cups of water but no pitcher at the table so I had to ask for a refill 3-4 times. Overall, good food and convenient stop!
google avatar

Brooke C.

Yelp
I went here for the hot chocolate flight and it did not disappoint! I arrived around noon on a Saturday and was able to walk right in and find 3 seats together at the bar. The hot coco flight was only $14 I believe and it was both beautiful and delicious! I loved the presentation. Service was very quick as well. No complaints!
google avatar

Kevin Z.

Yelp
Cool Boston visitor brunch place with outdoor seating. Food a bit overpriced and typical American.
google avatar

Dallas E.

Yelp
Not Celiac friendly at all. My wife had the only thing recommended by our waiter, which was the Chicken Salad sandwich on GF toast. It was a huge portion, but nothing we would go back for. I had the basic ham Benedict, and it was also fine, but not something I would go back for. We walked by several times around lunch time, over the 4 days we were in town, and it always seems super busy, but i'm just not really sure why.
google avatar

Jake D.

Yelp
Had a FANTASTIC MEAL! Marcus was great. I got a burger and it was absolutely scrumptious, couldn't have been happier! Definitely want to return the next time we are in this city called Boston. WOW!
google avatar

Amaziah A.

Yelp
The Rigatoni was delicious. I forgot our servers name but the customer service was very good. Ordered a tequila mule and it was made well. For price, atmosphere, and service its pretty good
google avatar

Ilene S.

Yelp
Stopped on for a late dinner. The tuna tartar was a good size with an amazing wasabi sauce on the side. The burger was juicy with a large portion of French fries. The steak tips had a good flavor. Service was good but the bar response was slow.
google avatar

Yelp
If you are looking for a traditional weekend brunch look no further than Stephanie's on Newbury. You come for the famous bloody Mary's disappointing this time was no shrimp topping. Food is good. I would not say outstanding, it's your basic breakfast fare. They do offer gf options

Katie M.

Yelp
I haven't been to this restaurant in years, but remembered it fondly so brought the whole family. First, it was uncomfortably hot inside (we specifically asked about the temp inside- we were told the AC was strong - it wasn't) there were cobwebs hanging from the ceiling, just didn't seem clean. Very loud inside. I ordered a Frose, trying to cool down, and was told first the machine was broken. And then later, that it would take a long time. Ok. Food was nothing special, but very pricey. My toddler and I shared the chowder and a salad- and we both ended up violently ill. I'm guessing that the produce wasn't properly washed. I would avoid this restaurant.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I came here after getting off of a flight because we were hungry and it was convenient. Service was slow, but our server was nice. We got monkey bread and the breakfast skillet. The monkey bread was good, the breakfast skillet was odd. The eggs kind of tasted like toilet water, the potatoes were hot but undercooked on the inside, and the sausage and bacon were cold. It was nice inside, but for the price was a little disappointed.

Yelp
I loved everything about Stephanie's from the food to the ambience to the service! Incredible all the way Food: we ordered the cheesy corn bread for the table which was delicious. It came with maple butter which was absolutely delectable. For my main I ordered the mac and cheese lobster which was also amazing! Very heavy! I recommend splitting this with someone next time you are here. The lobster tasted so good Service: amazing and really kind waitress! She even helped split our checks down to dividing the price of shared items like the cheesy corn bread Ambience: this is right on Newbury with a beautiful view. Inside is big with loads of space Price: fair prices given quality and portion sizes!

Allison B.

Yelp
I've eaten there several times and love the food and service. However, this time it just felt scammy. The rice bowl was priced at $15 ~ but then below it, it specified the proteins: $15 salmon, $17 steak , etc. We didn't realize it was a $32 bowl. Left kind of a bitter taste/ felt like a scam considering the salmon was tiny. Would come back but not for that bowl. Shouldn't have been a $100 meal you know :/ just sus.

Carol Z.

Yelp
Fast, delicious food. Really great service, would definitely eat here again and would recommend to anyone
google avatar

Yelp
SPEEDDY service. Got our food within 5 minutes of ordering. The kitchen is so on top of everything the salad was epic and chowder was delicious. Their bloody Mary's seem unreal and I will def be trying one topped w a mini burger next time I go! They also have ample seating inside and outside that is tastefully arranged with casual elegant decor.
google avatar

Yelp
I visited Stephanie's on Newbury for the first time to try out their weekend brunch! It's definitely a super popular and busy spot. We came in a large group and our waitress was super accommodating and friendly! Service was really good for such a busy restaurant. Although the restaurant had a fun and lively atmosphere, some of the brunch options weren't my favorite. I got the lobster Benedict and even though it had a decent amount of lobster, it was pretty dry. We also got the mezze platter to share but a lot of the options tasted super salty. The best part of the meal hands down was the pecan roll, it's definitely a must have!
google avatar

Sharon S.

Yelp
Service was good, however, evening was marred by a dead bug in my colleagues Lobster Mac and Cheese. Waitress and manager offered to replace the meal but my colleague was too grossed out to eat anything the rest of the evening. That being said, everyone else's meal was ok. I had to ask server and manager to do more than just comp my colleagues drink. So they ended up taking off another meal off of our bill.

Yelp
Not sure why they are packed, but certainly not the worst in the area. We stopped in for brunch on a cold Saturday afternoon. The place was jammed pack. The host was cold, no welcome and could care less with no eye contact. Never a good start. The restaurant is cavernous and we were escorted away to a rear upper dining room, which was fine, but not as nice as the main dining room. This room also quickly filled up. Our waiter seemed nice enough and I ordered one of their "famous" bloody mary's, where you build what you would like. It was good, but honestly nothing special. As it was a brunch menu there was a mix of sweets, breakfast fare and savory items. I'm a sucker for monkey bread and was delighted to see it on the menu. It was only a few minutes after placing the order that the dish arrived. Sadly, it was room temperature and unfortunately the center was raw. We picked around the outside but the inner portion was inedible. Further, our waiter did not check back at us until our main was dropped at the table. I told him the monkey bread could have used some more time in the oven and had an undercooked center, and he asked what he could do. We did not want, nor could eat another. The dish was NOT removed from our check which I think would have been an appropriate gesture. Service was lackluster and I think our server was afraid to checkin on us any further. When servers know the food may not be great, they tend to not checkin. The breakfast burger we ordered was unremarkable. It was my wife's birthday which I had noted in the reservation and there was no acknowledgement from the host, or waiter. I suppose it is just not that kind of place. Essentially diner fare, at a premium price. There are much better choices in Back Bay and I don't think we would return here and I can't recommend.

R F.

Yelp
Menu is interesting, delicious twists on standard brunch fare and outdoor seating allowed our out of town guests to take in the Newbury Street scene. And while the skillet breakfast was just what our guests wanted (had seen someone have it at previous visit) , two of us got burned on the skillet - just by accidentally knocking into it. Put a mitt on the handle please!
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
We accidentally made our reservation for the wrong day, but the host was able to get us a table anyways! We ordered the mezze platter to share which had a variety of dips to enjoy with warm pita bread. Our server was kind enough to let us know that we could order extra pita bread if we needed. I ordered the turkey club for myself which was so big I could barely finish half of it! I would highly recommend Stephanie's on Newbury for a yummy meal on one of Boston's most famous streets!
google avatar

Danan R.

Yelp
Still a solid option for a group meal on Newbury with something for everyone. Be sure to try the lobster salad which is just a small add on to any of the salads. Portions are generous and the fare is good.
google avatar

Yelp
I LOVED this place. Nestled in the heart on Newbury street in beloved Boston. The BLOODY MARY IS TO DIE. You literally fill out a form and BUILD your Bloody Mary! LIKEEEEEEEE! It's was DELISH! Our server was super nice! The place is so cute. Highly recommend reservations!!! They were very accommodating as well. Everything was so YUMMY. I wanna gatekeep but here ya go!

Yelp
What a treat! Had brunch here today with my cousin who has been visiting Boston. I've been wanting to come here and finally had the chance! Both of us got the butternut squash soup and split a turkey club. The butternut squash was pure divinity. We did our best to eat every ounce , scraping the bowl until we couldn't anymore. The pumpkin seeds were a nice touch. The cream in the middle really popped out the flavors of the soup. We couldn't get enough. The turkey club was great! The bread was perfectly grilled. The bacon was wonderfully crispy. The avocado blended nicely into the sandwich. It was the perfect complement to the soup! I also got an appletini- it was delicious! My cousin enjoyed her dry martini. I ended my meal with two cups of tea. Service was fantastic. It's such a cute restaurant- lots of seating. It's usually packed and now I truly know why. Will be back for sure to try more of their menu! Happy end of 2023.

Yelp
Good, not great... and pricy. Service at the bar (during brunch, thin crowd) was soft and too inattentive (like, twice asking for more water). The Cinnamon Monkey Bread was yum for an app. The mocktails were good, but $10 for mixed fruit juice is nuts (I realized I could have ordered a glass of the two juices for $4 a piece). The salmon flat bread was good, not great. Flat bread a bit doughy. It's like the dish didn't know what it wanted to be. The skillet was heavy on the breakfast taters covered in cheese... eggs over easy were medium. The biscuit, though, wow! The size of a horse saddle it was. So, again, good but not great.

Yelp
Newbury Street is adorable! This quaint area is perfectly tucked in the Back Bay area of Boston with tons of restaurants and shops! We were originally going to eat across the street for dinner but didn't want to wait 30-45 minutes (an average wait time for dinner on a Friday in the area). After strolling over to Stephanies on Newbury, we were promptly seated with the option of indoor or outdoor seating. Waitstaff were friendly, professional, and made a mean drink! Stephanies is known for serving sophisticated comfort food, and that's exactly what you get. The menu is filled with American classics with a local twist. We had 2 entrees- the Stephi Burger and Skirt Steak Frites. The burger was decadent! 10oz of goodness topped with cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon, onion strings, and spicy mayo mmmhmmm that's the good stuff! The steak was delicious too... but not as good coming back up. Piled high on truffle fries and drenched in chimichurri sauce caused for an oily mess both on the plate and in my stomach. A very tough go around :/ Overall, the ambiance, service and drinks were great but not sure I'll be stopping here again ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
google avatar

Janice H.

Yelp
We love Stephanie's. It has a great ambience and the service was phenomenal. Super fun decor inside we loved our meal and would most definitely go back again.
google avatar

Niamh M.

Yelp
I was here on July 4th and I ordered the turkey sandwich. My friend had finished her food but I was still eating my fries. The waitress came over and cleared my friends plate and then came back and lifted my plate while I was still eating the fries (I was literally still chewing!!). The food was nice, I had been another for brunch and really enjoyed the pancakes but after that service I don't think I will be back anytime soon.
google avatar

rachel m.

Yelp
I'd come back here! It was full when we came on a Saturday afternoon but the bar had plenty of seats and we got served right away. They have a big patio outside which is nice when the weather is enjoyable. Half menu was breakfast and lunch so plenty of variety depending on what you want at noon on a weekend. Little pricey but given the neighborhood, not surprising.

Kaylee G.

Yelp
The service was good and the ambience was cute, but the food is lackluster and the prices are not worth what you get. My pancakes were good enough but nothing special. The monkey bread (not pictured) was horrible and super crumbly. I'd recommend other brunch spots on newbury st over this one- it's okay, but not worth the high prices. The eggs also don't appear to be high quality
google avatar

Ciara S.

Yelp
The worst experience ever!!! The food was worse than the service!!!!!!! The waiter was no where to be found... Never in my life have I had such flavorless food.
google avatar

Sarah E.

Yelp
Can you ever go wrong with truffle fries? We also highly recommend the Greek appetizer platter. (Hummus, babaganoush, falafel) The bruschetta grilled cheese was just okay, it was just a little to much. Definitely a nice stop to sit on the patio and have a quick lunch or a drink with friends.

Pam A.

Yelp
Terrible service. We were seated in the bar high tops. apparently the waiter couldn't walk down the step. He had to talk over the plexiglass for anything that we needed. He not only forgot one of entrées, he said I didn't think you wanted it, which is odd because we did order it and then we said forget it once the other food came. And then again over the plexiglass what do you need? What do you want. Is there a reason he couldn't walk down two steps to help the customers, never again. They were also out of one of the entrée choices, really. Corn bread great because of the maple butter, the rest, pass.

Laura K.

Yelp
Messed up order. Menu did not provide all ingredients. Fresh cheese on salad was a canned.
google avatar

Karina C.

Yelp
They discriminate against people with service animal if they don't see a physical disability. Completely unprofessional and in violation of ADA. Didn't care to ask the proper questions that a business can and should ask when in doubt. After the public embarrassment of being denied service, I came back to show the manager the official letter in which no one should ever have to do that since one's specific disability is their privacy, but they have the right to know what's the function of the service animal. Instead of being super apologetic and inviting me back, I heard the most BS excuse that they need to be on top of things because of all the ESA and etc. Not my problem, they need to have proper training with handling these types of cases. The manager in the grey suit in the photo was the incompetent being.
google avatar

Geri T.

Yelp
Very cool place to people watch. We sat out on the patio overlooking Newberry Street - great ambience, except that the food was mediocre at best. Service was ok.

Kelsey P.

Yelp
HUGE portions. GREAT brunch. I dont know why its rating is so low. Highly recommend the short rib hash-- you can definitely split 1 entree for 2 people and will still be very full. A little pricey but if you split its a great deal, and personally i think its one of the better brunches in boston
google avatar

Rachelle T.

Yelp
I told my friend that I wanted to try a Boston Cream Pie and she brought me here for brunch/lunch for the start of a shopping day at Newbury Street. Pretty cute and trendy place, crowded outside, but we had a nice, quiet booth inside. We were able to easily make reservations ahead of time and got seated quickly. Entrees were good, but a bit pricey. We ordered the grilled cheese and burger. It was pretty good, but not too memorable, tbh. What was memorable and the best part of the meal was the Boston Cream Pie which we had for dessert! I loved that it wasn't overly sweet and it wasn't heavy either. It was my first time eating a Boston Cream Pie and it definitely worth the hype!
google avatar

Oliver G.

Yelp
What a fun experience. After checking out shops on Newbury, we needed a bite to eat. Being a tourist, I want to try the lobster roll. It was fantastic. Rich, but easily cut with a crisp local IPA. The ambiance is nice enough to dress up, but if not, no worries, the service was warm and friendly.
google avatar

Ayatt A.

Yelp
After all these years, I finally tried Stephanie's on Newbury. Their patio is always busy in the summer but we had no problem sitting inside with no reservation on a thursday night. We started with the calamari and it was perfect. Super crispy and not too greasy. I highly recommend it as a starter! For the main course we had the rice bowl with tofu, (which was delicious and filling ), and the chopped salad with grilled chicken. The salad was a good size and tasty, but the bacon pieces were hard as a rock, and the grilled chicken was the most dry chicken ive ever had in my life. I took one bite and brought the rest home to try and salvage in a chicken salad with a whole lot of mayo. Our service was great and besides the chicken, the food was good. Its worth a try if youre on Newbury!
