Reflecting on the Napa Wineries Damaged by Fire in 2020 - AFAR

"This hillside winery features a gondola that carries guests above vineyards to a tasting room and a patio with broad valley views; it bottles merlot and, even when the author was a child, served as a multigenerational attraction that entertained guests from grandparents to kids. The writer recalls a family visit in a 1970 Datsun, warm sun, goofy photos, and an early sense of the region’s abundance. After wildfire rumors circulated, the property was reported to have survived the latest blaze." - Julia Cosgrove

I had an amazing experience touring this winery. Each tasting was excellent. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The views from the winery were stunning, and the Gondola Ride to the reserve was perfect. We were able to join and become members, so now we can continue to enjoy their excellent selections! It was a memorable visit and definitely a highlight of our time in the vineyards.

We had an absolutely incredible experience at Sterling! We booked the Tour & Terrace package which included 3 wines along a self guided tour and 3 wines as well as cheese at a seated table on their beautiful terrace. It also included the gondola ride which gave a stunning view of Napa Valley. All of the staff members were nice and informative and we were even allowed to keep a Sterling wine glass. We were able to take our time and enjoy walking around the winery as well as taking pictures on the terrace. Would recommend this experience to anyone! It was definitely the best value for the price out of all the places we visited this trip.

Google
First time here since the remodel and it was lovely! We did the very casual walking tour and tasting and we went at a comfortable pace and tasted 4 wines. They were all wonderful. The staff was so friendly and knowledgeable. Seriously from the wonderful person at the ticket booth to the gondola greeter to Lisa, Tina and the other 3 lovely people. Can't remember their names. The new gondola was beautiful.

Google
Sterling Vineyards is a beautiful place and definitely worth visiting, but a few things to keep in mind. Bring a hat because it gets super sunny and hot. If someone in your group isn’t drinking, they do offer the experience at a lower price, which is nice. The tour takes you through the bottling rooms, and they explain the whole wine-making process, which is actually really cool. The cheese pairing part honestly isn’t worth it, so I’d skip it next time. Weekends get really busy, so try to get there around 12 pm. Parking is free and easy to find. And the gondola ride up is amazing.

Google
What a wonderful experience at Sterling Vineyards. The ride up on the gondola was so special. Enjoyed the self guided tour and tasting, all the server's were great. Once on the terrace the views were spectacular. Our host Rob made everything special and when we learned of the Wine Club we jumped on it. Can't wait to return and enjoy the Founders Room experience.

Google
I cannot recommend this winery ENOUGH! This is a bucket list trip for my mom, and my husband & I both enjoy wine. The 3 of us love learning and trying…but oh my goodness. Pay the extra $10 for the Hilltop Tasting. The gondola ride is enough of a treat in itself, but to have wine with the views and an amazing charcuterie board is beyond. We can’t thank Andrew enough for all his hospitality and expertise, especially growing up here. He was amazing in the tasting room. THANK YOU STERLING!

Google
Sterling was our first stop of seven in our weekend birthday celebration and WOW did they set the bar high. We did not have much experience with the wine but numerous friends recommended that we visit Sterling and I am soooo glad they did. Right from the beginning from the gondola up to the top of the hill this experience was set apart from the rest. The entire facility is extremely clean with an overall beautiful design and layout. Entering the tasting room we were immediately impressed with the calm vibe. We were then introduced to Maurice and this man is the absolute best. He was personable, accommodating, kind, and offered great recommendations. We left there not only happy but with a wine club membership that we will be hanging on to for a while. Too bad we live in Florida otherwise, we would be there every month!

Google
Oh wow. This vineyard truly is an experience beyond any other vineyard we saw or visited. The tasting rooms and walkable areas are situated atop a small mountain, requiring you to buy a gondola pass (15 minute ride) to go up to the top. Once atop this small mountain, there is a massive, sprawling experience of wine tastings available. There is an amazing walking tour, which takes you to all major facilities of the wine production cycle. There are wine tasting venues with panoramic views of the entire valley. For those who choose the hilltop experience, this very special building sits atop all others and has a truly unique experience. Your private wine tasting (Steven was absolutely amazing) is self paced and provides such a rich history of the vineyard, each wine, the fields, and more. I truly cannot say enough about this phenomenal experience.

Yelp
The scenery is great, the wine is very good, an unforgettable experience Recommend more people to come.

Yelp
Just had a delightful experience at Sterling Vineyards. We opted for the Founder's Experience and WOW! The Ambiance: This is what draws people in. Having a private Gondola take us up to the dining and tasting area is something that can't be missed. It was included with our tasting and we truly enjoyed the spectacular views while taking our short, comfortable, intimate ride up the hill. The quality atmosphere doesn't stop with the gondola though. Once we arrived at the primary building, we were impressed with the attention to detail all around. Everything is designed to create a relaxing, enjoyable experience. Food and Wine: We had exceptionally crafted food and wine pairing and that alone would be worth the trip. Quail, duck, and other tasty treats along with top quality wines (only available on property) were some of our favorite highlights. Service: We were fortunate enough to have Brooklyn taking care of us. Her professionalism, friendly nature, plus her mastery knowledge of the wines and Sterling Vineyards truly elevated our time at Sterling. Thanks so much!!

Yelp
I wish I took more pictures but I was indulgent with the experience more. I never thought I would enjoy this experience since I don't drink wine or liquor, but I did. A little sip there and then, then pour on the bucket and next to the other one. The winery has a very nice touch of elegance and the scenery was also breathtaking. The smell of the white wine that was first served was so good and captivating, with a little hint of sweetness. It was very nice. The red wines left my palate dry but it was still captivating and smelled aromatic. The last one was my favorite, it's the 2021 Malvasia Bianca which I find it so refreshing after tasting several other wines, because it's the sweetest of them all. It was so good that we decided to get one for ourselves even if we don't drink.. The aroma of this wine is really sweet, without tasting it, the smell can tell that it was sweet. And the first sip doesn't give justice to the flavor and experience I have for the first time. I enjoy it very much. However, the bathroom was gender neutral. I don't oppose it, but men do pee while standing up and it splash everywhere.. making it much nastier... dirtier... and smelling worse... which I don't appreciate. There's a person on duty to clean though which is good. So that's why it's only minus 0.5. So it's still 5 star overall.

Yelp
One of the best experiences I had in a winery, if you want to talk and know about the wines they will give you the full background of the wine. Service is based on the experience you requested. The over all ambiance or experience was 9/10 only because the way to go in you go out and get congested in walk ways. However wine is great beautiful views!

Yelp
I visited Sterling Vineyards on a sunny, but cold afternoon. The gondola ride to the top is spectacular and well worth the trip. The experience we had was the "Sterling Stroll". It was 4 pours of wine at three stations, and these stations took you through the facility and ultimately outside onto a large deck with amazing views. Magnificent concept and nicely executed for guests. The wines were not stellar, but the experience as a whole was wonderful. Every wine host was gracious and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend this experience, and look for discounts to make it more affordable. But, even if you don't find a discount, strongly consider doing this. On a clear day.

Yelp
A unique winery to say the least. Upon entering, you ride in a gondola 300 feet above the sky in Calistoga where the wine tasting begins. We had a private tour by Napa's favorite, Chris M. who took us on our wine tasting journey and provided all the wonderful facts about the wines we were tasting, the process on how the wines are made through the embedded descriptions on the walls and tv prompts. As he read the scripts through our experience, we couldn't help but laugh because he isn't an actual employee at the winery. The second stop, we met Felix, she also enjoyed the lovely presentation by Chris. She was super friendly and entertained by our group... It was fun. The last stop was a roof top with a beautiful view of the winery with a kind man who kept refilling our glasses. We had a fabulous afternoon before dinner and would come back here again.

Yelp
Sterling Vineyards is a lovely place to visit and enjoy a wine tasting. We made reservations for the Hilltop Tasting which began with a short gondola ride up the mountain, to the tasting room. Beautiful views of the area! Once we arrived at the tasting room we were checked in, given a glass of white wine, and led to our table in a large room overlooking the hillsides. We had two different servers and both were very friendly and knowledgeable. We were given 5 tastings along with a meat and cheese pairing board. We enjoyed both of the Cabernets of which we took bottles home. You also have the opportunity to order additional snacks. Don't miss Sterling if you're in the area!

Yelp
Came to Sterling vineyard exclusively for the gondola ride and the view. This place is located on such a prime location, you can see it from most places. The tasting came with charcuterie and was $103 pp. You get the customary welcome glass of white, that was part of the tasting. Our wine expert wasn't very attentive, he came served the wine talked a little bit, but quickly went back to the people next to us as he was having a conversation with them. I felt we were a chore. In the end we finished our wine and cheese and left. He didn't even tried to sell us anything. When he realized we were leaving, he sort of tried to come talk to us, but we just left. This was the worst tasting I had as far as service. I don't typically like Sterling wine, so I am not deducing points for that. The place is beautiful, so is the winery. Service was lackluster.

Yelp
Sterling was my absolute favorite vineyard in terms of views and experience. If I were bringing guests back to Napa Valley, I would definitely take them to Sterling. We chose the $55 Sterling stroll experience. This included a ride on the gondola to and from the tasting which was self guided. The gondolas were so fun and at 10:30 in the morning, the fog had lifted over the mountains and it provided an amazing view on a sunny day. We preferred the self guided tour because we were able to take our time at each photo spot. We enjoyed the four tastings on the tour. If you're thinking about visiting Sterling I'd absolutely recommend it.

Yelp
My husband and I got to visit Sterling Vineyards last weekend which was such a treat! We were sad we weren't able to visit in 2022 and 2023 due to them recovering from the 2020 fires. But boy, was the wait worth it! We are so happy Sterling was able to preserve what they could and grow from it. We did the Hilltop Experience which was the most amazing way to start our Napa trip! Upon arrival, we took the air gondolas up to the winery. When we got to the entrance, we climbed another set of stairs to reach the Hilltop Experience. There we received a Sauvignon Blanc to start with. This experience came with a charcuterie board, which was so lovely to pair with our wines. Our hostess, Brooklynn, was an absolute pleasure to have guide us through our tasting! She gave us tips on how best to pair the cheeses and meats with the wines she served us. Brooklynn also had so much knowledge on the winery itself and the AVAs of Napa. We really enjoyed chatting with her and learning so much!! It's one of our favorite things to do when wine tasting in the Napa/ Sonoma valleys. After we did this experience, we were able to walk around the rest of the winery, where one of the tastings & self guided tours typically take place. It was a beautiful area to walk around in. The tasting bar area looked really nice too! I also loved the wall of relevant Sterling/ wine related events that have occurred over the years. If you get a chance to come here, I'd highly recommend!

Yelp
Love, love, love. The first time I heard of Sterling Platinum, I kinda chuckled and thought it sounded like a credit card. At any rate, I grabbed one, opened it that night and was quite surprised with taste and structure. Phenomenal. Can't wait to both try the bottles of Sterling Iridium I've had aging for years, as well as visit their vineyards on the next slow Napa roll. Thank you, Sterling Vineyards!

Yelp
Such a beautiful property and building, love the gondola experience and views riding up, wines are amazing, cheese plate pairing was so so so good and filling and the service was 10/10 and really made the experience. We did the hilltop tasting and loved it!

Yelp
What can I say, this was a great day! Ana is a rockstar! We were visiting Cali specifically to visit some wineries. The first stop was a non starter because they didn't accept walk ins (and with Cali Traffic, I didn't want to risk making a bunch of reservations we might have missed). Sterling has great marketing on social media, so when the first stop rejected us, we headed straight to Sterling and enjoyed the whole experience. We went with the wine and cheese option where we had a reserved table at the end of the walking tour. And mind you, if you do just the walking tour you still get wine throughout out the trail (you just get more if you choose the more expensive options). The views were spectacular and I thought it was a great value for the experience (but that doesn't mean I want to pay more for it! #StopInflation).

Yelp
Excellent views and GREAT wine! They offer a gondola ride across the property where you begin a self guided tour sampling wine along the way the final tasting area which offers panoramic views of the vineyards! If you get the $85 pkg you taste about 5 wines and it comes with a charcuterie board full of fresh and dried fruits, cheeses and crackers to complement the wine! You get to keep both the charcuterie board and the wine glasses! Our sommelier was very knowledgeable and upon finding out we preferred blends and cabs allowed us to taste a couple extra on the house!

Yelp
Went there in a nice sunny day and got the self guided tour with 5 glasses tasting. One of the nicest feature that separates them with the rest of the wineries in Napa is the cable car. I was here before the big fire and was stunned by the views up the mountain. This time everything is renovated and the cable cars are modernized and a lot bigger. With the fall colors, the viewing platform is changed into an exterior bar and it is such a pleasant place to hang out with wine. I would recommend anyone going to Napa to visit this winery! Wine tasting is great because you can take your own time to hang around the itinerary. The servers are chatty and cheerful which makes the experience even better.

Yelp
10/10 the staff was amazing! Shoutout to Rashida & Eli for the warm welcome and hosting for my bday! Eli is a great photographer! The vineyard is beautiful, the gondola is wonderful seating 8. So spacious and nice. The staff is great! The wine is delicious. The facilities are clean. The venue is gorgeous and the view spectacular!

Yelp
Sterling Vineyards Wine Tasting - Honestly, not worth it. For $85 a head, I expected something memorable, but it was just blah. The self-guided tour? Lame as fuck. You're basically wandering around aimlessly, looking at wine storage tanks like that's supposed to be exciting. Oh, and they have this projector setup, but guess what? No audio. Not exactly the immersive experience I had in mind. I walked out knowing absolutely nothing about the company or how they make their wine. For that price, I could've stayed home, bought a great bottle, and watched "How It's Made" on YouTube. At least then I'd actually learn something. Besides the storage rooms, you also get treated to the sight of rusty panels and roofs. Real classy, right? For a place that's supposed to be a premium experience, it sure felt like I was wandering around an industrial yard that hasn't been updated in decades. The gondola ride? Fine, I guess. The views were nice, but that's about it. The first staff member we ran into after stepping off the gondola was a total downer--grumpy as hell and clearly hated being there. Not exactly the warm welcome you'd expect from a place like this. Now, shoutout to Sean, the one bright spot in this whole experience. Dude was super chill, patient, and really made an effort to make my wife's birthday feel special. He gave us time to enjoy the views and the wine without rushing us, and honestly, that's the only reason this day wasn't a complete waste. But here's the thing--I just believe that my wife, who's a preschool teacher for special needs kids and works her heart out every single day, deserves so much more. I wanted to give her an exceptional experience, and I'm disappointed in myself for trusting that this vineyard would deliver that, especially since their website hyped it up like it was going to be something incredible. Instead, I feel like I got cheated on. They sold me on this idea of luxury and uniqueness, but it was all fluff with no substance. Bottom line? If your partner's happy, cool, maybe it's worth it. But if you're expecting a truly amazing wine tasting experience, skip this overpriced snoozefest and spend your money somewhere that actually delivers.

Yelp
Toe the Vine Founded by British ex-pat Peter Newton, Sterling Vineyards (SV) has been producing quality, award-winning wines in the Napa Valley since '64. SV was one of the first Napa wineries to produce Merlot & Chardonnay on their 1,200-acre picturesque property and are now known for innovation and multiple award-winning wines. Over the years, SV has had multiple owners--including Coca-Cola®?!--but are currently owned by Australia-based Treasury Wine Estates, who are like the Procter & Gamble of the wine world. They suffered near catastrophic damage in the 2020 "Napa Valley Glass Fire," but have since reopened a brand-new gorgeous facility. The Good: *Easy parking in their large private lot *Gondola ride is quite spectacular with some amazing views of the valley below. *And speaking of spectacular, the whole place is gorgeously built in Greek-style architecture with some English accents thrown in for food measure. The views from the top are also superlative. *Different types of tours available that range in the $55-125/per. We opted for the Sterling Stroll Experience ($55/per), which included a Gondola ride, five wine tastings, and behind the scenes access to the art and science of wine making. *They give you estimates for the tours, but since they're self-guided, you can go as fast or as slow as you want. *Staff was all very friendly and generous with the pours. *Gift and wine shop The Meh: *Reservations required for most of the tastings *No pets (service animals ok) The Ugly: *We didn't get the gondola ride down because of technical issues. This seems to happen a lot, so btwn that and the weather, be prepared that the gondola may not be in operation for one reason or another. Conclusion: We're not much into fermented grapes, but this was a really cool experience from the gondola to the views, and throw in some alcohol to the mix, and you've got yourself a fun time.

Yelp
Wow. What a perfectly curated experience! I actually haphazardly chose Sterling because I kept seeing their ads on Yelp, as it was near where I wanted to go that didn't have any open reservations. I'm so glad we discovered it, and it has been the most unique and picturesque winery visit out of the dozens of wineries I've visited over the years in Napa Valley. Highly recommend the stroll.

Yelp
This was such a beautiful experience. We visited several vineyards during our stay but this was by far my favorite. This is such a beautiful location. We arrived mid afternoon and jumped right into a gondola after paying for entry. The gondola took us to the winery. It was a comfortable ride with outstanding views. Once we made it to the winery we were given our glasses and the tour began. The tour was self directed so we were able to walk and drink at our own pace. If I recall correctly there were a total of 5 wines. We enjoyed them all. Even though I've experienced the tour and tasting, I wouldn't hesitate to return.

Yelp
The wine was absolutely delicious! Everyone there was very friendly and knowledgeable. The atmosphere was great and the weather was perfect! I love Napa!

Yelp
Fun and exciting wine tasting experience. It's place where you walk and tour the wine factory and taste wine. It's not a place to sit down since it was packed with people and there wasn't much space to sit and chat. They have a cute gift shop on the second floor and you can buy the wines you have just tried. The scenery from the top is breathtaking. Taking the gondola to the winery was a great experience. Make sure to visit to taste the delicious, aromatic wine and checkout the wine containers
google avatar

Jota P.

Yelp
Such a great idea and it's very cute to ride the funicular. However the "charcuterie " board was underpowered and the tasting room felt sterile. For the price and wines were very good but unremarkable. Great experience to bring your parents but go on a nice day when you can be allowed to sit outside.

Yelp
Decided to go wine tasting with the family to celebrate Father's Day, daughter's graduation as well as her turning 21. We had a good experience overall. Service was good. But I feel they go by personal preference when pouring you the wine for tasting. Some had more than a half glass. But for us, our wine glasses, it was less than 2 ounces (which is the standard wine tasting serving). We barely enjoyed the taste of each wine. I wish they wouldn't be so stingy with the serving size. I usually get buzz with wine tasting, but with this one, I guess the serving was too little to get me buzzed lol. Gondola experience: the ride up and down was very smooth. There is a phone holder for you to take a group photo. Wine tasting price plus gondola ride is $55/person. Kids or anyone who don't want to drink pays $25/person because that's the admission price and the gondola ride. Which is worth it. Overall I would recommend this place. But again, I wish they weren't so stingy with the wine tasting servings and be consistent with all of their paying customers.

Yelp
2.5 stars... It has been about 20 years since we visited Napa, and had fond memories of this joint so we knew we needed an encore! Booked the hilltop tasting, which included 5 wines and a charcuterie board. Wine was average, and the charcuterie board is a bit small for the price, and is split between two adults. Served a white when we arrived, which I thought was just a welcome gesture, but that was actually our first tasting, and unfortunately didn't get any info about it. After being seated someone promptly poured 2 more before our charcuterie board arrived. Waiters were flighting around and never really gave a good overview of the wines or history as we are accustomed to. Unfortunately this is no longer one of our favorites...felt like it was understaffed, and those who were working didn't have a good depth of knowledge. More assembly line than experience... Overpriced for average wines... we won't be back.

Yelp
We love the wine tasting experience here! Starting from gondola ride to the 5 different wine tasting. It was amazing!

KayAnna A.

Yelp
The gondolas sold us on this vineyard right away! We enjoyed our ride up and went straight to the tasting and through the "tour". I did enjoy our first and last tasting of the tour, but nothing else was to my personal liking. Everyone has different taste! I did LOVE their Pinot Gris but especially enjoyed their Muscat Canelli. I would go back for the tasting and tour for those alone. While the tour showed the beautiful views of the vineyards and property it was lacking in information throughout each section. While the wine was being poured, we were told about each wine, but not told much about what else we saw. Their restaurant at the end had the best views of the day!

Yelp
My friend and I flew into Charles Schultz airport on a Tuesday. On our way to Yountville, I had made a 2:00 PM reservations at Sterling for the Hilltop Experience (five winery exclusive wines paired with local cheese and charcuterie). Weather was perfect for the Gondola ride up. The tasting room was not open last year as it was being renovated from the fires... so all was new and beautiful! All the people that worked there were extremely nice, offering to take photos in and out of the Gondola. When we arrived at the top we were given a Sauvignon Blanc tasting then seated. The view from the top was amazing. Steven our Sommelier was excellent. Very friendly, very personable, and knowledgeable. We had 4 more tasting there after along with the Charcuterie Boards filled with local cheese and meats which went perfectly with all the wines. A definite stop worth going to between the gondola ride, views, service and tasting. Thank you Steven for making our time there so enjoyable! Atmosphere: elegant with beautiful views. Service: excellent. Food: excellent.

Yelp
The place was gorgeous and the gondola was very smooth and please come at the sunset time to take your best photos and Deirdre was the best and knowledgeable about wines. We loved our experience at sterling vineyard and would love to bring more friends in future!

Yelp
I've actually been coming to "Sterling Vineyards" dating back to around 2010 as I was introduced to one of their most popular offerings, "Malvasia Bianca". This is a sweeter wine but not overbearingly sweet like what you'd find in a Moscato but nonetheless, a great wine that pairs well with a sandwich, charcuterie board, or pizza. Going back to the winery itself, Sterling was founded in 1964 and has been one of the dominating vineyards producing thousands of barrels to ferment into amazing-tasting Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Merlot. The distinctively unique Mediterranean-style white stucco building was completed in 1971 and almost resembles something out of Greece. Over the years, it went through evolutionary changes and unfortunately, much of the vineyards was heavily damaged to the Napa Valley Glass Fire in 2020. However, they reopened in October 2023; bigger and better than before with an all-new Gondola that takes you to the main entrance to the actual tasting area. Located just north of Highway 29 and about a mile south of Silverado Trail Rd. just a few minutes east of the town of Calistoga, finding Sterling Vineyards is relatively easy. However, cell phone reception can be quite limited as it was a challenge all in itself getting internet here. I came here with my significant other during the afternoon of Saturday 4/6/2024 at around 2:00pm as it was a beautiful (but cool) spring afternoon. Parking is very easy to find as there were multiple spots for hundreds of vehicles. They also have a drop off area where shuttles and limousines can go. The information area is where you go to purchase tickets to the gondola that takes you to the actual tasting area. This area also has public restrooms for your convenience. I advise everyone who hasn't been here to pay the money and take the gondola! It is one of the most picturesque views of the Napa Valley and well worth every penny. Once at the tasting area, you are given several flights of their most popular wines as well as a commemorative glass to take home with you. All in all, "Sterling Vineyards" is as good as it gets when it comes to location, variety, lush landscaping, views, and award winning wines. They have standard hours of operation being opened for business 7 days a week (except for major holidays) from 10am-4:30pm. Service was amazing and the employees that work here take the time and effort to explain in full detail of what their winery is all about. My rating, a perfect five stars.

Yelp
This is a very unique winery. You get to take a gondola from the parking lot to the top of mountain, where the winery is located. Pictures are a must. Reservations recommended. Earlier you go, less crowded. Definitely opt for the terrace tasting, if you get a chance. The views are out of this world. 360 views of Napa; worth it. You also get a cheese place to go with your outdoor tasting. Our host was very friendly and informative. You get to even take home ur glass... nice commerative keepsake.

Yelp
I hate giving a one star review, I really do and I've been debating whether or not to even post this. I'll admit that Sterling was pretty high up on my winery bucket list. I've been anticipating the re-opening of the gondolas since the fire. My cousin was visiting from Canada over Christmas break and I was excited to take him here since it would be his first Napa Valley wine tasting experience. Unfortunately, we felt that we were treated unkindly and felt discriminated against. Scenario 1: At our first wine stop, there was a Caucasian family tasting ahead of us and they got their first pour and we waited patiently for our turn. After the family finished with their tasting they were still standing around and chatting with each other, however my cousin and I weren't even acknowledged and the two staff members didn't even look in our direction even though we had been standing there for a good 10 minutes. The father of the family had to even speak up for us and say to the staff, "Aren't you going to help them?". It was only then that one of the staff members poured us some wine without saying a word to us. It just felt so unwelcoming. We tried to shrug it off thinking maybe those two staff members were having a bad day or something until we got to the next stop... Scenario 2: At wine stop #2, the same family is ahead of us, and the exact same thing happens. After the family is done with their tasting, the staff members do not even want to look at us or say a word to us. The wife of the family stands up for us this time around and says to the staff, "Maybe you want to help them out?". The man working there just looks up at us and doesn't say anything and just pours us our glasses with no mention of the wines. It was kind of obvious at this point that they don't want POC at their winery. If that family wasn't there to stick up for us at the two wine stops, we'd probably still be standing there waiting to this day haha. I mean just the fact that it takes a 3rd party to even point it out to them that they need to acknowledge us is insane to me. It doesn't end there... Scenario 3: My friend joined us for wine tasting, but she arrived in a different gondola. When she went to wine stop #1, the lady working there rudely told her, she can't get a pour and that she has to go to the final wine stop. I had to interject and let her know that my friend hadn't even had her first wine glass of the visit. She was like, "Oh, well I thought she had already done the wine tasting?"...ummm she literally just got off the gondola and you saw her walk up, how can she have completed all the wine stops? It definitely felt like our presence wasn't wanted. I noticed that they only spoke kindly to the Caucasian guests. It was so unfortunate that they treat POC this way, especially when we just wanted to support their business. Aside from their poor treatment of us, their wine was just mediocre. The only nice people working there were their gondola staff members. Those guys should be the ones conversating with guests about wine.

Yelp
We visited Sterling Vineyards with the St. Helena Wine Passport, which included a self-guided wine tour and gondola ride. The check-in process was smooth, and parking was easy. Our 11:30 reservation was perfectly timed, with no long lines to deal with. The gondola ride was stunning, offering amazing views that set the tone for the experience. The self-guided tour was easy to navigate and featured more breathtaking views along the way. The wine tasting was excellent! It started and ended with whites, with three reds in between. Even though we're not big red wine fans, we found them surprisingly tasty. The last tasting in the gift shop was a great touch--we loved it so much we went home with a bottle. Highly recommend this unique and scenic experience!

Yelp
Great weather to for drinking wine on top of a hill. Well, if that's what you got, some on over to Sterling Vineyards. Parking: There is a fairly large parking lot on premise. Ambiance: It was a chill go match the beautiful day. Service: The service was great. (1)Your first stop- The checkin/ ticket desk. The great thing is that we had reservations that were already paid for, so it made everything super easy. (2) Gondola Ride Up- The views were incredible! A sight to see! (3) Check-In to your first tasting. You also get a souvineer glass. Shrek was our first pourer. He was super nice and knowledgeable. A great personality to start the self-guided tour. (4) Tour 3 additional delicious wines. I can tell you I didn't have a bad glass. Your fourth glass is served on an amazing rooftop, which gives you an up close and personal view of the amazing view. (5) For the Final wine (my fav) travel to the gift shop. It's more of a sweet wine, if that's your thing... But please know that the gift shop is amazing with a ton of great souvenirs. (6) Gondola Ride Back Down (7) Off to the parking lot! We had a great experience. It was a combination of great wine, beautiful views, educational information about wine, and amazing weather that kept us smiling!!! 10/10... will definitely recommend.

Yelp
Sterling vineyards is the place to go! If you want a fun and one of a kind experience, choose sterling vineyards. The gondola ride is such a fun touch and great start to the wine tasting. We went with the founder's room experience which had really tasty dishes that were packed with flavor, each pairing was very unique and the perfect serving. The wines were really nice and great for any occasion and paired just right with the food. The last dish isn't pictured because I forgot but that was my favorite! Steven was our server and he made our experience great and so did all of the other staff we interacted with. The environment and ambiance was really pretty, and up-kept. You also have a really nice view with scenery. I also like how they have wines available for every budget at the gift shop, I went home with the Savion blanc which is the first glass we received on the way to our table. Overall 10/10 and if you can only visit one winery in Napa, definitely choose sterling- you will love it!

Yelp
Honestly the best winery I've ever been too! The grounds were beautiful, there's a gondola, the sights were 360degrees and the wine was delicious! Not to mention they have truffle chips in the gift shop and if you have a Priority Wine Pass they offer 2 for 1 self guided tours/tastings. Being at this winery felt prestigious and immaculate!

Yelp
Our favorite winery ever!!!! What's better than a gondola ride, beautiful views and delicious wines! It's a self guided tour which was perfect for us because we like taking our time enjoying the views, each other's company and sipping our wine. At the end of the wine tasting there's a lot of places to chill and relax. I wish the service was better since there is a lot of customers I get why it's lacking but it becomes very robotic where we just get our wine poured and we move on. However nonetheless we loved it here! We can't wait to come back!

Yelp
We visited Sterling as our second winery of the day and did the "sterling stroll". It was a great way to split up the day and explore the winery at your leisure. Would recommend!

Yelp
I enjoyed the tram that takes you to the entrance of the building, and the wine was okay, but i didn't enjoy having to go from one station to the next, and then there was no where to sit either. One of the servers coughed all over our wine which wasnt great either. If you want to try something different try somewhere else.

Yelp
Touristy winery without feeling like a total tourist. There are different types of tours to choose from we did the sip and stroll but ended up doing the terrace last minute. Staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. In order to get to the winery you travel on the gondola ride which is about 3-4 minutes. You will receive your tasting glasses which you are able to take home. When we got to the terrace it was hot with minimal shade. Staff were trying to set up shaded areas but were worried about the wind. Otherwise, this winery was fabulous, a great and unique experience. Definitely a must if you're in the area!

Yelp
It's a wine experience, not really a winery visit. But is a pretty great experience! The gondola is very cool, the views are excellent, and it's kind of nice to have a taste-at-your-own pace tasting. The main issue is the wines, at least for the basic visit. In two previous visits, I've liked only 2/5 of the wines each time. Their cab sauv reserve has always been solid, but the rest is hit or miss. Also, the final tasting in the gift shop is very well-concealed, though the wine has been pretty disappointing each time. If you're looking to take non-wine people around Napa though, this is a good experience that provides unique views, a convivial (if sometimes quite crowded) atmosphere, and a laid-back pace.

Yelp
For $55 dollars you can take the gondola up and do your own paced tour and get 4 tastings. For those who don't drink you can get a goodie bag with snack and water. We enjoyed our time here

Yelp
Everything from the gondola to all the wine tastings were amazing. You hey amazing views throughout the vineyard and all staff is super friendly. Highly recommend to go the last 2-3 hours before they close as the sunset colors look amazing when taking photos.

Yelp
This was such a great first experience at a vineyard. Sterling Vineyards definitely checked off the "what makes us unique" box. From the Aerial Gondola, the breathtaking view at the top as you walk to your first tasting. Just such a great experience. We were fortunate to learn about the $75 passport prior to our visit that allows for wine tasting at 19 different venues, which was surely a steal! At Sterling, there were five different tastings with each person (pourer) being warm and welcoming. This gem is definitely a must visit

Yelp
I took my Wife here as part of our Wine Country Tour for her birthday. She absolutely loved it. The Sky gondola gave us some beautiful views . The Pinot Gris was our favorite. It's a self guided tour so you go at your own pace. Once we reached the Terrance we were attended to by Anna who mentioned she's new but was pretty knowledgeable and went and got answers whenever she wasn't 100% positive. We got to leave with some favors from the Sterling which we absolutely loved. This was our favorite Winery from our entire trip. Thank you for the experience
