Best Tinned Fish Restaurants in Austin | Eater Austin

"The East Austin butcher shop’s two-doors-down wine bar embraces the tinned fish-wine combination. Tinned fish — such as octopus or sardines — are paired with a charred half-lemon and green salsa. There are outdoor dine-in services." - Nadia Chaudhury

Seems to be under new ownership. Selection is about average for a smaller store. Pricing is reasonable although the allocated bottles are a little high.

Steve's Liquor Store on Exposition is my hands down favorite place to buy in this city, given the invariably friendly and useful attention of the staff. The manager is such a great guy who has become like a friend over the years. The owner must be a good person because he keeps his employees; I don't remember any turnover. Highly recommended!

Amazing customer service!!! I love showing up here everyday, Best place to come if you are feeling down. Guy behind the counter is super sweet and makes me feel at home. I look forward for the conversations we have everyday, makes my day so much better!!

I visit this store about once a month or so, and hands down it's one of the best places to go. The employees are always so friendly and helpful, and even remember me by name. They are even dog friendly, and keep treats for when a customer comes in with their pups, it's great!

Buyer beware on this one, their prices are not competitive by a long stretch. The beer we purchased (24 pk of Miller Light) was 13-14% higher than the nearby Total Wine (or Specs) and the bourbon we purchased was 33% higher. While it is my fault that I did not check the clearly posted price for the bourbon before purchasing, what I can't understand is their unwillingness to take the product back despite it being unopened and never having left the parking lot (after I'd discovered that I'd grossly over paid). This smacks of them acknowledging that they had pulled a fast one on a customer. The sales associate claimed state law prevented him from accepting the product, which is not true and made them look that much worse. He then let me know I could wait around for the manager if I wished to pursue the matter further which I was not in position to do. Given the service and the markedly higher prices, I can't recommend Steve's to anyone looking to re-stock the bar.

Terrible customer service - rude, arrogant, pretentious. I asked for their selection of Belgian beers & the proprietor said "Try 7-11..."! I have never reviewed a liquor store before, and I'm not sure what use it is given the nature of the clientele; but I must say, there are quite a few remarkably enjoyable stores to purchase alcohol from in Austin, with knowledgable, friendly customer service. I will never support this business with my patronage ever again and will eagerly inform everyone with whom I speak of how truly terrible of an experience I had here.

Google
Absolutely love this store. Every time I go in here the staff is so nice and always willing to help me. They always have what iam looking for and if they don't they always have a great substitute. will always be my go to place for sure.

Google
Always helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. Because it’s an independent store you can expect the prices to be slightly higher than Total Wine, Twins or Specs, but the customer service is night and day.

Yelp
Great little store. The guy that worked there was fast and friendly. Place was clean and organized. They can order things for you if you give them time to get it. Great place!

Yelp
This is right by my house, cannot beleive I just now stopped in. Plenty of parking. Was in and out in a flash, as they happened to have the baby bottles of Bailey's and Kaluha right behind the counter (that surprised me for such a small location.) Guy was pleasent enough, not so chatty as to slow me up. Solid first time experience. Not much to comment on however. I'm sure I will return and update from there.

Yelp
come on, it's May 11th 2020 and the store clerk/register guy is not wear a mask? I saw this and left. The white wine I wanted is not worth patronizing this establishment.

Yelp
Yesterday I woke up early and headed over to my friend's house to help paint a bedroom. It was going to be a fun day of painting and mimosas...however when I arrived at 9:30am I realized we only had OJ and no champagne. So I decided to run around the corner to Steve's. I must have looked like a serious addict...in my rush to get champagne, I totally forgot that you can't sell alcohol until after 10. So I sat in my car and waited it out for about 20 mins. When I went into the store, I was greeted by Health who was really friendly. Originally I was going to buy two bottles of Veuve Cliquot but upon entering realized that was stupid to ruin good champagne with OJ. Heath helped me pick out a French sparking for $12 bucks a bottle! The downside is that the store is small and they do not have a lot of variety. It's a quick and easy place to run into if you are in Tarrytown.

Yelp
The local shop with local, friendly and personalized service. They have tastings on Friday afternoons which is a great place to try new things and meet some neighbors. Really a terrific asset to the shopping center.

Yelp
I'm a regular, mostly because it's two blocks from my house. I've found the prices to be competitive, and I'm conversational with Sam, who runs the place most of the time. He is not the owner. The other clerks who work in his absence have always been friendly and helpful. Steve's is a small liquor store that is forced to operate under the rigid restrictions imposed on it by Jeanne Daniels, who owns Tarrytown Shopping Center. Google her for more details. She recently forced Steve's to remove all liquors that contained milk or cream, so if you're hankering for a Bailey's Irish Cream, then head south to Twin Liquors on Lake Austin Blvd. And if you want beer or mainstream wine, go to Randall's. But if you need a bottle of Jack Daniels or Tito's and you don't want to drive five or six miles to Spec's, then Steve's is as good a place as any to buy it.

Yelp
I did not enjoy my interaction with the extremely rude sales guy (who I am actually fairly certain is the owner). I had stopped in to quickly pick up some beer. I was "greeted" (if you can call it that) by the above mentioned gentleman at the door, looked up and down and then he sneered "can I help you?". I asked him where the beer cooler was and he directed me to the back of the store. He followed me back there where the following conversation took place: Him: (with a tone of utter disbelief): Are you looking for something? Me: Yes, I would like some Blue Moon. Him: (rudely and still sneering at me) Well, we don't have that. Me: Hmmm... Him: (still rude and sneering): Anything else you want? Me: Could you recommend a favorite wheat beer? Him: (as though he were speaking to an idiot toddler): Well, since all beer is made from wheat, anything in that cooler should do. Me: (my turn for disbelief) Umm, ok. How about a nice Hefeweizen? Him: Sighs loudly. That Paulaner is ok. Me: Fine. So I take the beer to the counter, at this point just wanting to get away from the obnoxious, sneering guy who is talking to me like I am the dumbest person he has ever come across. At the counter he says (keeping the sneer up): "I assume you have some sort of ID that you think you are going to be able use." I hand over my very valid, very over 21 ID. He looks at it says "oh, wow. You are older than you look." End of conversation and I leave. So at this point it seems pretty obvious that he was being rude and condescending because he was assuming I wasn't old enough to buy the beer I was asking about. This does not excuse his behavior. If he thought I was under 21 he could have legitimately asked to see my ID at any point while I was in the store. I would have happily handed it over, understanding that it is his license on the line here. But he did not choose this path. Instead, he elected to make snarky comments and be condescending. Not only that, but once he saw that I was of age, he did not apologize or issue any sort of correction for his behavior/rudeness. I will not be back to this place. If I want to be sneered at, I'll go to a snooty clothing boutique ;-)

Yelp
Pricey Bacardi Rum for no reason, and the clerks there were kind of into my *business* if you know what I mean (annoying)... I'll go back because of the close location, but there's definately better places in Austin.

Yelp
The surprisingly great customer service at Steve's Liquor is the reason I decided to join Yelp. The selection is smaller than Spec's or Twin Liquors but the location is much more convenient. I have always dreaded going into a liquor store, especially when I have to ask a question about a brand. Anyways, I found them to be so friendly, helpful, and won't hesitate to return when I need to pick up a bottle. First time I have ever purchased alcohol and experienced great customer service. Thanks Steve's.
