The Ultimate Guide to America's National Parks

"Florida is home to a whole lot more than just beaches and Disney World. The state is one of the worst hit by the foreclosure crisis that was considered a part of the recession of 2008-2009. The homes of Stiltsville date back long before those years, but, as abandoned construction projects, they bring the collapse of the housing market to mind. Head down to Biscayne Bay and look out into the sea. You’ll be able to clearly spot seven different buildings that are hovering above shallow waters having been built on wood or reinforced concrete pilings. This tiny neighborhood is known as Stiltsville and is part of Biscayne National Park. The structures are owned by the National Park Service, and managed by the Stiltsville Trust. “No one who chances upon the phenomenon of Stiltsville for the first time will ever forget the sight of homes that hover above the waters, miles from any shore, like structures from a dream,” the group’s website reads. The homes that are left were once part of a larger community-at-sea that comprised 27 structures at its peak, all located at least a mile from the shore. Eddie Walker started Stiltsville back in the 1920s or 1930s during the Age of Prohibition. The shacks - they were nothing more than that at the time - served as gambling and alcohol dens for individuals frustrated with state and national laws. Fires, hurricanes and too much partying all took their toll on the buildings, until just 7 are now left after 1992’s Hurricane Andrew. Access is by boat only, but docking at and visiting the structures is by permit only, available from the Stiltsville Trust." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

This Historic part of Miami is a must see. It is the northernmost part of Biscayne national park and gets the name Stiltsville from homes on pilings / stilts. This started as early as 1922.

It was a wonderful day going out on the National Parks Boat to visit these interesting little structures. Lots of history, very educational

You wouldn't expect to find historic houses in the middle of a 95% water national park but here Stiltsville is! Each house has a unique history that's fascinating to learn about. If you don't have a personal boat, the Biscayne National Park Institute has a few tours that'll take you close to several of the houses

It's honestly impressive seeing these homes still standing after all these years. One thing, though: don't try to go on your own vessel. DO NOT GO WITHOUT A CHARTER, or you won't be able to even go on them. And I don't recommend trespassing. You'd waste your time thinking you can just hop on one of these homes. I didn't go inside or anything, so I don't know how they are. Edit: solicit a PERMIT before going, or you might as well see stiltsville from land. It'll save you time and money in the long run. It's ridiculous, but it's true.

Beautiful landmark in the middle of the Bay. I visit this place several times a year as a charter and clients always are amazed at the structures and incredible view around. A must visit if in Miami.

You can see them from shoreline at Bill Brags State Park.

Interesting enough, these houses weren’t abandoned, they were taken away from the owners by, you guessed it, the government. Because people can’t live free and where they want in this country, like over the water in Biscayne Bay, the government swooped in and changed the boundaries of the national park so they could kick the owners of these beautiful structures out. Welcome to America, now bend over!

A really cool area to check out if you have access to a boat. It was really neat to see the houses that are still standing. We didn't really hang on in the area, we just passed through.
