St. John Is the U.S. Virgin Island You Can’t Just Sail Past Anymore | Vogue

"Opened in June 2024 by Chicago-born chef Vinny Alterio—trained at The Peninsula Chicago and having worked alongside Gordon Ramsay and Christina Tosi—this open-air spot in Cruz Bay serves shareable, globally inspired fare with a Caribbean twist, including spiced oxtail arancini, ceviche with roasted pineapple salsa and plantain tostones, and pan-seared lobster dumplings with ginger and sunflower shoots." - Siobhan Reid

Really the best restaurant on the island. The atmosphere was great, both relaxed and upscale at the same time. The food was all pretty delicious and were presented beautifully. We got the welcome plate, the tuna rose, the ragu and the chicken and dessert was the chocolate mousse! All were delicious. If I can leave 10% feedback (which is my way of saying, if there could be just 10% improvement) it would be that the bar seating needs a bit of air/fan (it got really hot and all the fans were pointed at the tables. We had a windless night so after a while it felt really stuffy). The chicken and tuna rose were on the saltier side. The chicken was cooked perfectly but some bites were very salty. Overall we loved it here and will be back on our next trip!

On a recent trip to St. John, we had several options for dinner one evening. On the recommendation of our innkeeper, we decided to give Speakeasy a go. So glad we did! Don’t be fooled by appearances… a couple of decorated shipping containers with a roof thrown up in between is what you see. Once there, however, you’ll find one of the best restaurants on St. John! We had a delightful dinner, sitting at the bar, waited on by a real character, who said her name was “Mary” that night. She was fantastic! Lots of locals there, regulars, always a good sign! Great view of the sunset from the entire place, and our seats at the bar. The drinks and food were both fantastic! Creative craft cocktails are the star! The menu is local, but chef-inspired infusions of incredible flavors. We shared ceviche, fresh catch and the truffled foie gras… all were simply delicious! Key lime pie to die for! We’ll definitely be back next time we visit the island! Highly recommend Speakeasy!

My grandma used to say that the best compliment you could give a chef was a clean plate. Well, our plates were so clean you didn't need a dish washer. Chef Vincent provided one of the best meals we had in the Caribbean and to make such extraordinary food in a small tight kitchen with a small group of cooks was beyond all expectations!!! Let's starts with the location. You enter a parking lot, we were convinced at first that we arrived to a wrong location. Then at the far corner we saw a bright spot of light and the unmistakable sound of happy people dining. We approached and were greeted by the lovely hostest. Our table was not ready so we ordered a bottle of sancerre wine and sat by the balcony. In front of us lay the bay, full with local music and restaurants. A nice gentleman escorted us to our table and told us about all the wonderful choices. We started with a green papaya salad and the tuna carpaccio. I figured that if a chef from Chicago could get it done right in the Caribbean everything would be nothing short of amazing. And it was!!! The tuna melted in your mouth while the green papaya salad provided the edge, delivering a spicy mouthful of freshness. For the main course we had the red snapper in green curry sauce. It was a jaw dropping dish. One of the best fish dishes we had in all of the Caribbean islands. But that wasn't the grand finale.... For dessert, I opted to try a fresh ceviche while my better half opted for the Grilled pineapple with ice-cream. I must admit that I was a complete fool. The ceviche was fresh and delicious but her desert was out of this world. At the end of the movie "the princess bride" they talked about the top most passionate four kisses. So if sweets are your love language, this desert belongs to the four best deserts you'll ever have. Five stars in not enough. 🙏

okay WOW!! we were so excited to eat here and weren’t totally sure what to expect, but were so blown away. the pacing of courses, service and knowledge from AC, and the presentation from the chefs was amazing. i’ve eaten at some great places and this is definitely competing with my #1 spot. as much as id love to keep this place a secret, it really should be a staple restaurant for anyone in stj.

This was a beautiful, cozy experience. I sat at the bar (for one) and Kim the bartender was very attentive and knowledgeable. I got the tasting menu and was very specific about my dietary restrictions (pescatarian, no red meat, no shellfish). Each of the five courses was a menu item, beautifully plated, exquisitely delicious, and so tasty I would take a bite and just sit in wonder over how delicious it was. The music was not so loud that people had to shout to be heard. It was an entirely wonderful experience. Chef Vinny even walks the plates out to each table himself, talking with each guest and explaining the food. He asked me personally about my tastes in dessert and brought me the most amazing strawberry sorbet.

The best food you will eat in St. John! We came two nights on our stay and didn’t have a single complaint! So fresh and flavorful! Text to make a reservation and don’t waste your time trying to eat anywhere else!

The best dinner on the island! Chef Vincent has worked in some of the most impressive places and has brought his knowledge to island cuisine!! His specialtiy drinks are the bomb diggiety as well! Great wine list! For the island that means a lot! ! Above and beyond. He has a fantastic staff who works hard to bring all his ideas front and center!! Don’t miss out!

I’ve been to STJ maybe 10 times and STJ Speakeasy is currently one of the best restaurants on island. The corn and coconut bisque and duck tortellini are two of the best dishes I had on my three-week trip to STJ. The whole menu is fun, fresh, interesting, and creative - with lots to choose from. It’s impressive how much good food this restaurant turns out from such a small kitchen (which is basically a repurposed shipping container). Service is friendly and efficient. Vibes are super cute. They’ve done a great job converting a space in a parking lot into a charming little nook for delicious food. You completely forget where you are.

Yelp
STJ has been needing this place for a long time . This restaurant had only been open for just over a year but this establishment is legit. Everything we ordered was great...appetizers, entrees, and deserts. My only gripe was the fish entree portion was a little light but that won't stop us from going back. The service was excellent. Sunset at dinner was a nice touch. You should make a reservation and go here.

Yelp
I have been coming to the island for years. Easily the best meal and cocktail on island! Almost missed this gem because it wasn't on yelp yet.
