I've driven past The Stockton Inn for...literally...decades, and always wanted to try the place, so when my SO asked where I would like to go for my birthday dinner, this is the place that I selected, and I am happy to say that I made a good decision.
The staffers were all friendly and solicitous, from the cheery hostess, to the busboy, to our terrific waitress, Sam. The décor--especially for a history nut like me--was warm and inviting. And, then there was the food, which I would have to place in the category of one of the 2 or 3 best meals that I've ever had.
We both had Cream of Broccoli soup and it was excellent. Another restaurant whose Cream of Broccoli soup I reviewed a few months ago (hint: It's located in Clinton) could take a huge lesson from the Stockton Inn's chef regarding how to properly prepare Cream of Broccoli soup! The soup was served with a Parmesan Crisp, which accented the soup nicely, and we also received house-made biscuits which were very good.
The salmon--a VERY thick hunk of fish--was cooked perfectly, with the exterior being slightly browned in order to bring out the flavor, but with the interior being just a tad undercooked (the way that I like it) in order to preserve its moistness. Without question, this was one of the best fish dishes that I have ever eaten.
Accompanying the salmon was a cake of potato hash, which was also very pleasant, and a small mound of lightly sautéed Swiss Chard. Again, excellent, all-around.
We shared a chocolate tart with raspberry sorbet for dessert, and this dish was also very good. The only disappointment was the coffee, which wasn't bad, but certainly did not rise to the category of "good". Without question, the coffee should have been stronger.
All-in-all, we had a very pleasant evening, and our server, Sam, helped to make it very special.
We will be returning, probably for my SO's birthday in a few months.
