016 Restaurant impressed a critic - Eater Chicago

"Stolp Island Social caters to pre-theater crowds with exceptionally meaty twice-fried chicken wings in a sweet-tart honey-lemon sauce with smoked chiles. The steaks are good, but highlights include roasted branzino with brown butter and caper sauce and a bone-in pork chop loaded with flavor. Desserts include a chocolate velvet cake that is airy in texture but dense in flavor." - Jeffy Mai

Really wanted to like this place. After the poor food experience, as well as STILL not having an email back from the owner as she promised over 1 week ago... here I am. We ate Sun June 4th a 2. The atmosphere and decor were nice and unique. The food presentation was nice. Our waitress did a good job. I included the pics I took bc I love photography and enjoy sharing for Google. However, we didn't come to just take photos, we came to EAT. We were expecting phenomenal steaks for the pricing. Instead, what we got were extra salty tasting steaks & potatoes that lacked flavor. We had salad, olives, brussel sprouts & water with lemon.  All 3 of us ended up getting sick an hour to 90 min after eating here. We did let the server know the steaks were very salty and she offered to replace, but with my MIL having to get back to get her flight, we didn't have much time. Since we all 3 got sick after, we feel our sickness was more than likely from staph food posioning (a form of food poisoning than can happen 30 min after being exposed to the toxin). Only 1 other party of 2 people was there and just finishing eating. Not one other person came in the whole time we were there. Probably not a good sign. We did see the cook leave and go to the bathroom after our salads were served. We are hoping it wasn't from that :/ We called and spoke to the manager & owner... The owner said this hasn't happened in her 40 years of doing this and tried to come up with other reasons we got sick. I explained IF you get staph by something being mishandled, cooking won't kill the toxins. The bacteria may be killed, but the toxins are not destroyed and can still spread and make you sick. It wont make the taste any different or the smell any different. The owner was confident it wasn't food poisoning until I mentioned staph and the facts. If this really is the first time this happened in 40 years then Id think the owner would simply say I'm sorry it happened at our restaurant." Please allow a refund or partial or anything else besides excuses and telling me to watch for an email, only to not. We were offered the chance to come back but we are reluctant after the experience and didn't trust it for obvious reasons. In the future, I wouldn't ever let this much time go by before getting back to a customer. Not to mention, they had my phone number and could have followed up in that form also. Too late now. Sunday will be 2 weeks since our visit & 8 days since our phone convo. It shouldn't have taken this long. We feel forgotten. I really hope everything gets resolved and they can get things pinpointed to make sure this doesn't happen for anyone else. Please enjoy the photos. I do hope if you try it out, your experience is worth it. We are now on a search for a stellar steak place!

Outstanding service, delicious food, and refreshing boutique atmosphere. Perfect place to celebrate our anniversary. Always appreciate a restaurant that truly knows how to cook a steak too! We will definitely be back! A+

Such a wonderful dining experience! The service was impeccable. Great cocktails with a well curated wine list. Standouts were the fresh burrata appetizer and battered whitefish entree. Stolp Island Social is a lovely spot for a nice dinner in the heart of downtown Aurora. Will definitely be going back!

This is an amazing new restaurant! Have been waiting to try it out. The food was absolutely divine! I love crab cakes and try them any time anyone is brave enough to put them on the menu in the Midwest. Delicious! And the steak! I have not had such a melt in your mouth filet for years. I highly recommend and they nailed the medium rare beautifully. This is an excellent fine dining option in downtown Aurora. Thank you!

Had reservations for 4pm before the 5:30pm Paramount show. My dinner date, an 81yo with recent knee surgery, couldn't sit comfortably in the soft low chair-- we asked to be re-seated and the hostess didn't hide her annoyance. (I had talked to the restaurant the previous day and mentioned mobility issues.) However, the food was outstanding, the cocktails were fabulous, and our waitress Katie was wonderful. Best steak I've had in ages, will definitely go back.

I got a dry aged Tomahawk and ordered it medium rare… it came out pretty over cooked so that was a bummer, thank goodness they had A1 sauce. 😐 Other then that I enjoyed my experience and had a tremendous time. The deviled eggs ere so yummy and the decor is captivating. Oh, 1/2 off bottled wines on Tuesday’s.

Well let me say I'm impressed that Aurora has a good steakhouse in the downtown area. Been wanted to come here since I have seen it open. I was impressed. I ordered the dry age new york strip and my girlfriend got the filet mignon. It came out cooked perfectly medium rare. Was not fond of the mash potatoes, think they needed some love from butter and milk and smashed more. Drinks were a bit over priced for the serving I feel like they were good drinks but at 8 ounces or less didn't seem like price was fare at $15. Drinks were strong and good. Jerked chicken wings were good but that mango habenero sauce is out of this world. We did the raspberry chocolate cake and it was really good. Overall $250 with tip for 2 people not bad for quality food but work on bringing the drink price down.

Stolp Island Social is a great place for dinner and dessert in downtown Aurora. Our server, Mark, and especially our waitress, Anna, were amazing, and I could say the same for the food. I ordered the pork, and the meat was nice and juicy. Pairing it with the honeycrisp apple was a joy as it tasted unique and fresh. The dish redefined for me what one can do with pork. Dessert was vanillia ice cream with some amazing chocolate syrup. I also had the Baby Mule non-alcoholic cocktail, and that was very good as well. Another striking thing to note about this restaurant is the atmosphere. The theater and arts are a big part of this restaurant, being situated right next to Paramount Theater. Various quotes line the walls and ceiling, and the place has a semi formal artsy style to it. I will definitely be back many times here to try the other dishes. This is a beautiful hidden gem in downtown Aurora, and I encourage you to come and try it!
