The Best Cider in Philly | Eater Philly

"Make the drive to Ambler to visit the tasting room of the award-winning Stone and Key Cellars and Cidery. With nearly a dozen ciders on tap, you can sample a few when you order one of their cider flights or take a full growler home to share with friends." - George Banks-Weston

I only stopped in to grab some wines and ciders, but the restaurant looked really beautiful. I would definitely like to go there for a wine tasting and some light snacks. Stone and Key Cellars will be my go to for local wines in the future. The staff was also very friendly. I grabbed their cherry wine which was a delicious slightly sweet tart cherry wine. I grabbed their orange muscat iced wine which was really sweet and also delicious. Not pictured is their apple cider iced wine which was also really sweet and tasted like a nice fall crisp apple. Their ciders are also to die for. They have very unique flavors and were a hit at my wedding.

Google
Great variety in ciders and wine and even beer. Super nice staff. We forgot items twice and the one time the bartender even called the restaurant we went to after telling her we were going there after so we could come back to get it. Great service

Google
This place needs more 5 star reviews. Most importantly, the wine here is insanely good. Such a nice variety of dry reds and whites, but also a great selection of ciders and “sweet wines”! Kelly was such a wonderful host. The flights are $10 and very much worth the price. The atmosphere inside the ambler location was just the right amount of chill - cannot recommend enough!

Google
Amazing! My fiance and I stopped in for only a drink or two, but ended up staying much longer. The staff's wine recommendations were fantastic and everyone was so friendly.

Bill Malik

Google
Great spot to grab a glass of wine and the most extensive cider selection I've ever seen. Our host Kyle made us feel right at home and was quick and friendly.

Google
Great local, Ambler spot. Wines are solid and flights are reasonably priced. Small plates are available.

Came for Music Bingo, had a great time. Devon killed it, his energy is through the roof. He makes it worth coming back again.

Google
We went on a Friday night at 7 and they didn't have any food. But their wines are always great

Yelp
Random stop in with a friend as we strolled the streets of Ambler. They have a bring your own food policy but we were just here for tastings. It was spacious and bright. It was a fun ambiance and the woman behind the counter was helpful to everyone and social. Made our experience so much fun guiding us based on what we said we typically enjoyed. As you can see bottles went home!

Yelp
The best time at Stone & Key Cellars. My friends wanted a girls day out and the team here welcomed us with opened arms. Felt like we had been here before. We'll definitely be back soon.

Yelp
Terrific place to chill or play games. I love Music Bingo night. Staff is super friendly and really get to know you. It was improved 100 fold in the last few months. Love the slushees.

Yelp
My friend and I LOVE Stone & Key and we're so happy to see another location open that we could take the train to! Then wines and ciders are so delicious and there's something for everyone (we're fans of dry reds). Only knocking 1 star because there aren't very many food options and the hours are a bit odd. I gotta come back to get another 4 pack of ciders though! Friendly staff and great drinks, we really enjoy ourselves here.

Yelp
Went pre-Covid for a chocolate/wine tasting with 3 companions, and we had a great time. Recently went on a Sunday afternoon for a 30th birthday. This place is super relaxed and completely lacking in pretentions. We enjoyed wines, beers, ciders, and some surprisingly (especially for a tasting room) yummy food offerings. Good prices, good music, good food. Can't wait to come back on a Friday for trivia.

Yelp
Stopped by for some drinks, and to take a look next door at the brewing supplies. They sell plenty of wines, ciders, and meads here, and of course, they have these on tap to taste, as well as two featured beers. You can get a flight of four for $5 (of wine and/or cider) which is such a great deal. The ciders were very tasty, we tried the Wild [Blood] Orange and the Vino Cider Rose- the first was semi sweet, and the second was dry. They were both very refreshing and flavorful. We also tried the Obsidian (the maker's favorite) which was unique, and the Old Vine Zin, which was also pretty good. Service was very informative and friendly. You can mix ciders and wines in the flight, but you cannot mix either of those two with the meads. We opted not to taste any meads today. They also have events throughout the month, which are posted on the wall. Your best bet is to reserve a spot ahead of time. Some of the events are free, such as bingo night and trivia, while some may have a price (wine and cheese making class). Overall, great little place. My only complaint is there is a very limited supply of beer to taste. We'll probably be back sometime once they've got new things to taste on tap.

Yelp
Totally under rated ! Walked in and welcomed by a nice gentleman. We did the tasting , yummy dry wine ! The cab was just released and grapes from CA- very tasty ! Live music and a beer tasting event in back. Would recommend & can't wait to go back !!

Yelp
This hidden gem in Montgoneryville is becoming more polished with every barrel they produce. They are only entering their 4th or 5th year of production and just keep getting better. I visited a few years ago and tasted many of their wines and left feeling that it was just an average PA winery. I have recently revisited Stone & Key and tasted just about everything they offer and now believe that they are producing some absolutely amazing wines & ciders. I just can't tell you how impressed I am with their products, its amazing how for they have come on a few short years. If you like fine wine and live near Montgomeryville you must stop in for a tasting asap! You will definitely find some wines you will live and most likely will have a challenge deciding which is your favorite. I am in the process of making a barrel with a group and we had to do several tastings to choose. We ended up making a barrel of Syrah , it is really an excellent wine and well worth waiting until this summer to enjoy it. If you don't live close they have many events and you are certain to find a reason to visit!

Yelp
We had a blast a Stone & Key Cellars. I went there with a group of girl friends and it was a great atmosphere for the occasion. The service was great, super friendly and informative. We started with wine flight samples (4 for $5) and then ordered two bottles of wine based on our favorite samples. It all was extremely affordable. Also, I love sweet/fruity wine, and they had 5 different kinds that were all AMAZING. I would definitely recommend stopping here for a free weekend!

Yelp
What a truly disappointing experience. Brought my date here expecting big things. There's zero atmosphere, no ambiance. Concrete floors, heavy metal chairs, drinking out of plastic cups, music from a speaker in the corner of the garage. Yes, this is a converted garage... they use barrels for tables, which look cool but aren't functional at all - the tops are too small, and the center of the barrel forced you to lean way in to eat/drink. The wines all tasted like nail polish remover, nothing like the descriptions in their pamphlets. And the appetizers... were awful. Delivered covered in Saran Wrap?! Soggy pita bread and oxidized veggies... how old was this stuff?! Just horrible.

Yelp
Set back from what was the old route 202 and sharing a building with a place that sells material for Home brewers is this wonderful winery. Run by a mostly youngish staff who really enjoy what they do and want you to enjoy it as well, In the tasting rooms you can get their various vines by the bottle, glass or pint and if you're not sure they can set up a tasting for you to try different flavors. The wines are very nice and they seem to be designed to make wines that are drinkable rather than fashionable-by that i mean their Gwertrammer and Rieslings, Yes I've made a mess of that spelling -are just slightly sweet, made in the European style, rather than the syrups that come out of the west coast. The Sauvignon blanc has a nicely distinctive style from Chardonnay and so on. Particularly good are their Keye series which mix fruit and wines. These are not for table wines but to be drunk like a cocktail and wonderful on a warm afternoon. The Green Apple Riesling is their signature flavor but the others are fun too. The place also stands out for it's ciders, my fav' is the Cherry Pie which sounds sweet but is really tart and can be bought by the growler if you want to take it home. As for the site itself, there is a nice bar set up and tables but they do not serve food usually, you're welcome to bring it in. the big draw are Friday evenings while they alternate live music on the 1st and 3rd Fridays or the month and themed trivia contests on the 2nd and 4th with good natured jeering form the regulars. So for a nice friendly place not caught up in pretension but eager to show you what they've got, give this a try.

Yelp
So from the street you cant really tell this place is a winery. My boyfriend thought we were at the wrong place! Immediately through the front doors you walk into a store where they sell all kinds of supplies you would need to brew your own beer and wine which is neat. Theres a sign towards the back of the store that directs you to the winery part. Walking back it was a bit dark but Id consider it a nice ambiance for an evening. We went right to the bar and ordered a flight of wine each. I have be honest, I did not find any of my wines to be enjoyable. I started the flight with a rose. It had a very strong oak taste that was overpowering and was a bit perfume-y? (Pardon my spelling, not even sure if thats a word!). The spicy plum cider was a part of my flight and was too carbonated and very bitter- it had a bite to it that I did not find enjoyable. When ordering a cider I expect either no carbonation or very little and it needs to be sweet! Next on the flight was a Riesling which I was anticipating it to be sweet, like rieslings usually are, but was disappointed when it tasted again very bitter and had a strong floral aroma. The last wine on my flight was a cabernet sauvignon, which I did not enjoy either. It was again bitter and had a strong perfumed taste. We decided to stay for the live music which was nice. The womans name was Christine Havrilla (pardon if i spelled it wrong), she was great. During the music I steered away from wine and got the Neshaminy creek IPA which was really good! I ended up drinking 3 of them! It was a perfect balance of hops and citrus, very enjoyable. My boyfriend liked the Orange Muscat Iced Wine. He decided to get a bottle of it, and was very shocked when he was told his total was $43! The bottle is only 375ml, which is very small! Thats too much money for that little of wine. Out of all the wineries Ive been to, this one was my least favorite. Im not sure if Ill return.

Yelp
Went here for a bday celebration and we had a great time. The woman working was helpful and friendly and the atmosphere was fun. Will definitely return.

Yelp
Ok wine, wasn't what I was expecting. Friendly staff. It's more of a wine bar to go and hang out and watch a sports game. They have some unique flavor wines. Not your typical winery.

Yelp
My family has been part of a Wine group that has worked with Stone/Key for the last 5 yrs. They have procured grapes from Washington & CA and worked with us to produce very nice wines. We participate in the crushing & hold group meetings to taste, bring food and decide on the final blends. Then after aging, we do the bottling, labeling and get to enjoy the fruits of our work over the next years with great memories of those social gatherings. They are great to work with and Matt Check is incredibly knowledgeable guiding our decisions. The multiple tastings result in a very solid bottle that we proudly serve friends/family at home or gift away. Past wines have included Cab Sauv, Merlot, Sangiovese, Carmenere, Petit Verdot & Montepulciano. We've been increasing each year the number of barrels we buy and the average cost per bottle is mid teens, well worth it for the wine quality and fun we've had. They also hold Trivia & Bingo on Fri nites and these are a blast - go with friends, you'll be glad you did!

Yelp
We stopped in yesterday after work with a Groupon for 2 tasting flights, you get to pick 4 of the wines to taste. They also have ciders they make to sample as well. Local beers from breweries like 10/7 are also available. We brought some snacks to munch on, but they have local cheeses you can buy. I tried a glass of wine off the reserve list, the Obsidian. I have to say hands down this was one of the best wines I have ever had(and I have had a lot :) ) The pepper notes are out of this world. They have trivia nights and other gatherings, would highly recommend you check out this little gem.

Yelp
Wanted to try a new place outside the normal areas of South Jersey and Chaddsford, so we landed upon Stone & Key. It's located in a garage-type warehouse, with a very clean seating area that looks at all of their wine barrels. When we walked in on a weekend day, it was completely empty, which took me off guard. However, we didn't drive 50 minutes to be scared off by an empty winery. We each tried about 8 different wines, which all ranged from okay to pretty good. They get the grapes from all over and make everything in house. You can bring your own food, which is always nice! I'm not sure if I'll drive back out there without an event going on. It was definitely decent wines, but there wasn't much of a "scene."

Yelp
This place has a little bit of everything: wine, cider, and mead. It's definitely worth the drive/ride from Philly. The ciders were superb. There was a great variety of flavors (one that imitated a Dark and Stormy cocktail via aging in rum barrels with limes and ginger was particularly interesting) and even the simplest ones had a clear, non-artificial apple presence. I know that some people prefer delicate flavors in their ciders, but I really liked that each of these was more full-flavored. They sell growlers to go too. I'm not a wine or mead fan, but the ones I tasted were interesting at the very least and there was a pretty large variety. A few beers were also on tap. Prices were excellent for the tastings and glasses. They do have cheese, meats, and crackers for purchase there, but seemed fine with ordering or bringing more food in. Not many people were around on a weekday at lunch, but we were told it seems to pick up in business after work hours and on weekends. Bartender was very friendly and knew the menu quite well despite being a new employee. The whole facility is really cool (barrels and foeders abound) and it seems like they have a decent number of events going on. Would love to go back and will keep an eye out for their products at farmers' markets and in the city.

Yelp
I really enjoyed their blood orange cider that the chestnut brewery had in tap. I stopped up at the cellars on a Friday after work and it was nice. Directly off a main road so not what i usually expect but it seemed private enough. A bit dark inside with little to no windows they had a trivia night after to start. Probably would return unless I lived much more locally.

Yelp
Last night I had a surprise birthday party at Stone & Key Cellars for my husband's 60th birthday & it was excellent. The rustic, down to earth ambiance was so charming & perfect for our intimate 25 person guest list. The wine selections, beer, & cider were delicious. Steve the manager & Michelle were outstanding with assisting with all our needs and very knowledgeable about the winery & the various selections. We were able to bring in our own food and the set-up was perfect.

Anthony P.

Yelp
Great wines and very friendly staff with a decent inside atmosphere. It's not the typical (on the vineyard) scene but they offer wines made from CA and WA grapes which make for better wines.

Yelp
To say a I have a drinking problem is rude and you don't say that to a lady. A young lady at that. Now to say I have a fine appreciation for good wine then that is different and I would say " why yes thank you". This weekends voyage was for all libations to ensure I am well stocked whilst being on house arrest for the pope's visit. All I am saying is yes the pope may be here but I won't notice as my bunker is well stocked!. I love the fabulous staff here who are nothing short of excellent. The wine, well I could tell you all day in my "I love wine" words but it's much better you get your good looking shape on down here and try it alllllllllll yourself. You won't regret it. In fact you may send me hate mail after you and your family and friends, all try this place and are turned out (in a good way of course). You are most welcome in advance. Sincerely, The Wise Wino

Yelp
A somewhat hidden gem of a tasting locale. Lovely visit we had! Thank you!

Yelp
We had a great time trying the wines and the ciders here! Nick was our bartender and he did a great job! Very knowledgeable and attentive! We loved the lime and cherry cider especially and we can't wait to come back!

Yelp
We came up from Virginia for our anniversary and decided to hit some Pa winery's and I honestly didn't try one thing here that wasn't good. Friendly environment and the meads were great as well. Definitely recommend

George B.

Yelp
Website misleading/lacking basic info. Wines listed on website are NOT the ones they have to taste. A "flight" is $5 - which consists of 4 generous pours. Wines were so-so. Severely understaffed.

Ashton D.

Yelp
They have an amazing beer store! But I wouldn't personally come back for a wine tasting. Although fairly priced, the person giving us the wine tasting could care less and it really doesn't seem like the right environment for a wine tasting. The selection was pretty good. And some of the employees were nice. Maybe I just came at the wrong time for a wine tasting..? Not sure.

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Not only is the idea a brilliant one but the wines are fantastic! I have been fortunate enough to taste most of the selections. The Riesling and Gewurtztraminer are delightful. The Sauvignon Blanc crisp and delicious. The Chardonnay isn't overly oaky. And the Pinot Grigio far exceeded my expectations. As for the Reds: old vine Zinfandel isn't over loaded with green pepper but has a nice spicy finish. The Bordeaux and Rhone blends are both solid wines. And the Merlot is awesome. Do yourself a favor and go taste these wines!

Dana V.

Yelp
Wonderful atmosphere. Great vibe. Very lax, welcoming and friendly. Selection of wines is impeccable. Cider choices give a good variety and are each delicious. The fruity wines are a perfect sangria substitute for summer get togethers!

Yelp
Had a good experience here. My sister and I did a complimentary tasting. We were able to taste 4 wines and she gave us a bonus one because she forgot to mention it during her presentation. Wine was good, we walked out with 4 bottles and spent 42.00. That's pretty darn good. Try the green apple Riesling. Staff were nice and knowledgeable. You can also make your own wine here if you make reservations. However, I only knew about this from browsing the website. They didn't really advertise this during their presentation.

Yelp
I first tried their wine at a Wine festival. I fell in love with their Blueberry Pinot Noir. So one day while we were around the area we stopped in. The building is a little confusing, it doesn't look like a winery. They had an event going on with a moon bounce and a food truck. We did the wine tasting and stayed for a few hours. Overall we loved almost everything we tried. The staff were very helpful when suggesting wines. My favorite right now is the Green Apple Riesling.

Kristen M.

Yelp
Took a wine appreciation class with Matt and to say my expectations were surpassed is an understatement. It is hard to find a good red in PA and Stone & Key Cellars was so beautifully crafted that I left with 6 bottles! This place is a gem if you are looking for wine fights to expand your pallet, to learn the process and make your own wine, or just to spend a fun night!
