If you are looking for good food, solid service, and wonderful atmosphere that is homey and comfortable (and which feels utterly authentic, not contrived-to-look-homey-but-is-like-every-other-shop-out-there), I strongly recommend the Stone Mountain Public House on Main Street in Stone Mountain. The food is excellent, they have a solid gluten-free menu, the dessert crepes are to die for, and the margaritas yummy. People sit having comfortable conversation. The ambience is quiet -- it isn't loud and jangly. They get the music right -- anything from 20s jazz, 30s big band, 40s swing (soft), to a little modern something or other that I am too much of an old fart to identify :) People seem to know each other, and there is very much the vibe of a genuine local pub crossed with a good, healthy, sustainable restaurant. It's offbeat in a seriously good vibes way, and I loved it. My friend and I have eaten there three times, and we will be back!!! Not only that, but I am not the type to go out by myself, not because I think that that is wrong, but because it is hard to pry myself out of the house, I love hanging out with the dogs, and I am cheapcheapcheap besides. But this is the sort of place I can go to with a laptop when the house is too claustrophobic even for me!
Here's an example of how far they will go to make sure everything is right. The first time we were there, everything was perfect. The second time, the waitress made a caffeinated latte instead of a decaf that my friend Tammy ordered, and so they gave her the decaf on the house (and let me drink the caffeinated one, also on the house). But last night was the ultimate in stellar good service combined with making something right that was nobody's fault to start with.
My friend Tammy and I went there last night. She just had surgery and still can only wear loose clothing, and was down to her Eeyore PJs. In solidarity, I wore my Snuffalupagus slippers, and people thought it was fun. It is that kind of place. However, there was a problem with Tammy's order -- they were out of gluten free crepes, something that wouldn't have been seen until the order came up. She ordered something else when my order came out, and we waited.
However, the wait stretched out, and the server was very concerned. She alerted Amy, the owner's niece, and (we were told) asked if anything could be comped to make up for what was happening.
Amy came over and made SURE Tammy had something gluten free, and was able to list every dish that was (and was not). The chef came out and offered to make her something off-menu if nothing on the menu worked; he apologized that it took him so long to realize that there were no more GF crepes (plus the poor server had been on a *long* shift and had forgotten that the savory crepe Tammy had ordered came with a sauce that was integral to the dish but could not be made in-house and GF; she had advised a different crepe but had forgotten to say why; no shade on her--I couldn't do her job with half her good humor, patience, and grace!).
Tammy chose the salad, and the chef made a huge, double size salad for her. It was so big it was two meals, and they boxed the rest for her and gave her two extra vinaigrette dressings. Not only that, they comped the entire meal, including her coffee, even though there was nothing wrong with any of the food that eventually came. The only cost was my dessert crepe and coffee, which was entirely fine with me, as there had been nothing wrong with any of it, and I had had no problems.
Now THAT is service. So if you are in Stone Mountain, or want a relaxing dinner, or are eating alone and want a nook to sit in and read (they have a huge selection of books on the Free Library basis!) or just want a unique, non-chain, local experience, then the Stone Mountain Public House is for you.
