I've had this place bookmarked for quite a while, so when my friend suggested lunch here, I jumped on it. It was a late lunch, so there wasn't that many people there. We sat in a booth near the bar. We both wanted a cocktail, so I went with a ginger lychee martini, and she decided on the Last Word, which was full of a bunch of ingredients I was not familiar with, nor could the waiter describe it for us. Well, she tried it and about choked. She said it tasted like cough medicine, and I tried a sip and agreed. It was awful. My lychee martini was also not very good. I had expected more of a lychee taste, but it was heavy on ginger, and no lychee flavor. They threw a couple lychee fragments of fruit in there, and I guess that was the lychee part. I drank it, but wouldn't consider ordering it again. My friend, after trying my drink, decided on prosecco to be safe.
For lunch, we decided to get a bunch of appetizers along with some fish tacos. The appetizers were hit or miss for me. We had the black bean hummus, which was odd tasting. It tasted good at first, but then there was this acidic component to it I could not place my finger on what it was, but I felt like it was maybe a bit old, and some ingredient in there had broken down and become a bit spoiled. I wasn't sure. I am not a huge fan of bacon, but she had ordered the bacon deviled eggs. There were strips of bacon underneath the eggs, and she said it really didn't taste like bacon, so I tried one. But I felt like all I tasted was bacon, and the consistency was very pasty, not creamy. It was not good. The single crabcake also was a miss for me. It was heavily breaded and fried, and all I could taste was breading, with very little crabmeat. The accompanying sauce was also a bit on the sweet side, and I expected more a tartar-type sauce to go with it.
So, for better news, the fruit and cheese platter was great. It had candied pecans, pistachios, dried apricots, grapes, and three cheeses with some small crusty olive oiled bread pieces. The only cheese I didn't care for was the cheddar variety, but that's just a personal choice. I like the harder and more fragrant cheeses.
And lastly, my favorite of the lunch, was the fish tacos. These were outstanding. Literally some of the best fish tacos I have ever had. The fish was seasoned perfectly, not overcooked and rubbery at all, and served with jicama, pickled onions, cilanto. And I had to ask (there is additional charge for this) for a side of chipotle mayo. That made the taco. They should serve with it standard, because it took the tacos to another level. Absolutely great!
I'd come back here for sure. I know I would avoid the cocktails and stick with wine. I would definitely come just for the tacos again. Give them a try if you come here.
