Employees at Stop & Shop and Walmart Strike Due to Low Wages and Overwork | Eater

"On April 11, more than 31,000 grocery workers at roughly 240 regional locations walked out under the United Food and Commercial Workers to protest management proposals that would raise employee health-care costs, reduce pension contributions for many part-time workers, eliminate premium holiday pay and freeze raises. Management framed the cuts as necessary to stay competitive even though the parent company reported about $2 billion in profits the prior year. The action became the chain’s longest strike (lasting ten days) and had immediate commercial impact — store visits fell by about 75% the first weekend — underscoring broad shopper solidarity and demonstrating that labor disputes can sharply disrupt operations and public trust." - Jaya Saxena

Google
Exclusive stomping ground for sourcing all groceries, and fresh produce. Naturally, we don't have to look any further; with good reason. It's not just that the store is well stocked with all essentials, peripherals and occasionals (more about that in a bit), but is also neat & clean, with a daylight bright cheery vibe. Even before "Marty" made his moves, shelves were well stocked, and we've been there at opening (6:00 am), peak, or closing (just shy of midnight). Of course, "Marty" has made an uptick in inventory availability. It's not just in-store restocking, but also vendor managed inventory that'stop notch. What stands out: * Seasonally appropriate end-aisle stocks * OTC medication and nutrition supplementa. * Small batches of fruit and veggie salads they manage in vertical merchandizing cases., despite rapid turnover. * Astounding selection of pickled olives, cheeses, dips * Regular and organic produce, * Nuts, granola mixes and dried fruits in right-sized packing. * Dairy and non dairy products. * Expanding pet section includes food, treat, supplies. * Entire display classification is easy-to-locate and shopper friendly. On the few occasions we've had need to ask the restocking team about something, they've dropped the task at hand to help us home onto the right shelf. * Perinnially relevant flowers, plants, balloons, greeting cards to facilitate social felicitation-care-concern (pic, their florists have made many a day for us). * Widest selection of ales, American lagers, beers, hefeweizens, IPAs, Lagers, porters, stouts, flavored beverages (pic). * On prem Starbucks (pic) for those who want a caffeine fix. With 470+ free parking spaces; 14 self-checkouts and another 14 manned cash registers, there's hardly any occasion for bottlenecks. What could be better: washroom maintenance for those who might have an in-shopping emergency (to be fair, patrons are the problem here, not upkeep). Overall, the store has such a welcoming vibe, that we prefer to walk the isles, rather than opt for pickup or delivery; which are also available.

Google
One star to customer service. Been coming here since 2019 and this is the first time I have ever experience this as I rarely do bottle returns. -There are no signs of where the line begins. -have seen people walk up and skip the line to be taken care of. -waiting for my turn and when I asked that I was next, was told the line starts at the other end. Customer service knew I was standing and waiting but did not say anything. -I went to stand in line only to see that the “customer service” woman, serviced the man that was behind me. Please educate customer service on etiquette, how to deal with customers and post signs.

Google
Usually like coming here as they have a great variety. Earlier today I was followed throughout the store by a lady with no shopping cart. It became very obvious. Not sure if she was there to make sure I wasn't stealing anything. Then she made small convo and left to watch someone else....

Google
Great deals using the app. Love that this is 24 hours. I can always find what I need and is always clean too. Also their brand of pancake mix produces the fluffiest pancakes ever!

Google
Stopped by here to grab flowers for a friend and found a great selection! There were plenty of bouquets in different price ranges. Lots of plants and seasonal pieces. Make your own bouquet and pick and choose what you want or choose from a handpicked options. Get it wrapped to go as a nice finishing touch! There are lots of balloon options available as well!

Google
I rarely leave negative reviews, but I had very bad experience here. This was my first time grocery shopping at Stop&Shop. When I had issue, the lady was rude and not willing to provide service. She didn’t even want to listen to me and kept saying “follow the instructions”. The customer service I received was extremely disappointing. Please train the staffs better, and the lady needs to understand what’s the customer SERVICE.

Google
This is my 2nd time experiencing this at this location. There’s a worker from Guyana that works at self check out. She only watches black people scanning their items then will pick up your belongings, check your screen and to ensure you are not stealing. She does not do this to any other race except blacks. She is racially profiling and it’s an awful feeling

Google
Prices aren't bad but Shoprite in New Hyde park is always more affordable. Produce is usually fresh, good meat selection.

Yelp
I shop at this location often, and they open at 6am, so it is converted for me on my way to work, and it is not crowded that time in the morning so I can get when I need and go. The store is organized, always packing out fresh fruit in the morning, and the bakery has baked muffins and rolls.
google avatar

Jesse Y.

Yelp
Above average supermarket with stocked shelves, organized and clean. Ample parking lot is a plus, but it's always best to come early in the morning as it tends to get very busy during midday and afternoon. The staff is generally helpful. I've never encountered any issues here.

Ann G.

Yelp
I am so shocked, sick at my stomach to find that this Natures Promise organic-grass fed hamburger, not hamburger at all. When I opened up the package of Nature's Promise grass fed hamburger, I made hamburger patties and put them in the freezer. Each one I cooked while frozen; the last hamburger had completely thawed out; when I went to cook it, it was nothing but mush pudding like it wasn't meat at all. See below.

Jim A.

Yelp
The only thing I don't like about the New Hyde Park, NY store is the customer service desk hours. It closes at 7 PM every day. There is a Shoprite supermarket in the same town and its customer service desk closes at 11PM. I made a complaint with the regional customer service recently but the customer service hours for that store still haven't changed.

Yelp
Never judge a store by the location, but by the way it is managed. I now call this my favorite Stop & Shop ever since the Carle Place location has become less organized. Excellent customer service, I always see the same workers there for years, that's also a good sign. They got a home run for this past Thanksgiving with prices and availability of advertised products. And so much more pleasant than nearby Shoprite, which is always a headache to park and shop at. I'm also always going back to fix price mistakes on my receipt or the takeout food wasn't fresh, etc.

Yelp
I know when you buy a bag of mussels, it's expected to have a few dead ones. More than half though is kind of ridiculous. I live about 20 mins away from this Stop & Shop, up the Cross Island. I like coming to this one bc it's cleaner and larger than the Bayside one. However, when I got home and started to clean these mussels, I noticed that a lot of them were dead. They were open and were not closing when tapping them or trying to close them manually. I called up the store and told them I am willing to take photographs and give them my customer ID over the phone bc it is a trek to go back. They told me that is not allowed they could not work with me on a solution. Good job on customer service, and even better selling dead seafood that could make people really sick if they don't know any better.
google avatar

Gajtana S.

Yelp
Another solid, spacious and clean Stop & Shop. Bigger than the one I usually go to in Bayside. Nice selection of organic items and prepared foods. The staff were friendly and helpful in my navigating to what I needed. Bonus: they have a Starbucks inside and plentiful mall parking. It was my first time here and I'd come back when I'm in the neighborhood.

Andrew S.

Yelp
Store has gone down! Scales are always out of paper in fruit and veg dept. Low stock on shelves, the hand scanners are never charged. When you go to use them they are not ready. Probally need addition units.

Eileen B.

Yelp
I just want to let people know the bakery is awful. I ordered a cake 5 days before I needed it for a senior citizen party, the girl took my order I explained what I wanted paid in full was given a time to pick it up they confirmed the order 1 day before pickup, and when I arrived ,the women baker said it would be a few minutes, we'll it was suppose to be 1 pm pickup, at 1:20 still know cake. This women baker said I am having trouble keeping the whip cream on the cake, really this was unbelievable, no cake people waiting I had to buy a ready made cake and get a refund, what a way to run a bakery!!!

Yelp
I normally shop at the Springsfield boulevard and Merrick.. Jamaica New York. My last experience there was enough to make me not shop there ever again, the cashier started an argument with me over a misunderstanding of the prices and then she walked away. Shopping in New Hyde really restored my strength I was treated with nothing but kindness and respect no long lines no one line all the way down the aisle to check out at one or two cashiers, every cashier was open at New Hyde They had five or six of them open. The staff that worked there was kind and they speak to you I had a problem on my line I forgot my wallet and the young lady held a line up for me until I got my wallet without any complaints go figure. From now on I am shopping at New Hyde stop & shop. The store was much cleaner stocked shelves courteous employees buggies are not left in the parking lot and there's plenty of space to park.

Yelp
I have been a fan of Stop & Shop for a while now. This place is big, I mean really big yet I always find a parking spot in their big shared lot. It's an easy in and out off of Hillside Avenue. There are a lot of cars since this strip mall has many large stores here, but I feel that traffic moves well. You enter from either side into a really huge store. What I like about Stop & Shop is that it is laid out really well and where there needs to be space there is space, and the Isles are big enough to maneuver through with a big crowd here. All their stores are also the same "look and feel," making it easy to go from store to store. There is plenty of space around the meet, dairy and a very spacious vegetable area. They also have a marvelous bakery here. It's really a one stop shop. Great deli area and plenty of great prepared foods. This place pretty much has it all. There is a pharmacy, wonderful florist and even out door furniture in season. I am not going to go aisle by aisle and let you know what they have. It should suffice that they have a huge selection of foods and there is always great sales going on with the food being displayed on the end caps throughout the store. I definitely recommend this market for your needs.

Tanya M.

Yelp
Isabela was amazing. She works at the bakery, helpful and friendly. The other lady working there was not nice, very rude.

Samantha T.

Yelp
TALK ABOUT APPLE FEVER!!!!!!!! Shout out to stop and shop for having the best Granny Smith apples during one of the busiest apple seasons. Me and my husband Timothy searched at Shop Rite, but to no avail. We were very worried as we are responsible for bringing our famous homemade apple pie for Friendsgiving. But a quick trip to stop and stop and our worries we're quickly put to rest when we saw this bed of beauties. Job well done! Give yourselves a pat on the back!

Martin S.

Yelp
The store recently took away shopping baskets so the only solution is to use a shopping cart even if you have only a couple of items. Very odd.

Fariha N.

Yelp
Love how affordable everything is at this store, especially the coffee creamers. The organization of this store is helpful to making your grocery shopping trip fun and hassle free, because of the massive amount of space there is. I love the Stop & Shop robot that runs around the store, it adds a little bit of fun to the experience. Parking lot is convenient, employees are helpful, and there is a diverse amount of products which makes cooking very fun.

Maria C.

Yelp
Never shop here on weekends and before holidays. Management NEVERS schedules enough staff. Some staff members are useless.

RANIE R.

Yelp
The staff at the customer service service counter. Are the rudest people I've ever met in my life. If the manager name Monty is Reading this .I hope he correct the situation soon before all customers start walking out from his store. I placed three calls today .I could not get through on the phone lines. When I do go through . I spoke to this rude woman . I asked her for her name she hang up on me. I was reaching out to the general manager of that store to give him feedback and one of his manager name Ren. This manager has gone above and beyond for me with the smile. But this ruthless woman would not even take a message for the GM . In any case I just give up on this.

Yelp
Five Stars and ten if I could. I swear by this supermarket and drive 20 to 30 minutes from my house to get here. Everything is fresh and clean. They have a killer seafood section and even a florist in sight. The sales are decent and they have a Starbucks inside of you need a pick me up. They always have my organic teas and the produce is almost farm fresh with organic choices that I would never buy but man. I love this place. They have been a blessing during the pandemic to many other stores are empty and this one is very well stocked.
google avatar

Sanita C.

Yelp
I honestly found this store to be overwhelming and annoying to walk through. The store is so jumbled up that it makes no sense to me, especially the produce section. There's ginger in a random section next to fruits. The organic fruits are in the middle of the regular fruits. There's like five different spots with potatoes. Veggies are all scattered. Just have one area for regular fruits. Another area with all organic fruits and organic veggies like other stores do. Put all the regular veggies together. Then another area for all types of potatoes like other stores do. There was no flour or evaporated milk. The baking section was so overwhelming too. Just have all baking spices in one section. Like ground spices for baking are with bbq spices in the baking aisle? Why lol. It is so confusing. The pasta aisle had no pasta knorr sauces but the baking supplies aisle did? The cheeses are like split up in three diff fridges. Why???? Just put all cheeses together. It's beyond mind bobbling how a supermarket can't seem to have logical sense in placing groceries. It is major time killer coming to this store.

Yelp
This review is specifically for their order pick up. I've done order pick up at other stop and shops or other supermarkets and usually have to wait or my order got delayed. This stop and shop's order pick up is always impeccable, they bring my order out in less than 5 minutes EVERY time. The employees who bring the items to my car are always incredibly friendly and helpful. Pick up is my go to and it continues to be that thanks to their amazing efficiency at this location.

Ellen S.

Yelp
I stopped going there because customer service is horrible and no one is around to help. Nor do I see anyone asking anybody if they needed help. Again today 5/20/24 my reservations about the store were confirmed. At 8:15pm there were 3 lines open for customers with 15 or more items. I went on a line with the light on and was third in line plus there were 2 people behind me. The cashier called the manager over and she closed off the light and literally after ringing up the customer walked away from the cash register. They never said anything to us. We all had to disperse to the 2 open lines and they were 8 people long at the time. Never use this "supermarket" they couldn't care less about you or your hard earned money. I believe they are tuned to believe that we are there for them. I will be telling everyone I can about my experience and will never go back there again and neither should any of you!!!

Edward S.

Yelp
Hey Stop & Shop - I just wanted to circle back on my recent feedback, in the hopes of actually having someone be attentive to this valid concern. Your parking lot continues to be a hot mess, with shopping carts haphazardly strewn all over the place, creating an opportunity for a cart to damage a parked vehicle. I recently proposed an easy solution: cart corrals staged throughout the parking lot for customers to return their carts to. I have seen this be wildly successful at other retail stores and supermarkets (even other Stop & Shop locations on Long Island), and I do not comprehend why this concept is lost on you. Aldi recently opened a grocery store a few towns over, and they have a system where you have to deposit a quarter in order to obtain a shopping cart. Yes, people were somewhat frustrated at first with this, but you know what - their parking lot is SPOTLESS. Either the customer simply returns their cart to front of the store to have their quarter returned, or if they are too lazy to bring it back and are willing to part with $0.25, then someone else will take the cart back immediately. Here's the part I find most interesting. Yesterday afternoon as I was pulling into furthest part of the parking lot (in an attempt to avoid the multiple clusters of shopping carts aimlessly scattered all over the place), I noticed a customer pushing their cart into a row of other carts that were in the parking lot - you know, just like if it was a CART CORRAL! Your customers crave and desire this, build it and they will come! Oh, and please don't tell me that an attendant promptly fetches them from the parking lot and returns them to the front of the store. Lies! As a matter of fact, I had to run back to this store later that evening (about three hours later) and the line of carts was STILL in the middle of the lot (if anything, the line got even longer as customers continued to pile them together in the middle of the parking lot). Pictures attached. As you can see, I have put a lot of time and thought into providing this valuable feedback. I would like to have the same level of thought in a reply to this issue. Please do NOT reply with your disingenuous template reply of "sorry we missed the mark here". I would prefer you provide an actual customized reply as one of the following: 1. That you actually understand and appreciate the concern, and AGREE that this location merits having cart corrals strategically placed in the parking lot. You understand the need for shopping carts to be organized together and not cause potential damage to parked cars in the lot. You can provide an estimated timeline of when cart corrals will be installed, and look forward to their success. 2. The concept of cart corrals is completely lost on you, and you prefer to have your parking lot remain in utter chaos and peril. Your primary goal here is to provide a miserable shopping experience for your customers. I anxiously await your reply.

Yelp
This Shop & Stop is a little better than other ones, but still no workers. I have been here also and noticed hardly no workers or help here. The sad part is Shop & Stop says it's hiring for all different jobs positions, but never calls people in to work. I applied to a few different locations and never heard anything back. There's people that want and need to work but their not getting called back from Shop & Stop. So who knows what's going on? It's sad.

Gina P.

Yelp
The cashiers are nice and helpful, and therefore I will give 2 stars. However, the management during the day profiles minorities, and therefore gives the whole store the taint of racism. I am an African American attorney, and I have practiced law in New York State for 30 years. The day manager with the short haircut, "watches" me as if I am a thief. I have worked too hard in this life, and have way too much to lose to ever break the law, and steal. I give back to my community, and endeavor to be a role model. It is truly sad that the color of my skin appears to carry the presumption of moral turpitude, in this manager's mind. Hopefully, this review will serve to educate.
google avatar

H L.

Yelp
Many shelves are empty, a 6 foot robot with no apparent purpose crowding aisles and deplorable checkout process with no one to assist bagging your groceries including "the scanner" (used to be cashiers). No bag people really? Are there any better grocery markets that offer traditional services in the area?
google avatar

Deborah M.

Yelp
So last night it was milk and a show at Stop&Shop. Seems a sparrow had the whole store, shoppers and employees enthusiastic about his birdy adventures. This little sparrow was working the crowd and exciting everyone. The store had called in pest control to put up netting in the produce area to catch the flying feathered friend, but he was having none of it. That bird was zooming thru the store like he owned it. At first the sparrow wasn just zooming the fruits and veggies, then it was heading towards the bread aisle and the organics. Maybe the bird needed some gluten free snacks? One customer commented, if it poops on you its good luck. Uh, ok...no for that. So $50 later and a bird show, we left the store. Bird still entertaining the customers. Thanks Mr. Sparrow...you were cool.

Yelp
I like how while entering the place they make us keep social distance a d provide with hand sanitizer and things to clean the cart to make the shopping experience safe. Then also the reshuffling of the shelves making it easy to shop for the important things and get out soon due to the redirecting of the checkout lanes.
google avatar

Lina Michelle V.

Yelp
I love this stop and shop! Parking lot can get crazy at times but there is plenty of parking if you don't mind parking further away. This place is always clean and organized. I find the produce to be fresh and reasonably priced. The staff at the deli, meat department and seafood dept are always super friendly and helpful. They have great weekly sales and carry a large selection of products. I have two other stop and shops closer to home but prefer this one and I'm willing to drive the extra mile. I come here at least one a week and find that everything is always consistent!

Yelp
I'm writing here exclusively about their floral store. Love the supermarket, but I had a recent awesome experience with their floral department. I had been looking for inexpensive floral arrangements for a party for some time and those words are usually super uncommon in a sentence together. Most florists I visited charged about $75 for a small arrangement with a few flowers. I visited Stop N Shop floral and they made me 20 custom arrangements at about $20 each with a ton of fresh flowers picked to my liking. It was a fraction of the cost, and the florists (Chetna, in particular) worked with me closely to make a bouquet that filled all my needs and fit my budget. I was blown away by their service, and I think Chetna is an awesome employee for the lengths she went to in order to make an arrangement to my liking. 20 arrangements came out to about $375, which is a steal compared to other places. The flowers are fresh and beautifully arranged. Definitely will be using them again for future parties. Seriously: Go to Stop N Shop for flowers and bring your own vases. You won't find similar quality and good pricing anywhere else. They'll bring down the price by $5 per arrangement if you bring the vase (I got awesome ones at Dollar Tree for a buck apiece and saved a ton).

Mr. J.

Yelp
I've been shopping here for years mainly due to convenience since they're open late, and I live right around the corner. But about a year ago they redesigned the store again, and removed several self-checkout belted lanes, and replaced them with tiny, overly-sensitive, self-checkout scales. I think they're designed to prevent theft, but all they do is piss people off. I've heard many people angrily complaining while on line. I normally buy roughly the same 25-30 items, but the scales can only handle a few at a time before requiring assistance if something accidently changes the weight. These devices are completely insane, and customer-hostile. They make checking out laborious and difficult. I absolutely hate them. At the same time, a lot of older "regular" food items I used to get are also no longer sold in favor of an even larger selection of ethnic, vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO, organic health food stuff. Once larger selections have been greatly reduced, so I have to go elsewhere for those things.
google avatar

Valerie B.

Yelp
They have a great selection. I'm here all the time. And they have so many coupons to help you out when shopping. I got the app and it helps me keep track of how much I've saved during the year that's nice to know And you can get points towards gas savings. That's nice. And you can earn for schools in your area. That's great to give back to the community. Their fruit is so fresh. My daughter eats so much I feel like I have to live here to keep her supply up. The staff is always nice. Even when I've had to make returns they're so present at the desk. This is definitely my go to grocery store.

Yelp
My wife is obsessed with Canada Dry Green Tea ginger ale and Nature's Promise brown eggs. We have been going to a Stop & Shop in East Meadow for over a year now. This past weekend....I had stumbled across this one in New Hyde Park and figured I should stop by. The very friendly and ever so smiling staff were outside pushing shopping carts back inside since some customers..very lazily..left their carts in the parking lot. Let's say it's a windy day...you'd be pissed if Mother Nature blasted carts all over place and banged them into your car while you're shopping. I mean..c'mon people..be considerate. So many times, I found the perfect parking space, but see 2-5 shopping carts just chilling there...la la la la la. Then, I have to partially park in the space, get out to move the carts..then pull in. At least this Stop & Shop has people who regularly look for unattended carts...I give them props for that. Each aisle was very clean. I was checking to see if food was scattered all over the floor...I didn't see anything like that. I went to the meat section and it's always a good thing to be able to pick up meat and not have blood dripping all down your hands. Yep..I have been to horrific supermarkets where that has happened and had flashbacks of scary/gory movies that I had seen. I was so happy to see that BOTH my wife's Canady Dry Green Teat ginger ale (I'm not getting any money by stating their name by the way) and her brown eggs were on sale. Now all is right in the world lol! I will be stopping by this place real soon!

Yelp
I have to say that I find This store always clean and for the most part, they always have what I am Looking for. Their fresh guacamole by the ore cut Fruit is awesome and I absolutely love their store brand of pumpkin spice coffee pods.
google avatar

Jordan E.

Yelp
The groceries are standard at all stop and shops and mostly pretty good.... however - i have to recommend that no one EVERRRRRR buy the "fresh cut fruit". It's always bad and sometimes it's rotted. They just cut up the old fruit that's gone bad or where the rest of the package was moldy; they they sell it as their fresh fruit assortments or fruit platters for parties. It's disgusting. Recently I was in a pinch and needed fruit so I had someone grab one of these fruit platters, and all the fruit was mushy and soggy. As if that isn't embarrassing enough, a few of my guests told me later that their mouths/lips were burnt from the citrus fruits in the package. Their lips were swollen and sore. When I told a few friends about the situation, I was told that a few of them got sick from it in the past. The service isn't great at this grocery store. Some employees are rude and they all take forever to ring up your groceries.

Louis R.

Yelp
Great selection of items. Store is clean and run well. Wish they had more cashiers to help get you on your way. Great parking. We like to visit late at night & beat the crowds.

Yelp
This review is for the bakery. They have the best bakery ever!!!!!! Its so good. I ordered a bunch of cupcakes in the shape of a corona bottle for my friend for her 21st birthday and it was a success. They are creative and affordable! I highly recommend it!
google avatar

Mimi O.

Yelp
Shopping since the COVID-19 pandemic started has been very stressful. I want to thank all of the people at Stop and Shop for staying open, staying stocked and staying friendly. Most of the items on my list were available today. I don't need to go to any other store. Thank you again.
google avatar

Hannah M.

Yelp
The people working here right now are doing an incredible job. These are not people who were expected or expecting to work in any kind of crisis situation and they have stepped up in an exceptional way. If you go to stop and shop right now, remember to thank every single worker you see. Because while you're panicking that they're sold out of bologna, they're working ridiculous shifts. Keep it in perspective.
google avatar

Laura C.

Yelp
Stop & Shop is big and carries a lot of stuff. That general statement right there comes loaded with the fact that it's usually pretty busy and fairly cramped, especially the vegetables and fruit area which becomes a secondary bumper car attraction and you may want to plant a helmet on your kids head to soften unexpected shopping cart collisions. Even with all that it is still a pretty good place to shop, whether it be for the Starbucks coffee you can grab in the corner or sit a grumpy spouse at, or pick out fresh goods from the bakery, deli or other order food specialty areas. S&S also carries a small variety of 'exotic' ingredients which are great if you ever want to incorporate different things into your diet or trying to recreate a missed traditional dish from your background.
google avatar

Steph C.

Yelp
Place is very busy on a friday night... Came in here in purchasing 3 items i only boight 2... The cauliflower looked really small So i opted out of buying them... I did buy bbq. Sauce which was a huge bottle for $3.99 ... Which was worth it. And also bought some small potato slider bread Check out on self checkout was rather busy too
google avatar

Julia S.

Yelp
Awesome organic selection, this stop and shop is amazing for people with food allergies or special diets. Incredible variety and so clean, my go to grocery store. Only thing is it gets extremely crowded so I like to do my shopping at night, always check the best by date on bread. Lots of parking!

Yelp
Honestly I do quite like this store because it's usually very convenient to get to and the hours are good. They've been open until 12AM... forever, which is a big bonus for me and a lot of other people on my life. Also, I always see customers running in there late at night. I'm giving a 2-star rating after this experience, though, because checking out was bizarre. Recently I've been going to the Hicksville location, not NHP, and I noticed they were changing their hours at Hicksville and closing at 10PM. I just finished a visit at my usual New Hyde Park location, albeit a late one, finishing around 10:50PM. I went to the self-checkout where I usually go and how I usually check out. I did assume they were closing at 11PM after looking at their hours on Google (forgot to check their app) but then when I went to the store, the hours were still listed as still closing at 12AM 7 days a week. Regardless, I went there early enough where even if they were closing at 10PM, I'd still be good. Anyway, I wound up spending way too much time in there and was a bit sporadic trying to also pick up some things for a family member as well. I get to the self-checkout where most of the checkouts are closed, but a couple are open and being used. There's no line, so I stroll my cart to look for some open ones- they wind up all being closed. Meanwhile, when I finally realize that, I also notice this employee who had been talking at me, saying "ma'am!, ma'am!," over and over again. Initially I did not know she was talking to me because I was looking at the screens of the self-checkouts to see if they're open, and I also had my AirPods in. A bit embarrassing, whatever. She then tells me she has to check me out at her station at the head of the self-checkout, I said that I didn't mind waiting to use the ones that were open, but she informs me that she's trying to close the other couple that were open. I don't really have a choice at this point, but okay. Let me note that there's NO screen whatsoever to see the items that are being scanned, the prices, if they're being scanned properly. Also, I personally use the self-checkout because I hate feeling like someone is breathing down my neck, and sometimes I'm trying to decide between a couple of different items, so I don't like the rush. And I think all the points I've stated about the self-checkout is largely what draws people to them in the first place. I understand I got there late and close to closing unbeknownst to me, but the manner of checkout myself and others had to use was just STRANGE. The woman checking me out also made me feel quite uncomfortable. I'm standing there with all the stuff in my cart, I pick up an item unsure if I'm getting it, she asks me "are you okay?" like what?! Huh?! I have such a pattern when I go here that I'm used to and all of a sudden I'm trying to check out, I can't see prices, I can't make sure my items are being scanned properly and not potentially getting scanned for more than what I have, I'm feeling very bombarded. This employee is telling me they've now been closing at 11PM and she usually closes the self-checkout at 10:45PM, she's telling me and another employee and other customers how badly she had to "go to the bathroom" and "I have to pee, but people keep coming!"... she asks me if I want bags, I expect her to have them but she doesn't, then she's scanning a mile a minute and I have ZERO time to bag... I got three bags and had enough time to bag about half of one of my three bags, and no, she isn't helping, nor offering to help. She says to me "sometimes I get frazzled when I'm shopping, too,"... at this point I'm almost finished and I'm just brushing it off as this girl is peculiar... I wound up walking out rushed as hell with most of my groceries still in the cart rolling around. I didn't even know they were closing, they didn't say anything over the loudspeakers, she wasn't turning people away, but was complaining to everyone around how badly she "had to pee." I guess try avoiding the blue/green-haired employee at the self-checkout, or maybe I'm dramatic. I think I was just most bothered by her asking me "are you okay?" because I didn't know wtf kind of weird system she had running, all because she "had to pee." Also, to take a turn onto the store itself, some entire areas of the store were totally barren, mostly the frozen vegetable aisle. They didn't even have the basics like frozen mixed vegetables, frozen spinach, corn, broccoli, etc. It just sucks because it's basically the only real, true grocery store in New Hyde Park. Whatever. Lastly: barely ANY mask wearing on behalf of the staff. As another reviewer stated here 4 months ago, that's still true. Despite the fact they deem COVID risky enough to change their hours, they cannot just wear masks, which is very disappointing. There are signs all over about the state mask mandate, but their own employees do not oblige. More customers than employees wearing masks

Yelp
The best grocery in town . Lots of merchandise stocks , international groceries are available , full staff especially on this first day of the week( Sunday) , located in a shopping center which is next to basic store eg pizza place , retail store etc. , has big parking lot and there are in-,house Starbucks store and Redbox vending machine. Prices are comparably low, a bagger is next to the cashier I was standing to speed up the line , there are express lane, self service lane and the scan your own thing / ring yourself service. Florist , bakery, deli , coffee shop, catering, home delivery are few of their services. The only downside , they don't have in- house pharmacy. Will stop and shop here if I could . Just to let you know, they even mail their weekly coupon if you get into their membership circle .

Yelp
Good variety of items... but there never seems to be enough open check outs. The self check out lanes usually only have half of the lanes open. Scan it customers are supposed to be able to use the self check out lanes, express lanes etc for quicker check out. However, half of the self checkout lanes have signs saying "not for scan it customers "..... On one end is a scan it only checkout kiosk... that has never been open.. There's usually displays blocking it. People use the scan it devices to speed up their shopping trip, but at this location is just adds frustration. Second week in a row that the milk has either really short or past sales dates on them.

Yelp
Really annoyed they closed their doors 20 minutes prior to close. I drove nearly 15 mInutes to get to this location and the employees don't even give you a glance when you're at the door. Stood there for a solid ten minutes and had my brother check the other door and still nothing. As someone who works in customer service and food service, it just really appalls me. If your store is scheduled to open and close at a certain time, it should stay that way. It's the first time I've seen any store do it; the fact the employees ignored our presence without explanation as to why they closed their doors 20 minutes early was just ridiculous.

Yelp
Here we are, 11 months later, and still having issues returning bottles. Let's see - only 1 plastic return functioning. Spoke with the girl at customer service and got the usual - yeah whatever attitude. I'm also somewhat baffled by the signs posted that read "According to NY State Law only 240 bottles, per day, may be returned." I love this law!! I'm returning maybe 40 plastic bottles! Here's the BIG NOPE - the guy in there with 3 SHOPPING CARTS filled with bottles and the lady with 1 FULL CART behind him. They clearly are way over the NYS Limit as posted by Stop & Shop. And Stop & Shops reaction to this - nothing. They posted the signs and let it all just happen. Lesson learned Stop & Shop! I won't encourage my son to save and return bottles anymore!! The environment will have to take a back seat - lesson learned.

Yelp
Well, been here before for my civic association bakery needs for community meetings and have always been satisfied, until today. Ordered 2 half sheet cakes on Sunday for this evenings community meeting and when I picked them up, the icing on the top surfaces of both cakes was cracked severely and when I inquired about it, I was told they dried out. Dried out! They were too be made fresh. How long were they sitting around that they had time to dry out. Won't be back next time I need bakery items.
