The History of Indiana’s Pork Tenderloin Sandwich | Eater

"A Greenburg diner known among fans for extremely large pork tenderloins — frequently touted as being "the size of your head" — emphasizing generous portions and a showy presentation." - Samantha Weiss Hills

First time working in Greensburg (Indiana); stopped in for a small lunch; ordered BLT sandwich with lemonade; Kelli (server) was very friendly and courteous;

Google
Sorry, I just don’t get all the great reviews. I ordered fish dinner. Menu stated white fish, I received a very strong, fishy piece of fried catfish. Fries were cold and old. Pretty bad when the best thing on your meal is cottage cheese. Cheeseburger was way overpriced- almost $12 for something that would be $8 anywhere else. Substituted sweet potato fries for the chips that came with the burger- $4.15 up charge for 4 - 4! - fries. I remember this place being much, much better. I understand it’s been sold a couple times, a lot was lost. I really wanted to like Stories again, but cannot.

Shannon was our server today, she was very pleasant and attentive. Storie's was such a quaint little place, it gave the feel of an old fashioned ice cream parlor. Prices were very reasonable.

Tough review to leave, love the small diner feel. It was emptying out when we walked in at 10:45 on a Sunday, but still got busy again as we waited for food. Our waitress told us they only serve breakfast on Sunday and we couldn't order lunch from their Sunday Lunch menu that the Sunday Lunch menu says is served from 11-2. One of my children was disappointed but ordered a pancake and bacon meal with a side of hash browns bc she was hungry. My other child can't have dairy in sauces like gravy so ordered a "working man breakfast" that the menu states is two eggs over hash browns with a side of bacon, and I ordered a breakfast quesadilla. We waited almost 30 minutes for the meals. My daughter's came with gravy over the potatoes, something not stated on the menu, when we pointed out that wasn't what she ordered, we were told that oh yes it just comes that way, and we explained we wouldn't have ordered that if we had known. The explanation, that usually they warn people, while sure that makes sense, we weren't warned, but why not like change the menu or just not do that to avoid confusion? Why suddenly add something that is very clearly not on the menu to a meal? It seemed so strange. They immediately, like instantly, produced a second plate of plain hash browns and eggs for my daughter to correct the issue, which we were very grateful for after waiting with two hungry kids. The breakfast quesadilla was delicious and my daughter's both loved the pancake. As we were leaving, the table behind us questioned why they couldn't order lunch and the other waitress corrected our waitress and they were indeed allowed to order lunch... So I'm guessing, just be patient and ask if it seems off. It was our first time in. Pies looked good and apparently sell out quickly. Overall, wasn't impressed at first and felt very frustrated, but they did make it right very quickly and my food was good. Might be awhile before we come back, but would try again. Everyone was nice.

Visited 10/8/22 Place was clean, staff was friendly and prices are amazing. Food was good, couple things. They don’t make their biscuits they’re prepackaged, the gravy is powder mixed with water. The eggs weren’t cooked as requested; over hard came out with runny whites. Over medium came out with runny whites. It’s hard to cook eggs I guess. Over all good food for the price. If you pay with a card they add 3.99% to the bill. If you pay with cash you apparently get a 3.99% discount. Except I’m not sure how if the prices listed in the menu are cash price.

This little diner is a gem. So happy we got to return while on our trip. I adore their big pork tenderloin sandwich. And I do mean big! Cut the tenderloin in half and had it next day with eggs for breakfast. If anywhere near Greensburg, Indiana you should treat yourself to this yesteryear diner.

Georgina A.

Google
Have ate here a few time when around Greensburg. This time enjoyed their breakfast of bacon, eggs, potatoes, biscuits, and gravy. Best coffee ☕️ too. We took a peanut butter pie home and it was very good too. Nice old fashion atmosphere and small town country service.

Google
Decided to go local and found this gem! Food is fantastic. We parked in the back so were pleasantly surprised to see that we had a great view of a favorite town landmark. The Tree! Y'all gotta stop here. The food and the service are outstanding. Try those fried pickles! And PIE,y'all, PIE!

Yelp
This is our go to restaurant during softball season. Excellent food and the wait staff is so friendly and anxious to make your visit nice.

Yelp
We stopped here on our way to Tennessee. Great food. Amazing staff. Highly recommend this gem!!
google avatar

Rebecca L.

Yelp
I finally stopped there after so many years with my grandma. I also had a great service, I did not the waitresses name. She did excellent job. I got BLT, onion rings and cole slaw. The Cole slaw is so GOOD! I will be back there again with either Clifton or Colton. Place is clean!

Yelp
I flew into Greensburg on business. The airport kindly provides a crew car, so we went into town searching for lunch. We stopped at a couple of restaurants on the public square. Some of the locals regarded us like we'd just beamed down off a Klingon starship. This wasn't the case when we walked into Storie's restaurant, indeed, we were warmly welcomed. The food was good, and I especially recommend the homemade peach pie ala mode. Becci (her spelling) was especially warm, welcoming, and sincerely nice. The ambiance was busy but not loud. I didn't take advantage of it, but they offered a remarkable Thanksgiving dinner with the works for thirteen dollars. The lady next to me tried, but she couldn't finish it all.

Dale B.

Yelp
Just enjoyed an excellent lunch at Stories where the food and service was exceptional! Had 7 relatives at lunch and everyone left pleased with the quality of the food and service.

Yelp
Was pleasantly surprised at how large the menu selection is and how reasonable the prices are. Plus there is a list of more than 10 homemade pie flavors to pick from so you need to save room! Picturesque day on Main Street. Snow globe view of dignified Courthouse across the street. Pretty small town, super friendly helpful waitress. Food hot and decent. Place not to be missed.
google avatar

Ross S.

Yelp
This is your classic amazing small town diner. Home cooked meals and pies off the charts delicious. The service is spot on and very good. The ambiance is right out of the 1970's. The fried chicken special was the perfect size and cooked very well. Make sure you make room for some of the best pie anywhere. The fillings and crust are absolutely amazing.

Yelp
Neat little restaurant located on the square across from the historic courthouse tower tree. Staff was friendly. Service was good. Ordered the bacon omelette, but was disappointed that it included no sides, and it was $8.58, so i ordered a side of toast ($1.56). Everything was a few cents more than the menu indicated, which, I'm sure it's due to food costs. Overall, I'm sure I'd come back, but try something else.

Scott B.

Yelp
The best pork tenderloin sandwich so far! Service was excellent. Booth was uncomfortable, but the food made it livable. I will definitely return.

David S.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. We had the Big Tenderloin and Alaska Whitefish sandwiches and they were very good. The ambiance is that of an old midwestern town diner and it was very clean.

Debbie H.

Yelp
Good service, great tenderloin sandwich. Lots of good choices on menu. Parking off street in rear.
google avatar

Terry B.

Yelp
First time here. Won't be back. Wife's breakfast burrito was all potatoes. Bacon wasn't fully cooked and had to tell server we hadn't ordered. Had 4 cups of coffee before food even came out.
google avatar

Troy S.

Yelp
Quaint, cozy diner on the south side of Greensburg tree courthouse. Quintessential Hoosier food.
google avatar

Melanie N.

Yelp
Please use gloves when handling my food. Especially toast. Also, don't handle money before handling my food without washing your hands
google avatar

Audrea H.

Yelp
Great home style food. Tenderloins are great. Their homemade pork patties are awesome as well as their famous pies!! You can't go wrong with a visit to stories.
google avatar

Cory D.

Yelp
I love old diners that have daily specials and this one is no different. The food was good, but the service was super. There were so many local people eating the place was full and you could hear them chatting away. This was a nice stop for some homestyle food on my day of travel.

Yelp
Looking for a bite while day tripping around the state, my family and I stumbled across this Greensburg staple. The restaurant is nestled into the historic downtown shop fronts directly across from the county courthouse and the infamous tower tree. Walking in, much like the downtown area itself, made me think I had stepped back in time. Not that the patrons were dressed a la 50-60's chic but the familiar tone and jovial nature of all those tables felt like we were in a different time. The food is consistent with any small town family diner. Being there for breakfast, our fare was straight forward. Family order of biscuits and gravy to share. The biscuits were good, clearly made in house but the gravy was better. Word is that you have to go early on the weekends because the biscuits sell out. Luckily we got to try. My dad ordered the omelet and said it was good. Mom had bacon eggs and toast and I had sausage eggs and toast. We both ordered a side of tatters. The meats had a good flavor but the hash browns were under done and greasy. For the price it was good though. This place was hopping for a Saturday. That said it took a while to get our food. The staff was friendly, and kept the coffee coming. The pies were just being cut for the day. They looked delicious and might draw me back sometime. Overall not bad.

Scott B.

Yelp
This is one of the last places in Greensburg for me to get a Big tenderloin sandwich and now after eating there I will not be going back my fries were cold and my appetizer the centers were ice cold and the waitress never came back to ask if everything was okay.
google avatar

Keith W.

Yelp
This place is not closed. I ate there 7/19/22. Very good. Great service. Friendly staff. Good food.

Brad S.

Yelp
Excellent!! Can't say enough. The chicken is amazing and so moist. I can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Peter P.

Yelp
This is your quintessential small-town, Midwestern diner. Friendly service, cheap eats, filling. And of course there's a tenderloin sandwich. Nothing to write home about. Mainly 'cause it already feels like home.

Arthur A.

Yelp
Certainly not the "Old" Iconic Storie's. New is certainly not better. Too bad. The original Storie's added to the charm and personality to the town; along with the "Tree in the Tower."
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
Back in the day, I would head to Storie's after school. My favorite was the Roast Beef sandwich with french fries. After going to college and getting my job, moving away from Greensburg, I had this idealistic view in my head of Stories. I would bring it up in conversations of where I grew up. It got to the point where I wondered if my memories were becoming better than reality. On a not too distant trip back to the burg, my family went to Stories. I ordered Roast Beef sandwich with fries. It was still exactly how I remembered. It's nothing that will knock your socks off, but it has a home town feeling to it. If it is your first visit to Storie's, I would not order what I did. Go for the tenderloin and be ready to take some home... or to roll out the door. Pies are good too!

Leah A.

Yelp
I work here but even before I did, I love the place. It's adorable and inexpensive and the food is fantabulous!
google avatar

Haley R.

Yelp
Would not recommend this place nothing like before. Waitresses talk about customers and run of when trying to confront them. We heard them talking about the table. Waitresses are very rude and Manger isn't worries about there customers.
google avatar

Kathy H.

Yelp
Always good - never disappoints!! We used to live in Greensburg and Storie's is a place that we miss a lot! We don't live close anymore so it is a real treat when we get to go back. We all had tenderloins which are hands down one of the best tenderloins in the state! I had onion rings - also really good! The others had French fries and sweet potato fries (which I sampled). All were great! We we too full to enjoy a slice of the homemade butterscotch pie so we purchased a pie to take home. The pie is always delicious as well! I love the charm of the restaurant too - the interior has not changed and in my book that just adds to the charm of the place. Just a good hometown place to eat.

Yelp
I have never been here before, but I have read about it somewhere and then my brother ate here and he couldn't wait to come back and he wanted us to see it. I knew the town was also known for its historical courthouse with the tree growing through the roof. The restaurant is directly across from the courthouse. There is a square around the courthouse with so many places for a person like me to venture into-AFTER a great meal at Stories of course. As soon as I entered Stories I was enchanted with the old time ambiance and charm. How often do you see a working lunch counter? How about booths with attached coat hangers? I know, some of you are saying that all of that is fine, but what about the food?? I ordered the Roast Beef Manhattan. The gravy was dark brown and rich and delicious. The roast beef was juicy and so tender that it just fell apart. The mashed potatoes-I ate them so quick because of the gravy that the mashed taters went down like butter. My brother had Chicken Tenders which were good, but could have been hotter. He got two sides and chose Macaroni Salad and Potato Salad which he really enjoyed both. My friend ordered the fried tenderloin. That sandwich looked really good! Pounded out not too thin. It was pretty big and had some meat to eat! I highly recommend that you take a nice drive to go eat at Stories. We had the pleasure of meeting Don Storie, one of the owners. He makes you feel at home. Be sure to order homemade pie for dessert. My peach pie was stupendous! After your meal walk over to the courthouse and look at all the beautiful ways our brave veterans have been honored and remembered. It gave me chills and brought too life why we should be thankful to be AMERICANS!
google avatar

Jeff B.

Yelp
Indiana pork tenderloin at its finest in Greensburg - absolutely perfect - I would dare someone to find a better tenderloin - perfect breading - perfectly cooked - great service - reasonably priced - can't wait to bring family!
google avatar

Nanette L.

Yelp
Old style diner, wonderful tenderloin slitable good coffee and wonderful service! Don't hesitate to try the menu tastes o America
google avatar

Jim G.

Yelp
So you say you like comfort food well then...I recommend the breaded tenderloin sandwich (it's huge!) and the homemade pies... mmm! If you're in Greensburg or just driving past on I-74 to or from Cincinnati, it's worth stopping by! This place is very comfortable, lot's of locals eat here on a regular basis. The waitstaff is friendly and helpful. They assume everyone wants pie and for a good reason it's great! It is located on the square so you have a perfect view of the famous tree in the courthouse tower.
google avatar

Lindsey Y.

Yelp
My favorite place to visit when I travel. Cherry pie is amazing and they are known for their country fried steak. Gets crazy busy at lunch but worth the wait. I have never had a bad meal while here. They have all kinds of pies too. Stays true to making home cooked meals!
google avatar

Rick G.

Yelp
There are few things I love more than a small town diner, and this certainly fits the bill! A long, narrow restaurant, it features a large family dining area, and a pretty large lunch counter that reminds me of the old Woolworth's lunch counters. It's certainly got a homey feel! The breaded tenderloin was one of the best I've EVER had, hands down. The fries were pretty standard fries, and the cole slaw was much creamier than I prefer, but the taste was fine. My wife's pork BBQ was decent, but nothing pushed it into the stellar arena. Service was prompt and friendly, and the price was right. We're fans and we will return.
google avatar

Kennita M.

Yelp
Best tenderloins in Indiana and homemade pie! The pie is so worth the calories! I am so full after the giant tenderloin that I take the pie home for later.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Hands down the best breaded pork tenderloin sandwich that you will ever eat! The pie is to die for. You must always order the pie. It doesn't even matter what kind of pie.. because they do not make a bad pie. The owners are so friendly, they know you, your parents, and your grandparents. Literally! It's like going home when you walk in the door. Love Storie's!!
google avatar

Leslie R.

Yelp
Storie's is one of those little small town mom and pop restaurants that's been around forever. You walk in and all the locals know when you're not a local, unless you're married to a local visiting - then chances are they all heard you were in town. Every time we're in town visiting my husband's family a visit is not complete without having breakfast or lunch here ... and the dish we usually get - the pork loin! Which basically tastes like chicken fried stake but made with pork. The people are always friendly when we go. You can't sit more than 10-15 minutes without someone coming in and waving to someone they know or someone tapping another person on the shoulder in a friendly gesture as their leaving. Located off the famous G-burg square, if you can't find parking out front - try the back, and use the rear entrance. The restaurant is located in one of the old historic town square buildings which are very narrow and tight in areas. If you're looking for a great place to grab a solid breakfast or sandwich for lunch - with a slice of pie, it's all here. Condiments are on the table and coffee cups filled while your read the paper. Heartland, USA. There's something quaint and nostalgic about the experience every time.
google avatar

Steve M.

Yelp
A classic neighborhood restaurant. Breaded tenderloins are outstanding and the pies are worth the drive to Greensburg. 5 stars because Storie's is in a class by its self. Not fancy but very good!
google avatar

Sam W.

Yelp
Stories is a Greensburg institution. It sits on the courthouse square with a nice view of the tree on top of the courthouse tower and has a bevy of typical diner food. You will find a lot of town elders eating dinner at 3 or 4pm, or lunch at 10am (old people time), but will almost always find it crowded at any time. Parking is in an alley in the back or in the lined spaces in front of the courthouse. They make real ice cream shakes (I recommend chocolate) and my friend's parents are big on the ham salad. If you are from out of state, I would recommend getting the giant pork tenderloin sandwich -- a staple of the midwest -- as it's one of the menu items Stories is famous for. Also, in the menu is a little history of the tree on the courthouse tower... yes, it has a history. The people who work there are pretty nice. I remember, when I was a kid, they'd make me a special omelette: bacon, jelly and cheese. Today, I can't believe I ever used to eat such a thing, but they were very accommodating to a weird little kid. These are the perks of Small Town America. I almost forgot... they have a huge selection of homemade pies. Many of them are meringue (lemon, coconut, etc), but they also have fruit pies and a pie that I've only ever seen in Indiana: Sugar Cream. I'm not a pie guy, but I know lots of people who will go there just for a slice.

Yelp
I live in the far western suburbs of Philadelphia PA. My family own a farm in Morris IN. Whenever I am out there I always try and stop at Stories. The Pork Tenderloin Sandwich is legendary. It's a just like stepping into a scene from the 1950's the way the restaurant is set up. A long counter down one side and rows of tables and booths down the middle and the other side. It is like stepping into a time-machine into small town America.
google avatar

Suzanne B.

Yelp
My friend and I ventured over to Greensburg for the day to antique. She said we MUST get some pie at Stories. It was a total dive diner...like from a movie! Kitchy and I thought that was cool. We ordered pie....I wouldn't say the selection of pie was extensive or creative at all. The waitress brought it over and kinda dropped it on the table and left. It was COLD. I mean she didn't ask if we wanted it heated, so I didn't know to add that, but man...not great presentation. We called her over and asked if she could heat it and she very kindly did immediately. It was the definition of "Meh. I've experienced better." However! I will add that while in a shop there were 3 old ladies just going on and on about Stories friend chicken. They talked it up so much, that I would totally come back just to see if they knew what they were talking about to this Southern girl.

Yelp
Great !!!!!! Reminds me of going to lunch 20-30 yrs ago. Find a seat and enjoy Home cooking Pie was amazing!!!
google avatar

Tamika T.

Yelp
The locals recommended this place and I'm glad they did. The waffle sweet potato fries were so delicious they come with cinnamon butter for dipping. Taste like home cooking and would definitely stop here again.

Julie W.

Yelp
Storie's is the perfect spot to grab great coffee and good homemade food. We had excellent service.

Barb N.

Yelp
We've been visiting family in Greensburg for 30 years and have never stopped at Stories. Tonight we wanted some comfort food before hitting the road. Business was steady on this cloudy Tuesday evening with folks coming in for carry-out and eating in the dated but adequate dining room. The smell of stale cigarette smoke near the restrooms probably indicates where the smoking section was in years past. Husband ordered fish sandwich, coleslaw and sweet potato waffle fries. The fish was not hand breaded but rather some factory made brand right out of a freezer bag, no doubt. It was a bit bigger than the bun, not too greasy, light and crisp. Fries were a little dry but served w honey butter. The slaw was cold and tasty. I ordered the grilled tenderloin, mashed potatoes and pickled beets. The meat was quite dry and not very flavorful. (Should've gotten the breaded version. )Eaten w a bit of good hot mashed potatoes and salty gravy helped. The pickled beets were cold and good- Not homemade, but decent. The brewed iced tea was quite good! I'd heard their homemade pies are good, so we bought a piece to take home. Not sure we'll be back anytime soon, but locals seem to like it just fine.
google avatar

Derek C.

Yelp
The pies are the greatest in town. Food is good and the history of the place is excellent

Janet K.

Yelp
This is a great hole in the wall diner that's been in Greensburg apparently forever. went there for a meeting and decided to have what they're famous for. pork tenderloin sandwich french fries and a chocolate milkshake. they did not disappoint. totally lived up to their reputation. you must go there and experience it; like going back in time. Friendly people, great location, food delicious. Go!
google avatar

Anita M.

Yelp
Oh my gosh- the hand breaded tenderloin here cannot be beat! It is so good with the perfect seasoning. And it really could use two buns, it's so big. The fries are perfectly golden crisp and the side of coleslaw had the perfect tanginess. Did I mention the homemade pies? I'm so full from the tenderloin but you really cannot leave here with out the famous pie. My fav is banana cream. They have quite a selection of flavors. They are all so good!
google avatar

Ron B.

Yelp
We stopped in for lunch this past week after reading about the pork tenderloin. I must tell you it certainly lived up to the hype. This thing was huge! As we like to say: "as big as your head" Hot and tasty! The onion rings were excellent also. They were large slices of real onion, breaded and fried to perfection. I also recommend the vegetable soup. Service was prompt and friendly. We will be coming back.
google avatar

dave a.

Yelp
gotta love them Hoosiers - big ol pork tenderloins!

Tamara I.

Yelp
We read great reviews and were excited to try this place. We arrived there at end 9:40, the restaurant was busy, but no wait for a table. We ordered and waited, and waited, and waited at 10:37, still no food, so we left. We watched a guy make a huge pan of instant potatoes, not exactly homemade food in my opinion.
