CHARMING BUT WITH DISAPPOINTMENTS
Dates of stay: 3 nights - March 14 2021 through March 17 2021.
AWESOME: The layout of the bathroom area was wonderful. The sink and mirror area is separate from the throne room and shower. Beautiful stone work, easy walk-in-shower (no tub). We were in the Roadrunner building, with a few out out the front window of the Mesquite Sand Dunes (2 miles away). The refrigerator was pretty quiet. There was a very nice reading chair and padded footstool.
ALSO: To walk outside at night into the black parking lot, then carefully onto the dirt just a little ways away and be sitting in Outer Space with the Milky Way swooshing overhead.
DISAPPOINTING: The pool was too cold to swim in. When I complained, I was given a certain temperature range that it was "heated" to and I let them know "that's too cold for us". The employee admitted "that's too cold for me, too". POSSIBLE REASON: the "hotel" (really a motel since many rooms you drive right up to) is prone to dust storms which fill the pool with mud, requiring it to be regularly drained, mucked out, and refilled. That would take a lot of energy to reheat all that water, and this not Furnace Creek, with natural already-heated water emerging from the ground.
EVEN WORSE OF A DISAPPOINTMENT: At check-in, when I asked about the wifi, they warned me that "it can be a bit slow when so many people are on it". Now that in of itself is an interesting statement. They have wifi. But if it's slow, it's the fault of the guests, because too many of us are using it. In reality, they have a woefully deficient wifi system. Worst of all, there is NO WIFI in the Roadrunner Building where we were staying. They certainly did not volunteer that upon check-in, but admitted it when I asked. WHY DOES THIS MATTER? Because in this modern day, a "connection" has become a basic need. Are you thinking "hey I have my cell phone" well if so, think again, even cell-phone data is very sketchy in Death Valley. (If you really need wifi, and fantastic wifi at that, stay 30 miles southeast at Furnace Creek. More expensive... but not that much more expensive.)
SUMMARY: Stovepipe Wells is a very charming throwback to the days of yesteryear. I was here in 1972 as a kid with my family, and of the two viable options, Stovepipe Wells has always been the less expensive option. Charming mediocrity, then and now. So enjoy it for what it is! It's located a full 30 minutes (25 miles) northeast of the more desirable alternative (The Ranch at Death Valley formerly known as Furnace Creek Ranch) so as far as location, if you're doing this end of the park, stay here. Just be ready to remain dry (cold pool) and disconnected (slow wifi).
