The Best Pizza by the Slice in Portland and the Surrounding Suburbs | Eater Portland

"Drunkenly stumbling into Straight From New York for a slice of cheese has been a Portland tradition since the ’80s, still going strong on both sides of the river. These are unfussy pies, pale golden crusts supporting old-school pepperoni or thin slivers of green pepper; the shop often offers beer and slice specials throughout the day. The classic glass case always houses a chef’s special or two, whether it’s a standard like Hawaiian or something off-the-wall topped with, say, strawberries." - Nathan Williams

Some of the best pizza in the region, definitely the best New York style. A little pricey, does offer pizza by the slice, good value for the money. Monday night large pizza is $18, best value in town on a Monday evening. Restrooms are kept clean and nice. Staff is very friendly, you don’t often see pizza dough made the old-fashioned way. When I was waiting for my pizza this evening, I saw them tossing the pizza dough and I asked if they were OK if I took pictures. One each time dough was “tossed”. TV sports usually on but no sound unless a big game? No background music, there’s something maybe that could be worked on. But generally, it is quiet and a pleasant place to sit alone and eat or to have a family night or even a date night. Just feels like home. Some of the interior fixtures show signs of wear just from age, well taken care of and clean but could use updating. I highly recommend this location, an excellent place to take a family on Monday evening for family pizza night. Also, DoorDash now delivers from here. Pineapple only pizza was requested by my daughter so don’t hold it against the host!

Google
Some of the best Pizza you will ever have. Just amazing flavors. The only downside was it's not air conditioned and it was a very hot day. Also had to bus our own tables and clean them before sitting down. But the quality of the pizza made it worth while. The sauce is incredible, the crust is top notch and quality of meats used was excellent!

Pizza is fine but hey guys some reupholstery on some of these seats is needed it’s like a toilet bowl. Music sucks

Google
I picked up a Greek pizza from this location near Jamba Juice on Commercial for $26. Big fat ugly crust with no flavor, big chunks of raw tomatoes falling off when you try to pick it up, and tons of onions. The reason I ordered this crust was that a week or so ago I had a slice of the same pizza at the location further north on Commercial & Owens. One of the best pizza slices ever! I assumed that all locations would use the same recipe and style, but evidently that's not true. I will never go back to this location. Mediocre at best!

Google
I just picked up a veggie 18inch pizza. It's beautiful the guys made it prefect. The veggies are fresh. Their service has always been good. Friendly and helpful. Thank you

Google
When it comes to Pizza by the slice and New York style pizza, this is one of the better pizza places in Salem. Here's a tip though. Make sure you get there early as I've found that sometimes they heaters don't keep the pizza very fresh and if you go at the end of the day unless you ask them to make it fresh, you're going to get lower quality than what you will if it's fresh.

Google
I love this pizza so much. Great location and seating, with other nearby shopping options, this restaurant makes incredible and truly New York style pizza, each and every day.

Google
The pizza here is always good, and we have always enjoyed the Afternoon Slices they have for a lower price, but today we tried the Calzone! Quite good as a Chicken Bacon Ranch with Mushrooms added, and the only thing I would change for next time is ask for it to be baked longer to see how it turns out. It's nicely thick and a little doughy in the right way at the two corners. Soft, juicy, very flavorful, and easily shared between two people. I don't usually go elsewhere than Costco, but this place has always had my attention since I first walked through the doors. Final word is that the customer service is very friendly and generous. I wish I remember the name of the man who was working yesterday around 12:30pm-1:00pm, cuz I'd give him a shout out here.

Yelp
@sfnypizza.com South Commercial location: unless you carry out, they do not quality-check their pies. Do not order for delivery. Ordered a margherita pizza - ended up with what appeared to be a slider: all toppings on one side of the pie. Did not have basil, the extras were piled on two slices, as opposed to half of the pie. For the number one American food delivery item, this is NOT the place to get it from. GrubHub orders are not made with care. The employees making the food figure that GrubHub will comp you, if you complain. Just pisses me off that they waste time, money and food.

Yelp
We came in and ate after a show at the Elsinore, so, around 7pm. The place was filthy! Tables all dirty, the bathroom was absolutely disgusting, a staff member came out and left the toilet filled with paper and didn't flush, and urine all over the toilet! I doubt she even washed her hands!!!!! The customer service was NOT friendly at all. They acted like they didn't want to serve us so close to closing, which, I believe is 9pm, so.....yeah! I don't know, the vibe was off, pizza MID....time to find a new pizza joint on Commercial!

Yelp
This was my first time here (we just moved to South Salem) and if they'd gotten my order correct I'd have given 5 stars (because the pizza was very good, just wasn't what I ordered). Didin't notice the mistake until I got home so some of their missing 5th star is probably on me. They accidently put sausage instead of Canadian Bacon on my SFNY pizza. Hey, everyone makes mistakes so don't let this review stop you from ordering from here. For sure it was one of the better NY style pizzas I've had in a while. Since I didn't dine-in I can't say much about the ambiance, however they have a selection craft beers on tap and also fill growlers at what I thought was a good price. I'll definitely be going back here.

Yelp
I have been and gotten new York pizza but I still think this spot is the best. Can't go wrong with any of their slices but my favorites are the chicken bacon ranch, pepperoni and bbq chicken
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic place! The food is great and fast I recommend their breadsticks with ranch. Just don't get the wings.

M W.

Yelp
The lady working 10/2 evening was extremely unprofessional. This was the first time I ever came into SFNY pizza and walked out with nothing .

Breanna W.

Yelp
the service wasn't friendly when we arrived and when I went to the bathroom, a worker came out and she left the bathroom a mess covered in urine and toilet paper & the pizza was also cold and old yet I paid full price!!!! Not coming back or supporting this business, yuck!!!!

Yelp
Love the pizza crust and especially the light sauce. Most pizza restaurants give me terrible heartburn, but not this pizza. This pizza melts in your mouth. Yum yum yum

Flowjoe D.

Yelp
Great thin crust pizza. Hard working staff that cranks out quality pies - on time. Our go to place for pizza night.

Yelp
In little Salem, OR, SFNY (Straight From New York) is the place to get a really close to NYC slice! Some NY guy in the 80s came here, taught a few Mexicans how to make a New York Slice and well, they DID A PRETTY GOOD JOB! They're still here! Three stores in Salem, three in Portland. The way to have it is to order a cheese slice HOT and have it right away when the crust is crunky. Tell 'em to put the slice on a paper plate, NOT in the box! You enclose that slice, it's a goner. Sogginess ensues. That's the closest you're gonna get to a NY slice in Oregon, and that includes Portland where some pizzarias claim they're NY pizza; they're NOT. I tried them, they're a freakin' JOKE! An atrocity! The SFNY on Commercial and Fairview, they're the BEST when it comes to a slice which in NYC means a cheese slice; you DON'T have to SAY a CHEESE slice! A slice IS a CHEESE slice! If you decide a plain slice is not your thang and you want toppings, make sure they heat it up for a long time or else you're get cold toppings. Back in Brooklyn in the 70s, Scotties on the corner of 57th and 5th Ave had great slices while Johnny's on 5th Ave and 58th St. had the BEST Sicilians! Never had I had a better Sicllian! They're still THERE! If you are in NY, you NEED to get over there! No, there's no place in Oregon where you can get a square like at Johnny's! Too freaking BAD. Those were my best memories of pizza EVER! And I tried John's on Bleecker and Totonno's in Brooklyn too, both of which you'll find on Yelp as great, NOT! Neither of them were better than SFNY or John's. In the words of Stan Lee, "Nuff Said!" Ti auguro il meglio.

Yelp
The pizza is awesome!!! My family and I love to order. D pick up from them!!! Glad we have a place like this in Salem, Or to grab a slice at!!

Vizzy T.

Yelp
This place is becoming so cheap they barely putting any cheese on the cheese pizza this is sad man you charging top dollar per slice and barely putting any topping on the damn thing.. foh

Kristi M.

Yelp
I was so disappointed. This is the worst pizza I've had in Salem. Dry, flavorless and won't be back.
google avatar

Yelp
I have been enjoying this pizza since I moved to independence. The best gluten free crust in town. Only problem is only some of their cooks know how to prepare w out overcooking it. Gluten free crusts cooks differently then regular crust and two times I've gotten it burned and this last time was not just burned around the edges but not able to eat burned. Bummer cuz the sauce snd pizza toppings are excellent here! Work with your staff to make sure they can prepare this crust well and consistent every time. AND biggest thing is two sets of eyes on every delivery/order. It should never have made it out their door that burned. Two employees should be checking. The cook and the assistant manager or front end Emplyoee sending the orders out the door. Nothing worse then waiting an hr for burnt pizza!
google avatar

Margaret M.

Yelp
Subpar pizza. It took forever for the pizza to arrive and once it did it wasn't that good. Friendly environment however.
google avatar

J K.

Yelp
If you want to repeat you card number over the phone 3 times say your address twice only for them to get it wrong and call you an hour after you order asking you to come outside to realize they are not out there and have the wrong address and have you pizza in this condition after going through allllll that ....... this might be the place for you
google avatar

Karl G.

Yelp
Went in for a slice, I was asked, "Do you want it extra crispy?" Huh? I shrugged my shoulders, I said I just want a regular slice of pizza. Well now I know what it means because I got a lukewarm slice. Pizza seemed good but c'mon you had one job. Weird

Kell L.

Yelp
I used to come here often but hadn't been in for a while. I decided to go yesterday and am not sure I will be going back. They do not wear gloves while making food. The person working the register had extremely dirty hands and his fingernails were filthy. Not very reassuring seeing that and then seeing that they don't wear gloves. I had already paid so I threw my food out when I got home.
google avatar

Justin M.

Yelp
Excellent beer and great pizza, huge slices! I had the SFNY without cheese. Superb...
google avatar

Henry M.

Yelp
Although there's cheaper alternatives, nothing quenched the thirst for desperate pieces of pizza than the nostalgic feel of this location.
google avatar

Lisakay M.

Yelp
This place has good thin crust pizza and good salads, but every time I order delivery it takes them an extra 45 minutes to make the pizza so plan to wait awhile.
google avatar

Aleksandr B.

Yelp
I love their pizzas and their combo meal for a quick bite. They have the most unique pizza and I've never been to New York, nor had their pizza but if it's anything like this than that's great. Never had a bad experience and always wanna come back!
google avatar

Joe G.

Yelp
"Straight from New York?" Are they talking about the pizzas, or their prices? 29.50(34.50 w/tip) for a large 1/2 plain 1/2 pep and mush, and 2 sodas! A whole pep is only 22, so why am I paying more? They charged an extra buck for "1/2 and 1/2"... How does that cost extra especially when "1/2" IS PLAIN? $3 is also stupid expensive for a small bottle of soda. It might be some of the best pizza in Salem... but it's still Salem. For $35 here you could eat mexican food for a week. Heck, you could eat Chinese food for a week and a "1/2." 4 and 1/2 stars for the pizza, -1 and 1/2 stars for value.

Carter E.

Yelp
The workers were fine. They were hanging out in the back and took a minute to notice me but they were nice enough. The place is a mess and the back half of the shop has been taken over by stock and storage. I bought two slices for $9.50 which isn't inherently unfair except when compared to the quality of food. The new york flop is replaced by an inedible sogginess that starts at the tip and ends at the halfway point. The last 50% of the pizza to the crust is actually good. If they can pull things together and put in the work, this place could still be a good spot for a slice of pizza.

Cassidy K.

Yelp
I called twice and was hung up on twice, called back again...she said "oh ya, we're busy"....REALLY??

Christine T.

Yelp
Poor delivery service our last few orders. Food arrived cold and super late missing items. Staff didn't offer solutions or seem to care. We're done with this business.
google avatar

Alison P.

Yelp
My partner and I ordered 3 slices. Cheese, Chicken Bacon Ranch and Pesto Veggie. The cashier asked if our orders were "together" and we said yes. If I had known "together" meant stacked on top of one another in a small box, I would've said no. We opened the box and I picked up the top slice (cheese) and the "tip" flopped down on to my hand. The crust was so thin and greasy it felt like a wet paper towel. I am not the type to complain about food, but this is the second time this has happened at this location. I will drive the extra distance to the Owens St or Downtown locations to avoid the poor customer service and sloppy slices at South Commercial.

Jessica B.

Yelp
I ordered from here about 6 months ago and they charged my card twice so I hadn't been back since, decided to try again and paid over the phone and when they delivered I was not home and they made my child pay them in cash saying it wasn't paid for. I called and the answer I got was " oh ha hah the driver got the wrong receipt" I will never order from here again and worn against anyone ordering, make sure you check your card if used to order only gave one star because I had to select something

K G.

Yelp
I lived in San Diego for 16 years and loved the variety of NY Pizza. It's something I was really missing living in Albany. It's been 6 years and this place was a little piece of heaven for me. The pizza is amazing and the staff is friendly. Highly recommend!

Annika M.

Yelp
Delicious style New York pizza. If you come during happy hour it's only 3 bucks for a huge slice. Lots of flavors available and the seating area has a nice vibe. Owners and employees are really nice.

Yelp
My quest for New York style pizza led me here while I spent the summer working in Salem. While I have been pretty disappointed with a lot of local pizza places in the Willamette Valley, I was pleasantly surprised by SFNY. While not quite the same as the big delicious foldable slices on the east coast, this pizza comes pretty close. The crust is maybe a touch too thin, but it's extremely tasty. The sauce is also flavorful, there's just enough cheese, and the toppings are evenly distributed. The pizza is also a nice big size. I haven't experienced any unusual amounts of grease on the pizza, but good cheese usually creates a bit of grease on top. The pizza is a bit pricey... New York City prices in an area that definitely shouldn't have them. However, for a taste of good pizza it's worth it.
google avatar

Jenny W.

Yelp
Friendly staff, delicious pizza, just wish you could order online and have it delivered.

Yelp
Pizza tasted OK, but as the name of the place is Straight From New York Pizza, I was expecting a more NY-style taste... That was disappointing. Better than a chain pizza (and the large is definitely HUGE), but did not live up to my NY pizza expectations. The above isn't why I rated it 1* though... the customer service (or, more specifically, lack there-of), is what's really driving the 1* rating... So we're visiting family that lives in Salem. Father-in-law places pizza order (and does so on speaker phone). Pizza place answers, asks if they can put him on hold. No big deal, but they simply put the phone down and we wait, and wait, and wait while we hear noise in the background but no-one coming back to phone. After a few minutes, thinking they forgot about us and we'll call back -- then all of a sudden, bam, they finally get back to take our order. Order was for 2 large pizza's, one of which only half should have cheese. He stated it VERY clearly, and the person taking the order repeated it back exactly! Yes, no-cheese may be quite uncommon, but if you request your pizza be made a certain way and the person taking the order REPEATS it back to you, presumably they not only physically heard, but psychologically listened... Father-in-law goes to get the pizza and brings it back home. Pizza's again are HUGE! Guess what -- FULL cheese... Father-in-law calls up pizza place (again on speakerphone) to voice his frustration. AGAIN he is put on hold (after the person answers phone, asks him what he wants to order, and only THEN, after realizing it's a complaint...) person eventually comes back and is completely apathetic about the whole situation. No real apology... They did state they'd take his name and put it on file to offer a free pizza, but didn't seek his last name, so who knows if that "free" pizza will truly be there...
google avatar

Roger S.

Yelp
1 slice of pizza here is the size of a small pie at most places. Maybe 1/2 to 2/3 of any small pie. And it's sold by the slice. Good pie .
google avatar

Alberto L.

Yelp
definitely above average, and praise goes to the crust, which is light and crunchy, but not too too thin! we had been for a whole pie before, and it was huge, this time we had a few slices (5 in 2), which were absolutely filling they didn't invent anything, but I like both their pizza and this location we'll be back 100%

Kadee A.

Yelp
Service was great. Pizza is good. Just a little disappointed. The first time I ordered a pizza it was 100 percent amazing. Had it delivered, super happy. The second time I opted for pick up and it wasnt the same. The crust was thick and super doughy. I wanted the thin fold over type of New York style they advertise. If I wanted a thick crust I would have ordered domino's. Cheat meal was not worth it.
google avatar

Sara S.

Yelp
Excellent pizza, wonderful, clean environment, and friendly down to earth wait staff. I especially like that you can half/half any pizza and get pesto sauce and red sauce on the same pizza. Whether you want to grab a quick bite or hang out with friends, ANY of the locations will serve you right.
google avatar

Taylor C.

Yelp
Great pizza without the long wait - what more could you want? I've never dined in, only ordered delivery, so I can't speak to the restaurant itself but absolutely no complaints here
google avatar

Nancy N.

Yelp
I don't like ALL pizza. But I went here with a couple of friends and they had a great atmosphere I like the location and "spaceyness." I had two ginormous slices ( :] ). Pepperoni was fantastic! I also grabbed a few honey pkgs on my way out... haha
google avatar

Wade C.

Yelp
Served my wife pizza slices while I waited for my pizza to cook. Should serve a couple at the same time. Cashier could have more of a personality. Gluten free pizza was delicious
google avatar

Ryan P.

Yelp
Went on a Thursday evening during dinner time. Place was nearly empty. Pizza in display had clearly been in there for a while, would have ordered a fresh pie if their only size wasn't 18"... Tossed a display slice of pepperoni in an industrial toaster oven. Pizza was decent, probably quite good when it's fresh. Fairly good deal; two good size slices and a soda for around $6. It would be a good place if they offered more than just their big size and the service was friendlier.
google avatar

Julia S.

Yelp
I'm not the biggest fan of pizza, but one night my mother and I were craving some. We ordered a combo I think, on the location off of Commercial street. I'm not sure if this is exactly what New York style is, but I was not loving this pizza. It just tasted a bit odd, either it was the sauce or the cheese, not sure. I might give this place another shot, but I'd rather have a big thick cheesy crust rather than a thin mediocre slice of pizza. May try again in the future!
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Not the best pizza I've ever had, but it's the best in Salem. They were fast with our order, and the atmosphere was calm and relaxing. Plenty of pizza varieties available, and couple of beers on tap and in bottle. The pizza sauce is really good, and it's got a delicious crust.
google avatar

Jacob Z.

Yelp
A puzzling combination of cold pizza and hot sprite. I came in at 12:10 pm and the place was dead, pizza served cold, no ice in soda fountain, employees arguing in spanish while a guy brings in ice bags and sets them on the counter, I was waiting for them to fill ice machine but it doesn't happen, serious management problems here, avoid.

Moriah W.

Yelp
Usually I have great experiences here. Tonight I went in and ordered a salad, and a slice of pizza. The man working the counter was not friendly, annoyed with my presence and clearly isn't happy in his position. He dropped the pizza serving utensil and I was curious to see how he'd clean it so I peaked around the corner. He proceeded to walk to the back, rinse it off with just water, and used his unclean hands to wipe it off. I've worked in food service and I know for a fact that is not sanitary. Regardless! The food is always amazing and typically, it's clean and neat inside the restaurant.
google avatar

Missy W.

Yelp
I LOVE SFNY Pizza! What I LOVE even more is that they DELIVER to my house on the other side of town! I love that I don't have to order from Pizza Hut or Dominos when I want a quality pizza and don't want to get out of my pjs on a hungover Sunday afternoon. :) There isn't much of a selection when it comes to pizza delivery in Salem. SFNY is a great option its always hot and fresh tasting.
google avatar

Sami B.

Yelp
The pizza is amazing, huge slices for such a great price and a nice selection of beers as well. My favorite is the chicken bacon ranch. I'd definitely recommend for a fun, easy place to eat; they don't take forever getting the food ready because they have it already made and oven bake it right there to heat it up.
google avatar

Caitlin T.

Yelp
Great pizza! Love the lunch deals, every slice we've tried we enjoy. Recommend this place to anyone looking for a slice or two and a relaxing place to eat.
google avatar

Susan L.

Yelp
We always loved their pizza. They had all new workers and I think they may have been sold. We ordered two pizzas and both had very little sauce and cheese. I could've bought a better pizza at little caezar. I won't return to this location because their pizza SUCKS!!!
