Great spot to stop in and visit for a drink. Not sure why there are so many bad reviews for the bartender(s), we found them knowledgeable and polite. The partnership with Pittsburgh Sandwich Society is a great one; the smash burger was divine, so good we finished the first ones and had to order seconds. It's everything you need it to be, greasy and melty with fresh veggies on top. The setup is a little strange with the fact that you order through your phone and never see anyone, but I would guess that's how they keep from needing a full wait staff. We still tipped based on the awesomeness of the burger alone. Lots of seating outside, a little too hot during the day but would be awesome on a cool evening. Street parking is ideal. Brews were solid. Will be back for sure

Great food and great beers! We love the outdoor area and always have a great time when we come here!!

Google
Great beer and some seltzer choices which is great for people who love seltzers, the burgers were so good and fresh with fries. I think going here during warmer weather is best, have a lot of space outdoors and only a little indoors. Had games for kids to play, perfect place for parents to enjoy a meal with good drinks and burgers while kids play outside with games they have there. Staff really nice. Parking is a little hard due to location.

First time here. Nathan, the bartender, was a consummate professional. I was impressed with his rapier wit and charming sarcasm. He has nice shoes and smelled neutral. If you don’t like this guy it’s you, not him. I bet all of his exes still like him and their parents still invite him to Thanksgiving. He showed me pictures of his dog and the figurines he collects. That was nice. He said he liked my hat and that was also nice. He told a joke about Coors Light being like having marital relations in a canoe because they’re both effin’ close to water. That made me laugh, which was also nice. Beers were good enough that I’m leaving a review at 9:30pm on a Wednesday. Burger was good, came out in 15 minutes. Nathan should go get a job at that Italian place I slagged off in my last review. Didn’t use the washroom but I’m sure it’s tastefully decorated and doesn’t smell worse than average.

Google
Nice outdoor seating with plenty of room to chill and have a brew. Very close off the river trail so if you're running or biking this is a good spot to stop. Solid line up of beers on tap, they differently have some funky ones if that is up your alley. As far as food, they have the Pittsburgh Sandwich Society on site.

Google
Right near the start of the bike trail but best to go by car as very busy intersection to try and cross with bikes. Great variety in beer choices. Some unique ones worth trying that are not overpowering. Spacious outdoor area. Limited shade coverage. Food truck on site was great (The Sandwich Society).

Google
Both the food and the beers we tried were underwelming. Burgers were good, but the⁰ chicken club was overcooked and tough. Fries were cold, soggy and oddly served with potato chip crumbs in them. Beer was fine (funky dory saison and zomp ipa) but unremarkable, especially for a place advertising unique brews. Probably won't go back. On the upside, it does have a nice outdoor area and trendy vibes for a hangout spot.

Google
The beers are good and they rotate regularly so its always worth checking back if they don't have anything your speed that day. The Pittsburgh Sandwich Society food is also fantastic so its worth swinging by just for that.

Yelp
3/15/25 Ate List: Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich - 7.4 Fries - 7.2 Pittsburgh Sandwich Society kills it! Strange Roots is a great and a pleasant "nice weather" spot to me. On a tough corner in Millvale, but worth going out of the way for. Sandwich was delicious. Have gotten it before and will be getting it again. Hot but not really burning heat. The Chicken had a nice crisp to it and the bun held up a little better than most. Fries were addicting. The aioli is worth getting in addition. As a pair, both items together felt like a perfect ying and yang.

Yelp
We love this place, especially in the summer. Get the Sceamin Tangerine -- a perfect wheat beer with actual squeezed tangerines -- and the best burger in PIT, the In-N-Aht, a double smashed burger that is an elevated version of that fast food chain in Cali. It is seriously the perfect summer meal! You can thank me later.

Yelp
This was a nice surprise and great outside seating when the weather is nice. We once tried a bleu cheese beer here. It was better than expected. I do really enjoy trying the unusual beer. Also they had Millie's ice cream sandwiches for a nice little snack.

Yelp
We have been coming here for a while. We came when it was Draai Laag a few times and more often since it became Strange Roots. We had gone to Grist House so decided to stop quickly by Strange Roots for a quick draft and maybe something to take home. They seem to have a pretty good variety on tap typically. Some sours and some IPAs with a few Belgians and maybe a stout scattered in. Some of their sours and farmhouse style are good. We tend to wind up here for the Belgians (can be hard to find in Pittsburgh) and stouts. On this visit we were able to get a Wee Heavy and a stout. Both were tasty. There was no one inside and it was a nice night so we went ahead and sat down outside. They have a good amount of outdoor seating space. Sometimes I find the bartenders here to not necessarily be welcoming or friendly. They don't jump up with information or suggestions. Also a pet peeve of mine is way too often they only are serving in plastic cups. I get it when places are really busy or with people playing games outside but I just want my beer (especially Belgians) out of real glass. We took home with us a Belgian tripel and a barleywine. The barleywine Yodeler is always delicious. Bottles prices are reasonable. I do wish they would keep a taplist online (they do sometimes post to social media) as sometimes it's a particular beer that really gets us to stop. We look forward to more tasty beers in the future.

Yelp
I stopped by here on a Thursday night last month with a couple of former coworkers for drinks. While I had been to this location for beer before whenever it was Draai Lang, I had not been in its current incarnation of Strange Roots. This brewery is located in Millvale right near 28. It has a large outdoor space complete with string lights and plenty of seating. Then the inside consists of more seating as well as a bar. On the night that we were there they had a DJ. That meant that it was incredibly difficult for my friends and I to talk and so even though it was incredibly cold out, we migrated outside after our first round. For my first beer on this evening I decided to go with the tart burst. It was described as a sour ale conditioned on blueberries and cherries. While I could taste the somewhat muted flavor of the berries, I would not have called this beer a sour. With that being said, it was a solid beer and I had no problem drinking it. Then for my second round I went with their gose. It was a good representation of the style as it had a good flavor and tasted dry. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. While I was not a huge fan of the DJ, there seemed to be enough people there enjoying him and I would like to try more of their beers.

Yelp
Technically......... this establishment doesn't have food, but next door is the Pittsburgh Sandwich Society. Excellent!!! The beer list was on the short side, but well executed. They had several other option aside from beer, which is unusual for a brew pub. If I had one criticism, I'd like to see a broader beer offering. We sat at the bar and Pete was our bartender. It wasn't busy and Pete spent extra time with us. He is very knowledgeable about their products and was great explaining their Spring and Summer events. I'm looking forward to returning in the late Spring and early Summer for several events they'll be hosting!

Yelp
We stopped in one night on our way to Grist House to grab a bite to eat and a beer, but we didn't end of eating because they only had a food truck with zero vegan options. Bro, I really wanted to try those tofu tacos. Damn it! Do you not serve the food menu listed anymore or do specifically only use food trucks now? The location itself is awesome and all the renovations they have done are super cool. Parking is kind of scarce considering it's mostly street parking, but we parked at the Dollar General parking lot because there were zero parking for customers only signs, but I would have went in and bought something, ha ;) Tbh, it was a busy night in Millvale with Grist House having a charity event and being elbow to elbow there. Their beer garden is super cool and the murals too, but the only downfall this place had the day I visited was there is only one spot to get beer. Kind of made no sense considering you have a huge outdoor sitting area. Why not have an open window for the outside patrons to walk up to or a spot outside to serve like Grist and many of the other breweries locally? The guy working the taps wasn't very friendly and seemed kind of agitated and it wasn't even that busy. I would have bought more beers if not for him. My guy it's your only job to be helpful and smile. You work in *customer* service. Lol. The beer I had was good and I'll check you out again the next time I'm in town. I really wanted those tofu tacos. I hope you have them the next time I visit or at least offer offer something vegan like a chik'n sandwich and not just a veggie patty with no vegan cheese option. Isn't this a hipster spot? Come on man!

Yelp
The Sour Beer was a 5 Star. The Hot chicken sandwich was a WTF. Could not even eat the chicken . It was tough, chewy and not edible. Left over , re-cooked , then re-cooked again. Never in my life did I have such a terrible chicken sandwich. Definitely go for the beer, well worth it.

Yelp
We came here on a chilly night and sat indoors, but I will be back in the summer to enjoy the patio. It's so cute. The staff was so friendly, the bartender let us sample a few before we chose. The beers are all really interesting and fun. We only had beer but the food looked amazing. I will come back again!
google avatar

Marissa W.

Yelp
Strange Roots is such a pleasant experience! They have a small parking lot but street parking is available as you head toward Millvale. They have a large patio with shade and nice tables. They managed to create privacy and make you forget you are right off the highway and exit ramp. The bar staff is lovely and happy to let you sample. I was pleasantly surprised that they had many non-sour options. The kolsch was crisp and perfect for a summer day. My husband loved the lime lager. The happy hour pricing didn't hurt either. I also love that they have Pittsburgh Sandwich Society in house!

Yelp
This was a really fun *dog friendly* spot with plenty of outdoor picnic table seating. I enjoyed the beer selection but honestly I wasn't blown away. What really took the cake was the Pittsburgh Sandwich Society! WOWOWOW. I followed those guys on instagram for a while and I was so excited to see they're set up right inside of Strange Roots. We really enjoyed our beer and our chicken sandwiches. The burgers were really tasty too! If I lived here, this would definitely be a go-to spot for me.

Yelp
Some of the more interesting and fun beers I've had yet. We came here around 5pm on Thursday. We are still awkward and weird about when and where to de-mask but the staff made us feel comfortable and assured us it was our choice. We found a seat outside, we ended up moving from the original seat to a seat that had a better seat to table height ratio. We got 4 beers, three fruited and one wild. They were all delicious. The screaming tangerine was a delightful fruit beer that still tasted like, well, beer! The koleaid was like grape juice and my partner loved it. My personal favorite was the houbon de coupage (sorry if I misspelled). It was fun and complex. We had a lovely time!

Yelp
Went here for trivia last night.GreT place.Triviacwas outside I. A comfortable space.Picnic tables that wee spaced so you weren't crowded.Good from Pgh Sandwich Society was very good.I had a jr.cheeseburger and it was a good size and very good.Beer choices also were excellent.

Yelp
Excellent experimental flavors. Has food truck on site to care with amazing burgers. Lots of outdoor seating.
google avatar

Erin B.

Yelp
Strange Roots is one of my absolute favorite spots in Pittsburgh! As a huge fan of sours, there's really nowhere like Strange Roots. Often, breweries will only have a handful of experimental/sour ales, but here you have tons of amazing options. The menu rotates -- I've been several times and there's always something new. The outdoor seating is great for summer time. If you love sours or unique beers, you absolutely must give Strange Roots a try.
google avatar

Abby K.

Yelp
Great selection of beers. There is always something unique to try! The outside seating is great for warmer evenings, and the inside area is small but inviting.
google avatar

Joshua C.

Yelp
Patrick, who took my order never smiled or looked happy to be there and did his best to make me feel stupid when I asked a question about the draft list. The other server was courteous but I didn't catch her name. The space was really cool, the patio could benefit with heaters, food was great, beer was alright.
google avatar

Yelp
Really enjoyed my first visit to Strange Roots. They have a great patio and expanded even further to accommodate more people. Their inside is pretty small but a good sized bar and a nice selection of beers- not just sours! I got the IPA and it was delicious, nicely balanced. They have food trucks every day and evening. I had tacos when I was there and they were super authentic and delicious. Nice to support a local business x2.

Yelp
I wasn't expecting to find some of the best tacos I've had in Pittsburgh when I stopped by this brewery last night, but now I know that Strange Roots delivers awesome beers AND awesome tacos! It was our first time visiting and we had no expectations aside from the fact that we had seen their great patio before in passing. While it was too cold to sit outside, the interior is spacious with comfortable lighting and some fun games to play if you're feeling like it. We tried Sour Ginger (good but less sour and more wheat-y in its aftertaste than I like) and the Bourbon Barrel la Pienture ( which way exceeded my expectations and was AMAZING. Don't get it for the bourbon taste, since it's just a hint, but its sour and fruity tones were off the charts.). Both beers were great and we definitely would have gotten seconds if we had more time to spend. As for the tacos - on Tuesdays you can get two tacos for $4.50, and these are miles above the quality you usually find at taco nights around town. The Bomb Mi tacos were flavorful, spicy, and the meat was juicy. We were less blown away by the Jerk Chicken, but it was still tasty. 10/10 will definitely drink beer and eat tacos here again.

Yelp
This was the first stop on our rainy day in the Burgh Brewery Tour. I've driven past here many times and loved the outdoor seating area. The interior is dimly lit and has a great vibe to it with a huge mural and wooden walls. The place was packed and pretty loud but not ear splitting and we were quickly greeted and redirected to a different table because the one we chose was so wobbly, he likened it to dining on a cruise ship. Ahoy DRAAI LAAG brewery men! Permission to sample some beers? Once we got setup at our new table, we chose some beer and some food. The beers are all pretty sour which I typically associate with gose style beers (which I think are German sour beers) but they call theirs wild, I believe, and these are more French and Belgian. I am obviously not a beer snob but I took time to ask our server about this and he explained it although I may have butchered his technical brewing explanation. We also tried to ask him about the pending change to this brewery - a new name -and we wanted to understand what that meant to the beers they might add to their offerings. He was not very helpful in that regard. The new brewery will be called Strange Roots Experimental Ales but we have no idea what new brews will be brewing, folks. The food was very good. Surprisingly good, actually, because no one was eating in the entire place. We wavered on whether or not to order for several minutes and then decided, why not? Boy, am I glad we did! We tried the smoked pork tacos that come with a little pickled onion, lime, cilantro, and cotija cheese. Super flavor profile. We devoured ours in a short order but left a mess since we split the two tacos and they never brought a plate or anything to split them. Mucho messio! The beers were good too. I have been wanting to try more of the sours and this was a great selection. It takes some getting used to, for sure, but there is a beauty in these sours that you don't find in other styles of beer. If you are interested in trying some, the sampler of three for $12 is the way to go. You get a nice pour of each and can easily share them. Our favorite was the Wit but the raspberry was pretty good too. The only issue we had, and this is sort of a big one, was the service. It's a strange setup if you are not familiar with the place. There are tables or bars you can sit at but the servers are also the bartenders (at least it appeared that way) so when the place gets a big group, all servers on deck to pour beers and forget about asking your server for something. I was ready to leave at one point but my "better half" wanted to stay so we did. So you don't really have an assigned waiter. They need to tell you that or change their model to have actual servers. It's annoying when you don't understand their service model and results in a less than stellar experience. It all made sense when we asked for our check and he asked if we started a "tab."

Yelp
Strange Roots has been one of our favorite Pittsburgh breweries for years, but with the new beer garden and partnership with Pittsburgh Sandwich Society they have taken it up another notch! The new beer garden is doggo friendly and provides much needed seating. The beers are tasty as always, we especially enjoy the sours that they are known for. The tartburst series is always a good bet. The beer menu is constantly changing, so there is always something new. As for food, I'm still dreaming about the In-N-Aht Burger, way better than the real thing. The fries, both loaded and plan were tasty, but I'd probably stick with the original in the future.

Yelp
It was a Relaxing environment with friendly staff! The sour beer was very good. Definitely sour! You can order food here as well.

Yelp
We added Draai Laag to our list of breweries to visit due to its close proximity to other breweries. I unlike my husband was not aware they only serve sour beers. I knew they had unique beers but was not prepared for was they were all sours. First off, I thought their taproom was very lovely. If it were not such a nice afternoon out we probably would have just opted to stay at the bar. Modern and industrial, so decor scores. Next, the bartender was extremely friendly and spoke to us in length about their beers and their story. I love it when we go to a brewery and the people serving the beer have something more to say to you besides "what can I get you? Or here is your check." He was very informative and gave the space a welcoming vibe. Since I really did not think I would like any of their beers I opted to go with the Black Dino, because they brew it with coffee and it had the highest ABV of all the offerings. Heck if I have to drink a beer I probably will not like then I am going hard. After we paid, we headed outside to check out their courtyard. The courtyard was cute. Many high tops, picnic tables, plants, and even though it is close to the highway, had a great pavilion coverage and a trendy horizontal fence that gave it a secluded private feeling. I loved how the outside looked. I was not a huge fan of the dead air that hung around. I wish they had at the least some kind of music playing or other source of entertainment to soak up traffic noise. As we sipped our beer, I noticed their menu looked great. I was getting hungry and was on the move to order some food but we just could not enjoy our beers. My husband ended up dumping his out about half way through. I on the other hand am against alcohol abuse and finish every drop at a fast as I could pace. This place is adorable. The people were friendly and informative. They have a delicious sounding menu and a lovely space, but we came for beer and I just was not a fan. If you are, you will love it I am sure.

Yelp
Oh, my goodness. I LOVED this place! Draai Laag originally popped onto my radar last June at a Philly Beer Week event. I stopped in for one glass and ended up trying all the pours available over the course of a few hours. It was awesome. So, obviously, I knew that if I ever made it across the state, this brewery would be a must. I visited around 9 p.m. on Thursday with a friend, and the tasting room wasn't too busy. Quiet, dimly lit. Gorgeous outdoor patio with string lights, but thunderstorms rolled in, so we stayed indoors. Each staff member was super accommodating and friendly. By the time we left at closing, I had purchased a shirt and two bottles of Blue Briar (soooo good! -- blueberry sour), in addition to a flight and delicious pork nachos + brisket tacos off their food menu. Artisan ice cream sandwiches from a local vendor are also available. Highly rec the rhubarb brown sugar! You really can't go wrong with any of the funky pretty brews here, but my favorite is probably the Red Briar. It's a sour with raspberries, and it's just delightful. Their prices don't break the bank, either. All told, we spent less than $100 -- and that's including the takeaway purchases. I'll certainly return if I ever find myself in Pittsburgh again. Hope to see more distribution to Philly, too!

Yelp
Stopped by to meet a friend. Nice place with an outdoor area, some if it covered. It was a busy day but service was fast and some interesting beers. There is a nice selection of beers. Tried a sour and really enjoyed it with my sandwich from Pittsburgh Sandwich Society that is on the premises.

Yelp
Oh man- we were here for the grand opening of Pgh sand which society. You can't beat a great beer with an in and aught burger from Pgh SS. We posted up here for most of the evening to try all the different beers on tap! What a great night

Yelp
Parking in the gravel lot out front not as plentiful as it might be. I counted myself lucky to get a spot there and not be hunting a parallel parking spot on the street. No table service in here but the food was solid and the beers good. Mostly sours, as pointed out by other reviewers. The furniture is a bit hard and I suspect it might be a bit cold during the winter. I like some padded furniture and carpeting when the temperatures drop, and Strange Roots is more industrial feeling than that. But you should be going here for the beer, and on that score, Strange Roots does not disappoint. I sampled their saisson sour which was very nice but ended up having their annual sour stout. I can't recall the name but it had 2019 in it. Very, very nice. Bartender was nice, if a bit overworked when a beer tour showed up! Good tunes and a pleasant vibe inside. It's not huge inside (the supplemental patio seating is probably great when the weather is good), so you might not find a seat if the parking lot is crammed full. I'll be back!

Yelp
We went here on a whim during our self-guided Pittsburgh Brewery tour. Another brewery hopper recommended it so we Ubered right over. This was probably one of my favorite stops. Their cherry and raspberry sours were delicious! They serve food but we didn't try any. I'd love to go back next Pittsburgh visit!

Yelp
The artwork is pretty cool but the customer service and food leave something to be desired ... The people taking our order appeared annoyed and gave us unsolicited advice when we went to use our taco coupon from Bingo night on Taco Tuesday saying "we should use it on another night since we would be getting a better value when the tacos are twice the price" which made no sense whatsoever since they are the exact same tacos. Background: their tacos are normally 10$ but they lower the price to 5$ on taco Tuesday, which I imagine is a busier time for them. I get that she would probably prefer we use the card on a less busy day ... that would actually be a more logical way of thinking and if so, she should put "except for taco tuesday" on the card ... but pressuring customers who already drove there to leave and come back on another day because it is busy (and because you value them less as customers because they are using a coupon) is just poor customer service. Why would we want to drive all the way home and then drive all the way back on another night just so we can feel like we are saving more money on the same exact tacos? Regardless, I didn't enjoy feeling like I had to justify myself and I felt she was making the situation unnecessarily stressful. They were also quite unfriendly when giving us the tacos. Thankfully, the water was self service so I didn't have to annoy them anymore than they already were. Anyhoo, we decided on the jerk chicken tacos which we ordered with the corn tortillas (since we like to feel authentic) ... unfortunately, we both felt that the taco didn't quite come together as a cohesive dish ... what I tasted most was the smoked chicken and pickled onions that conceptually you think might work but in practice the flavors just didn't jive well .. it almost felt like an insult to the subtle nuances of the ingredients... Also, I have to say I was quite disappointed with what they wrongfully labeled as "mango chutney" since it appeared to be more of a bottled mango sauce that did not blend together with the rest of the taco whatsoever rather than a chunky fresh mango salsa (which was the main reason I chose that taco). There was also this very strange plasticky or nail polishy flavor that I found off putting in the taco but I had a hard time figuring out where it was coming from. I still finished the taco nonetheless.

Yelp
I honestly hadn't heard much about Strange Roots especially since I tend to stick to the southside or east end. However, once I found out about their Thursday night bingos I had to give it a try. A group of three friends and I went on a beautiful day. I was instantly charmed by the enchanting beer garden. The interior is small but cozy. It was darker and had a more intimate feel. We grabbed a table outside and were able to play bingo. It was cute and entertaining. I was so excited to try their beer after reading some glowing yelp reviews. I was not disappointed! I must say I am a fan of sour beers so Strange Roots was just the right place for me. I ordered the red briar and would definitely order it again. My whole party was satisfied with their drinks. They had such unique flavors I can't wait to go back and try more!

Yelp
Great spot with tasty brews! Strange Roots has quickly become my favorite brewery in Pittsburgh. I love sour beers, and each time I've visited they have had at least 3 sours on tap to choose from. My favorites have been their various Tartbursts. What I like: + Lots of sour varieties, but they also have other solid choices for the IPA crowd + Excellent beer garden. There is a great outdoor space with a mix of high tops and picnic tables. A portion of the outdoor space is partially covered + Staff are friendly and helpful when deciding between beers + They offer half pours if you don't want to fully commit to a beer + The vibe is very casual. The outdoor space is dog- and family-friendly + Attracts a friendly crowd. When it's been busy, we have been able to share a picnic table with another party of 2 + Great food. Pittsburgh Sandwich Society just opened up at the Millvale location Possible cons: - The indoor seating is small, which may make it hard to get a table during the cold weather months

Yelp
If you like sours this is your place! They have a great variety that range from hoppy to light and with their sampler options it is easy to find one that you love! I have had great interactions with the staff members, very friendly and helpful. Their system for waiting tables includes allowing the customer to change the card on the table to signify when you need service or your check. As they put it "so we don't bother you too much or too little" -- I thought that was great! It let us sit and talk uninterrupted, but also got us service promptly when needed. We didn't get any food, but the menu was interesting to me. If we didn't already have dinner plans I would have tried something. I'm looking forward to returning in the warm weather, the outdoor space is gorgeous and I'm sure will be great on a warm evening.

Yelp
Absolutely fell in love with this little taproom! The parking wasn't the greatest, but parking and walking a little isn't impossible. My boyfriend and I went to Strange Roots on a Friday around 6pm. It wasn't crowded at all and we sat right at the bar. The employees were SO nice and attentive. We didn't get the any food this time around being that we ate beforehand, but they have a neat menu. Hopefully I'll get a chance to taste something from it next time! (PS they have ice cream sandwiches!!) The beers were delicious - There wasn't one that I didn't like! They switch out pretty frequently, too. Just make sure you have a taste for sours!
google avatar

Casey M.

Yelp
A couple good sour options if you are looking for that like I am. The beer garden is great, it was definitely less crowded than their Millvale neighbor Grist House. The addition of Pittsburgh Sandwich Society is big plus. Had one of the best burgers in Pittsburgh there. There are a few parking spaces but not many but no matter how far you park in Millvale it won't be a long walk.

I've been meaning to come to this place for a while. I ended up visiting Draii Laag for their beer release event for The Plague. My husband and I ended up coming in when there were less than 100 bottles left, fortunately we were able to snag three after The Keg had kicked. Anyways the plague was delicious. It is a sour beer with made with fermented berries that was aged on French Oak Petite Sirah barrels. It was strong and delicious. I also ended up trying out the Cru which was very refreshing and complex. We ended up taking advantage of nice weather and had our beers outside and noticed that there were two food trucks. The sitting area was plentiful and it was very much a beer garden style decor with a lot of picnic tables and strung up lights. We also befriended the brewery cat, Simon. The indoor area had a very much a year European feel to it, very cozy and had warm Decor overall. Excellent place to have a beer, I look forward to returning.

Yelp
Very disappointed. I have been wanting to visit this place for months. Finally it was on my list of places to visit. We finally make it here after they open at 5 PM. I walk inside and they're only doing take out only. Umm update your facebook or website letting others know this. What a turn off and I never had an opportunity to try the beer and do not know if I will even attempt to try to go here again. :(

Yelp
I do miss the Belgian beers that Draai Laag used to specialize in as so few breweries here do any Belgian styles. I'm also not particularly into sour beers. However, I appreciate the creativity and range of beers that Strange Roots does, so I'm still able to find ones that I like. They have a nice spacious outdoor patio. This was the first bar I visited during COVID times and I felt very safe there as it wasn't crowded and the tables outside were very spaced out. You had to go inside to order drinks but there was no line or crowding inside. They don't really have food but had some chips or nuts as snacks.

Yelp
I went to Strange Roots on Saturday. I've been wanting to try this place for a month since we went to the Food Truck park. It looks very cute from the road! Anyways we came for a drink on Saturday. They have an amazing outdoor area with plenty of tables and its kid friendly!!! Love anywhere that I can be comfortable bringing my daughter. The bar is inside as well as several other tables. I tried 3 different beers and I really wasn't a fan of any of them. Not their fault they just weren't my style. They do have a menu, we didn't try any food as we had just come from dinner. I would be willing to go back and try it. It looked like they also have an event coming up called Taco Mania which seems fun. They have a small parking lot. It was full when we were there but were able to find a spot within a couple of blocks.

Yelp
I am a pretty serious Belgian beer fan, so when my husband, our two friends, and I did a brewery crawl in September, I was very excited that Draai Laag would be our first stop. Since it was a beautiful, cool evening, we got to sit outside on Draai Laag's pretty gravel patio. I told our outgoing waiter/bartender to just make up a sampler for me, and he brought me the R2 Koelschip, Haviken, and Simon Girty. I thought all of the beers were tasty, but my favorite (and the table's favorite actually) was the Simon Girty. It took us too long to check out Draai Laag and I really hope that we come back sooner than later and don't wait for the weather to turn warm again.

Yelp
I had so many people recommend Draai Laag to me that the first nice day this summer I had to get there. I'm a huge sour beer fan and everyone has said this is the best place for that since it is their specialty. I ended up trying most of the beers and I have to say this is definitely one of my favorite breweries. Each one was so unique and so flavorful. It's not often that I go to a brewery and have so many options to choose from that I actually like. Usually it's 1 or 2 options. Other times there is nothing that I like. After hanging out for a bit I decided to get a order of the tacos and the nachos. The tacos were extremely good but the nachos weren't my favorite. I am however a nacho snob and have high expectations so for someone else they would probably be very good. I would have liked to see a little more toppings though. All in all, I had a great visit and I can't wait to go back very soon!

Yelp
01/03/18 I'm giving this place 4 stars because of the women that accommodated our party of close to 15 people. It's a small space and the norm is to walk up to the bar and order, however, due to our size, the staff was sure to come around the table to take our orders which was very much appreciated! For a lot of us, it was our first time at Draai Laag. They have menus placed around the place that list their food items and beer choices but on the wall is where they list their beers in depth (notes, ABV, etc). If you love sours this is definitely your place. Unfortunately, I don't like sours at all but that didn't stop me from giving them a try so a beer flight was in order. The flight is 3 5oz. pours of your choice for $12, not bad at all. I went with the Relic (Which is the closest to a hoppy beer you'll get), the Pomegrenade, and Atomic Pomme. I really enjoyed the Relic and didn't care for the rest (like I said, not a sours kinda gal) but my friends loved their choices. The decor of the place is super cool, looks like it would be a pub in Vikings or GOT. What's nice is that they have outdoor seating with lights that would be perfect in the summer. It's definitely a neat spot to check out if you haven't been!

Yelp
Lovely shaded picnic tables and delicious variety of brews. Good vibes! I particularly enjoyed the 910 mule on a hot day, and the boilermaker was also tasty. Will come back!

Yelp
So I slept on Strange Roots for too long. Being a beerhead in Pittsburgh means that you have a lot of options. Having my favorites picked out meant that I overlooked Strange Roots for a good bit. As a NEIPA lover, their selections didn't scream out to me. That being said, I tried a few sours and even the IPA that they had when my wife and I stopped by with a friend and they were all great. From a pure beer and ambiance perspective, I'd probably give the place 4 stars. Really nice patio area - not a ton of indoor seating. Very laid-back vibe. The inclusion of PGH Sandwich Society working the kitchen is what takes Stranges Roots over the top. I had been to their food truck numerous times and already thought that they have the best "fat kid" food in the city. I didn't think they could do it, but after visiting their permanent location at Strange Roots, the bar has been raised even higher. Burgers, fried chicken sammies, chopped cheese sammie, loaded fries, regular fries... you can't go wrong. A great spot to meet up with friends in a casual environment for brews and food that will cause yummy noises. Just do it.

Yelp
They always have a great selection of drinks which paired with delicious sandwiches from the Pittsburgh sandwich society makes for a great experience. Would recommend!

Yelp
I haven't been to many breweries to know what's a really good one or not, but from my experience here I was pretty satisfied and had a good time. I read other reviews before coming and all of them said that Draai Laag is known for "sour" beers, which I didn't understand what that was... so my friends and I ordered a flight of 3 different drinks - The Mark, Geestelijke, and Arsenal Cider. The Mark almost looked like red wine and tasted a bit like it. Geestelijke is known to be a more moderate level sour but I liked this one the best. My taste is more on the strong side so I liked the Geestelijke. The Arsenal Cider was okay... didn't really give the typical cider taste but it was okay. For food, I saw the Smokehouse Nachos in one of the pictures before coming and knew I had to order that. We ordered it with brisket and it was so yummy. The nacho chips were almost toasted which gave it a bit of a crunch and crispy taste. And my friend ordered the Bomb Mi sandwich with a side of cajun potato salad. We thought it was a pretty westernized version of a vietnamese banh mi sandwich. The cajun potato salad was delicious though. I think the best part about this brewery is the outdoor seating. There are hanging lights all around that would be lit up during sunset/night time, so definitely makes up the mood of the experience. The seating areas are just enough for small and large groups. And the service was really friendly overall. Would definitely come back again :)

Yelp
The inside bar had fun decor and was inviting. The staff was super nice. Between the group of 8 of us, we got 4 different beers and I tried all of them. They were all sours. I like some sour beers but I would have hoped for more variety. The beers I tasted were very good but just not my style. Very relaxing and roomy outdoor seating area. I'll be back for sure, real cool spot.

Yelp
This place is beautiful, first and foremost. Friendly staff, food trucks outside, AMAZING patio. On a beautiful day, this is the place to be. Let me just forewarn you that their specialty as far as beers go, are sour beers. If you are not a sour beer person, there may be some choices for you, but I wouldn't count on finding too many. Myself, I do like the occasional sour brew, so I enjoyed it. My favorite beer was their raspberry, which was the brewer's special. I am looking forward to the weather getting warmer in Pittsburgh, so I can hang out on the patio again.

Yelp
Everyone I have been here with two times within 1 week loves the beers I enjoyed their Pittsburgh sandwiches food .... This is a small inside with a nice size patio with a place for a band (which I hope to experience in the summer)

Yelp
BottomLine: Destination: most certainly Faves: food was fun, well thought out and executed. But, dah beeeeeeeeeeer... Perhaps you are familiar; this guy is twisted, somehow, dropped at birth or something. His ales inspired by Belgian, and they say, French counterparts, are the thing of dreams. Tastes unlike I've had anywhere else, and I've travelled. He gets yeasts from... Well, interesting places (you go ask him, or google it) and the result is extraordinary. Wine, bourbon barrels, hints or more of berries, sour, dry or sweet... All over the place. Complex but it comes off simple; I didn't find myself shaking my head, only enjoying and wanting more, More, MORE. Careful; octanes tend to be high. K very much enjoyed the Red Bri'ar, which is only a touch sweeter but right for her palate which is usually more inclined to the sweet. Don't be scared by the "framboise" in the description. LaPienture? A berry sour, but so much more. A craving. Try these before you commit to a whole one; flights w a bud to find what you like. These are weird in a magnificently wonderful way, but certainly not all will appeal. Ask your server, s/he will take time to discuss w you what will fit your taste. I want to say this place is pretentious but cannot justify that. Perhaps it's more some of the clientele? The servers are grounded, competent, friendly and otherwise awesome. Warm weather opens their beer garden, but the inside is warm and welcoming.
