17 of the Best Breweries in Richmond, Virginia | Eater DC

"Strangeways’ flagship location is a 8,400-square-foot production brewery with an oddity-stuffed barroom that boasts ample indoor seating, arcade games, and a festive, pup-friendly biergarten. The 36 rotating taps contain a diverse selection, including a consistent Nucleus Series of lagers, IPAs, and white and brown ales. At a Scott’s Addition location, Strangeways is conveniently nestled next to Smohk RVA BBQ." - Stephanie Ganz

I'm new to Richmond and stopped by while walking my dogs. Plenty of shaded seating on the side outdoors and the friendliest of people...I had someone offer to carry out a bowl of water for my dogs while I had 2 leashes and a beer in tow. Inside was cool and caters to military, teachers, locals--you name it. If the light beer I got (I'm on Keto for 60 days so a light beer already blows half my daily carbs) is any indication, I'm excited to return Memorial Day off my diet to explore all the sours, IPAs, and darker things I enjoy. I had the best light beer here I've ever had, though I rarely order light. 5 stars for sure!

If you're a fan of more sweet hard ciders and/or sour ales, stop into Strangeways Brewing. They sell all kinds of beer and the menu is organized by flavor. I ordered a flight of all the tart beers and found them unique. The Lucky Charms one is unique and tastes like the cereal. The cider is excellent and I loved the Razzle sour ale. So refreshing! The space is one big room with plenty of tables and a corner of games. Most of the games are broken and come with missing pieces. The service was efficient and friendly enough. Staff didn't seem thrilled to have three kids at the brewery, but alas.

Google
Enjoyable brewery! Staff were friendly and attentive, and it gave off similar vibes to the OG production facility location a short drive away. Beer is enjoyable with plenty of sizes and options to choose from. The blues band playing elevated the experience. Great place to hit when trying to knock out all the Scott’s Addition breweries.

In Richmond for a weekend getaway. Stopped into Strangeways and had great beers. By far, best part of the experience was Brian on the taps. Friendly, helpful and extremely nice guy. Would definitely recommend!

Google
One of the biggest beer selections we have ever seen, all made in-house. The dark beer section alone is larger than some breweries entire selection. Did 10 samplings and every one were amazing, some of the best beers we have had. Loved the artsy interior. They have a patio area for those warm days. Nice staff. Only downside is they only have gas station type food, like nachos from a dispenser and large soft pretzels. Don’t worry there is a great barbecue place right nearby.

They have the widest and most unique selection! Also the bartenders are amazing and patient with all questions. Lots of space and live music too. 💕

Google
Funky brewery in Richmond! Cool spot with good selection of beers! Had the Murder Hornet new England ipa and Mug Shot coffee porter. Both were very good. Really nice selection of imperial sours!

Google
Most excellent selection of beers! Just one shy of 40 offerings! We had 10 of them. Absolutely loved 8 out of 10 we tried. The other two were still tasty. Particularly loved Gnar Shredder and Murder Hornet. Red Sangria is awesome, too. Check out the pictures. Pretty gnarly place and simply fun. Katy served us and she was a blast! Gotta love their motto - "Think strange. Drink strange."

Yelp
Neat place to visit! Great selection of taps. Friendly bar staff! Strange taxidermy for sure;)

Yelp
This brewery is a really cool space. I enjoyed the decor and the layout. Unfortunately, I cannot recall what beer I ordered, and I cannot figure it out from the website's draught list. That said, I enjoyed this nameless/faceless beer. Ordering and paying were easy. No complaints.

Yelp
This fabulous brewery in several locations around and near RVA has something for everyone. My favorite is Scott's Addition Thursdays. "Free" Blues night from local artists. With over 36 beers on tap the choices are endless. I love that they have a sampler with 4-10 you chooseums. It's the perfect way to find what you like! Excellent friendly service, and plenty of seating. The giant pretzel is pretty good too.

Yelp
On a beer crawl in Richmond, I was looking for a place with bar food. I guess I picked the wrong location on the website because the Richmond location just had chips with salsa or cheese and a few other options. You do get a huge pile of nachos for $4. They have 36 beers on.tap. avoid the Welch jelly unless you love very sweet beers. You can get a flight of beers for $25 or buy samples at $3 each. worth a stop on a beer crawl because they have every style you can think of.

Yelp
I'm not a an of beer in general, but came in with co-workers one evening on a weeknight when they were completely dead. They have a lot of beer on tap, along with mead and other beverages. The guy working behind the counter was very helpful and offered up some suggestions of what I might like and I tried their root beer, which I believe was 8% and it was INCREDIBLE! Tasted like regular root beer, no malt or beer flavor to it at all! (The thing I hate about beer are the malt and hops flavors) The place is quite large inside and they offer some small bites, like chips and pretzels. This visit really surprised me in a positive way and I'll definitely return!

Yelp
Incredibly friendly service. Always happy to give you a taster. Their wheat beer is great, and their modifications to their base beer are very good. Would love to see more Stouts in the beer list!!

Yelp
A huge venue with a large tap list. There is ample seating and bar space. We tried the cranberry sour (amazing) and an IPA.

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
This was our first visit. Showed up at 12:32pm. Google says they open at noon, blinking light in window says 'OPEN' but door is locked and all chairs are stacked inside. Won't waste our time again coming back.

Dani D.

Yelp
Not the cutest atmosphere and pollen is taking over the outdoor benches but if you prefer a sweeter beer- Razzle Dazzle

Yelp
I love this brewery! The ambiance was very lively and they had live music. The service was great the guy helping was very nice and let my friends and I taste test different beers! I tried the lucky charms one and it was DELICIOUS! I loved it. I have gone there about 3-4 times and counting! They had a good crowd that night too!

Yelp
BLUF: Great selection of beers & seltzers. Amazing staff. Cool guest singers. Drinks (5/5): They have so many drinks on tap. I usually get the Lucky Charms drink; it's a sour base with a few Lucky Charms marshmallows in it which turns the drink green. I love the Wake Me Up Before You Gose! They also have some really good hard seltzers for those that like the lighter side without the huge amount of carbs. There are so many beers on tap that everyone will always find something they like. Service (5/5): The staff are always so nice & fun to chat with. They give good beer recommendations based on what you like too. But if you go enough, you won't need recommendations anymore! Ambiance (3/5): The ambiance is the weird part of this place. It's eclectic... to say the least. It has some taxidermy animals around the place & some weird signs. You'll also see some Bob Ross videos playing on the TVs. All that is fine, it's just it gets VERY loud when it fills to 30%+ capacity. It's 1 giant room with no sound dampening, so we usually sit outside at their picnic tables. TLDR: Amazing beers. Everyone in your group will find something they like here. Loud inside.

Yelp
The lady working the bar was very friendly and engaging and I like the vibe of this place. They have a huge beer selection as well. I wasn't a fan of the Flemish Ale at all but I'm sure they have other offerings more my speed. I plan on coming back here to try some other beers most likely.

Yelp
What a fun spot with a very large variety of decent tasting beers. You can choose your size to do beer flights (6oz) or have yourself a full pint. We tried a few and I'm a big fan of hazy IPAs, typically my go-to style beers and they've got some tasty ones to choose from at Strangeways. They even have a fun Lucky Charms sour, which I cannot even begin to describe to you other than it's actually pretty yummy, complete with the marshmallows as you can see in my photo. This photo also represents the size glasses you'd get for a tasting experience versus a full pint. Anyway, I recommend Strangeways with their creative beer names and wide variety of beers and fun, laidback atmosphere. Another awesome Scott's Addition brewery find.
google avatar

Yelp
Strangeways was an awesome brewery in Scotts Addition! They had outdoor seating and tons of room inside. The bartender was awesome and didn't mind explaining things or answering questions about flavor profiles. There was other people waiting but he took his time with everyone. The beers were laid out according to their style (sours, fruity, sweet, etc.) making it easy to choose. You could get anywhere from 2 to 10 sample beers. There was also a cool program where you could pay it forward and buy a beer for a teacher! Love this!!! There were jars of cute snacks available if you wanted! Cool spot to check out!
google avatar

Yelp
Only one person behind the bar slowed everything down. Other staff were inattentive or uninterested in serving the customers, focused on doing some of the tasks that could have waited for a lull. Among the snacks they sell are Reese's Pieces. They tasted stale, which I didn't know was possible. Very soft, as if they had been sitting in the container for too long. Beer (Murder Hornet) was fine. Music playing over the speakers was too loud to have conversation with the party. If you're not into the variety of sweet, tart, or fruity that Strangeways offers, the other breweries in the area are better for your standard roster of beer styles and ability to socialize with your companions.
google avatar

Yelp
These guys make great beer. Flights are up to 10 samples. My only issue is this: the animals on the wall are real, killed by the owner. Disgusting... If you have this terrible hobby keep it to yourself. Let the beer do the talking and keep your bizarre habit of killing monkeys etc. to yourself.

Yelp
Stood in line at the bar the other day waiting to order. There were two women at bar stations, one of whom was busy. The other one was just staring in a totally different direction than me, even though I was basically standing right in front of her. She didn't look at me, say anything, just looking off. No "next" or "can I help you" or anything. It was a strange experience. Finally the person behind me said maybe I should go up there, which I did. Still no words from her. I ordered my overpriced beer and didn't hear a peep out of her. Will absolutely NEVER go back. Will encourage my friends to do the same. There are several breweries within a nine iron of there that are actually friendly and less expensive.
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
My first time to this location. There's plenty of space indoors and out. The decor and theme is exactly the same as the original location with oddities sprinkled throughout. There's plenty of offerings and variety, even wine, cider and non alcoholic. Bar staff is friendly.

Yelp
We ordered tasters as they don't do flights. Ordered 7 beers. There is street parking around. Friendly staff. Lucky Charms Marshmallow Berliner Weiss - More sour than anything, but it was kind of cool they put some lucky charms In there which did taste better. Smuckers Jelly Berliner Weiss - Also more sour than anticipated and you don't really get thay jelly in there so thay was a bit disappointing. Albino Monkey White Ale Brewed with Spices - thos kind of tastes like a hegeweizen but it's not bad m. Lemonberry Überlin Berliner Weiss - least sour berkiner Weiss that we grabbed but yoy do taste the lemon which was pretty good. 17 Year Cicada Pineapple Hazy IPA - good pineapple taste and not as hoppy as a normal IPA but still kind of Hoppy Gourd of Thunder Imperial Pumpkin Ale - This was a little too heavy on the taste buds for me. The pumpkin was there but brewed with too many cloves. Helles Frozen Over Kolsch Helles Lager - Pretty light and easy to drink. There was a distinctive taste to it that I couldn't pinpoint but not bad. Overall not my favorite brewery but still a cool place to go to. There is large indoor and outdoor seating. There is a cool pay it forward for teachers that I really liked.

Yelp
Pretty good vibe overall for the place. However, one has to wait too long to give them your money.

Yelp
This was the first time we've been to the Scott's Addition location. We came on a Sunday...after our visit to Courthouse Creek Cider! Surprisingly Strangeways had probably not more than 4 groups of guests while we were there. It was great as the kids had an open area to walk LOL or run around! There were also a few arcade games. It's a really large spot... I actually really like it as it doesn't feel as crowded as the other spot off of Dabney. We obviously love our sours or else we would not be here. Not a fan of the wild sours but all in all we had a tasting and got some snacks. Strangeways will always be one of our go to's!!! Love that it is now an option in Scott's Addition too.

Yelp
I think Strangeway's did a great job on their Scott's Addition location. The interior is homey but with eclectic art (and also some dead animals) on the walls. I visited on their first day and everything seemed to be functioning without a hitch. They had plenty of guests inside and out, and it seemed to fit into the brewery-filled neighborhood perfectly. The Circuit is directly across the street. My only problem with Strangeway's is their beer. It's often mediocre. I wouldn't say it's bad, or gross, or subpar...it's just average. There's typically nothing special about it. Every now and again, you can find a gem, but it's not the norm. I wish they'd offer a mini flight option. As it stands, buying six pours will put you out ~$30. I'd rather there be a $10 flight option with smaller tasters. That way you could find what you like and not feel bad if you can't finish all of the pours. I'm sure this location will thrive like the other two. It's a worthy stop during a brewery crawl or if you happen to be nearby. I wouldn't detour for it though.

Yelp
Located in Scotts Addition in Richmond. Walling distance to the the ballpark. Their Selection of beers is worth checking out . Plenty of street parking

Gabriella V.

Yelp
Excellent service, clean bathrooms, and delicious beer. I am definitely coming back.

Yelp
My favorite of the 3 Strangeways. Great location in Scott's Addition. Great setup and love the drinks. I will come again? Yes!
google avatar

Maria G.

Yelp
So many good selections for beers. The music was awesome and over all a great atmosphere. Will make this a regular spot. The bartenders knew their stuff and recommend great selections. I had the cider monkey project grandmas apple pie and it was sooo good.
google avatar

Yelp
Always good service and their selection of beers is outstanding. Love the brewery decor also!
google avatar

Yelp
Of the many breweries around this walkable brewery utopia that is Scott's Addition our favorite was Strangeways. The interior space was dark, brooding, playful, and comfortable. The bar staff was friendly and welcoming and straightforward about the many options on tap. The Lücky Charms draught (with marshmallows) was a revelation! But all of the pours were terrific. Nice to be able to get most of the pours in sealed, pressurized crowlers, too. No pretentiousness, just great beer and good people.
google avatar

Amy C.

Yelp
Great selection in type of beers. Loads of sours. I tried the Lucky Charms, a marshmallow Berliner Weiss. Sweet and not a kick in your teeth south. Dad liked his Murder Hornets IPA. Was on the fence about Fighting Hellfish and Captive Unicorn. Easy place to grab a beer while we waited for a table at Lucky AF.
google avatar

Andrew D.

Yelp
I've always been a fan of Strangeways but my aversion to drinking and driving has kept me away from their other location. Now that they are open in Scott's Addition where I can walk there and stumble home, I expect to be a regular there. First the beer selection there is amazing. Unlike most of the other Scott's Addition breweries, they offer more than just your run of the mill IPA. Their variety is not only extensive but also high quality. The second big thing that sets them apart is they have TVs inside. With football season coming up, I want a place I can drink and stare at a tv where grown men are giving each other head injuries. The last thing I'll mention is that they serve all the food from Smohk which is awesome. Overall this is a great place and I am excited to come back
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
I stopped in here to try a flight while I waited for sushi carryout. I had zero expectations, but BOY, was I happily surprised. They have so many different types of beer and they're categorized so well..it is obvious the brewers have fun getting creative with the selection. The atmosphere was cool and funky. The taxidermy was unique and eye catching. I enjoyed the sour beer and the cranberry berlinner Weiss so much that I brought home some crowlers. I happen to live and work at a micro brewery in the shenandoah Valley so I got to talking with the bartender. Its obvious everyone there loves what they do and really believe in their product. I can't wait to go back next time I'm in town.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
this is a FRIDAY night. We came to see the band. They had ONE beer server, it took over 35 minutes to wait in line to get a beer. I will never come back here.
google avatar

Alex G.

Yelp
This place was awesome. We were waiting for a Lyft (as one does forever downtown) and so we stopped in here. I had Grandma's Apple Pie Cider, and it was one of the best cider's I have ever had. Hands down. They had other cider's as well, and if I had been given more time, I would have made my through all of them. However, when I am back in town, I will be back to do just that!
google avatar

Yelp
A good place for a good time. Good staff, food, and music. Lots of parking too. Go when nearby

Yelp
wow Ireland is the best! she was so sweet and really helped me decide what I wanted to drink. it was a fabulous ambience/vibe there and I was really excited to enjoy some yummy beer here!! met some fellow beer lovers and loved the conversation! highly recommend this location for some quality beer and good vibes!
google avatar

Christine B.

Yelp
This was my favorite brewery in Richmond. We went on a rainy day so ended up sitting inside but we had two couches and a table to ourselves in the back and felt safe. The number of beer options is amazing and you can get a huge flight. The lucky charms beer was a fan favorite that we ended up taking home but we really liked all the beers. Will definitely go back.
google avatar

Sara H.

Yelp
This is my favorite brewery to visit whenever I visit Richmond, VA! Not only are their beers creative & fun, but they are also SO DELICIOUS!!! My favorite 2 flavors are "Smuckers" and "Lucky Charms". Smuckers is the perfect sweet beer-- it's not too tart and is quite light and refreshing. Lucky Charms literally has the after-taste of marshmallows and is so much fun to drink. Staff is always friendly and the music is always on point. Good vibes all around & the outdoor patio is great!
google avatar

Taylor J.

Yelp
I've been looking forward to coming here for a really long time and it did not disappoint. I tried three beers and they were all yummy! The atmosphere is fun and they are doing a good job to keep safe in Covid. Will be returning.
google avatar

Danvy C.

Yelp
Visited while brewery hopping during a weekday. The brewery was spacious with both indoor and outdoor seating, had signs for social distancing and clean bathrooms. Although we weren't huge fans of the beers we tasted, we appreciated the fancy, gold-rimmed glasses and serving tray. We liked their stout, but thought the IPA's were nothing special. The location is great; walking distance to several other breweries and food spots.
google avatar

Renee C.

Yelp
Friendly bartender, fun decor, good vibes music to match and lift the gloomy weather outside, comparable prices. Beautiful glasses with a gold rim. Masks indoors, lots of outdoor seating. Some snacks available but Smokh is also right next door for more substantial food. I got a pour of Lucky Charms, a very sweet Berliner Weiss with a faint smell and aftertaste of toasted marshmallow that I enjoyed. My husband got the Oktoberfest feast which seemed a little diluted, but actually the flavor and light consistency would make it perfect easy drinking while celebrating an entire weekend of Oktoberfest. Will definitely be back soon!
google avatar

Cristy R.

Yelp
We were strolling along on our way to that "other" brewery but saw this place and the excellent Yelp reviews so we popped in to give it a whirl. Pretty outstanding beer choices here among the 27 or so taps. Most definitely recommend. (And we skipped that other one!)
google avatar

Keith M.

Yelp
I love this place. Great beer, friendly staff and a great BB-Q place next door. Keep up the good work!
google avatar

Marcus M.

Yelp
Lucky Charms 4.75% Beer tastes like a delicious bowl of Lucky Charms cereal. I'm not a beer guy but will be back here for this. This is the BEST KEPT SECRET IN RICHMOND!!!!

Chris E.

Yelp
What a cool place! Always has a better selection of beers than the other breweries in the area. The folks behind the counter are truly knowledgable and will help guide you to a choice that fits your taste. They frequently have live music which just adds to the fun vibe.
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
Best beer in Richmond. We got the flight, which is 10 beers, and loved all but 1 of them (signature southern, but it has a really high ABC). Some favorites are razzel dazzel, uberlin, smuckers jelly, and duex. They have live music some times and an overall good vibe and friendly staff.

Anne G.

Yelp
Loved our drinks and the bartender was super nice and helpful. They offer a great variety.
