As a general rule, I much prefer dinning out midweek than the weekend. I blame Anthony Bordain, ever since reading his book Kitchen Confidential it just seems more logical. The chefs have more time, the restaurants are quieter, staff are less rushed, the food is fresher and the prices tend to be cheaper. Ergo a much better experience.
This particular wet Tuesday autumnal evening was much like any other, expect that it was my birthday. And I could think of no better place I'd like to celebrate my 32nd year on the planet than Glasgow favourite, Stravaigin.
This West End eatery takes it's name from the old Scots word 'Stravaig' (meaning to wander aimlessly) and that ethos is reflected in their cooking style, taking the best Scottish produce and giving it an international twist. Dishes such as Thai spiced pork belly and hake with red pepper and chorizo sausage are great examples of taking the best of fresh local ingredients and giving them a continental flare.
Stravaigin's relaxed style offers dining upstairs as well as down. I personally prefer the cosy, candle lit ambience of downstairs, especially on a wet September evening. The menu is however the same, wherever you choose to sit.
The only trouble with said menu is making your mind up, such is the quality and variety of choice. While you deliberate, fresh bread and dip is served, tonight's offering of Berlotti bean and tomato is particularly appetising. Staples like Steamed West coast mussels with sweet chilli and coriander broth, haggis, neeps and tatties are joined by daily/weekly specials such as pan fried pigeon breast. Tonight I opted for a special of Mull cheddar and polenta cakes, which was served in a sweetcorn and chilli veloute.
The main course is an even more difficult choice, the Scottish seafood in Bloody Mary broth closely pipping the 'curry of the moment'. A smorgasbord of treats from Scottish waters including crab, clams, mussels and salmon, served up in a tasty tomatoey broth. This is washed down nicely by a crisp, slightly creamy Garganega, selected from the uncluttered, unpretentious wine list.
I'm not much of a pudding man but even I am powerless to resist the salted caramel and chocolate tart, served with amaretto ice-cream and honeycomb. This calorie laden treat is to die for!
Once again this multi AA rosette winning restaurant is right on the money, consistently delivering wonderful food in great surroundings.
