This storefront will always be Asqew Grill to me, and I was both delighted a decade ago when a new restaurant popped up here and sure that it wouldn't last long. Mexico City street food? Who would eat that--who would specifically choose that when regular taquerias Zona Rosa (RIP) and that revolving-door one just down the street offered wider, cheaper menus?
I don't know whether I'm a fan of Street Taco, but it has grown into its spot. I do wish it would open the front windows/doors more often, especially when it's mildly hot. (It gets very hot inside because the kitchen is completely open, not just visible.) On the rare occasions I would get food from here, I'd usually pick it up and walk it back to my flat. That's no longer possible, so I eat in now if I eat here at all.
I used to fluctuate between the nopales and grilled veggies in my super burrito, but lately, I've been getting the nachos with nopales. Everything here is a ripoff, but I'm slowly getting used to everything in the US (not just in San Francisco) being a ripoff now, so it's not as much of a ripoff as it was ten years ago, even though the prices have gone way up since then.
As always, vegetarians get hosed. Really, Street Taco? Every single meat costs the same amount? How is that even possible? It's not, and they make profit off of us while undercharging the carnivores, who would blush at the sticker shock.
The street salad is remarkably good, but it's overpriced. If you're here with a bunch of people, order one and have people try it. It's good for that.
This review sounds negative, but I'm a softy at heart, and I have warmed up on this place. Zona Rosa is no more, and El Rancho Grande is much better on Divisadero Street (and even on Irving Street), so Street Taco might rule Mexican food in the Upper Haight. Just don't tell anyone you heard it from me.
