The Best Restaurants for Fried Chicken in San Diego - Eater San Diego

"Folks have flocked to StreetCar Merchants since they first opened in North Park in late 2014. They’re still frying up Mary’s Free Range Air Chilled Chickens too, Southern style and a twice-fried chicken Korean-style plus a chicken sandwich, all which come with a variety of sauces, including Sriracha mayo and sweet Korean BBQ." - Darlene Horn, Candice Woo

Where to Find Nashville Hot Chicken in San Diego - Eater San Diego

"Fried chicken is cooked-to-order here in a variety of styles including Nashville hot. Along with boneless chicken fingers, chicken can be ordered by the bird (half or whole), pieces (white or dark) and even gluten-free. Tack on sides like waffles, salted watermelon, fried green tomatoes and other Southern dishes to complete your meal." - Darlene Horn

I'm definitely coming back here for more! Good portions to fill you up with good flavors. Two cocktails around $12 each, a slice of carrot cake around $10, and the two meals posted took us to $79 before tip. I'm definitely excited to try other menu items. I'm not going to lie, I was nervous about the service as I have not heard great things; however, we got our food very fast and enjoyed our late Monday night service.

This place is so good I went twice in one week. I'm from the south and this is the best fried chicken I have had since I moved to San Diego. The owner is awesome and staff even better! They showed great customer service when my friends felt their chicken wasn't popping hot, they went and got super fresh pieces for them and some biggest for our wait!! Love this place!

Now I love a good fried chicken as much as the next guy and this place didn't disappoint. Chicken was fried to perfection. Crispy on the outside and juicy from the inside. Chicken was flavored with herbs and spices and cayenne. Waffles were great as well and so was the potato salad. But nothing can measure up to the fried chicken. Would definitely visit again.

They make a big deal out of not being a "fast food" joint, and that all food is made to order. I'm all for that, but the kitchen obviously has serious organizational problems. We got there before the rush; we were the only people in line and there were maybe four other parties already seated. In the forty five minutes between placing our order and getting our food, I saw five takeout orders get picked up. I also saw a table next to us get half of their order (they ordered after us) while the other two people at the table waited at least fifteen more minutes to get their food. When our order finally came out, two of the three dishes we ordered were cold and limp. The only thing that was hot -- a two piece dark meat combo -- they managed to both get the order wrong (included a drum and a breast instead of a drum and a thigh), AND undercook the drumstick. The breast was quite good, but there's no way this place is worth the cost in either time or money. Two stars for a pleasant atmosphere and decent canned beer selection. There is much better fried chicken in town for much cheaper. Would not come back.

Was serve RAW chicken, and server/restaurant did DO NOTHING, that is just beyond me! I worked in the industry and when someone tells me something is wrong with the food, no questions ask…the protocol is to take it back, refund them, and do what you can to make it up to them. The server just looked at me dumbfounded and said “I’ll tell the chef” didn’t bring the chicken back, didn’t come back to the table. Let’s talk about the whole experience and the food itself a bit more: - The fired chicken was extremely salty, it’s a method to make meat juicy but they went overboard. - The batter on the chicken was inconsistent. 2 of the wings were significantly lighter than the others and after first taste it was clearly a different batter and was so dead that it was like a hard cardboard. Never had I ever experience such bad batter. - Service was just not there. no check back to see if the food was ok, I had to wait for a server to make the rounds and eventually I had to flag them down

I was super excited to try this place and based on our take out experience we’ll probably not be back to dine or pick up here. $81 later we are sitting at home disappointed. The chicken was overly fried and dry, the mashed potatoes and mac and cheese were extremely salty (and I eat really salty) and the fried pickles were ice cold. The key lime pie was a bit small for $8.75 but the carrot cake was good.

The two stars was because the cashier was polite through all of this, otherwise it would have been a one star. I would not recommend coming here and if you do. Do not order anything fried. When I stayed in San Diego years ago I loved this place but the food has truly gone down hill since then especially to be so expensive. I came for a visit today and ordered three whole wings fired crispy to go.When I got to my hotel I opened up my food to eat my chicken and there was so much grease inside the chicken, the skin was fried but the meet was slimy. This is usually a sign that chicken is fried to fast or bad/spoiled chicken has been fried from what someone had told me who owns a restaurant. I went back into the restaurant with my food and told the cashier and asked for chicken fingers instead and she told me that they do not take food back once it has left the building. I told her I never heard that before and that is odd because how would a person know something is wrong with their to-go order unless they got home and started to eat it? She understood what I was saying and went to ask her manager after I politely insisted that my order was not “eatable”. She came back and said that the manager said they will only swop the three wings for another batch but not anything else. I had no choice so I had to agree. I did not want wings again bc if they messed them up the first time then my thought was they would do it again. They did mess them up again and it was the same issue, the outside was crispy but the inside extremely slimy and field with grease. I just threw them away and lost my money bc they did not want to allow me to change my order.

Came here due to a friend's suggestion , ordered two of the Chicken and Waffle combos , and got an extra side of the Nashville hot chicken gizzards. Chicken was okay, but nothing special. I think our favorite part of the meal was the waffle and the Sweet tea . Gizzards weren't weren't spicy at all, just covered in oil .
