"Turning a drab concrete shell in Stretford Mall into an inviting dining room isn’t easy, but Stretford Canteen has pulled it off with flowers on every table, an eclectic playlist that bounces from Kevin Morby to Kraftwerk, plus water jugs and vintage signs that feel lifted from a brocante in the south of France. The excellent modern European cooking shows in small details: tarragon mayo for dipping irresistible panisse into, oyster mushrooms laced with vermouth alongside a crisp potato pave, and the shiniest umber sauce on a frankly perfect steak au poivre, where ex-dairy sirloin is crusted with its ruby sheen still visible underneath the gloss. Desserts are homely and pleasing, too. What a lovely place to dine. The staff were attentive and very knowledgeable. Service was efficient but not rushed. Food was excellent with good choices on the set menu. The atmosphere was just right for couples or groups, the place isn’t so big that noise stopped me hearing my partner, it had an intimate feel to it. Unfortunately forgot to take a picture of the starters but they were both delicious (although I had to peel the one large prawn included in the prawn cocktail- not something she liked to do- but I was told the whole thing tasted very good.), my black pudding was also very good nice and crisp with a lovely apple and mustard sauce accompanying it. The main was beef bourguignon pie was full of meat with ample gravy. The crispy potatoes and spiced red cabbage were the ideal combination. The desserts just rounded the meal (frangipane mince tart and quince trifle, both delicious)

Been wanting to visit here for a while, finally went in Sunday for the fixed price menu. Overall the food was good , I'd really like to go back and try the normal menu. I had a prawn cocktail which was a classic and then venison pie. My partner had the Black pudding then cos for main. We shared a dauphinoise potato which you'll need a side as it doesn't come with one. The service was excellent and has a lovely vibe. It's quite pricey but you pay for quality.

Stretford Canteen is a great little independent spot that really gets the important things right. The food was genuinely delicious, and the coffee was exactly how you want it - rich and well made. The service was a bit all over the place, but honestly, it didn’t spoil the visit. The place has a charm you just don’t get from bigger chains, and the quality of the food makes it somewhere I’d definitely go back to.

came for the set menu, i got the steak and potatoes. Loved the potatoes but the steak came cold, maybe i'll have to try something else from the menu. Great ambiance and good service.

Loved my French style brunch dish, a spinach, egg and comté galette. There's plenty of other options too. I got there early on a Saturday morning and it was already filling up quickly and you could tell some were regulars. Service is very efficient and staff are super friendly. A lovely local venue 🤩

Genuine, honest, magnificent food. The hake was juicy, soft and tender. The pickled eggs cured my fear of pickled eggs. The mushroom &potato pave is a must to try. The warmth atmosphere makes you want to sit there for hours. Lovely lighting and set up. I recommend sitting at the bar if you want to see how wonderful the pace of how the chef works. The thriving, giant, great looking monstera makes you feel a little jealous and sad for your own house plants. Superb service and lovely front of house. 👏Cccclean toilet.

Delicious food in a lovely setting. Staff are attentive and friendly, the prix fixe deal is great value. I'd rank Stretford Canteen up there with Erst / Higher Ground etc. as one of the best restaurants in Manchester, it's certainly the best-value eatery in this bracket. Can't recommendhighly enough!
