Where to Order Takeout Food in Chicago During the COVID-19 Pandemic | Eater Chicago

"This ramen destination has mastered the challenging art of packaging noodles, soup, and toppings to-go at all three of its Chicago outposts (Chinatown, Lakeview, and Hyde Park). Place orders online for steaming bowls of miso ramen with kuro buta, vegetarian shoyu, gyoza, and much more." - Aimee Levitt

The atmosphere and experience was awesome. I will say that the food needs a bit more flavor, as someone that has eaten various Ramen over the world including Korean Rameon, I was disappointed. While I understand some pallets are not the same, make it full flavor.

Stopped in for Sunday lunch off a dear friend’s recommendation. I am so glad she picked this place out. Totally enjoyed my food! 10/10 highly recommend!!

Google
The food was only ok. It was very bland and I had to strain part of my dish in order to use the seasoned soup that comes with it. The server pointed to where the menu was and then went on to do other things while I viewed the menu. I was confused about the menu items and had to wave the server over to where I was standing reading the menu. After getting clarity on what some of the ingredients were in one of their dishes I placed my order. It only took ten minutes to receive which was great being it that I was the only one there.

A casual noodle joint on 53rd. Good interior atmosphere, heavy on the wood and good lighting. Service is good. Wide selection of ramens and some rice bowls, as well as boba. The miso ramen was way too salty--far too salty to sip the broth--but all the stuff in the ramen bowl was very good. Their beef was tender.

Google
Strings Ramen Shop in Hyde Park is one of our favorite spots to eat in Chicago. Every time we go, we’re welcomed by a Colombian guy who always provides outstanding service — friendly, attentive, and professional. In fact, the whole team is amazing. Everyone is kind, efficient, and creates a great atmosphere. And the food? Absolutely delicious! The ramen is flavorful, well-prepared, and made with fresh ingredients. It’s a place we always enjoy coming back to. Highly recommended! ⸻

Yelp
Such a cute little spot in Hyde park with amazing ramen! I thought I didn't like ramen until I tried this place. Even for a vegetarian, they have plenty of options. I absolutely loved their sriracha broccoli which had SO much flavor I'm still dreaming about it. Highly recommend stopping by!

Yelp
RUDE and RACIST! My husband and I have gone here a few times, and we always get the same waiter. He is usually very short with us, not the friendliest, but the service is good enough. This time we went we got him again. As we were finishing up I asked him for a container for my leftovers. Usually, he would pack it up for me and bring it back in a bag. Today, he ignored my request for the container and asked if he could bring the check. Even though my husband was still eating, I agreed. He left and came back with the check and decided to tell my husband that the amount did not include the tip. My husband told him that he knew that already and gave him cash for the bill. He then had to then be reminded that I asked for a container. He brought it back, slammed it on the table, and didn't pack it up for me as he normally would. Then he stood by and watched me awkwardly pour noodles from a huge bowl into a deli container. I said all this to say that I've never felt welcome there, but I love their food, so I put that to the side. I forgot to mention that when we walked in every single table was full of dishes and there were only patrons at one other table. A table had to be cleaned off before we could sit down, so the restaurant was a mess. Again, something that probably would have bothered me had the visit not been so horrible. He basically treated us like we were about to dine and dash and would leave without leaving a tip. He's seen us before, and we've always been kind and left a tip even though the service wasn't as friendly as we would like it to have been. I'm so glad that Strngs has other locations becasue we will not go back to Hyde Park ever again.

Yelp
My daughter and I LOVE this place! I can't believe I haven't written a review until now. This past Monday was the 2nd birthday of hers we've spent there and it was amazing as usual. It's because of my now 17 year-old, that I love ramen on a different level. Years ago when she became an anime enthusiast, her interest in ramen grew a thousand-fold...and not just for the cheap grocery store packs we whipped up in 4-5 minutes in the microwave. Like, it's a whole movement. After an epic weekend of pre-partying with her friends, on her ACTUAL birthday, I was like, "Hey, let's get ramen, just me and you." We show up on a Monday evening and it was pretty packed, but we were able to get seated right away. Even though we usually order the same thing, they had two new Halloween ramen dishes on the menu--black and red tonkotsu ramen, so we dove in. Delicious, rich and spicy. The karaage we always order was crunchiliciously on point, as usual. Service is always fast and friendly, the vibe is always chill and the prices are great. They have a customer for life!

Yelp
Four stars for the food. Two stars - maybe even one star - for the service. We came here on a Friday evening to take my daughter and her friends to dinner. There were seven of us in the group and the restaurant was not busy at all, so we were able to find a table right away. Someone brought us water and told us to scan the QR code to see the menu, then someone would come by to take our order. I prefer physical menus, but I've seen this electronic format become more common so I didn't think anything of it. So we made our selections and waited. And waited. And waited. We saw at least 3 people who appeared to be FOH staff walking back and forth but they never made eye contact and he had to literally wave and shout at someone to come take our order. They looked almost bewildered that we actually wanted to order food at a restaurant. Once we ordered, the food came out fairly quickly. We shared an order of wasabi string beans which was delicious. I had the black garlic tonkotsu ramen, which was overall excellent. The broth was rich and almost buttery, but the noodles weren't quite the right consistency. There was a decent-sized chunk of pork belly, but they could have been a little more generous with the vegetable. The egg was way overcooked - really, it shouldn't have been served at all. Other people liked their ramen as well - the level 3 "Hell Ramen" was a hit, but not nearly as spicy as was implied by their rating scale. Someone got the clams and pork over rice, a dish we hadn't encountered before, and this was also pretty good but maybe a little heavy on the salt. After we finished dinner, there was more waiting. No one seemed interested in bringing us the bill. I half suspect that we could have walked out of there without paying and nobody would have noticed. In the meantime, another group had been seated next to us and the waitress struck up a nice conversation with them - after bringing them a set of paper menus! I guess we didn't look like the type of group that deserved the courtesy of half-decent customer service. The final annoyance was the automatic 18% gratuity that was added for groups of 5 or more. Honestly, they didn't warrant that amount. We won't be back.

Yelp
Good ramen and pot stickers, slightly less great karaage. Friendly and efficient service, but it was also really slow during a mid afternoon lunch.

Yelp
I always enjoy whatever new food I try and the service is mad decent! One of my fave string locations and the vibe is really chill. Great place to go with friends!!!!

Yelp
Quick, priced well, and really good ramen. One of my favorite spots primarily because they offer poultry for a meat. Most ramen is under $15, it's rich in flavor and the quantity is plentiful. The restaurant is clean inside, and it gives an modern Asian eatery vibe, but they have the typical setup at tables of chopsticks, soy sauces, etc. so you don't need a server for those items.

Yelp
I think Strings is the only ramen place in Hyde Park and I'm very happy that they are here. Strings has great ramen and an assortment of flavors. You can't go wrong with any of them. I got the black garlic tonkatsu ramen and thought it was flavorful--I ate the whole thing. The restaurant is great for a solo outing or a group dinner. The price is a little expensive, but their food is very good. I do remember walking by one day when they were supposed to be open and no one was working, but that is the only complaint I would have.

Marcus B.

Yelp
Great food! The ramen is good for the area. The hell ramen is a fun task. Also the fried rice is good
google avatar

Angela L.

Yelp
The ramen honestly wasn't that good, the flavour tasted very odd.. not sure how to describe it. I am unsure of what might be the standard of ramen in Chicago as I've had many great ramen places in Toronto but strings just wasn't good. Maybe I'll give another flavour a try next time. The waiter was super nice though!

Yelp
Excellent service and the waiter was amazing thoughtful and quick ! The table was cleaned off in less than 3 minutes we were sat attended to and got food in under 10 minutes.

Yelp
Yasss free edamame. What a treat. Holy ramen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yelp

Yelp
Coming here was like every yelper's dream of good restaurant experience! I believe they just finished opening so the restaurant was empty which I was happy about. I was greeted by a friendly waiter. I sat at the bar and he pulled out my seat for me. Then another waiter came to give me water and directed me to the menu scan code on the bar table. I ordered the Shio Ramen. The waiter was kind to explain that there is a mixture of fish that makes up the fish cake included in the ramen. As a person who has a fish allergy I decided to exclude it from my bowl. I really enjoyed my meal. The chicken and turkey broth was amazing. Some of the best ramen I've ever had. I also ordered milk tea. I feel like they mentioned it was homemade. It was really good and I wish I had tapioca to top everything off. I like the interior here. It has a contemporary/modern feel with the wood and the lights. I also appreciate the bits of greenery. I like that you can see the chef make the food from the bar. It's cool to see the process of how the food is made. I also appreciate the touchless payment option. I could use Apple Pay from my phone and go.

Yelp
Good food and decently priced, even if the portions are a bit on the smaller side. Nice lighting, seating, and decor. Happy to have this as a ramen spot in Hyde Park.
google avatar

Jay C.

Yelp
A beautiful family atmosphere makes the food taste even better. If meat is involved, choose the pork belly. The ramen has a texture all its own; engage it with joy! Don't mind the slurping, just have a good wad of napkins in your non-chopsticks hand.
google avatar

Yelp
My fiancé and I always get their seafood ramen. Good amount of food for the price. Unfortunately, we've always taken out, so cannot eat much to the service and atmosphere.
google avatar

Bernice F.

Yelp
This is such a reliable spot when you are craving Ramen. I've never had a bad bowl here. The appetizers are also solid. I like the indoor dining experience as well as takeout. The atmosphere inside is really laid-back and I enjoy the diversity of people who come in. Will be back often
google avatar

Yelp
Strings is my go-to ramen stop in Hyde Park. Often times I can walk in and be seated with little to no wait. Noise level is normal but can get busy late at night closer to closing. The miso ramen has tons of flavor and comes in a vegetarian option. Portions are a good size to leave you satisfied but not uncomfortable. Thank you to the patient servers who always to explain what's what on the menu! I'll be back.

Daniela B.

Yelp
Very Good Ramen, very good. I love the Tonkotsu. Be careful though; the level 5 spicy might be lethal. But probably good though still.

Jasmine C.

Yelp
Love it. It is a was amazing my first time definitely will be back! Waitress was so nice
google avatar

Rachel Z.

Yelp
I love Strings Ramen! The vegan hell ramen is delicious, and the service is great. There are a lot of potted plants and paper lanterns inside, which make the space feel really cozy. This is a great choice for a special occasion or just to treat yourself!

Eboni A.

Yelp
Best place on the south side for ramen. Chile vibe, great food, and lovely service. BYOB!

Yelp
Definitely some of the best ramen I've had in Chicago, so far. I've only been able to find one ramen that I've preferred, but this one is the tastiest & most bang-for-your-buck. The Tonkatsu Premium Ramen bowl was HUGE & every bite was a flavor bomb. Every taste filled with porky-broth goodness & the bowl had heaping mounds of goodies, from pork belly, pork loin, beef tongue, spicy clams, & savory pork chunks - it was a feast of flavor. The one thing I would say, make sure to get something sweet on the side to help cut how rich and savory the huge bowl of Tonkatsu Ramen is - definitely get the mochi afterward, too. For the veggie Shoyu Ramen, it was the best veggie ramen option we've tasted around Chicago. Lots of rich nori & mushroom flavor in the broth & the noodles were medium to firm texture, which was a good contrast to the tender veggies in the broth. Overall, a great ramen place that I'll definitely be coming back to. Next time, I might even take on the "Monster Hell Ramen Challenge," it looks like great fun.

Yelp
Looking for a causal laid back spot in this liberal enclave called Hyde Park? Look no further. The layers of flavor and friendly service will have you coming back weekly. The pork was so tender. The broth was rich and soulful service was friendly and quick.
google avatar

Kim S.

Yelp
This place is located on one of the main strips in Hyde Park. It's good for quick Ramen, and or poke they can make it pretty spicy which is great. My friend also really likes their mushroom salad.

Yelp
I've been dying to try Strings for years... Even though it is hot outside I want a good hot broth to slurp on: Service: It took a minute to be acknowledged and seated by the server. Once seated I'm immediately ask to place my order I told the lady I need a minute. Every question I asked the server she was very sarcastic and acted as though uuummm why are you asking me that with an attitude. Food: I ordered the seafood & kuro buta with pork belly. The broth was not hott at all not one time did I have to blow. For the cost you get 2 little shrimp 2 scallops sliced in half and shredded crab. I didn't like the flavor of the broth the corn takes over and the noodles were hard. I wrapped it up and doctored it up at home smh. Try for yourself!
google avatar

Laura Z.

Yelp
Great ramen. The wasabi string bean as an appetizer was pretty good as well. We ordered the tonkotsu premium ramen that has a variety of meats, some veggie and half a soft boiled egg. Highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Maricel J.

Yelp
Late post My colleague and I ordered lunch from here yesterday. I ordered the vegetable yakisoba and for whatever reason, my pictures are not uploading. Despite this, I don't think I've ever had ramen that was light, yet filling until now. The vegetables were fresh and the broth was very tasty. We will definitely order from here again, and this time, we might try their Hell Ramen.

Kevin W.

Yelp
Food was great, spice was tasty, I was satisfied, took a while to be served, but worth it. Edamame was FREE! #stringsramen
google avatar

Tiffany D.

Yelp
Quaint little ramen spot that's a relief from the super expensive over priced meals I had throughout my trip in mainly downtown Chicago. Staff was nice and ramen was very good! I would recommend this hip college area side of town for a hang out spot!
google avatar

Jess H.

Yelp
Free edamame for the table when you check in on Yelp! I thought this ramen spot was just okay. The broth was weak and not as flavorful. The service was just okay, the worker was a little rude and it took awhile to get our check even though there was only two other people dining in. I've had better ramen at other places so I won't be back.
google avatar

Brandi K.

Yelp
I ate it! Never been to a Ramen place, it was great. Really great service from everyone, especially Andy! The beef tongue was good. Very filling, good portions, good price, but great service. The ambience is cool. I dont love the tables but still enjoyed the meal. Byob

Larry C.

Yelp
Always appreciate a delicious piping hot ramen w pork belly! Seafood miso, too! Rich Tonkatsu broth!
google avatar

Yelp
Great tasting ramen. Definitely recommend! Reminds me of the ramen place in Sawtelle only this is a larger place. Great service. Also had their Unagi over egg/rice - did not disappoint! Great taste experience!
google avatar

William B.

Yelp
There is a very good ramen shop in Hyde Park that offers good delivery! The noodles are great. The tonkotsu broth is superlative -- rich, savory, satisfying, just a hint of sweetness. I can quibble with the quantity and interest of some of the toppings, though I will never tire of the medium-boiled soy-cured eggs. But the most important thing is that this is a very good ramen shop in Hyde Park that offers good delivery! Why quibble?
google avatar

Leela S.

Yelp
I kinda want to give 3.5 stars? But rounding up. I got takeout today for the first time and tried the vegetarian hell ramen at the standard level. I think next time I would have gotten spicier. The broth was good and I liked that most of the ramens had veggie options! Most ramen places only have one. However, I wish the ramen had tofu or something substantial. Also the noodles were all clumped together so it was hard to eat after pouring in the broth because it was so solid. After it warmed up and de solidified it was tasty but some noodle chewing to start. Maybe it's different in person.
google avatar

Ayse M.

Yelp
Tried the veggie miso ramen and was pleasantly suprised! The flavor was really good and the portion size was generous. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Zariaa T.

Yelp
ASK FOR A RECEIPT!!! they over charged me by 13$ and that's after their 25% tip. I'd let them get away with this but their Food wasn't to rave about. you'd think I'm just being a hater but fr try another ramen restaurant.

Jude G.

Yelp
Amazing service! The place is really clean and cozy. It's perfect for any occasion and the food came out fast. The miso and shoyu ramen were excellent and I would for sure recommend it to anyone of all ages.
google avatar

Chevy R.

Yelp
Rather empty inside, we were Seated immediately, distant from other diners. The workers were masked. Cute inside with a nice size menu. Our waitress was very strange, she spoke very lightly and was rather impersonal. The food took longer than expected to be prepared but it was pretty good. The ambiance is nice and the price is fair. There were a lot of take out orders. I would go back.
google avatar

LaDarian D.

Yelp
Not the quality of Archer or Belmont. Saw this one in Hyde Park & was excited. The pork was weird texture & extremely dark, the chicken Karagee was also kind of suspect. We both had stomach aches overnight. Last time at this location. Hopefully the product isn't companywide & they have reminisced entirely.
google avatar

Dan T.

Yelp
My friend disliked her dish, in fact, thought it tasted rancid. The waitress took it away immediately and apologized, then they charged us the full price, even though it was barely eaten, and didn't offer any sort of discount or way to make up for the experience. the waitress said she had no way to remove the item and simply apologized. Normally I'd talk a manager but wasn't in the mood. It seems like a great place, but that's a terrible experience.
google avatar

Joy E.

Yelp
Love eating here! Their ramen is always top notch. Best ramen ever. Even introduced my partner here and he loves it too.
google avatar

Harlan S.

Yelp
Good ramen relative to other half-descent food in Hyde Park. Pork Gyoza is okay, and the Tonkotsu Ramen was exactly that, but the taste didn't bring anything special to the table. Overall, good place to get a bite in Hyde Park.
google avatar

Nacho Z.

Yelp
To anyone wondering, the level 5 Hell Ramen is definitely serious business. You might think, "I can handle Samyang 2x Spicy Ramen no problem," but this one is on a completely different level. However, I could tell there's no capsaicin extract in the ramen: just all natural reaper heat. While the spice level on the level 5 may be a challenge to many, it was the quantity required to complete the challenge that did me in. From experience, I'd say that the level 5 challenge is about the equivalent of mixing 3 to 4 diced ghost peppers in with 2 packages of Samyang 2x Spicy Ramen. My stomach started to push back at about the 7 minute mark, bringing up memories of the few times that I ate a scorpion pepper and the many hours of pain as I felt it work it's way through every inch of my digestive tract. Considering that trauma and my 3 hour drive home, I decided to call it and order a delicious milk tea. Good call, and the waitress was kind enough to give me the soothing beverage on the house. All in all, it was was great experience that I probably won't try again any time soon. I'll definitely go back to Strings Ramen, but next time, I'm sticking to the level 4. UPDATE: Don't plan on sleeping much the night you take the challenge, if you dare to do so. Prepare for pain akin to passing a kidney stone. There's a reason why that kind waitress asked you twice if you are sure you want to do the challenge and then made you sign a waiver. ;)

Yelp
TL;DR - This location is excellent; love the decor, great service, and food. The ramen was just what the doctor ordered - depths of flavor, that pork bone broth had a wonderful umami note, with just enough spice to break into a slight sweat. In this era of pandemics , patrons are spaced out, and signs detailing mask etiquette are displayed that ask for patrons to help ensure the safety of fellow guests and staff, which is greatly appreciated. I'll be back!
google avatar

Aimee G.

Yelp
Food was good! I've had better, but it fulfills the need for ramen in Hyde Park. I thought the Tonkotsu lacked a little bit of flavor and zing, so I dumped the leftover gyoza spicy sauce and it elevated it dish quite a bit for me. The noodles were cooked perfectly.
google avatar

Erika M.

Yelp
Love strings. The staff is great. The ramen is great. The wait time are short and is an easy grab for something warm and delicious on a rainy or cold day. Highly recommend. It's not the best ramen but if your looking for convenience and a consistency. This is your place!
google avatar

Betty W.

Yelp
Just FYI they have no vegan ramen options. I've tried the vegetarian hell ramen before though without knowing loll and it was really average. Spicy, but not interesting. It's what you would expect ramen to taste like at a chain restaurant, I guess. After learning that the ramen wasn't vegan the next time I went, I got the veggie rice bowl without the egg. It was actually pretty good! I think I liked it more than the ramen haha. Also, they let me know the veggie gyozas weren't vegan either. The service was lukewarm, bordering on slow. Cute vibe, but also there were flies so that took away from the experience a bit haha...not sure if I'll be back.
