The 38 Best Pittsburgh Restaurants | Eater DC

"Ariel Alexander and Cody Maze launched Stuntpig as a food truck in 2020. Their celebration of smoked and cured meats (plus some vegetarian options) in sandwich form quickly became a sensation at Pittsburgh-area breweries and events. Earlier this year, the couple opened a brick-and-mortar version of the now-retired “Pig Rig,” serving a rotating menu of killer handhelds such as Mr. Orange (smoked chicken, peri-peri sauce, pickles), Pitt Beef (smoked and shaved beef, thin vidalia onions, tiger sauce) and Madonia’s Muffuletta. Expect a small selection of handmade sides. The super-herby potato salad is especially good." - Melissa McCart

Google
Stuntpig: Sandwiches Like No Other! Food truck concept that has found a tiny (but mighty!) home in Squirrel Hill, and it’s serving up some of the most delicious, crave-worthy sandwiches around. Their mission? To deliver bold, creative twists on classic sandwich staples — and they absolutely nail it. Everything is made from scratch, from their perfectly prepared meats to the house-made pickles, sauces, and garnishes. Their rotating menu keeps things fresh and seasonal, and the flavors are next level. Think bold, inventive combinations that make your taste buds sit up and pay attention. Some highlights I got to try: The Pitt Beef – My favorite of the bunch! Smoked, rosy beef piled high with sweet Vidalia onions and horseradish cream, served cold. It's simple, smart, and bursting with flavor. Mr. Nice Guy (Grandma June’s Crabcake) – A killer crabcake sandwich with Old Bay aioli, fresh arugula, and a grilled lemon. Absolutely delicious. The Spot's Salad – Honestly, a standout. Crisp greens, pickled beets, baked chèvre, candied walnuts, and a honey yogurt vinaigrette. Bright, fresh, and balanced. On the Bone – Pig Wings – Tender suckling pork shanks glazed with chile caramel and finished with cilantro, mint, and peanuts. Sweet, spicy, and finger-licking good. The menu is small but has exactly what you need— and they’re thoughtful about including options for kids, vegetarians, and gluten-free eaters. Bonus points: they deep fry nothing. That’s right — big flavor without the fryer. All in all, Stuntpig is a gem. It’s worth the hype and absolutely worth the adventure to Squirrel Hill.

Google
Super tasty food. The menu is small, as is the dining area, but the quality is high. It’s a great spot to stop in for a quick meal if you’re in squirrel hill area.

I’ve had Mr. Orange, Murray Turkey, Lil Jawn, Pit Beef, the wings (chicken, pig), the salads (potato, pretzel jello), and I have been AMAZED by each and every visit. No one seems to have a dedication to flavor and authenticity like Stuntpig does, and it shows throughout their rotating menu and commitment to outstanding taste!

Google
Small sandwich spot that’s great for a quick lunch or a to go meal. Pirogies and Mr orange were good picks. The sandwich is piled high with meat!

They know what they’re doing. The pit beef might be the best 3 ingredient sandwich I’ve ever had. Since trying it, the only thing I’ve thought about is what sandwich I’m going to get next.

Stopped by for lunch. I was surprised that there was no line, we have been hearing about their sandwhich for a while. We were greeted by the owner who walked us through the menu. My wife and I each ordered a sandwich. She ordered the Pitt Beef, and I ordered the Lil Jawn. Both sandwiches were awesome. I also enjoyed the ginger ale they had available. Hope to come back soon! 100% recommended!

First time getting takeout here, and wow, do they live up to the hype! Best tofu sandwich I’ve ever eaten and the employees were very friendly. I can’t believe how perfectly they cooked the tofu. Get ready to sweat, because it’s hot, but well worth it!

If you haven’t been to Stuntpig while they were a food truck or since they opened, you can’t miss them. They combine unique flavors, lots of international flavors and use of pickling and brine is so good. I got the Murray Turkey and it’s one of the best turkey sandwiches I’ve ever had, the Romesco was so nice, the pickled onions and cucumbers with the shallot vinaigrette was amazing and refreshing with the smoked turkey. I also got the hot shot peppers as a side, pickled peppers stuffed with prosciutto and mozzarella and they were so good, tangy and spicy. My wife got her favorite sandwich the Pitt beef but said my sandwich might finally dethrone it! It’s a small shop run by amazing people please go support them they’re awesome and no one does sandwiches even remotely like them.

Yelp
Best sandwich in Pittsburgh? To borrow from the Talking Heads: this must be the place. It's difficult to believe such a small space can yield such ambitious and audacious sandwiches on a daily basis. I admire the duo behind the magic for their efficiency and their creativity, as there's almost always a new special floating among the menu staples. While I've yet to have a sandwich here I haven't loved, the Pitt Beef and the Murray Turkey stand out: the first for perfect contrast (hot bun and cold beef) and flavor (sweet onions and tiger sauce); the second for its surprising elevation of a sandwich you've had 1,000 times to an incomparable delicacy. These are PERFECT and adventurous sandwiches. Eating them is truly a sublime experience. This is the only sandwich shop in the city where when they have a new special sandwich, but I'm craving one of my old favorites, I'll just buy and eat both. WITH NO SHAME. You won't catch Big Daddy with an Ozympic body. This belly is grand! The name of the shop sounds confusingly like a porn based on the Pulp Fiction gimp, or maybe like a fluffer on the set of said porn. But the people running the shop couldn't be sweeter, kinder, gentler, or more deserving of some investors to give them a bigger space and more employees. THIS PLACE DESERVES EVERYONE'S SUPPORT

Yelp
Good food overall, with a well run operation behind it. We ordered takeout, and the ordering experience was great. The order was ready exactly on time, and the restaurant staff was very friendly. This seemed very much like a small independent establishment, which I assume it is. In terms of the food, I'll start by saying that this isn't the typical food I seek out. It's a little on the heavy side, but they also offered somewhat manageable portion sizes. That's a good thing: each item offered a reasonable quantity of food. The Tofu Mr Orange was reasonably presented. A reasonably sized bun, a manageable slice of breaded tofu, some crisp cucumbers, a hot sauce with some heat, and maybe a touch more aioli than I expected. All told, it came together well. The spot salad was fresh and crisp, with beets adding some nice depth. The candied walnuts on the salad were fine, but they didn't add the texture I would have hoped for. The potato salad was certainly mayonnaise based, but it also packed plenty of herbs and celery. It wasn't too over the top. The chickpea salad was fine, and a nice option, but it was largely unexceptional. All told this was an excellent sandwich shop experience with some good vegetarian options. Everything seemed to be made with care, but it's still a sandwich shop. Worth checking out, if that's what you're looking for.

Yelp
Hip sandwich shop with great food that's worth the drive to Squirrel Hill! I think we must have placed at least 3 rounds of orders - we kept enjoying everything so much and noticing more we wanted to try on the menu so it felt like we were constantly back at the register LOL For starters, I love the vibe of this spot - it's small and feels sort of tucked away on the outside but when you enter, you're met with this adorable, brightly colored shop with such cute decor and complimentary hibiscus water! Ofc the menu too is creative and so hard to choose from - we ended up electing to share the pierogis and I got the Mr. Orange for my sandwich. I really enjoyed my sandwich (it had a great sauce - they did warn us when ordering that if you don't like spice, you should do their romesco sauce instead but I didn't personally find the piri piri to be that hot so I recommend still getting it anyways!) but somebody in our group got the Mr. Jawn and everybody who tried it was absolutely raving about it - it seems like that's the sandwich to get! The pierogis were great too and I really enjoyed the accoutrements that came with them! We also ended up ordering their potato salad (very bright and flavorful) and jerk chicken wings (nice char and sauce on the side, but wish there was more jerk flavor on the chicken itself) Overall, I really enjoyed checking this spot out and can't wait to come back and try the Mr. Jawn sandwich that was such a hit with our group!

Yelp
Staff was super friendly, service was quick, and the sandwich was delicious. I had the Murray Turkey sandwich, which I would highly recommend.

Yelp
Pork milanese and murray turkey goated. They give you like a full pork cutlet in the milanese, really good stuff. Cool free water- hibiscus water. Takes a bit for the sandwich to come out and only 2 tables for seating inside but sandwich is so fire. On the pricier end for a sandwich like 14 - 17 but its worth it.

Yelp
Really great sandwich place, got the pork milanese and the murray turkey. Tasted so fresh and the combos are great! The food takes a little bit but it's worth it! The service was really nice and accommodating. The interior is nicely decorated. Would definitely come again!

Yelp
This place could turn me into a sandwich person (which I'm not). Stopped in for a quick lunch while visiting my daughter in Squirrel Hill. Looks like nothing from the outside, but super cute and cozy on the inside. Helpful and friendly staff. I had the Pitt beef sandwich and it was perfect. The bread, the horseradish, the beef, the onions. Everything was perfect. It was a decent sized sandwich too. My daughter got the special burrata BBLT. It was yummy and massive in size. Loved the potato salad and chickpea salad sides. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
This spot is so fabulous. I get why there's a crazy line out the door. The food is so good and they make basically everything from scratch. I really liked their Mr Orange, a chicken piri piri sandwich, and the turkey sandwich. I don't think you can go wrong with anything you order. They also use my favorite bread - Martins potato rolls and the Allegro hearth baguette. The space inside is small but I loved sitting in there when it was less busy since we went in between lunch and dinner. Such a gem!!

Yelp
Some of the best sandwiches around the burg!!! Fantastic lineup. We stopped in and tried 4 different sandwiches, pig wings, and the potato salad! Wow!!! My favorites were the Pitt Beef (classic roast beef, onions, horseradish), Madonia's Muffuletta (italian sandwich- full of meats, chopped olive salad was divine), the pig wings (so tender, flavorful, and unique), and the potato salad. But honestly- you can't go wrong with any of them!! Everything was awesome. Super kind and friendly owner and employees, and excellent service! Really cute little spot, decorated beautifully and eclectically. I can't wait to go back

Yelp
Popped in to grab lunch the other day. I'd give a 5th star here if my husband had liked his roast beef sammie more; my crabcake one (aka- "Mr Nice Guy") was awesome. The grilled lemon that comes inside that I squeezed on top was a bit overwhelming, but the crab was excellent. Not much filler. Back to my hub's sandwich - the "Pitt Beef" -- he said it was good but the sauce needed more horseradish, otherwise the beef was juicy. I thought it had toooooo many raw onions, but my husband was ok with it. The loaded sesame seed-topped buns used for both sammies were excellent - fresh & flavorful. We got one potato salad, and it was more than enough for both of us. Excellent - chunky, crunchy- yum! As others have said, this place - in the heart of Squirrel Hill - is extraordinarily small & popular, so we ordered online, and our order was ready when I walked in - exactly when they said it would be. Kind of a funky, eclectic vibe inside. There are just a couple of tables outside (& be warned, there's no shade, if it's a sunny day!), so takeout is your only real option. And a tip: grab LOTS -- I MEAN, LOTS --- or napkins! You're gonna need em. We'll definitely go back!

Yelp
This place had an interesting vibe. It reminded me of tropical Mexican country, but somehow they rocked it! There was only 2 tables for seating, so although we sat and ate this restaurant seemed like it was more for takeout. They did not have a very large menu; however every single item we ordered was phenomenal! Nothing wrong with doing what you do well! I respect a place that only serves food with this high of standards. We got the Mr Pig sandwich that was loaded up! The onions were sweet so they weren't too harsh, and the horseradish was also mild so it wasn't overpowering, just the perfect compliment. They have always-changing flavors of jerky that we got on our way out.... The intent was to save it for later but it was so delicious I think we almost finished before we got back home! Oh and I saved the best for last.... Drum roll please... the jerk chicken wings!! You get 6 to an order and they come fried and garnished with onion and cilantro. They had so much flavor and were nice and meaty. They came with a cilantro aioli that I thought was going to be weird but was surprisingly perfect. Stuntpig did not disappoint, I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Finally got to visit this place, and I'm giving it the most positive 3/5 I've ever given a business. Sandwiches were great, the orange chicken was stellar and my partner's crab cake sandwich was also solid. People working were friendly and attentive, space was relatively small with 2-3 tables to sit at. However, the portion was very SMALL and the price was very HIGH, given the size of portions and content. As a comparator you can get a similarly inventive sandwich at an unnamed place on Butler (something about a long story...) that's approximately twice the portion size and much more actual food content (ingredients, etc), and just as inventive. I realize the economy sucks, but it's just as crappy and depressing walking out of a place having paid $36 for two small sandwiches and having to look for additional food around the corner. Once again, love the concept but the prices just aren't reasonable in a place like Pittsburgh. Tried once, will likely frequent another place if I want a sandwich.

Yelp
So good! Loved this place as a food truck and love that they finally have a permanent location in Squirrel Hill. Solid service, food came quickly. Got the Mr. Orange and some of the potato salad. AMAZING burger/sandwich and some of the best potato salad I've ever had. 100/10

Yelp
A rotating menu of sandwiches that are interesting, nourishing and delicious. This is my first choice for eating in Squirrel Hill.

Alex J.

Yelp
Stunt Pig offers the best sandwich I've ever tasted. Can I call it Squirrel Hill's finest bite? I chose the 'lil Jawn sandwich, and it certainly didn't let me down. It featured roast pork marinated in Sicilian oregano, fennel, and orange, grilled broccoli rabe, sharp provolone, and hot pepper mayo, all pressed on a buttered Big Marty's sesame bun. When I say my cosmic chakra shifted and my taste buds were transformed, I'm not exaggerating. The service was outstanding, and my food arrived promptly and hot. My friend went for the Mr. Orange, consisting of pulled chicken, spicy Piri Piri sauce, briny cucumbers, and Chimichurri aioli. He had nothing but praise for it. Pitt Panthers, CMU Tartans- do yourself a favor and check out Stunt Pig. Their menu changes often, so make sure to try the favorites while you can!

Honest R.

Yelp
The two cooks who make your food in front of you do NOT wear gloves when making your food, they touch everything with their bare hands even after ringing you up/touching the register, they then go straight to touching your food. Very disgusting and unsanitary. Also the sandwiches are VERY overpriced, especially for how they taste. The puck duck is 100% not worth the $17 that it costs and is very dry. Save yourself the money and go somewhere else where you can get reasonably priced sandwiches that are actually GOOD

David L.

Yelp
Quite possibly the best sandwiches I've had! I had the Fez (Moroccan meatballs on a hoagie roll) and literally said "wow" after the first bite. The lil jawn (Italian pork with broccoli rabe) is also a personal favorite - I hope it makes it on the permanent menu. The Murray Turkey and Mr. Orange (pulled chx) are solid staples that I enjoy when their special sandwiches aren't on the menu. Overall - highly recommend.
