Dead Birds Are So Hot on Tasting Menus Right Now | Eater

"The aesthetic is branching beyond birds: one menu offered a deathly, showy presentation of fried piranha skin, signaling a move toward similarly literal 'just‑dead' animal presentations." - Hillary Dixler Canavan

I was in the area for a meeting and was rather hungry, so I drove for a few mins looking for a decent fast food that wasn’t the “typical” fried sandwiches and such and as I drove by this parking lot, I noticed all the cars and thought it must be decent, so we stopped in. They were very busy, but only a few people in line ahead of me and then the owner himself took our order. I asked him what’s good and he explained that his gyros and fries were amazing, so we went for them. That tzatziki was fresh and tasted so very good! The meat in the gyro was fresh and incredible and the each bite of everything was outstanding! That thing also weighed more than a pound – it was huge! The fries were excellent too, crispy, hot, and fresh! Service was outstanding, so was the food… Highly recommend coming here!!!

Google
This is by far the best sub spot in Virginia!!! The food definitely is worth the price! The Owner is very welcoming to customers and has a great relationship with regulars. As my first time coming I felt very welcomed and was given the best customer service I’ve ever received in my life! Definitely will be coming back weekly for this good food 😌

Google
When I come here, I always get the gyro. It’s delicious. The owner remembers us every time we come in even if it’s been months since he’s seen us. You will not find better customer service than at Sub Central. The food is delicious. When we’re in the area, we stop by and get a bite. The fries are good, too!

I have been going here since my daughter was just a little girl. She was like 5. She is now 28 years old, Jimmy has watched her grow from not even being able to get to the counter to now. He is always friendly and loves to pick with me and I welcome it. He is more like family to us! He always knows exactly what we want when we walk in the door, unless I decide to switch it up on him. 🤣🤣 We absolutely love Sub Central. Keep up the fantastic work Jimmy! Your friends, Brianne and Kara (the bus driver)

I was visiting relatives and decided to try Sub Central out because of the good ratings. I was not let down! The food was reasonably priced, the quantity was impressive and the taste was great! I will definitely visit there again soon.

Great place. My first time vista the area and I called in a order. The owner was very friendly over the phone (comped my fries) and in person. Food was great. I'll definitely eat here next time I'm in the area. Ps my son love your world famous fries 🍟 😋

I recently started with a company as a driver across the street from this sub shop. Several people kept telling me to try it, so I did. Originally, I came in for their Philly but seen they had gyros and it was freshly cut off the rack of lamb. I had to give it a try and I'm thankful that I did. It was one of the best Ive had. Large portions, great flavor and priced well. The owner was friendly, staff was polite and the place was clean. Well worth the money and I'd highly recommend giving it a try.

I've been coming here for many years. This is the only place I'll get a gyro. Best I've ever had. The steak and cheese is also very good. Employees are always polite and friendly.

Yelp
We stumbled upon Sub Central one weekend. We got a steak and cheese and were pleasantly surprised all around. We placed an order on the phone, was asked if we wanted everything on it (grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, and mayo), and it was ready in 10 minutes. We made it a combo (fries + drink) for $5. The sub was soft, not super heavy or greasy, and priced reasonably around $10. The fries were great too. The employees were friendly and the place was clean so we decided to eat in. There was a steady flow of customers, mostly doing take out. We'll definitely be back when we're in the area!

Yelp
This place is owned by a family member of the other Main Sub Central that used to be downtown Richmond. Its owner had told me about it. It didn't disappoint! The gyro is what I come for. Loads of meat, delicious tzatziki, totally satisfying. The staff are friendly and the place is clean and has a good seating space.

Yelp
I've been eating here for over 15 years and it's always the best. The cold cut is the best hot sub ANYWHERE. I moved from Richmond in 2015 but still visit several times a year and a visit to sub central is a must. The owner always remembers me. Asks about how we are. I saw "we" because my children have joined me throughout the years here and he asks how they are as well. The owners parent's cut the veggies fresh still today and he knows almost everyone who walks in. Fantastic dude! The cold cut is the freshest and tastiest hot sub. The mayo, meat, lettuce, tomatoes and onions have always been the same. The bread is toasted perfectly with a soft inner and crunchy outside. Steak and cheese is a staple as well and always stuffed full of meat and cheese. Fries are always hot, crispy and salted right. The ketchup is kept cold for you too. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Ok I went up to this place on a Friday night around 7:55pm.When I went there the guy locked the door as I was walking to it. I told him I've tried to called numerous of times and got no answer and also yall are scheduled to close @9pm which it was no where close to that time. I stood there and watched employees laugh and joke while me and others was outside upset about the unprofessional behavior that was displayed. It's very unfortunate that it had to happened especially when they get so much support from the neighborhood. DISAPPOINTED AND DISTASTEFUL

Yelp
Plain and simply put this was a d*mn good sub. I ordered using a food delivery app (Uber eats ) while I was at work probably paid a markup but whatever it is what it is, it has nothing to do with this. But whatever I paid it, and the possible app gouging took a backseat to the fact that the sub was BANGING. They did not skip on meat nor the toppings. The bread was just right, it didn't taste cheapo or stale. Also, I ordered a side of fries and in the comment section of the food delivery app I said "please please no salt on the fries" usually if I make a request like that in the app, it's never honored, they honored it. My only critique is: SERIOUSLY, y'all could've thrown in some napkins to help your girl out. I got sub juice on my shirt. I smelt..smelled ...??...I smelled like a musty under arm the rest of my day. My sub eating technique may or may not have anything to do with me needing napkins. I'm just saying it would've been nice. But I crushed that sub. I said I wasn't gonna eat the whole thing but I did. I ate half waited two hours ate the other half and was full 12 hours later. They gave you a lot of fries. I just wanted a couple 2-3 so I gave them to my coworkers. They liked that they were shoestring. If they were hot, they would've been awesome. But IMMATERIAL. The sub was the star of the show. Go get a sub! The next time I'm over there I'm getting a sub. 5 out of 5 stars would recommend

Yelp
Family owned business for almost 50 years. Food is fresh and tasty. You can't go wrong with the cheese steak, the Gyros, or any of the subs. Friendly staff. Super clean restaurant. I can't wait to go back for my sub fix.

Kevin M.

Yelp
I stopped at this place and got a cold sub sandwich because it reminded me of a spot from back home in Chicago. It was an awesome sandwich - hit the spot for sure! Definitely worth giving a try.

Yelp
Decent subs; decent prices. I've dropped in a couple of times and every time there's been a line. Fortunately the staff is amazing and prepares orders in no time. I recommend the chicken cheesesteak; it's filled to the brim with meaty-cheesey goodness. If I had one wish be granted it'd be that they're open on Sundays, because they're perfect for picking up food to take to the river, or a picnic or to one of the the nearby parks.

Yelp
I ordered a gyro and I have no complaints. It was delicious, service was quick and the guy behind the counter was very welcoming. A little pricey for the gyro meal but other then that, awesome.
google avatar

Breezy S.

Yelp
I had the Gyro with fries. Fries were perfect. The Gyro had real good flavors, and they're never selfish with the amount of meat. My only criticism is I think the meat needed a little more pepper, and the Gyro as a whole needed more veggies and sauce. Other than that, great job. Definitely would get again!!!

Rob B.

Yelp
Big delicious greasy Italian sub. But not quite NY/NJ style I've been missing. I'll try the gyro or meatball sub next time. It's a solid place.

Yelp
Amazing service! I always leave with a smile on my face, I recommend this place if you want good food

Yelp
Solid subs, onion rings and fries! Reasonable prices and really fast preparation. Made the subs by the time we got there but made fries and onion rings when I arrived (good ... better fresh!). All the subs are 12" and really big with plenty of meat! Probably could have used more provolone cheese on the steak and cheese as well as tszatiki sauce for the gyro. Both we chose to get without tomatoes but perfect otherwise (my wife likes extra mayo and banana peppers which those are a little extra - 35¢ I think). You could eat there but really seems intended for takeout. Just a little far to get home so the food gets a little not hot that's the only downside.

Yelp
Gyros are amazing Chicken wings are great Great service All the other subs are awesome as well Baklava Buffalo Chicken Wings

Yelp
I was leaving an event and stopped in to pick up lunch. I got a gyro with extra tzatziki sauce and a steak & cheese with mushrooms and hot peppers. I have to wait to get home to dive in but just the aroma it's putting off, I know it's gonna be good

Yelp
I went to Sub Central on Midlothian trnpke 3 times in 1 week and I live atleast 30 minutes away. They make the subs to order & I have special requests that are always quirky, but whatever I request they handle it beautifully! I love the steak & cheese combo, it's so fresh, the lettuce & onions are AMAZING! I can't wait to go back again !!!

Yelp
Sub Central. I always thought it was a club where you pick up people who want to be abused and dominated and stuff. I guess I was wrong. Sub Central sells a pretty decent Gyro with tons of meat. For the size that it is, it's not too expensive, but I wouldn't get it again. Especially considering you can't get a smaller version of it. If they sold a mini or half version I'd be way more suited to it. I think with the size and how filling it is, it's good for poorer folks who want to get very full on Gyro. It's in a poor-ish area. The problem is that the meat tasted a bit more like hamburger than Gyro. It wasn't too flavourful. Good and hearty but not amazing at all. Very meaty, and not enough sauce to wash it down. Cool people though.

Yelp
I had such a great experience here for my first time! I really want a cheesesteak sub and saw that this place had great reviews. I walked in and was greeted by someone called "TheBoss" (he may be the owner too!) and he was so so nice -- even gave me a free drink for being a first-timer. I got the cheesesteak sub and fries and I'm not disappointed, it's soooo good and isn't super greasy. I'll be coming back for sure.

Yelp
I moved to Richmond in 2012 from NY and found Sub Central not too far from my home. When visiting the establishment, I always ordered the gyro or the grilled chicken sub. I had always had a pleasant experience when I visited the restaurant. I have read reviews from others in the past with most of them being great reviews and at other times not so great. The reviews were never in regards to others having concerns with the food but in regards to customer service. I never thought that I would have a negative experience, until yesterday. Yesterday I went in the mindset of ordering 2 gyros and a chicken sub. I asked the manager/owner if it was possible to make the gyros separate. I did not want any of the items placed on the pita bread as the person that it was for was not going to be able to eat it until later on in the night and I did not want it to be soggy. i asked the manager/owner if it was possible to separate the meat, pita bread and vegetables and the sauce. He stated that he could but that it would be an extra fee. when I inquired as to why, he became upset and stated " I put everything on the pita bread. you want me to make an exception for you, but you don't want to pay". i then told him that the sandwich was already over 11, which really made him upset. that's when he told me that people come from all northern va to buy his food. Instead of going back and fourth with him, I left the store. I agree he does have great food, as the items that i have only tried from there, however regardless of how great your food is, if your attitude and customer service is poor then it doesn't matter. Maybe my $30.00 that I was going to spend last night may not have put a dent in his store, the fact of the matter is it is $30.00 less than he had at closing last night. After my experience with him last night, I will never visit his establishment again. I don't know how much good this review will do, but i hope he understands that customer service comes first and regardless of how good your food taste, if your attitude is poor then the taste of your food doesn't count. Its all about customer service which he did not show yesterday.

Yelp
Got delivered via Uber Eats. Large sandwiches, I'll give them that but not a good Philly cheesesteak. Who puts tomatoes in this?? I asked for no tomato and still got it. Also asked for peppers and didn't get them..ok wait, I got a couple banana peppers. Who uses that in a Philly cheesesteak? I was confused. No Cheese Whiz option. Then there was the dry meat. Fried to a crisp. I do not want crispy ribeye, do u? Fries were gross. No thanks. Just poorly executed all around. Jersey Mike's does a way better job if you're craving a cheesesteak outside of Philly

Yelp
So I've worked over Midlothian Turnpike for over a year now and it's my first time here. One of my colleagues eats here all the damn time and said I'm taking you today. He got the steak Philly and I got the chicken Philly w/ a side of fries! First off these foot longs unlike Subway gives you every inch haha like what I did there? Don't get me started on the toppings.. chicken galore with the works.. so damn good! The fries nice and hot and most importantly plentiful! I just wish they offered seasoned salt or even old bay to take them up a notch You definitely have a repeat customer!

Yelp
This is a hidden gem for me. Omg! I had a craving for a Italian sausage sub and I definitely found it here. It was everything I wanted and so much more. Onions and peppers hot and fresh delicious. My friend bought the gyro on a sub roll with cheese. The picture doesn't do it justice I tasted a slice of the meat and it was also delicious. I definitely will be going back really soon. Plus, there wasn't a long wait for my order. The staff was very friendly as well.

Yelp
The food here is prepared fresh and is delicious. I got the chicken philly combo. Nicely seasoned, juicy and tender. Large portions. Friendly and helpful staff.

Yelp
I have never been to the location on Main st, BUT the Midlothian turnpike is great. Cheese steak is a great choice, I add mushrooms onions, tomatoes and add ketchup and hold the lettuce.

Yelp
I have only eaten three items at this restaurant, but they are outstanding! The Philly Cheese Steak & Gryo are the best I've had in the Richmond area. They are absolutely stuffed with delicious meat and fillings. The onion rings are very good as well, and the service is outstanding. They have it down to a science at this location.

Yelp
About a month ago, I was having a craving for a decent cheesesteak/steak and cheese in the Richmond area. While traveling along this road, I stumbled across Sub Central. Two and a half years ago, I visited Main Sub Central in downtown Richmond and had nothing but positive reviews for the quality of food there. How did my experience go? To find out, read below: The Good: Opening Hours- On this particular day, I left work around 10:00am and this restaurant conveniently opens at 10:00am. Usually places are still serving breakfast or waiting to serve lunch during that time. But I love eating my lunch and dinner early. Service- I called in my order over the phone and my order was ready sooner than they said it would be. It was hot and I could smell the grease through the bag which was a plus. Price/Portion- I believe I ordered an 11 inch Steak and Cheese "all the way" which meant there was more food than I could finish on my first round. The Sub itself was under $7 which is cheaper than a sub of that caliber would be at a Quizos or Subway in the Downtown area. Taste of Meat- From the flavors of the grease and steak, I could tell that the meat was of decent quality and not something that was prepackaged and frozen 3k miles away. The onions and cheese perfectly complimented the steak as well. The Not So Good: Having Lettuce and Tomato on the Sub- This is a nitpick but to me the lettuce and tomato flavors had taken away from the integrity of the Steak and Cheese. Some may like lettuce and tomato on their subs and I never had it on my sub until this day but I will not make that mistake again. Overall- I like the service, the price of the subs and the taste. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice sandwich shop. FOUR STARS.

Yelp
The Sub Central on Midlothian Turnpike in Richmond, VA is ! I said is the best place in the Richmond area to get any kind of sub that you can dream of. Real meat! Soft bread! Customer service is always off the Chain! The owner makes everyone feel welcome and he knows most of the regulars by name. Folk really feel special when they visit. I know that I do! I pray that God will continue to bless this restaurant and all of the employees! The employees share the same spirit of the Owner! That is rare these days. I know because I own a seafood franchise.

Yelp
Best gyro & philie cheese steak in RVA, DMV. Enough said. Good food. You can't go wrong with anything they make. You can taste the love. Owner is a great guy. Tell me Vadderung sent you

Mel C.

Yelp
The reviews on yelp made this place look tasty. A Philly sub for less than $8 bucks, I would be crazy not to give it a try. This "hole in the wall" was not what I expected. Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed some amazing cuisines in places that aren't the highest class in appearance, but the food out numbers the look appeal. The Philly cheese sub was nothing extraordinary. The meat on the bread was a bit dry and could have used a bit more cheese. Unfortunately, I was a disappointed.
google avatar

Melva F.

Yelp
I tried once and you wouldn't believe how excited I was to try this place. I don't know what type of meat they used but it didn't taste like regular beef. It had a weird taste to the point that I had to throw away the sub. I like to support local, hole-in-the-wall type business, but I can't support this one. I never had such a bad sub in my life!

T M.

Yelp
This is definitely what I would consider a good option. This is the kind of spot that comes through when you don't know exactly what you want to eat or what you wanted was not available. In the category of Old Reliable or Old Faithful. We know it's not Gourmet but it will definitely do the job!

Timothy P.

Yelp
This place is top shelf, the Owner is always there and very attentive. Always knows your order and perfect every time. I will drive past 100 sub shops to get my Gyro here. If you find a better one it will be Greece.

Yelp
I had a taste for a up north Philly, cheese steak hoagie. I was about 16 miles away when I searched Yelp for a Cheese steak. 4 and a half stars 2nd generation sub shop! Yes, they had my attention enough to make me drive 16 miles and get the truth. Sub Central is the TRUTH! From the moment I pulled into the parking lot until I finished my sub and fries NON STOP BUSINESS. That says a lot about a business. The owner took my order and explained the menu, it's fast food but they had some specials going. Me: Cheese steak hoagie please. Owner: what's that? Me: sorry I'm use to ordering up North, that's a cheese steak with all the "fixin" (lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, onion and pickles) Owner: Oh, you want a cheese steak with "everything". Me: What's everything? Owner: lettuce, tomatoes, onion, mayo and cheese Me: Ok, "Cheese steak with everything" LOL, yes that's a Hoagie. And it was pretty close to a Philly hoagie with the exception of the bread. That's the only thing the south can't get right outside of Philadelphia...The Bread! The Hoagie was great, foot long, great steak meat, chopped well, and you better be hungry because its a LOT! The fries were average, palatable but nothing special. I did enjoy my sub enough to return however. Until next time, another fatboy chronicles adventure.

Winifred W.

Yelp
It was ok. Appreciated the fast service. However, I tried to order online as it was advertised. I paid for my order. Then when I went to pick up I was informed they don't participate with that online ordering service (via Yelp). Yep got me my money back. We had to order at the restaurant which caused a longer wait but the food was decent.

Yelp
Drove down to Portsmouth and on the way back had to make a special trip to get the best Gyro and shoe string fries I have ever eaten. I have tried other locations but don't even waste your time or money.

Yelp
New to the area and have been on a quest to find a fantastic lunch place (and suffering the mediocre known names in the meantime). No more. I found Sub Central. Sub Central is a little establishment off to the side of a not-so-attractive highway. But you'll only mind that once. This place has a small but varied menu, excellent ingredients, American and Greek flavours, its owner right there, character and zero parking issues. My first time in was a juicy toasted Club Sub that easily could have been for two people. Orders are taken at the counter and the choice is yours to either stay or go. This place is well worth losing my primo office parking spot AND the 8 minute drive there and back. I'm all in!
google avatar

Cory W.

Yelp
I was a bit disappointed in the cheese steak. The reviews were all so good, but the cheese steak I received had a lot of gristle in it. The bites without gristle were good, but I had a hard time eating the sub.
google avatar

Duane P.

Yelp
Very clean upon entry. Was greeted with a smile and great customer service. I had the meatball sub which came toasted. The bread was light and crispy, but soft on the inside. The fillings were hot and delicious. I will be back to try some of the other menu options.
google avatar

Yelp
First time here and the gyro is great. I was looking for a good gyro place since I moved to RVA, and finally I found it.

Lisa W.

Yelp
The location on Midlothian Turnpike is amazing. The food is always good and the service is very good as well. Never a long wait. I eat here 2X a week sometimes. I want to try the Gyro next but the steak and cheese and chicken philly are outstanding.
google avatar

Yelp
I first noticed this place one day while I was driving around familiarizing myself with the area. At one time I think this was a KFC because the roof has that high "steeple" shape that used be to part of their older restaurant designs. Anyway... Today I decided to have lunch here and I'm glad I did. The prices are a little high, but you get a very large sandwich for $5-$6. They also have sweet tea and being from Atlanta, that makes me happy. They make a delicious steak and cheese sandwich and also have cold subs and gyros. Look for monthly specials that are advertised in their windows. Good food, quick service, and very friendly people.
google avatar

Larry S.

Yelp
Got a steak and cheese sandwich for the first time and right away realized it was the best one I've ever had.
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
This is another story of "I've driven by here a hundred times and never stopped." Well, this time I stopped and am glad I did. It doesn't hurt that they were right next to an auto parts store and I needed wiper blades either. Making a submarine sandwich is a simple concept but restaurants approach it differently. Some places put classic combinations of ingredients on a roll to form your vanilla (type, not flavored) sub sandwich. Within this category, there are levels of quality, from a gas station to a real sub shop (Sub Central, Jersey Mike's, etc.) Others go exotic/crazy and combine non-traditional ingredients or over the top quantities onto a sub-shaped sandwich, trying to trigger an appearance on a cable food network. For my sub, I usually prefer the former and that's what I got from Sub Central. They have a nice selection of cold subs, toasted subs and sandwiches off the grill. I had a club sandwich, which fell into the toasted sub column. There was plenty of ham, turkey and bacon, and the bread was very fresh. I had to drive 25 minutes before eating it so I want to go back and have one that's still warm and toasty, but my well-traveled sub was still delicious! I also want to go back to try their gyro. I saw someone eating one while I waited for my sandwich (I didn't stare, I just glanced) and it looked delicious.

Yelp
Where to begin! I have been driving down midlothian for almost 10 years, and never have I payed attention to this place. My aunt has been coming here for a while, she introduced me to their delicious, mouth watering, juicy, decadent, and did I mention delicious chicken philly with extra onions writing about it is making my mouth water. It truly is great, the people are nice, and friendly. I also ordered fries, and onion rings. OMG the onion rings are freaking the bomb. I swear its like eating pancake battered onion rings, they were so so soooo delicious. I feel like all i am saying is delicious, delicious, delicious. THERE ARE NO OTHER WORDS TO DESCRIBE IT. I swear I am so not stuck up at all. When my aunt and I first arrived i was like "ummm really, i am starving and you decided to take me here". Now i am hooked, seriously do not let the location or the way it looks from the outside fool you. They are so clean inside, before i order food i always go to the bathrooms to see if owners keep things clean. They are super duper clean ( talking about the ladies room, idk about mens). I really recommend them. My only complaint is there is no unsweetened iced tea, other than that it was fantastic. Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
I've been on my salad kick lately and the grilled chicken salad is everything. I get mine with the house dressing and no olives. Today I got a bbq chicken salad with one house dressing and no olives...GOODNESS. I also, eat other items and they're all good. Not only that, the staff and owner are great.

Yelp
I love everything about this place. I just received my order and the food portions are generous. As a huge fry lover, I was very happy to see that the fries were endless. The sub is enough to feed two- I'm eating half and saving the rest for my boyfriend when he gets home from work. My experience with the staff was awesome, too. I somehow fucked up my order through UberEATs and one of the workers called me to confirm my order. Def glad I gave it a try.

Danny Y.

Yelp
This is definitely a case where you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. The building looks a bit rough on the outside but inside the staff is super friendly, efficienct, and helpful. The food comes in large portions and is absolutely delicious. Our group of 3 had the gyro and 2 steak and cheese subs all of which came out piping hot and very quickly. Definitely be back here next time we're in the area.

Yelp
I've lived in Richmond for 42 years and this is by far the best cheesesteak I've had in Richmond. I've been past this little shop countless times but never stopped in. So this week I've been over this side of town in a training class and based on their other reviews here on Yelp, I figured I would try it out. I'm very glad I did. They have a pretty good sized menu for a small sandwich shop including salads and a few spaghetti dishes. I overhead the owner telling another customer that his father opened up the place about 36 years ago and it has been family owned since then. I ordered the cheesesteak and added fried onions, peppers and mushrooms. There was only one size and it was huge. The star of the show was the steak and there was plenty of it. The steak was chopped fine and very tender and mixed into it was the onions, peppers and mushrooms. The sub also included lettuce, mayo, onion and cheese but only a small amount as to not overwhelm the steak. The sub roll was lightly toasted and warm but still soft on the outside and paired nicely with the ingredients inside. Given the size of the sub, I did not order any sides and I'm glad I didn't. I couldn't finish the sub and ended up taking a little less then half home. My only small issue with the place was the drink selection. I'm not a Diet Coke person and the only other non-sweet drink option was water. They had tea but it was sweet (on a side note, I did try the tea to confirm it was sweet, and for sweet tea, it was quite delicious. Fresh and VERY sweet) I'm anxious to try the gyro as it looked really good, but that will have to wait until next time.
