Boston-Area Beer and Brewery News, Summer 2020 | Eater Boston

"Born from Neil and Amy Kade’s long interest in brewing and inspired by metal music and a ‘life is to be lived now’ ethos, Gilded Skull released its first beer, Gilded Empire (a New England IPA brewed at Castle Island in Norwood), is distributed statewide via Craft Collective, and the founders plan to release new beers every two to three months with the possibility of opening a brick-and-mortar brewery down the line." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

We hosted my husband’s birthday party here and it was perfect. From the very beginning Dave was quick to respond, He was even messaging me while he was away on vacation! Planning with him was hassle free. The packages were affordable which was a big plus. The brewery is a beautiful hangout spot if you’re indoors or out in the beer garden. The brewing room is where we had my husband’s party which Dave had spotless before we had to set up. We live only minutes away from the brewery and I am so happy that we found it, this is definitely going to be one of our new hangout spots. I would recommend this place to anyone looking to host a party or just to have a night out! Thanks again Dave!

David from Subculture is an amazing owner and master brewer! His IPA's are on point as well as everything on the menu. The American stout and Coffee kolsch were amazing. I wish I knew they were here sooner. I would highly recommend this brewery not only for their fantastic beers but their attention to detail and overall experience. I would give them an 11 out of ten based on both the product and owner interaction. If you have not been here, you will not be disappointed! If you are in the area or even if you are not, it is worth the drive! Cheers!

First time at Subculture and I was very impressed. The owner was very engaging and proud of his work. The beer was very good across the IPAs and Stouts which I tried. On Thurs they have vinyl night and people came and played their own albums and enjoyed great beer. Definitely going back.

FLORENCE: Subculture Artisan Ales has the most peaceful design of a brewery we have seen and we were instantly calmed by the vibes upon walking in. Brie loves it too and was impressed by the various seating options from the bar, to beautiful wood tables and comfy chairs, a cozy corner couch area with games and books, and even a large outdoor space with a tent and heaters. Leashed and friendly dogs are allowed at all the spots! Our bartender, Tom, was awesome with helping us choose excellent beers that met our tastes like the GrunGrin wheat, Kinkora Kolsh, and Milt’s Mild dark. There is a bunch more on tap and the non-alcoholic sodas are fantastic too including mango carrot, rootbeer, and cran-citrus sodas. Browsing around we appreciated the TVs to watch the game, the record exchange bin, and the elegant beauty of the beer glasses. David, the head brewer and owner, said hello to us and has years of brewing experience in Chicago and we are so lucky to have back in NJ operating a wonderful place 1 block from the Delaware River. FYI, you may see a brewery cat roaming around and, most of the time, are kept out of the tasting room. Street parking is available, dock your boat at the Florence Twp boat ramp and walk over, or visit by light rail. Follow them on social media for other events!

Stopped here on a Saturday night for a beer or two. Left 2.5 hours later. Amazing beers, great tasting room, love the aesthetic. David is a fun, friendly proprietor. The band that was there, Sunday's Afternoon, was very good. I couldn't pull myself away. Will definitely be back! Check it out!

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Subculture Artisan Ales, a fantastic new brewery in town, and I can't wait to share my experience! From the moment I stepped inside, I was greeted by a warm and cozy atmosphere, with a rustic charm that perfectly complemented their extensive craft beer selection.

Yelp
We booked a bonsai event here and I was so glad we did. It's a little over an hour away and by far one of the most inviting places we have been to. The bartender was super friendly and we shared our pizza with him (they dont serve food so we ordered a hot honey from a local place he recommended and it was so good). The ales were so good. My husband and I tried several and they were all delicious. The atmosphere is gorgeous inside and out. The clientele was great when we were there also. The owner was there for a bit and was super nice and welcoming. The outside is so pretty. We wish this was closer we'd be there all the time but we will definitely be back.

Yelp
Such a sweet space! Allie was a charming bartender. And we so enjoyed chatting with the brewer/owner David. His Gungrin German style Weissbier was soooo tasty! Go! Enjoy!

Yelp
Cats, cats, cats! As a beer enthusiast, Subculture is on the list for a revisit. Their warm, welcoming location offers some incredibly tasty and fun beers. Our bartender, Nancy, was amazing! She was so friendly, and she even allowed us a peek at the resident brewery cats, Calypso and Cashmere. Street parking was aplenty on the day we visited. I was a big, big fan of the Burton Reynolds English Ale - I mean, who can resist that mustache? The Bob Loblaw was another hit. I love a brewery that offers varied sized offerings. They have a fun reading nook with great books and beautiful natural lighting. This would be a really nice place to gather with a few friends, but it's not a HUGE space, so timing would be of the essence. I loved my visit to Subculture, and I look forward to seeing Calypso and Cashmere again soon!

Yelp
Wow. Wow. Wow. If you are a connoisseur of great beer or just want a cool spot to visit off the beaten path then this is your place. As an avid home brewer and someone who travels hundreds of miles for great beer I am happy to say I discovered some of the best brews in the state, or dare I say the US are right here in Florence, NJ created and served by a humble award winning brewer.

Yelp
My wife, dog and I were out and about for Christmas shopping and decided to take a drive here and we were not disappointed. It's a smaller, but nicely renovated space that looks brand new. I saw some of the other reviews and would assume the lighting is better now because it didn't bother my wife who has bad light sensitivity. My wife said she could tell the place had a woman's touch - the floor, the walls, the cleanliness of the bathrooms!! Haha. They also had Christmas music playing so it was very calming. I got the Floressence IPA (x2) and the Hidden Loop IPA. Both were tasty, I felt Floressence was a bit fuller and really hit my taste buds nicely. Hidden Loop was also good and my wife enjoyed their Pilsner. As a Hazy IPA obsessed beer drinker, I was happy with what they had to offer in that realm. We found out later it was a family business which is so cool. Most were onsite enjoying a beer and socializing. I am passionate about craft beer and wish this place all the success in the world. David and his sister and their father were some of the nicest owners I have met. Looking forward to coming back in the warmer months as well.

Yelp
This is a top-notch little Brewery in a small town in South Jersey. To start with the beers are excellent, crisp and flavorful ipas without a heavy overtaste to them. The staff is exceptionally friendly, and the owner / head Brewer is hanging out at the bar with everyone else talking. Everyone here is really nice, friendly and welcoming Add to that two adorable cats that are very friendly and loving and soft. I just wished I lived down in that area so I could go more often. I cannot say enough nice things about Subculture Artisan Ales. I can say next time I am in the area I will definitely be there.

Yelp
We had a good time grabbing a beer here. It's very unassuming on the outside but plenty of street parking available. The beer was really good and priced comparable to other breweries in the area. They also have an outside area which looks like it would be great on a nice day. No food nearby so bring some snacks with you.

Yelp
Stopped by with my family and our puppy. The decor is very natural and not at all overwhelming. Lots of plants and greenery and the tables are beautiful wood and resin. I enjoyed the Bob'N for Apples Carmel apple IPA. We brought pizza from Rocco's, which is very close by. The beertender was very friendly and helpful. They offer 5oz tasters which is great if you want to try a few different brews. We will be back!

Yelp
This is the newest addition to the South Jersey brewery scene, just a block from the banks of the Delaware River in Florence, NJ. It's kind of in the middle of nowhere in a small nondescript building. Several blocks from the closest food options. What a surprise to walk into a bright space packed with plants and decorative German steins. Small but super cozy and welcoming vibe. My girlfriend stopped in on a Saturday a week after they opened, and the place was packed. We were lucky to get two seats at the bar. They only had about seven or eight beers, but we thoroughly enjoyed every one of them and look forward to coming back for more to see what else they come up with. They had several bartenders pouring beer and everyone was super friendly. We will be back!

Yelp
So cute! Had no idea this adorable neighborhood brewery even existed. Probably because this isn't my neighborhood haha. For real though I'm an IPA lover, the hazier the better. Check out my photo....i had to keep telling myself...slow down girl this isn't juice! Ken was pouring for us, he was lovely. This brewery is cute, quaint, clean and the beer is great! If you're in the area stop in! Support local Jersey beer.

Yelp
Such a great new brewery. I wish took photos of the interior because it was such a modern cool vibe. There were some games and soon they will have outdoor seating. The lager I had was delicious, they also had a stout, IPAs, and an ale.

Yelp
Been here several times. Beer is excellent. The Florescence Hazy IPA is great especially good. They have periodic food trucks and events.

Yelp
We've been to Subculture many times since they have opened and have always been impressed with their beer selection and service. We recently used Subculture to host a birthday party for our son. Dave, the owner, was so helpful with answering questions and making sure that we had everything we needed for our large event. On the day of, Dave and his employees exceeded our expectations. Our guests raved about the atmosphere, service and above all, the amazing beer. We are very happy to have this gem so close to home and look forward to many more trips to Subculture in the future!

Yelp
If you're a craft beer nerd like me, this place is a must stop. The place is small but the beers on tap were excellent. The hospitality was great too. If I'm in the area again, I will definitely be stopping in.

Yelp
Great brewery! Beer is delicious! They have something for everyone. Nice ambiance, friendly staff and just really enjoyable. Highly recommend checking it out.

Yelp
You can taste the care and creativity that went into creating the unique beers of this new brewery in the heart of Florence. There were six different offerings when I visited with my date and we tried two of them. "Silos" a delicious American Stout, dark, rich, and full of a chocolate/coffee flavor; all the things I love from a Stout. I couldn't ask for more. My date ordered the "Erste" a German Helles Lager. Light, smooth, and easy to drink. The beers were delicious, affordable, and offered in 3oz, 8oz, and 16oz pours. There are a few small tweaks that would improve the overall experience for customers: 1) Lighting. We almost didn't go in because this place is way too bright. We counted about 32 recessed lighting fixtures in a space that only needs ten. The lighting felt like daylight during date night. Warmer bulbs at half the intensity would be a reason to stay longer. 2) Noise. This is always a problem for restaurants and bars, but when we were there the place had about 16 people and was very loud. Some type of sound buffering on the walls or ceiling would help. Anything to absorb some sound. 3) No growlers. We asked if they filled growlers, and at the present time that is not offered. We were told the beers will be sold in cans in the future. 4) Merch. Tried to purchase a t-shirt, but they didn't have my size. Glad the merch is popular, but they lost a sale. Overall this is a wonderful brewery and I can't wait to go back and taste their new offerings. For those new to this type of business, breweries are prohibited from selling food, but you can certainly bring your own. It's also not a sports bar, so don't expect to see screens with the game on. Sit down and enjoy their unique brews. We certainly did!
