The Best Coffee Shops in West Palm Beach | Eater Miami

"Once famous on Instagram for its rainbow prism wall with a rainbow-shirted Albert Einstein, Subculture has bounced back after founding partner Sean Scott’s exit in May 2020. Now with four locations across Palm Beach County, guests can still visit the original location, just half the size, on Clematis conveniently close to the Brightline train station." - J. Miller

Just had an amazing time at Subculture Coffee! The atmosphere was great! I was there with friends, and we had a good time playing with some of the games at the table. The seating are comfy, making it a nice place to relax. Our service was top-notch—shoutout to Kahli (hope I got the name right!) for crafting the most delicious latte and being so friendly. This spot is an absolute gem for studying, chilling, or just enjoying a delightful drink while waiting for your ride. Will definitely spot by when I'm in the area again!

Google
I love this coffee shop! It is beautiful and super well lit. I prefer this option to the gardens location, but both are great for coffee and relaxing. The drink options are numerous and there are two lovely bay windows to read in once you have a yummy drink and scrumptious snack. There are outlets and lots of space…. It’s perfect for work and play! Not only is the space great, the employees are fantastic: Lola was nothing short of amazing and helped me with deciding what to order, and took the time to go through the options for food and drink. I would come back JUST for her! I had a chai latte and an almond croissant — super yummy. There’s street parking and a parking garage right next door, make sure you check out subculture coffee whenever you’re in city place / downtown WPB.

Google
First time at Subculture in West Palm Beach! I love the Delray location so decided to try this one as well. Cool vibe although not quite as large but still has the same great service, coffee and food!

Google
My recent visit to Subculture Coffee on Clematis Street in West Palm Beach was probably not worth the trip. The mocha I ordered was quite decent - rich chocolate notes balanced nicely with their house espresso blend, not too sweet but satisfying enough to hit the spot. Though definitely seemed overpriced, adding $1 for alternative milk and $1 for ice. What really stood out was Akil's exceptional service. I was in a pinch, riding in a Lyft and running late, so I called ahead to place my order. Akil was incredibly accommodating and took my order over the phone without hesitation. There was a small mix-up (I had asked for a blended coffee but received an iced one instead), but his friendly attitude and willingness to help a customer in a rush more than made up for it. The atmosphere has that perfect local coffee shop vibe that makes Subculture a standout on Clematis. Whether you're looking for a quick caffeine fix or a place to settle in with your laptop, this spot delivers quality without pretension.

After hopping off the early morning Brightline train, it was a short walk to the coffee shop. My veggie breakfast burrito was excellent. The generous filling of egg, cheese and veggies was wrapped in a light, flaky crust. The dining space has a cheerful and unique decor. The locals must agree, as there was a steady stream of customers while I was eating. I may try to time it for an afternoon snack before I catch the train back to Orlando this evening.

Google
I love what I get . Chai tea latte oat milk amazing. All the pastries look amazing. I just can’t eat or drink milk from the cow or any animal in any presentation. And we need more options like that in all the coffee places 😁

Google
Very nice coffee shop in the heart of downtown West Palm Beach. Always friendly service, delicious drinks and food. Never had a bad experience. Parking is very convenient.

Google
nice coffee shop. coffee was good. food was good. terrible place to sit and enjoy coffee thought. Seems like a homeless hangout out front. people sleeping in chairs , feet on tables like it’s their personal backyard patio.

Yelp
Nestled on Clematis Street in Downtown West Palm Beach, Subculture Coffee offers a unique and welcoming escape from the city. The ambiance is dark yet cozy, creating an intimate setting ideal for relaxation, catching up with friends, or getting some work done. The charming atmosphere is complemented by the exceptional customer service. The staff, particularly the girl who attended us, went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience. She kindly offered a sample of the Iced Superfruit Tea before we decided to purchase, which was a thoughtful touch. The tea was delicious and the perfect refreshment for the hot South Florida weather. My husband and I also indulged in two empanadas: one filled with Squash Chickpea Curry and the other with Pork and Pineapple. Both options were a delightful surprise with their unusual flavor combinations. However, the highlight for me was undoubtedly the Pork and Pineapple empanada. The savory and sweet pairing was executed to perfection. If you find yourself in West Palm Beach, a visit to this coffee shop is an absolute must.

Yelp
Hi everyone. This is my oat milk latte from subculture. I really enjoyed it. I find that the experience I have when patronizing subculture has changed dramatically over the years. The services is always nice. The baristas are professional, and they know their stuff; they also seem to enjoy working there. The food quality is still pretty aight although there's not as much fresh to order going on as there was back in the day. I miss those kinds of food selections. So there's nothing I can really highlight or complement except that they do make tasty empanadas with a nice variety of fillings. The ambience is kind of dark and moody where poets would seem to be hanging out lol. (that's coming from a life long poet by the way.) But yeah, the ambience isn't like it used to be; a little more vibrant and lot more artsy and family friendly. And I kinda miss that about it. But they still make a mean latte.

Yelp
Located on Clematis Street, Subculture Coffee is prime and central for those visiting WPB. My friend and I came to Subculture Coffee as we wanted to try something new - and also because our hotel coffee was so bad that morning. We decided to give it a try since it was right next door to where we were having lunch at. Walking in, the coffee shop had a wide variety of items to choose from. They had breakfast items, pastries, coffee, teas, and also some refrigerated items like alcoholic drinks. My friend got the toasted coconut latte and I got a caramel latte with almond milk. Both were REALLY great and very smooth. Getting here was really easy and there is plenty of street parking! Definitely check it out if you're in the area.

Yelp
Got a cappuccino with almond milk, was very good. Wanted to add chaga but unfortunately they were out which is the only reason I gave a 4 star. Hope to give it a try again this vacation if they get chaga back. Service was overall friendly

Yelp
Subculture Coffee Roasters is a gem of a coffee shop with a chill, dark atmosphere perfect for unwinding or working. With a diverse menu offering everything from coffee and tea to alcoholic beverages, there's something for everyone. On a particularly hot day, I visited craving a cold brew, only to find they were out. However, the staff immediately suggested an iced coffee with an extra shot as an alternative. This level of customer service truly sets Subculture Coffee Roasters apart; both the barista and the cashier were exceptionally kind, enhancing our overall experience. The coffee was delicious, and I also tried two unique empanadas: the butternut squash chickpea curry and the spicy pineapple pork. These unexpected flavor combinations were not only intriguing but also incredibly tasty.

Yelp
Really good coffee. Kind of dark and cluttered cafe which was less than inviting. I came for the coffee and it delivered.

Yelp
Ok, this may be my new favorite coffee shop of all time! The inside is SO cool with art work and sculptures. They have sofas and tables so you can choose what type of mood you feel like when you get there and as a bonus, they have board games!! I started following them on social media and they have weekly trivia nights which I will definitely be partaking in!
google avatar

Amanda A.

Yelp
They have recently updated the outside. So there's quite a bit of seating outside and it's very cute. I do like the avocado toast here. But I do suggest that if you do not like a lot of everything but the bagel seasoning and the olive oil to request it on the side. I have noticed that the times that I have forgotten to request it on the side that it's drenched in the seasoning and in the oil.

Yelp
What an amazing place!! This is truly a great coffee place and I highly recommend going there. We stopped by during our drive through and grabbed a coffee and a small snack. Even though it was really busy, the entire crew was so friendly and welcoming! Outside and indoor seating is equally great and a great hangout spot for even bigger groups!
google avatar

Alexandra K.

Yelp
Incredible quality coffee and great outdoor seating. Talented baristas that are friendly. Perfect location for a nice walk afterwards too.
google avatar

Yelp
Everything was good!! I mean my açaí bowl could've used less granola but overall I enjoyed my bowl, croissant, and iced latte. Great music playlist!!! Cozy space.
google avatar

Jamie F.

Yelp
I really liked and enjoyed my coffee it has a wonderfully delicious robust flavor with like hints of chocolate and I fully enjoyed it. Everyone working was kind and with a smile. The atmosphere in here seems really, it's small inside but cozy. I'm just not a fan of clematis or busy area in general. I'll stick to going to the Jupiter or Gardens location. I stopped while I was up this way.
google avatar

Kirsten W.

Yelp
Super cute coffee shop! I love the decor and the music selection. It gives alternative vibes. My barista was an older gentleman. I wish I would have caught his name because he was just wonderful! He had a smile on his face and his energy was very upbeat even though I visited at night. I stayed to study for a few hours and saw him greet every customer with the same enthusiasm he gave me. The seating pillows in the couch area are a bit uncomfortable, but I was pleased to find a table and an electrical outlet very quickly. The hours are also so convenient for night owls (10pm closing).
google avatar

Amanda D.

Yelp
When asked where to get coffee near the Brightline station we were told to stop here. Walking in they had these side doors open to a huge second room, not that we could go in there because there was stuff everywhere and it was a mess. Why would they not be utilizing that space? Or keep the door closed? Coffee hoarders nightmare. For coffee, the place was good. Not the best matcha latte I've ever had but it was okay. I'm mostly upset about the Breakfast Biscuit I purchased. First off, it was $11. I'm from nyc, this is a crime. How in the hell is a premade biscuit with a egg and half a piece of bacon with some shredded cheese that is then heated up poorly $11. Honestly though, if it was good I could excuse the price but it wasn't worth it at all. The biscuit itself was the best part of the sandwich. The sad half a piece of bacon we got on the entire sandwich was absolutely raw in the middle and had just a tiny bit of the outside edge kind of cooked due to heating up. Bacon won't cook like that, especially when you just throw the entire sandwich in a toaster oven. The egg was fluffy but tasteless. Overall, just skip this!
google avatar

Bill P.

Yelp
Local coffee shop with eclectic atmosphere. I had an ice coffee. It was excellent; it was stronger coffee-wise relative to what I usually have other places. Let friendly. There was some good looking food items on display including quiche and cakes. Friendly staff.
google avatar

Zoe C.

Yelp
Both the Palm Beach Gardens and Boca Raton locations are great so I was looking forward to trying this location. However, I was very disappointed. I ordered an Iced White Mocha Latte with Almond Milk and was given a plain latte, which had just a bitter coffee taste. For $8, I was pretty disappointed. While the barista was nice, the service is very slow even when there was no line. Additionally, there is very minimal parking nearby.
google avatar

Chana S.

Yelp
Really pretty latte art. Coffee overall was good but quite crowded inside, not sure if it was because I came on a Friday but there wasn't much room to sit. Overall was a good experience and tasty coffee
google avatar

Julio H.

Yelp
The coffee here is really good here. The service is a bit slow and too hipster sometimes. The crowd is a bit strange but everyone is civil. It's better to sit outside and enjoy your coffee there.
google avatar

Leslie S.

Yelp
Pros: great spot to get a quick pick me up! Chill vibe, good selections. Cons: limited tables, it's small, so may be hard to find a spot if you are looking to chill.
google avatar

Hannah G.

Yelp
10/10! Subculture roasts all of their own beans in house and they have so many options to pick from. The barista was so nice and showcased some of their favorites to pick from. I ended up getting something to fit the season and got a latte with brown sugar and spiced syrup. It was delicious. The vibe is really hipster, very unique. It's a smaller place but lots of seating in and outside. I would definitely recommend if you're looking for a hipster spot in west palm. The icing on the cake was the fact that they had a special event for Christmas Eve setup outside full of free food, a Santa meet and greet, the fire station, a band, face painting, etc.
google avatar

Iris. G.

Yelp
Stopped by for Coffee and a muffin after Yoga. The decor is interesting. Coffee was probably the worst I ever had. The staff recommended the chocolate chip banana muffin, which was good, full of brown sugar, spent $10.00. Indoor & out door sort
google avatar

Renee S.

Yelp
Pretty average place and not the cleanest. The bathrooms sort of smell like pee. The employees are cool but don't really know what's happening. We came in for game night since we saw they have discounted wine and beer while playing games but they didn't believe they offered that at their location. And you had to ask for the discount on the beer and wine. They would honor it at their digression. (See photo below taken at their location). They also didn't have many games to play and it was so dark inside. The baklava wasn't great as I found it to be hard and overly sweet. The matcha tea was pretty good but it wasn't mixed wonderfully. There was still powder chunks at the bottom after finishing my drink. I can see why this place is popular as it attracts a lot of hipsters and the employees seem passionate about working there. A lot of people were doing work on their computer. Maybe this is a better daytime than evening spot as I came at night and stayed until close (10PM).
google avatar

Dainty L.

Yelp
Great coffee & super quick yummy hot breakfast. Love the vibe and the outdoor dining was beautiful
google avatar

Sonja E.

Yelp
Beyond expectation - latte creamy, nutty and beautifully crafted. Environment chill and homey!
google avatar

Zohabe B.

Yelp
Nice ambience with a decent honey cappucino and a very good canilla iced latte. Service was prompt.

Reed S.

Yelp
Fking terrible, lukewarm weak drip coffee, bad service with convenient power outlets and well painted mural.
google avatar

Ambar C.

Yelp
Great coffee shop. Amazing staff! The place is cozy and chill with lots of room to curl up with a book or bring out your comp for work. The coffee is excellent and there's great options for food. Pastries, cookies, sandwiches, salads. And some Veg and GF items as well. I was greatly satisfied with my latte and looking forward to many more.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
What a cool coffee shop! They have some seating outside, but the inside is much nicer with some cushioned seating and convenient restrooms. There's even a couple of cozy tables by the windows near the entrance. There's some fridges with cold drinks and of course the coffee counter. Staff was welcoming. We ordered a macchiato and cappuccino, however, we had to wait about 10 minutes for them to be prepared. The good news is that they tasted really delicious.
google avatar

Rajiv K.

Yelp
Was a quintessential coffee shop. I wish I had one closer to home. The cappuccino I got was flavorful and of quality. It didn't really even need any added sugar due to its lower acidity and mellow flavor. They had an oat milk option. Lots of people just on their laptop or reading. I'd go back and it's my friends go to coffee shop in wpb.

Sidenei F.

Yelp
Service was NOT friendly. Coffee was not great, tasted fine till I discovered some unknown particles floating in it. Ambiance was actually good!
google avatar

Thuha N.

Yelp
Spent a couple hours between meetings here, loved every second of it. I didn't have coffee this time. I had a matcha latte with honey (thanks for the recommendation!) and a coconut macaroon (not to sweet, slightly crunchy outside, moist inside). Can't wait to come back
google avatar

Shannon M.

Yelp
Worst coffee I've ever had. Didn't even know coffee could taste that way. Literal bean water. &No toilet paper in the bathroom
google avatar

Alexander G.

Yelp
I love the matcha and the friendly faces! The service is great, and I love the environment of the place. Has a nice feel, and has delicious coffee. Try it!!!
google avatar

Maor R.

Yelp
My espresso was sour and either under roasted or under extracted. Either way, barely drinkable. Very cute place though. Also, staff was not friendly which I consider to be critical in a coffee shop experience. Hopefully just an off day. I'll revise in the future if I try them out again.
google avatar

Haylee H.

Yelp
Their French press coffee is literally the best coffee I've ever had. I split a piece of Queche with my partner and it was very very good too. Staff is super welcoming and friendly. The whole aesthetic of the place is super cool too.
google avatar

m z.

Yelp
Hands down the best cappuccino and açaí bowl I've ever had. The bowl had the best homemade granola and the freshest fruit. If you're in the area you have to try it!
google avatar

Alex R.

Yelp
Employees were very friendly and helpful, got a decaf americano and it was so good, tasted just as good as a regular americano!
google avatar

Nick G.

Yelp
Excellent coffee , barista really knows his business and likes what he does - that's very clear . Funky atmosphere . Very welcoming service
google avatar

Sherry T.

Yelp
The service was very friendly and welcoming. My go to order is usually an iced cold brew but I did not like the way it was brewed at all. It tasted like sour juice and nothing like a coffee. I would not recommend getting their brewed coffees if you're a coffee drinker.
google avatar

Adriana G.

Yelp
This coffee shop is conveniently located in downtown West Palm. I think the location is brilliant because you can go shopping after wards or head to the beach. I don't typically drink coffee so I ordered hot chocolate and it was pretty good. The mural outside is great to take pictures and they have both indoor and outdoor seating. The staff is always nice and attentive. Definitely would recommend this spot. It's pretty chill and you can also get some work done because it's not too noisy
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
Cute little hipster shop located on Clematis in downtown West Palm. The coffee was pretty good and their other options they offer on the menu was not bad. Parking is not free so you would have to pay for street parking or in a parking garage.

Sasha D.

Yelp
Pretty good coffee! A great vibe for sure. The area around is very cute! I recommend!

Hakeem S.

Yelp
Food and service are always at the top for me. It has a cool aesthetic with decor but it can seems a bit dark with decor but the vibes are welcoming. They offer outside seating as well. This is among my favorite spots in WPB. I especially love the sandwiches, pastries, and beverages. I found Joe's Peach Tea here. I am a fan of the product. Although I discovered the same item is much cheaper n NYC and NJ, when go back to visit. I will purchase it, when go back here. I am long time customer and I love the brand. It has a sense of community with it. It help give 500 block of Clematis a nice boost to energy along with other establishments.
google avatar

Joseph R.

Yelp
I like the coffee because I have had it at other restaurants that serve it but when I went to Subculture Coffee location for the first time at the Clematis location I asked for a large coffee and was told we have one size. I was ok with that but when I paid almost 4 dollars for a cup 3/4 full and was less than 8 ounces that was crazy to me. Lastly they had no lids at the time. I very rarely post a negative review but 3/4 cup, no lid for almost 4 dollars deserves a negative review.
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Visiting south Florida I wanted to hit the best coffee shops I could find. This is a really hip, shop in a nice area. There is plenty of area to sit both inside and out. They offer up a small amount of eats but the coffee is where it's at. Despite being early in the morning, the barista put a lot of care into my drink and created a fantastic latte. The temperature was great and the milk was expertly textured. The flavor was smooth and delicious! The latte art was great! Overall, a must visit if you want high quality espresso near West Palm. Highest recommendation!

Vanessa P.

Yelp
Service was amazing!! Workers are extremely nice. And the food is so good here. 10/10 recommend. Also it's very calming here, I read here with my friend and it was very nice.

Yelp
Great coffee- delicious açaí bowl. Cappuccinos are perfect!! Wish I could go more often but parking is expensive.

Yelp
I have been to Subculture Coffee in Delray and loved it so I really wanted to try their Clematis Street location. It is located right next to a parking garage making it a breeze to park in a place where parking is at a premium. Subculture Coffee was established on March 3, 2014 by Rodney Mayo and his partner Sean Scott. They are the only microroasting facility in the area except for Oceana Coffee in Tequesta and Panther Coffee in Miami. Like the craft wine and beer places that came before, they want to be known for their craft coffee. Subculture Coffee roasts their coffee every day in small batches in order to maintain a higher quality, smoother finish, and full flavor. You can order seasonal flavors and different coffee from around the world. Beans are sourced from Central and South America, Africa and the South Pacific. The coffee is roasted on a Diedrich IR-12 which offers flexibility in roast size. They have a kitchen that serves food but it closes at 4 and I missed it. They also have a daily happy hour every day from 5 to 7 and beer and wine is half off. I ordered a cappuccino for $4.95 and I enjoyed watching the care that was taken in crafting it. Once you get your order you can enjoy it in your choice of two rooms, one with a book nook or in the outdoor courtyard where on the night I visited a DJ was spinning tracks. My coffee foam was thick and frothy and it tasted delicious. It may be one of the best cappuccino's I have ever had. Although Subculture caters to the coffee experts they are completely accessible to anyone who doesn't know the correct roast temperature for a specific bean and just wants to enjoy a cup a great cup of coffee the way God intended it to be. Warning, once you try the brew at Subculture, you will never want coffee from those ubiquitous chain coffee places again.
google avatar

Vincent C.

Yelp
The staff was very unprofessional and laid back, they forgot 1 out of 2 things from my order, I had to remind them meanwhile they were all talking and doing nothing. They also gave me the wrong empanada, I ordered the vegan empanada to go and once I took a bite I realized it was a chicken empanada. I am allergic to chicken and I am very upset I had to throw it away. Total waste of time and money I will never come back.
google avatar

Nathan D.

Yelp
Was doing a project in the area over the weekend so between both days I stopped in for a cold brew, some empanadas and the egg white and biscuit. Staff was upbeat and helpful. The space is very comfortable and welcoming with plenty of seatng. The cold brew tasted hreat and so was the food i got on both days. Next visit I want to try their toast meals. Definitely will be back!
