How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Comporta, Portugal

"Find yourself amid 42 private acres of pristine land at Sublime Comporta. The hotel is a design lover’s paradise, with an ultra-clean aesthetic that will have you snapping pic after pic for Instagram. Choose between its rooms and suites, or go for a Bio-pool Suite, which overlooks one of the largest chemical-free freshwater pools in Europe. Don’t leave before dining in one of its restaurants, including the organic, farm-fresh plates at Food Circle and its hyper-local Tasca da Comporta, a seasonal outdoor restaurant serving Portuguese classics." - Travel + Leisure Editors

The Best Hotels and Resorts in Europe and the UK: The Gold List 2024

"Set among the pine forests and sand dunes of Comporta is Sublime, a boutique hotel with idyllic surroundings, first-class hospitality, and an away-from-it-all atmosphere. Understandably, people associate Comporta with the late-sunset beauty of summer, but Sublime is welcoming all year round. In fact, the heated floors, freestanding bathtubs, and private terraces feel utterly blissful during the colder months, should you wish to visit off-season. There are three restaurants: Sem Porta is the main affair and serves Algarve pink prawns, lobster rice, and Iberian pork; Tasca da Comporta is a little more casual, focusing on small plates; and Food Circle is a chef’s kitchen in the middle of the property’s organic garden. There’s also a beach club, spa, and on-site herb and vegetable garden. From sunrise on your private deck to chef’s table dinners, everything has been delicately thought out—and you’ll remember the utter relaxation you felt here long after you return home. The hotel grounds are really beautiful and peaceful. The pool area and common spaces look great and the food is very good. The staff is also amazing. Everyone we met was kind, helpful, and friendly. But the rooms were a big disappointment. Ours was small and plain, with almost no decoration. It looked more like a small New York apartment or a basic Marriott room than what you’d expect from a hotel this expensive. The linens felt like the kind you might buy on Amazon, not soft or special. For how much the hotel costs, the rooms should be much nicer. Also, the beach is a 10-minute shuttle ride away, which we knew, but the shuttle only leaves once an hour. This is a beach town and most people go to the beach during the day, so it doesn’t make sense. If you miss the shuttle, you have to wait another hour, which is not what you’d expect at a hotel like this. The setting is beautiful and the staff is wonderful, but the rooms and beach access really took away from the overall experience.

Nestled in the woods behind a gate which you can easily drive right past if you sneeze, this hotel is a collection of single story villas and low rise buildings which blend perfectly into their surroundings. The 45 rooms/villas are all surrounded by the natural forest. Many of the villas have their own swimming pools. The main swimming pool for the hotel is set a few steps from the main lobby in a clearing adjacent to a large fire pit and snack bar. An outdoor hot tub is also close by. The setting is quite nice and my only complaint here is that there is a major fly/mosquito issue which gets in the way of one enjoying their time at the pool. The hotel supplies repellent spray to mitigate the problem but this does not really solve the problem. We stayed in room 5 which was a decent size and nicely appointed. There were, however, a few design flaws in my opinion. First, there was no place in the shower for one to place a razor, shaving cream, a wash cloth, or anything else for that matter. While this allowed me to practice applying shaving cream while holding my razor in my teeth, this is a skill that will likely do me no good outside this hotel. Second, the glass door to the shower was too low to the floor for it to open without moving the bathmat - the glass door to the toilet area, however, was an inch or two above the floor and did not have this problem. Lastly, there is little, if any, privacy between the shower, the toilet area, and the rest of the bathroom area. I will acknowledge that these may seem like “first world” problems, however, the prices for this resort are “first world prices” and, in my view, these are easy fixes with some forethought. The hotel has two main restaurants - the modern Sem Porta and the more traditional Portuguese Canalha Comporta. We ate in both and both were very good. The staff is very friendly and eager to please - a particular shoutout to Pedro at the lobby bar and his personal specialty old fashioned infused with chorizo and sporting a piece of charred chorizo on top. While not on the beach, the hotel has a beach club approximately 10 minutes away and provides shuttle service throughout the day. The beach area has a private section for hotel guests only and a Restauarant operated by the hotel. Towels are supplied by the hotel at the beach. There is a snack bar on the beach that delivers to your lounge but I would not recommend it. We tried it once and the food was passable at best. The food in the restaurant operated by the hotel will require you to leave your lounge chair but it’s worth it. If you have a car and want to be completely on your own schedule, parking is approximately 4 Euros per day. The hotel is building an addition across the road which, a staff member told us, is expected to be three times the size of the existing resort. Hopefully that they will fix some of the nuisance items I mentioned above. All in all, a very nice couple of days.

This place is an oasis of calm & serenity in an albeit calm & serene (apart from some construction across the road) part of Portugal. The "resort" has it all, amazing accommodation (we stayed in a villa, if you get a shot and you like to look out over nothing, ask for 34) , impeccable service, lovely bar, quality food, a really amazing beach club etc. High end, top dollar but worth it. |Comporta. My one gripe. It's agricultural around the resort. There are rice fields everywhere. That alas equals mosquitoes. All five of us got bites at various times and covered in citrus repellent. Without mosquitoes its a 6 out of 5. Comporta town is a mix of rustic, cool, high end restaurants and down to earth bars. Some good shopping for those who don't own enough Hamptons like gear (there are plenty of cool Portugese brands and shops). I wish I would remember the name of the fish restaurant in the middle of town where we had Sardines. So good. One other thing, its not "remote" but its a solid 1.5 hours to Lisbon and its all motorway to get there, short of a couple of rest stops there isn't much on the way in. So, amazing resort, relatively unspoiled but that will change, more resorts, more people are coming. Its a place to relax (spa, pool, eat, beach !) and chill (well it was for us!).

Absolutely great hotel which we loved and would return to. There are some things worth knowing:||- The hotel seems to attract an active clientele. The gym is great, but packed at 8/9am and very quiet for the rest of the day. It would be good if they could unlock all parts of the gym early so thet it can all be used at the busy hours. 75% of the space (everything except the weight/cardio room) is locked until the host arrives.|- There are more possibilities for exercising outside the hotel (biking/running) but the hotel seems to actively discourage it (bad idea to run outside the hotel). Is this a liability issue? Admittedly the options probably require a short drive (running in the rice fields is stunning) but the hotel staff seem averse to it|- The food is excellent at all the hotel’s restaurants. Much higher standard than I expected, and as good as any comparable hotel I can think of. It is worse making bookings ahead of time if you are coming in season. We arrived with nothing, and got what we wanted after a bit of work. Jacare, Mesa and Cavalarica in Comporta were also excellent. Everywhere was very fairly prices compared to a comparable level in the Med.|- Beach club is gorgeous. Easy to get front row beds in July IF you are there by 11am. The restaurant is great.|- Car charging is easy (by relatively pricey). We got given an EV as an upgrade at the airport, and once I had mastered the MIIO app, it worked ok. You really should have a car here. Distances aren’t far but parking is easy and flexibility was appreciated.|
Stand out things:||- The staff. Just wonderful. Natural, friendly, professional…. Great|- Food Circle. Not my sort of thing in principle (nearly 4 hours with 12 strangers with multiple small course). BUT the food was exquisite and worth every Euro.|- Wine tasting. The Sommelier is a lovely guy and we sir enjoyed learning and tasting. A real pleasure and an excellent intro to a less-known market (and why it is less known is well explained… nothing to do with the quality!).|- We had Padel lessons. What a blast, and such an engaging pro.
||If there were one recommendation for improvement it would be to build a lap pool. There is almost no opportunity to swim here, which is sad when you have the ocean (too rough) and many many individual pools plus a couple shared pools. None have the dimensions for laps.

Sublime Comporta lives up to its name! This was my second visit, and somehow it was even more magical than the first. From the moment you arrive, you’re welcomed not just as a guest, but as part of a serene, soulful retreat that feels like home. The vibe here is very unique: relaxed, elegant, and effortlessly warm. The surroundings are breathtaking, and the energy is unlike any other place. What makes the experience unforgettable, though, is the incredible team. Nicole, in particular, went above and beyond to make every moment special and memorable. Every ask we had, was met with hospitality. The team’s attention to detail and desire to make our stay perfect was evident in every interaction. Whether it was arranging a last-minute activity or simply remembering our preferences, nothing ever felt like too much trouble. Sublime Comporta isn’t just a hotel, it’s a feeling, a memory, a place I carry with me long after I leave. I already can’t wait to return to this peaceful haven. Thank you for making it feel like home.

We arrived at Sublime Comporta after dark but felt immediately at home when we walked in. The resort is cozy, warm, and inviting! We were so late for checking in that instead of checking out our room first, we beelined over to the restaurant, as we were pretty hungry and tired. A lovely hostess greeted us, and the waitstaff was also extremely friendly. They had great suggestions for food for us to try and wine to match our choices. We then had the real treat of getting to our bio pool suite room. It was beautiful! While some people probably would not enjoy the sound of frogs all night, we loved it! It was super relaxing, and before long, we were out cold and had the dreamiest sleep. We also had the opportunity to check out their beach (about 10 minutes away from the hotel). They have a complimentary bus that will take you there and back. We could not eat at the beach club (they were full, and we didn't realize we needed reservations so far in advance), so we had some wine at the bar while gazing at the beach and water. Although we were only there for two days, it was a relaxing experience and a great stopover between our vacation destinations.

This secret hideaway is really sublime! The mediterranean scent of pine trees and the overall feeling of natural luxury give you an instant feeling of holiday and relaxation. The team of people are really really friendly and helpful. Great restaurant, truly the best breakfast all fresh made. Nice open spaces with all wood and nature elements. The villa is cosy and very relaxing. Great facilities. An absolute recommendation!

First thing’s first - the staff are wonderful. Thank you all for being so friendly and helpful. ||However, I unfortunately do have to say that Sublime Comporta is not a quiet retreat, despite being sold as such. This is what I wish I knew before checking in:||The resort is located on a main road, and in most villas you will hear every car that passes. We had a one bedroom villa with pool (Villa 18 - which was by no means the closest to the road) - and all you can hear is traffic. This meant that the outside space was unusable (to us, who were looking for a quiet break).||We had specifically emailed in advance to ask about noise (and even mentioned road noise) - and we were told that the resort is quiet and tranquil, and in the middle of nature. This is just not true. ||We were offered a change of room, but the alternatives were:||- Sharing a villa with other guests, including sharing the pool, and losing the living room, kitchen and bathtub; or |- Paying more for a three bedroom villa which was huge and pretty unsuitable for just two people.||The other thing to note is that a lot of the accommodation is indeed shared - so your villa maybe actually be split between families. This may mean that you are staying in one bedroom, with other people staying in the other bedrooms and you share a corridor / pool. Very odd! I haven’t seen anything like this elsewhere. On the final night, guests were moved into the second bedroom of our villa and their dog barked loudly and constantly - such that it could be heard three rooms away (with all doors closed - the doors/walls are all extremely thin).||Pricing - our one bedroom shared ‘villa’ was nearly EUR1,000 per night, off season (we stayed before Easter, in April). Food is also expensive, and varying in quality - see other reviews. So value for money is low (you could stay at a Four Seasons for similar prices - we usually do and really wished we had done). ||On checkout none of the above was reflected in our bill. We were offered a consolation box of strawberries. ||We then had to ask for a discount (on principle you should do have to pay for such a disappointing stay) which was just so embarrassing. No-one with sufficient authority was available to authorise more than 50% off a single night (of a 5 night stay) so as our taxi was waiting we paid this and left. A terrible way to end the stay. We were then later given a further 50% off one night - meaning that we were given 1 night free stay out of 5, that we literally had to demand. So embarrassing.||Positives - ||The staff were lovely, and I felt a bit sorry for them. Our noise complaint was clearly very common and there wasn’t really anything they could do.||The place looks nice in pictures.||It is very family friendly - loads of children everywhere and organised activities (eg a treasure hunt).||All in all, for a tired couple working in law/consulting who just needed a quiet break from London, this was not the place at all, so for us it really was one star. So, so disappointing.
