Google
Great little local shop! Whenever I travel, I try to avoid chains and find local gems. This was a perfect find. We enjoyed sitting outside with our coffees on this beautiful California day. My macchiato was very good. Highly recommend.

Google
Hipster coffee spot with a cute home style vibe. Loved the half open front door. We all got cold brew and they have the proper way to do it as well!

I live around the corner so this is my spot. The staff is always kind and cheerful and it’s always a good vibe with good music playing. The staff know their way around an espresso machine. The pulls are always dialed and the milk art is always crisp and fluffy. I usually get the cold brew though. It’s jet fuel so be careful! They also have a nice selection of pastries as well. We love this place!

Google
Overall this is a great coffee shop with a decent amount of seating and a nice atmosphere. I can totally see myself coming by here to do some work if I lived in Oakland. The shop does seem to be popular, so you may always have a lot of background noise, but nothing a pair of headphones can't solve!

Google
I was there once last year and an extremely nice girl helped me out choosing the beans and then she grinded them for me. Unfortunately yesterday I went back and the man at the cashier was pretty rude and when I made my decision he told me they could not grind the beans for me. I guess I expected a very different treatment because of the previous positive experience... like for example asking me if I still want to buy the beans after telling me they don't grind them. Well, there's a lot of other good coffee out there! Subrosa is not for me.

Google
Cute, cozy neighborhood coffee shop with just the right amount of caffeinated goods to jump start your day, or infuse a boost into it. Has covered back patio and an open front seating. The coffee is well balanced and a treat to drink.

Google
The location of this place is a little strange for an artisan coffeeshop. The place is tiny, and the main seating area is in the ally behind. But damn, their coffee is fantastic. I got an amazing shot from of a Fourbarrel blend from them, and it was just as good as those that I've received from the roaster itself. The pourover drip was very nice, as well. If you're in the area and want some excellent coffee, this is the place to go.

Google
The baristas are asking everyone for a tip. We’re in a pandemic, I get it. My partner ordered drip coffee and replied, “no” when she asked and then she gave him a real nasty look when she realized she wasn’t going to make an extra $1 for literally pushing a button. Tipping is up to the customer and the customer does not deserve nasty looks for saying no. I know he would have tipped if he ordered a special made drink, but it was drip coffee, so no, you don’t need a tip for pre-made coffee.

Yelp
Loved it, great coffee and pastry shop. The people were friendly and quick, we have a few local friends that rave about this place so we had to stop by. Well worth the visit and we'll be back when we make it to Oakland again. Super small store but they have a side window for calling out orders. There are a few nice sidewalk tables and it's close to a couple good restaurants.

Yelp
Brief Summary: - Coffee is not sour - There are no seats inside, but there are outside benches The cafe is along the side of the road, and if I recall there are not much parking. When we got near the cafe, there was a good line out the door, but this was also due to how small the cafe was. There are no seats inside, so if guests wanted to sit down, there are benches at the front. I also noticed there might be more seating along the narrow alleyway right next to the cafe. The cafe themed artwork on the walls were cute to stare at as I drank my coffee. Speaking of coffee, this one was very good. I ordered the one with honey, and what I liked most about this coffee was that the flavors were bold. The roast didn't have a burnt aftertaste either, so it was a clear sip.

Yelp
Love states love their coffee and pastries. Hated this location. I usually go to the location in Berkeley and I've always had great experiences there but I recent moved to Oakland and went to this location. Let me tell you.. customer service clearly not important. I haven't been at this location before and it look's completely different from the Berkeley one SO I definitely was a little lost. Their counter where you order didn't look like a counter where u order. The girl working this morning on 6/8 wasn't welcoming at all. Not much of a "what can I get for you" and like I'm not asking you to smile or anything I've been a barista (for many years) and I'm not asking for an insane customer service voice but when you can tell somebody isn't in the mood YOU CAN TELL. She was more of a "okay is that all" I can't even tell you word for word how she talked to me and my boyfriend because I was just too taken back by the sour face. Anyways... great coffee but hopefully you don't feel as icky coming out of this place as I did.

Yelp
Soon good! 1st of all the croissants are delish, from Starter Bakery fresh and soft. My iced latte is perfect, a bit pricey and unfortunately they only have 1 size.

Joey T.

Yelp
Walked here for coffee one morning. Great location in temescal. We caught a break from the rain and was able to enjoy the seats in front of the shop. It's outdoor seating only. They have a small alley way with tables and chairs. Probably nicer in the spring/summer. Almond croissant was super fluffy and not too sweet. Iced vanilla latte w/ oat milk to keep it original. Barista was super nice and worked efficiently to get the line down.

Genoa D.

Yelp
Mini Cafe, seating outside in alley way. Simple concept, with baked goods, and an espresso machine. For me, a chai latte almond milk-excellent, lightly sweetened, served up nice and hot. For my love, a hot green tea, simple, lovely, satisfying. Service was friendly, efficient and helpful. Love the vibe.

Johnny W.

Yelp
Summary: Excellent lattes made with beans roasted in-house Details: * Espresso is made with medium roast beans, lending to well-balanced latte that's not overly acidic like many places here * Serves Califia Farms oat milk and pastries from Starter Bakery * Among my top 5 for coffee in the Bay now, possibly edging out Telescope, with Sightglass and Linea close behind Accessibility: Small shop that has enough space for a quick in and out to grab coffee, as long as multiple people aren't jamming themselves inside. There's a small parklet out front that's somewhat accessible, as well as seating in the alley beside the shop, which may be too narrow to avoid impeding foot traffic.

Yelp
Excellent coffee quality with good and freindly service. Nice bakery items. Small space but has outside seating. Closes at 2pm.

B P.

Yelp
Cute little coffee spot but staff wasn't very chipper the morning I went in. Definitely doesn't make me want to rush back to visit again. Which sucks because I work just a block away. I Tried the honey latte which was tasty!

Troy S.

Yelp
I was in the neighborhood in need of some coffee and came across States Coffee. Very small shop that's offers pastries and your basic go-to coffees and teas. I tried their cold brew which was not too strong or bitter and it gave me the boost I needed for the day. The service is very friendly! Would recommend for a quick grab and go coffee.

Janine P.

Yelp
Terrible location and worse employees to represent States coffee. Customer service certainly needs to be improved here - women working in the a.m. on Thursday, Sept 14th need to check their attitude. You're just serving coffee, not saving the world. Hey Keith, if you're still the owner, probably a good idea to revisit your employees performance since many have commented on their service.

Kenneth L.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop near the Temescal area. No indoor seating or bathroom, but! there is a nice alleyway next to the restaurant. Plenty of seating in the alley and outdoor benches. Luckily, homeroom (not their to go one) across the street was nice enough for me to use their restroom. Parking is street parking only. Park along the residential streets but be aware of the time limits (~2hours?).

Janessa H.

Yelp
Divine smooth latte!! Can't get any better. Small joint but they are fast. Beautiful patio on the side and lots of little tables. Would definitely be back to try the chai and honey latte. Thank you!!

Tramanh D.

Yelp
This location is a small, mini cafe location. Street parking and primarily outdoor seating. I love States coffee. I have been to their Martinez location and loved that they opened one in Oakland. Came by to pick up some coffee beans and a coffee and it's relatively similar tasting to the one in Martinez. I always grab one of their lattes, have never been disappointed. If you are looking to do some work, make sure to check the weather! Again, the seating is outside, in an alleyway, so it can get pretty chilly.

Zoe K.

Yelp
This is a beautiful coffee shop! Very open and tasteful....though seems to be a trend with really lovely coffee shops placing more emphasis on the ambience than the coffee. They use delicious coffee but I'd say half the time I go there my cup of coffee is brew too weak. At four dollars for a fairly small cup, I think that it could be better.

Angel L.

Yelp
Been seeing this pop up on Yelp and the free drink of choice when you check in too! Bold iced coffee & cashier was super friendly when I told her I had the free drink upon checking in. There are tons of pastries too - seems like the bread & banana bread are quite popular! You pick up the coffee to the left where the wall is. The outside is also spacious with some area for seating. A cute little local coffee shop that has friendly staff and good coffee.

Sirama B.

Yelp
Don't order a vanilla latte. Their homemade vanilla syrup is essentially just simple syrup, the vanilla is an afterthought.

Alex D.

Yelp
It's always nice to encounter super friendly baristas, especially on our first visit! I was tempted to get the organic raisin loaf ($9, a bit pricey but justified by the quality ingredients I'm sure) but we stuck with just coffees today. The golden matcha that my husband got tasted like had ginger in it which I didn't see on the menu (we could have asked but I assumed golden matcha = honey matcha)...he really liked it! I got the cappuccino and it was amazing, comparable to some great ones I had in Australia (known for the coffee culture). The surrounding area looks a tad bit rough and the trashcans nearby were overflowing - not in their control but would be so much nicer if the city would clean it up. Wouldn't deter us from coming back though. Definitely will be back and can't wait to try the dark mocha and vanilla latte.

Victor G.

Yelp
States Coffee & Bread has taken over this coffee space. there's seating outfront whenever it's permitted to sit there. covfefe: medium roast-free with yelp check-in -semi smooth, somewhat bold taste. much better than starx eats: coffee bread (4) -has a taste of sweetness with a carmelized sugar taste, slightly grainy yummy yummy for my tummy whole loafs of organic breads available. all breads sold here made by a bakery operated by States Coffee.

Min C.

Yelp
Okay, going to come clean - slightly biased review since the first coffee was on the house. Even if I wanted a bite, I was there about 30 minutes before closing so all the baked goods were sold out. Guess I'll have to get the "bread" part of the cafe at another time (aka get here early)! The parklet is still here from the previous cafe and considering it is on a big street like 41st, I always felt like this part of the sidewalk is cozy, if you know what I mean. Honey latte is apparently a popular favorite so I asked for this for my complimentary drink. It had a nice microfoam and was subtly sweet. Good, strong (enough) espresso drink. Check check check. Works for me, what else is there more to ask in an espresso drink? Apart from trying out the baked stuff, I will definitely be back next when I am looking for reliable coffee near Kaiser. And when commuting is a thing again, I will likely rely on their other Macarthur BART location for a morning cup of joe.

Cara R.

Yelp
So their coffee is solid. I prefer the plain old latte or mocha. The honey latte is way too sweet for my liking. The bread is also good -- stop around 10am for fresh baguettes! Skip the toast. I used to stop by their Benicia sister place called Farm & Flour any time I was in the area (sometimes even driving out of the way) for their toast! It was that good. The new States Coffee version of toast is disappointing, especially for the price. Was so disappointed by the bread they use now as it doesn't complement the toppings.

Ted R.

Yelp
Great coffee and bread. States roasts and bakes in Benecia. Their first cafe was in Martinez. The 40th Street cafe is a welcome addition to Oakland - already a fixture. Well established at the old Sub Rosa location. Window service only at first, when they only had a parklet with a couple of tables. A larger seating area next to the shop was added with about 10 tables on a side patio/alley. I was a Sub Rosa fan, but it looks like we're going to be fine. Especially with such nice folks working here. Sam, Claire, Jim, et al! Good peeps, good vibes. Coffee and bread on point! Espresso drinks are made with the Heart + Soul blend. The first time I had at the barista said it would have chocolate and cherry notes. True... It's a really superior medium blend. Incredibly rich and flavorful - not too dark and burnt. Love it here. Five stars seems like an undercount.

Christiana S.

Yelp
Delicious iced honey oat milk latte! Was greeted good morning by the baristas. It's fairly small inside, maybe only 2 maybe 3 customers could fit inside to order, otherwise the line has to form outside. This States seems like a nice outdoor coffee shop as the seating is all outside.

Diane H.

Yelp
OMG incredible! Dark mocha- well named because the dark chocolate syrup they use definitely distinguishes it from regular mochas. Don't get if you're expecting a sweet drink! It's perfectly creamy and hot. I always anticipate burning my tongue with coffees but they must use a thermometer when steaming their milk because this was perf! Hazelnut coffee cake: so moist and with chunks of hazelnuts and a crunchy granola/grain topping. Spicy flavor that compliments the dark mocha so well. We went on a Saturday before 11 and they were already sold out of their "must get" banana bread! But they had all the other pastries and a bunch of breads. Loaves are about $8 each and their bags of beans are about $13 each

Morgan Z.

Yelp
I tried out States Coffee after hearing they just opened in our neighborhood. We tried the coffee and cold brew and enjoyed both! There was a small group of people waiting but the orders came out quickly and the staff was really nice! My fiancé and I have some dietary restrictions and they happily answered our questions. We look forward to trying their baked goods in the future - they all look so good!

Mariah B.

Yelp
I love stopping here anytime I'm taking a walk in the neighborhood. Everything is great; the coffee, teas, baked goods, bread, etc. I have been especially fond of their lattes and chocolate chip cookies! The service here is quite lovely as well. Looking forward to popping back in!

Amy Z.

Yelp
Perfect iced vanilla latte in a minimalist storefront! I love the plant decor and the coffee is delicious. The vegan donuts they serve are from Pepple's and taste amazing! I used the yelp check in for a free drink and would definitely come back again.

James Y.

Yelp
Quaint and cute little coffee shop across the street from Homeroom. After our meal at Homeroom, we decided to walk around the neighborhood a bit. This little coffee shop caught my eye and we ordered a Cappuccino and a Vanilla Latte. Both were excellent and made very well. There wasn't any tables or chairs out. There is just this bench out on the sidewalk. So definitely not a place to grab a coffee and pull out your laptop to do some browsing or work. This is more of a grab your coffee and go, or grab your coffee and have a quick chat outside kind of location. Beverages were definitely made well. Would visit again if I'm in the area.

Sallie Ann C.

Yelp
I love the aesthetics and I can come here all the time. I love that they have oatmilk out and I don't have to pay extra for them. You know, that adds up. Also love their bread and pastries. I keep ordering their banana bread and cold brew. My boyfriend ordered their honey latte and that was really good. I went on a Sunday and it was kinda busy, it took me almost 15 minutes to order and get my drink.

Cat N.

Yelp
Consistently delicious and friendly! When the staff have time they sincerely chat with you; they were great with my dog and we talked about other coffee roasters to support in the Bay while I waited for my order. I love the abundance of space in front and on the side to wait at a distance, and the side window solves the problem of the other location where the staff had to always step around people and come in and out of the doorway where the cashier was. I bet the "backyard" will have cute seating post-covid. Their coffee menu and freshly baked goods are the same as the other location. I tried the coffee cake this time, to great satisfaction. It was the same generous size as the banana bread and tasted hearty rather than sickly sweet as some coffee cakes go.

Eggs B.

Yelp
I usually wait weeks to review a place BUT since I'm sitting here enjoying my bomb honey latte, might as well write something. I was greeted by a coffee master/goddess felt welcomed. The honey latte is delicious, I asked if it was on the sweet side because I mostly drink my coffee black. She suggested making it so it's just a hit of the honey syrup just enough for taste. They have an awesome side patio to enjoy your coffee and maybe do a little work. It's a few blocks from home so I will definitely go back.

Austin W.

Yelp
I've passed by States Coffee x Bread a number of times when visiting Arthur Mac's next door, but haven't actually stopped by until yesterday. To start, the staff here is incredibly nice. This place definitely feels like a neighborhood cafe where you want to become a regular. I had my coffee from home with me, so I only got a pastry -- the hazelnut coffeecake. The pastry was delicious: the crumble on top was not too overwhelming in terms of sweetness and the texture of the cake was not too dense; I definitely got carrot cake vibes from this. My wife got a honey lavender latte and I was very impressed by how good it tasted. I've always been a black coffee type of person, because I don't like the taste of artificially flavored lattes, but I wouldn't mind ordering the honey lavender latte again. I'm definitely going to stop by here more often to try out some of their other pastries.

Sarah L.

Yelp
Service was quite slow when I went on a Friday morning right when they opened. I got 4 drinks and had to wait for over 15min. I ordered all my drinks to be extra hot but 3 of the 4 drinks I got have gotten cold by the time I got my final drink. The final drink, which was mine, was really good though. I got a latte and the coffee was smooth and strong.

Nick T.

Yelp
The 40th Avenue location in Oakland has a gritty towny vibe. Excellent location for a shot if you're on the way to Oakland Hills for a bike ride. Worth a trip for the Honey Latte.

Jacque J.

Yelp
Came to States Coffee this past monday and was so happy with my decision to try this location. The staff was super friendly and helpful, everyone was in a good mood and definitely made my day! I had their newest coffee and a cookie! 10/10!!!

Anh T.

Yelp
States 1. Coffee is great 2. Location is perfect and the park-let is a nice place to chill for a bit. 3. The alleyway is a nice touch and I'm sure a million people we use it for a picture back drop 4. The staff and service was kind and very nice I'll try the pastries next time and glad they are in the community. I know there are a lot of coffee spots in general, So pick as many as you can to support

G K.

Yelp
First, I was not a Subrosa fan. No need to go into that, just sharing as a reference point. States... what more could you ask for? Excellent coffee and baked goods, and friendly staff. The bread I would put up against Josey Baker - these bakers are talented and hardworking. Please keep it up! I noticed once they left the unsold bread neatly bagged just outside the door, after closing, for the people of Oakland. I like to see this kind of small gesture in support of our hungry neighbors.

Apple J.

Yelp
Great coffee and pastries. Tiny storefront, Gritty cool location. I'll be back for sure.

Courtney C.

Yelp
I came here one morning before my commute to work and thought it was a good to go spot! I got a honey iced latte and it was pretty tasty. Not too sweet too which can be the problem plenty of times at coffee shops. I wish there was a better presentation of the pastries though. It was just in a small baking dish kind of in a weird spot so it just didn't look appetizing. My boyfriend and I got a morning even though we were hesitant. I would just stay away from the pastries and stick to the toasts and coffee here.

Mary X.

Yelp
Went on their opening day and got the dark mocha with oat milk. Really lovely because it was not sweetened much at all, so you can really taste the rich dark chocolate. If you're someone who wants something sweet though I would recommend the honey latte instead, which I found to be sweeter than I would like, but was good. Thanks for the free drink on opening day!

Sarah D.

Yelp
I am a long time customer of sub Rosa and when ownership changed to states coffee I was intrigued how things would change. Good news the change was seamless and the coffee and customer service is still just as amazing. I especially love the options of locations ( depending on where I walk my dog in the neighborhood) between the MLK location and 40th street location. Our highlight is getting to talk with the manager Sam, he is always so friendly and kind, not to mention makes me a great americano. Loyal customer - sarah and my pug taco

Samuel M.

Yelp
The coffee's pretty solid here. A few days go, I swung by in the afternoon and tried their cold brew; I was also given the option to add my own cream and sugar. Also, their outdoor seating is ideal for any sunny day. However, the employee there (some young White guy wearing a black hat and a gray sweater) had some major douche bag vibes. He couldn't hide his irritation when he was waiting to take my order and had a shitty attitude every time I asked for something.

Henna S.

Yelp
The baked goods and bread are sooo good! And the cookies, doesn't matter which one you try they are all amazing!! Have yet to try the breads, but everything else was delicious

Glenn K.

Yelp
I was a bit skeptical of this place at first because I liked Subrosa so much. But it's just as good or better. Consistently great coffee and pastries. Service is great, too. It's a couple of miles from where I live and I go out of my way to stop by.

Nancy G.

Yelp
So happy to see States Coffee expanding to the Oakland area. I have always enjoyed the spacious location in Martinez. This spot is a lot smaller with limited seating. There is a small parklet in front to sit and wait for your order. We happened to be in the area and stopped by today which was opening day! Staff was very courteous and the drinks were just as delicious as the Martinez location.

Monica T.

Yelp
LOVE THIS PLACE! Quality coffee and everyone there is very friendly.

Angela S.

Yelp
Super delicious honey oat milk latte and the sandwich loaf is so good. Plenty of outdoor seating too

Evan W.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place. Excellent mocha and tasty baked goods, all baked by them. Tiny spot with several tables outside and standing room inside.

Nicole S.

Yelp
The banana bread is my FAVORITE - super moist and dense (most seems so dry and crumbly to me so what a treat!) And the coffee is solid. Staff are friendly and efficient. I can't ask for more from a coffee shop, keep up the great work

Kb B.

Yelp
a small chain from the suburbs, apparently with big investors helping it expand fast in oakland/berkeley. for this price, should do better than so-so service and coffee. service: opened 3 months later than initially announced when they took it over from subrosa. today, was late to open, a stressed start, and had signs mixed up on the breads, making ordering confusing. hard not to miss the experienced baristas when it was subrosa. coffee: cappuccino with non-dairy milk comes out with zero foam (almond tastes better than their oat milk). flavor in all the espresso drinks flat, with $4-5.50 price. the drip coffee is often an espresso roast, leaving you no option but super dark. bread: solid country sourdough, very moist, simple and tasty. at $8-9 a loaf, almost twice as much as la farine, although maybe a touch better.
