14 Hottest Restaurants in Charlotte, February 2025

"New-kid-on-the-block Substrate is a neighborhood enoteca that adds stunning vermouths, amari, and natural wine to Optimist Park. While there’s no food menu, there is a whole shelf dedicated specifically to notorious hot girl foods —  tinned fish and cured meats —  to be perched atop saltines on the house. By day, the inside is lovely, with the sun casting flirty shadows on the oodles of natural wine bottles, but visitors will want to sip their amber and pink-hued drinks outside on the balcony or patio. Because it’s a small house with a front yard (and a parking lot), it really feels like someone’s yard party. By night, it’s moody with generous specials and a backdrop of something funky on aux, vinyl, or even live. The thrifty art on the walls and a sign that pokes a little fun at “natty wine” culture show this place's lighthearted, self-aware personality." - Kayleigh Ruller

Date Night Bars and Restaurants in Charlotte, North Carolina | Eater

"Substrate doesn’t ooze fancy-schmancy romance, but it does emanate all the refreshingly relaxed and unpretentious vibes you need to keep the evening rolling. This wine and vermouth bar is known for the Spaghett, a bottle of beer topped with Aperol and lemon juice. Beyond cocktails, Substrate offers a selection of ruby and orange-hued natural wines to choose from. For a bar snack, order the tinned fish, which comes with free saltines. There’s minimal seating inside, but the outside patio has plenty of tables and you can typically find live music here. Keep an eye out for nightly specials, like Monday’s industry night or Sunday’s $7 spritz." - Kayleigh Ruller

This was a funky little eclectic, cool neighborhood-y drink spot. The bar got busy at times, there were different seating areas but not that many tables inside. The majority of people were seated outside. The drinks were interesting and good. They don’t serve food, so they let you bring in your own outside food. The decor was interesting and cool. Lots of records, a disco ball, some dried flowers, etc.

Inviting blue collar wine & vermouth bar with highly knowledgeable staff. Live music, DJs, or in-house vinyl selections always make for a laid back vibe. Attracts a balanced and diverse crowd with many regulars. Their team has a knack for collaborating with top notch local food trucks & kitchens based on the theme or event, which sell out most nights. Follow their Instagram to see who they are hosting. Highly recommend.

Substrate is amazing. The bartenders give great recommendations and I’ve tried really interesting and delicious wine here. You can tell some love went into creating it — they also have some of the greatest music (live and otherwise).

Was so excited to hear that Substrate opened! I love when new place is open in the neighborhood. I really liked to vibe in there. There’s a few different sections with all different different places to sit. I loved all of the selection of vermouth and wine. I ended up having a white vermouth that was outrageous. They had bottles for sale as well. The bartender was very accommodating and knowledgeable. They also had records for sale. Thought that was a great touch!! The bathrooms need to be renovated, but they make fun of that. They also have a nice outdoor space if you would like to bring your dog. Will absolutely go back again!!

You know a spot is fire if all the service industry peeps are pulling up here on any given night. It’s definitely one of charlottes best wine/vermouth spots and regularly has pop up food events that support the local community. Definitely check it out- Friday nights are my personal favorites followed by Wednesday eves⚡️

Absolutely a great place to check out. We know the owner well and he has done an outstanding job running the place and keeping things going smoothly. It is really nice and fun to taste the different wines. He does have a beer selection as well if you are not into wines. Check it out, you won't regret it.

A little disappointed with the service here. I asked for a rice lager that I usually have and they did not have it. The bartender gave me a pilsner instead without checking if I want it. And he was also like I did you a huge favour this is an expensive pilsner but I’ll charge you for the rice lager. All you need to do is ask if I want it instead of surprising me. Ps. I looked at the menu and it wasn’t even the expensive pilsner. I wasn’t just looking for that. Thank you

Coolest spot in Charlotte! This new wine/ vermouth bar has a cool, relaxing vibe with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. They have interesting, natural wines that I haven't seen anywhere else. I told them what I usually like and they made recommendations - all delicious. They have live music some nights and also a nice record collection where you can play your pick. It's definitely my new favorite hang out!
