Absolutely atrocious ER and inpatient experience -- typical of Hopkins generally -- with the narrow exception of Dr. Carmody, who was phenomenal. The inpatient experience was unsettling. Day shift put on a good show, but the overnight care had every characteristic of being inadequate. For example, my elderly father was required to call for a nurse if he needed to use the restroom. He *clearly* got to the point where urinating in a cup was the only option (photo attached). What a neat thing to find when stopping in the next morning 😕 Another morning, I arrived to find him with his fingers covered in blood. He'd pulled his IV out overnight, and after replacing the IV, they didn't bother to clean his hands, which he then rubbed in his hair. They said the IV was pulled out at roughly 3:00 AM, and I arrived after 9:00. Without trying to impress everyone with my math skills, this means he had blood on him for six hours or so. I won't spend much space here on getting him a shower (because, you know, blood in the hair and general hygiene), but it's sufficient to say that this was a days long process that got kicked from one shift to the next until I all but threatened to scream. Gloria (I believe an RN case manager in the ER) demonstrated that she doesn’t come with even an ounce of integrity. This experience is representative of others we've had in Johns Hopkins hospitals, and does not breed confidence in medicine generally.

We thought we’d be there for hours and hours. Turned out it took about 20 mins to get into a room and another 30 to have the doc come in to diagnose. The staff were all friendly and helpful which made for a nice experience for my kid. Crossing fingers we won’t have to return but if it’s needed we have Suburban as top 5.

Again, for the second time in the last two+ years, my visit to Suburban Hospital was far superior to most hospital experiences. The building is spotless, the staff are most efficient and kind, and the care is without a doubt, the best. Both ER doctors (two visits) were wonderful and knowledgeable. I really knew I was in good hands…thank you again and again! ❤️❤️

I was admitted here during a psychiatric crisis, and what I experienced was not care—it was neglect. Because I was labeled a “psych patient,” my physical health was ignored. I was dehydrated, weak, and barely able to move. My vision was blurry. No nurse came. No hydration IV was offered. I was told to wait until morning for food, despite clear signs of medical distress. I was forced into a wheelchair under threat of restraint and sedation. I asked to walk with dignity, but was denied. I was subjected to a strip search that retraumatized me, even though I’m autistic and have a history of trauma. No one asked for consent. No one offered alternatives. There was no therapist on the ward. No trauma-informed care. No sensory-safe environment. I was left to self-harm because no one gave me tools, support, or even basic emotional regulation strategies. I had to survive on my own. This hospital needs to radically rethink how it treats neurodivergent and suicidal patients. We are not threats. We are people in pain. And we deserve care—not control.

Google
Now THIS hospital is a beacon of excellence. Everyone from the front desk to the parking attendants to the physicians are pleasant and experienced in their respective fields. You’re safe when you come here, which isn’t the case with some other hospitals. I’ve received top-notch care each time (except during one ER visit, RN was a little too jabby with the needle). It was placed it so deep the Physician noticed, but that’s not enough to deter recommending or visiting in the future if needed.

Accepted right before Thanksgiving - registered and triaged very quickly , diagnosed in two hours , surgery one hour later . Great staff across all ranks - polite , professional and very knowledgeable! Very thankful for having hospital like that in our community!

Hi Im Pam Waters of SOEL Advantage Mobile Notary and Apostille Services and I came here to notarize some Power of Attorney documents for my client. The facility is beautiful and the parking lot staff and on the inside Mr. Larry at the front desk and Ms. Mary helped in directing me to my client’s room. Thank you for excellent customer service.

Google
This was the best hospital experience I think we have ever had. Our son had to have major surgery. Everything from the pre-op consultation with the doctor and anesthesiologist to post-op was incredible. The staff was so friendly, everyone from the nurses, cleaning people, techs. everyone couldn't have been nicer. The whole staff throughout the hospital seemed upbeat. One thing that did strike me was the cleanliness of the hospital. I have never seen a cleaner hospital and we have been to many of the hospitals in the metro-DC area. The waiting rooms, the bathrooms, the recovery rooms, the patient rooms, the cafeteria, all were spotless. I've never seen anything so clean. Plus there was a calm atmosphere, nothing chaotic. Even the food in the cafeteria and cafe was very good and reasonably priced. I would highly recommend this hospital to anyone in the DMC.

Yelp
Can't say enough about how caring and engaged the doctors, nursing staff and techs are. We've spent a decent amount of time in this hospital with a sick loved one and appreciate the newer sections with the quiet getaway spaces too. The four stars stop there. The one thing that's really awful about this hospital is the cafeteria. It feels like a failed experiment in efficiency. The food is marginal (with the exception of the bistro). People in hospitals are under stress anyway, and to subject them to a system that requires some manager-type person to walk them through ordering and paying EVERY time is a false economy (not to mention sucking the comfort out of what really needs to be a comforting experience - that's why the place is so empty all the time). The nursing staff complains about the food bitterly. They feel the patients are much better fed and when there is something good, it sells out immediately and they won't make more. These are your primary customers-- listen to them. Make them happy and the family and patient support members like us will be happy too.

Yelp
detox and addiction. I was put on hold by this rude nurse for 20 minutes for her to be of no help, no information, no care for patient experiencing withdrawal and wanting to get help. Do not go here for help with addiction! No bedside

Yelp
*This review was posted last year. It was posted on the wrong address, so am reposting it. It is an important review to show the decline in hospital health care. Unfortunately, when a healthcare facility is transformed into a business, the consumers/ patients are the first to suffer. On June 30th 2009, Suburban Hospital was taken over by John's Hopkins hospital group. The John's Hopkins group built new additions to the hospital and an expensive parking garage, but they did not add enough staff to keep this hospital running efficiently. Unfortunately, I had the bad experience of having to go to the emergency room this past Friday. It took 3 1/2 hours for me to be seen by a physician. Then, an additional 5 hours for them to get me into, what they called a room, but what appeared to me as a large emergency ward. So, for 8 hours I was sitting in a chair, very ill and no one came to help. One of the nurses told me that my name was on the list and that they would get to me, when they got to me, and asking about it, wouldn't help make it any sooner. I mean after waiting 3 1/2 hours waiting to see someone, and you are really sick, the last thing you want to hear is a snarky remark by the emergency room nurse. So, I thought once I got into a room , things would be different. This looked more like a ward for the criminally insane. There were 20-25 patient hospital beds separated by curtains. There was no tv or telephone. There were only 2 nurses working the floor. And, it was chaotic. The 25 or so patients shared one bathroom and no shower area. So, you can tell that it was very frustrating, if you had to use the lavatory. In my three day stay at the hospital, no one even offered me a hospital gown or tooth brush to use. Getting a nurse was really challenging. And, that was because they had so many patients in their care, it was impossible to get to each one in a timely manner. The hospital beds did not even have a call button. A bell was placed on the tray table, like the ones you would see in a diner, for when food is ready. And, of course this small sound in a large area was hard to hear. So, your nurses didn't know when you needed them. The two stars I gave this hospital were for the outstanding doctors who took care of my illness. And, the nurses and nurses aides in the area where I was assigned. They were really nice and professional. This hospital had been known for outstanding care and service to their patients. No more, my family was so upset by their lack of staffing and ability to see and care for patients, that they were ready to leave and take me to another hospital. No one should have to wait 8 1/2 hours in a chair in the emergency room. There were 2 doctors for 40-50 patients in the emergency room. There was one rotating doctor and two nurses on the 5th floor hospital ward that I was assigned. With those kind of numbers, you are looking at a lack of ability to provide adequate healthcare. If you have loved ones, I would seriously recommend you looking for another hospital. This hospital has become a business with a serious lack of quality healthcare.

Yelp
This is an update. Despite a good clinical team, I just got an email back from someone in compliance. That email said to call her at my convenience. I did. I actually called her twice. I got a message that that number was not accepting calls. I then emailed them and asked them since they weren't accepting calls if they could be the contact for my complaint to the office Attorney General of Maryland health education advocacy unit. I subsequently got a form reply that they were away for a week. this is incredible. These people tell me to call them at my convenience and then three hours later they're out of the office for a week. This is why people don't like hospital administrators. They think they're better than everybody else. They are so inconsiderate.

Yelp
Very very bad experience from Mariam Faris (Dr. Mariam E. Faris DO Psychiatry Johns Hopkins Medicine-Suburban Hospital, +1 other) and her team. Never ever go there for any treatments. Very very bad care quality. No one maintaining basic care quality and you should understand suburban is registered as hospital!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yelp
Just had a hip replaced. Top notch service as far as my experience. Great Staff and the real reason for this post Excellent Food. I'm not sure I would take the whole Family here, but those prices are hard to beat and the quality, might be a fun date night... If you're ever a patient there, G-d forbid, and they bring you a menu and ask what you would like, trust me, order something. Service may be slow I hear, but worth the wait. Paid parking garage. Chill vibe with some amazing people. Way wheelchair accessible...

Yelp
Spent 12 hours in ER. Rude charge nurse would not let me see my spouse. Left a dehydrated kidney ESRD patient on a gurney with no fluids for 12 hours in front of your charge station. Thank God Johns Hopkins in Baltimore got my spouse out of there. Filed a formal grievance and was told all was my perception. I could go on and on in the terrible experiences we had. Just don't go to suburban ER. You will be worse off than when you got there. At best. Doc said she didn't need to listen to me, charge nurse Rachel put her hand in my face when I walked up to ask her when she appeared I. eR waiting room why all others could go back and I could not. Had security tell me to sit down. I am 66, 5'2" snd 110 pounds. I simply asked kindly when I could go back there. My spouse was texting me in bad shape and was ignored. Charge nurse "ratchet" put her hand in my face. I said my spouse's hopkins docs were reaching out to them in the ER and to please let me back because I'm am a caregiver for my loved one. With a rare disease. Twelve hours. Got there by ambulance. Kidneys made worse with no fluids. Hickman line was in. almost died before we got to Hopkins by transport. You are horrible. Not done with you all. Just have not had time to finish with my lawyer. Shame on you all! Including Anne in Hospital advocacy who pretended to care. We got there on 3/31/25. I have time to deal with all of you soon. Stay away people. Far away!

Ellis W.

Yelp
Worst hospital I have ever had the please to be at. I came in an ambulance in such pain that they gave me fentanyl in the ambulance. I get to your god-forgotten ER only to get pushed out in to the waiting room. I am from NYC and I thought they were bad - your hospital's behaviour is FLAT OUT CRIMINAL. What a dump, you should just close down. You people can't deal with more than one critical patient. Pathetic. Oh and because I am bleeding internally I will be going to Georgetown or GWU and filing law suits against your criminally negligent shit hole

Yelp
Of course ER is hell, and ICU is a terrible place to be, but the staff are attentive and very nice, the other rooms are great, and some of the meals for patients are excellent. The mashed potatoes are good, and the meatloaf is great, the grilled salmon is even better, and the asparagus has been excellent! Note: I am not the one who has been here 3 weeks.

Steve T.

Yelp
Maybe the doctors are good but the admins in the ER are TERRIBLE. They do not update patients on wait times to get admitted. I understand that it may take some time but we are going on 12 hours and the only updates we get are when we seek out a nurse and they seem annoyed that we are bothering them.

Neil B.

Yelp
Totally disorganized. In the rare instance that the staff knows what your next step is - e.g. whether you will be moved to another room after a procedure - they will probably conceal the information. Or each one you talk to will give a different answer.

Yelp
If I could give zero stars I would. After spending thousands of dollars on required pre op testing and getting a hotel room the night before surgery because they wanted me to check in by 5:30AM. Get checked in taken back they start the IV and OR staff comes in to introduce themselves. An hour passes without hearing anything for them to only come in and say they need to cancel operation because they forgot to order the correct surgical supplies.

Courtney Z.

Yelp
Have had bad experiences the last two times I've been there, once as an inpatient and once in the ER. I am avoiding this hospital now even though it's within walking distance of my home.

Mimi D.

Yelp
ER and ICU horrible. They gave up on my husband while he kept fighting until last breath. To them patients are just numbers. So many incompetent doctors and nurses.

Alyson W.

Yelp
The staff is harried, rude and dismissive. Several of the nurses were very brusque and unkind.

Liz S.

Yelp
GO ANYWHERE but Suburban's ER room. Went in Sunday massive pain and was bleeding instead of pooping, told me I had to stay after giving me morphine, or the GI doctor couldn't see me first thing but it turns out the GI doctor wasn't available Monday or Tuesday, and the nurses, especially Arimtise, were nasty and rude and wouldn't get me a doctor, giving me just miralax and tylenol, as I got worse. Charge nurse said I could eat a regular meal, and just started having spillover diarrhea. Left Monday night after realizing they had NO GI doctor and now have to Sibley's ER and am in pain and still have impacted stool. Suburban lies to patients to keep them in there and then gives no care. Textbook case of "futility of care". I know it's easy to go there if you live nearby but go to Sibley or Georgetown. STAY FAR AWAY

Andrew W.

Yelp
Great attention to detail and quality care! Checkin to ER was fast and efficient. Care thought stay was top notch and treatment plan saved me.

Mary E. C.

Yelp
I was a patient for a few days following a severe fall. I had the best care possible. Nurses responded quickly to my request for help. I worked in a hospital early in my career as a nurse. Everyone there gets a gold star

Yelp
they need more wheelchairs for the emergency room. For people that can't walk. That's why it's an emergency room ? It took one hour to find one. And it was not that busy. I hope they can fix it soon. I love this hospital. But it's hard for the patients to be seeing if it's not a wheelchair available. Thank you.

Yelp
My mother recently made her third visit to a hospital this year, but her first to Suburban Hospital. Suburban is hands down the best option in the area. My mother had a stay that lasted for nearly two weeks and the doctors, nurses, and support staff were all better trained, more professional, and exhibited more care than other local hospitals. I want to give a big thank you to: Goke, Yeab, Sarah, Anni, Sharon, Lisel, and the many others who cared for my mom. Positives: Great care and the new building is amazing with large state-of-the-art rooms for patients. I saw no important mistakes in care or medicine unlike other local hospitals that couldn't even keep track of what they told me. Cons: $12 dollars parking for visitors a day. Obviously if you are from a lower socioeconomic class you should not visit. You cannot even park far away and walk because there is permit parking only everywhere near the hospital. The front desk staff is not well-trained nor does the process for guests make any sense. I understand why you would want to limit guests during this pandemic, but telling me I cannot visit when I am the health power of attorney is dumb. Even with the cons, this is as good as US healthcare gets and I am so very fortunate that my mother was treated here versus another local hospital.

Yelp
My elderly 98 year Mother in law taken in by ambulance to the ER on Thurs.,Dec.,15th, & the Radiologist who did her CT scan stole her diamond necklace that she had and wore; my Mother in law never took off for 72 years; as her mother gave it to her when one of her children was born... There is nobody that keeps records, and there is no accountability at this hospital....Do not send a loved one to this hospital....Very bad all around.... Also, all of the food is inedible and ice-cold when it should be hot; & she was in the hospital for 2 weeks and she lost 10 lbs....Food examples : Ham sandwich; for dinner !!!, dry bread, no mayonnaise, no mustard, no lettuce....Eggs for breakfast would be served ice-cold....Very bad hospital, inattentive staff; completely terrible....Take any of your loved ones to Sibley, Georgetown, GW....or go to Virginia... Very bad....Check all my other reviews; all are mostly 5 stars...I am honest & I call a spade a spade....Bad,bad,bad nightmare of a hospital...

Yelp
My 93 year old mom fell and broke her leg on Christmas evening. She arrived by ambulance to Suburban and was admitted to the Progressive Care Unit in 3 hours. In the Progressive Unit, the nurses have been simply wonderful. Irma, Sandy to name a few have provided exceptional nursing and kindness to my mom. They have responded every time we would call to check on her -with cheerful attitudes. The Doctors in the Orthopedic Dept (Dr. Eric & Dr. Bob) have also called daily with an update as sometimes we are not there when they do rounds and when they could do surgery. The Hospitalist was very good at coordinating her pain meds and other clinical needs. If I could give 6 stars for all the hospital personnel that have shown compassion, professionalism, and communication, I would The 4 stars is for the crazy construction to park while they are doing additions. It's a long walk to the front of the hospital and the valet (which is good) only operates M-F. Weekends are free to park (a great thing!). Also, if you arrive (sick or otherwise) on a holiday, they have a limited staff schedule, so things go a little slow. If you have a choice to choose this hospital, I would definitely go here.

Val D.

Yelp
There for a week, staff was great. The ER and transition area is wild. The hospital is clean and the rooms are well attended by nurses and staff.

Yelp
MAY 2018: Came into the ER for WITHDRAWAL Akathisia that was flaring and I am having antipsychotic withdrawal [from LATUDA]. Hadn't slept in days. My husband and I had gotten into it. I was left alone and had the cops called on me. They tried to help with their usual "have you called your doctor?", "do you need an ambulance because I can call one right now..." uh, you all mistreat people you think are mentally unstable. I TRIED to explain what was going on and they didn't get it. It's NOT mental illness. The agitation, restlessness, panic, terror, shaking, twitching, etc. I couldn't calm down. I had been throwing up and having diarrhea with muscle aches, grinding my teeth during the day, etc. I had recently stopped an antipsychotic last November 2022. My doctor was negligent and didn't taper properly. I was cut 20mg every month. When my Akathisia got WORSE, he told me to STOP the medication. I, after being in all these groups for years, in a moment of desperation, I listened to my doctor. I'm clearly having withdrawal. The intake nurse didn't know what Akathisia was. I tried to explain and she just wrote in her notes that I hurt all over and can't calm down. She looked and acted burnt out. The more I insisted it was AKATHISIA, she just kept repeatedly asking, "so you can't calm down and it hurts all over?" I had to wait hours to be seen by a doctor. This is not ideal for someone suffering from Akathisia. It's not med induced so therefore it cannot be controlled as such. Honestly, I think the treatments are a desperate attempt to cover shit up. Like a doctor CLEARLY screwed up if I have withdrawals lasting over 5 years now. Like the terror and panic can get so bad. I sat in a room that smelled like pee rocking back and forth while moaning trying to comfort myself. I saw Tracey Lynn Pyles. Dr Pyles who saw me diagnosed my gallbladder last year. That saved my life, but unfortunately this matter is more important and even her treatment last January 2022, was rude and when I heard the word surgery, she like brushed it off when I looked upset. That surgery gave me RLS. And I'm STILL getting separate bills for anesthesia. A routine operation took like 6 hours and I had to be cut open. My gallbladder was too inflamed to be sucked out and I had a stone in the bile ducts. I had like 24 staples and was VERY sick after. I enjoyed the food even though. But Tried to tell her this time when I saw it was her and thank her and she like snapped at me. The doctor was really rude and didn't seem to understand the situation. We tried to explain what has caused my Akathisia. I had been wrongfully sent to detox. It was what I thought was just Benzo withdrawal. People complain about Benzo withdrawal being hell so I didn't have the information I have now, which is that in 2018, by August I was ripped off 9 medications abruptly. 4 abrupt stops and 5 were cold turkeyed. My behavior stemming from withdrawals was seen as addiction by several doctors. Dr Pyles told me I had been addicted to Benzos and that's why I got withdrawal when I was traumatized by my doctors ripping me off. I was really offended and tried to correct her ... it's called Benzo Withdrawal. It's not addiction, it's called tolerance, look it up. She then proceeded to ask why I wasn't just put back on the antipsychotic I had just come off last November. She didn't seem to understand. Like we tried so hard to explain. So her treatment for Akathisia? A med for Parkinson's and Benadryl. They said the med would help with the Akathisia. It's for Parkinson's -- Sure I calmed down, but there seems to be no long term treatment for people with Akathisia. Just quick fixes. No cure! Dr Pyles diagnosed me with hyperventilation, Anxiety disorder [its NOT anxiety], bipolar effective disorder [I'm not], and drug induced Akathisia [its not]. I was hyperventilating because my whole body was in shock. I don't have anxiety, it's called Akathisia. And I didn't get Akathisia through taking meds-this happened after coming OFF psych meds. They gave me handouts for Hyperventilating and bipolar...I have Akathisia. Seriously, educate your ER staff about disorders from coming OFF medication INAPPROPRIATELY. They're clueless and their first response was to give me a Benzo. Really was unhappy with the treatment and ignorance of the staff. There is clearly no place to go for people who have been damaged by psych meds. Your ER seriously needs to be educated on Akathisia and the dangers of coming off psych meds. So disappointed and traumatized from the trip to this ER. Do better! They don't take you seriously even if you are hyperventilating and in the fetal position. You almost have to be "too educated" to go to the ER these days. "I survived the ER for AKATHISIA". It's a BIG FUCKING DEAL!! https://tooshallpass13.wordpress.com/2023/11/03/suburban-hospital-tracey-lynn-pyles/

Yelp
I was taken there by ambulance one week ago today after a fall with pain in my right leg all the way from my right S.I. joint to below the knee. They X-rayed the hip. I asked the X-ray technician if he was also X-raying the knee and he said: "yes." I believed him because the plate was under my hip and went all the way down to below the knee. They told me there was nothing broken, that I only had a strained hip and I could walk out of there. They kept pulling my hands away from tables I tried to grab to keep from falling and finally the nurse caught my fall and gave me a walker. I was not able to get into my apartment building by myself and a landscaper heard my screams of pain and helped me inside. I could not roll over in bed and screamed in agony while trying for 30 minutes but no one heard me and I was finally able to get up despite my pain and use the bathroom, My entire leg is black and blue and swollen. My ankle also hurts and is very swollen. None of my doctors will do anything for me because they are seeing patients now that they are finally back from the Thanksgiving holiday. No one would do anything before the holiday because they got the report that there was nothing wrong except a strained hip. I believe that I have a torn miniscus and several torn ligaments, as the pain is much worse than the pain of the torn miniscus I had a few years ago. I just called the Suburban Hospital Emergency Room again to see if they would x-ray the knee if I went back again and the lady got angry with me on the phone saying she couldn't give me medical advice on the phone. I am not going back there unless they are going to help me, since they did nothing to help me the first time.

Alyssa S.

Yelp
The ER is horrible. Wait time is insane. The staff would rather hang out with each other than actually help people. They do not take the time to explain to people what is going on. Just try to get you out.

Lynn D.

Yelp
"Dr." Ghoul Gaffaris and Nurse Angelo's mean and obviously disparate treatment of myself was the impetus for contacting Suburbans Patient Experience svcs. I was attempting to hold staff to the bare minimum of the standard of care; What I received in return was retaliation. A purposely yanked butterfly cath, inexplicably abbreviated exams, unread X-rays, unread labs, rushed assessments, neglected tests and lack of proper medication dispensing. Adding insult to injury - they routinely call the police on sick patients they simply don't want to see anymore. It's easy to cut corners when you label patients bums; You can then deflect, and blame the patient for their own, sub-standard care; no matter how wrong that is... Shame on you, staff. In the future - leave your biases, prejudices, personal feelings and stereotypes at home, where they belong. Don't bring them to work and pollute patient care.

Sylviane L.

Yelp
This has to be the worst hospital in the DC area! When I was admitted after 14 hours in the ER aisle, I was threatened by the hospital "nurse leader"! Then, I mailed the required form asking for my blood tests results, but Suburban Bethesda NEVER provided the required records. Now, I have to file a complaint at the state level. Will never go to that hospital again.

BJ L.

Yelp
Not good! I arrived from MedStar Urgent Care in Bethesda who sent me without examination immediately to the Suburban ER for a brain scan. I fell on cement pavement with a head injury, concussion, broken nose, damaged ribs and knee. I waited several hours for Brain CT so if I had a brain blood, I probably would not have made it out of the ER! Additionally, I was so damaged, and alone at home for the holiday weekend, I am shocked that I was sent home. I was still mildly dizzy plus my ribs had begun to ache badly plus I was placed into an inflexible, rigid knee stabilizer on my accelerator leg and I was driving. I had to traverse to the garage as well as through to the very furthest point on B, to get to my car and then I couldn't manipulate my leg into it. In retrospect, I do not think I should have been sent home alone but rather held for observation. Healthcare is miserable. I was not in any condition to be released. Staff nice but horribly understaffed.

Yelp
Suffered from an adverse allergic reaction to yet another traditional medicine I tried, hence why I'm PRO-HOMEOPATHIC! I woke up at 7A & couldn't see. Waited a few minutes before using Siri to call my ManBaby who said he'd call 911 for me. 30 minutes later & ride (not an ambulance type of gal) from my dear neighbor Mrs. Lilly, I was at the Valet Area of the Emergency Department. Thanks to her loud yet in a good way announcement that I couldn't see, a Nurse - Christy/Christine who was present, introduced herself, grabbed a wheelchair, helped me out of the car & escorted me to Registration. From there, to the vitals intake, transporting to my room & the interaction with the various nurses, I was off to a good start. & be it as it may that I was 'witnessing' a black out, my head hurt like nobody's business (migraine suffers I absolutely feel you 100%) & my eyeballs were on fire, the entire team who cared for me can have all the red stars & more. If that wasn't enough of positive patient care thus far, my ED Physician Dr. Leonard aka Dr. McBlurry with his distinguished silhouette & warm bedside mannerisms, popped his head in to let me know he was a little behind schedule, he'd be right back & thanked me for my patience. After spending 1/2 of my day being exceptionally well taking care in the midst of enduring injections (I could not prevail against those traditional medicines), tests, exams, the pain subdued by great measure & my vision started to come back...hazy & all. Before Dr. Leonard transferred me to see an Eye Specialist (He gets his own review) Dr. Leonard bid me a hopeful expedient & successful recovery...as I write my vision is almost crystal clear. My entire visit & follow up instructions was charted with a copy given to me to provide to my PCP. THANK YOU Team Dr. Leonard & Suburban Emergency Department, as I pray I don't have a need to return...yet, I unequivocally with an attitude of gratitude appreciate the outstanding patient care service extended to me.

Yelp
This ER is horrible. i took my boyfriend in because he had been vomiting nonstop, had a temperature of 104 and had severe abdominal pain. i previously took him to patient first and they said he had a kidney injury and to take him to the hospital if he vomits again or spikes another fever, so i did. we arrived and they took his blood and did a work up. we waited in the waiting room and while waiting he was in and out of consciousness and his breathy was sporadic. i told the receptionist and she said the tech would be over to check him out. an hour goes by and no one has come to check him out and i was just holding him making sure he was still alive. when we finally went back and got a bed they took him for a cat scan. the doctor came in once and that was it. the night nurse was extremely helpful and kind and took the time to explain to us what was happening and why. however, the day nurse was awful, she came in and just rushed us out, didn't explain anything until i was asking questions yet wasn't certain of the answers she was giving. she ripped out his iv and just left it on the bed and walked away. she literally just left the needle on the bed which is absolutely unacceptable and a biohazard and the needle should've been discarded in the biohazard waste, but instead was left on his blanket. overall was the worst experience and i would recommend going to any other ER if u want proper care.

Yelp
In 2001, I was a patient at Suburban Hospital admitted due to being involved in a pedestrian accident. My experience there could have been completely positive except for three nurses and a female doctor who discounted my feelings, one in particular, a nurse, she was downright disrespectful of the statement she made. The female doctor during my pre-surgery exams likewise made a disrespectful statement when I informed her about a symptom that I was experiencing, to me that was distasteful and unprofessional. I had all of my surgeries, four in total done at Suburban following my pedestrian accident and all the surgeries went well. Thanks!

Yelp
Worst experience. I went there due to urine flow issue after a surgery, I had to wait 4 hours after registration to get the care. They even do not do a primary screening to assess the seriousness before putting to wait and enqueue the patients based on the seriousness ... I even noticed who registered after me got care before me. There was a small room , and an expandable chair , a nurse asked to sit on the chair, and expanded the chair, and I was about to fall, after that she inserted catheter from that chair... just after 2 minutes she got instruction to move me to a room. I had to take lot of effort to switch to another wheel chair to move me to the Emergency Room. They did nothing from there just monitored few minutes and sent me to my house, I don't know still why they moved me to the special room after doing all circus from an expandable chair. I still believe, it is for charging the insurance unnecessarily. But unfortunately my insurance was low insurance and I had to pay higher bill.

Yelp
Where do I begin? I accompanied my adult daughter to the ER this weekend. It is obvious that the ER has not grown with the need. Putting that aside what was a cause for alarm was the lack of cleaning in between patients and lack of confidentiality. I could over hear the conversations with physician and nursing staff with all individuals in the area we were seated. Are we still recovering from a pandemic? It definitely was not evident in the ER. We were seated in a hall way with numerous other patients. Within six feet on both sides there two other patients. One was vomiting frequently and then the tech moved her to another chair and asked me and my daughter to move to where the patient getting sick so they can sit another patient where we were seated. I replied I would be happy to once that area was cleaned. The tech yelled, "it's too late for you, none of these seats have been cleaned!" I am also a healthcare professional who has worked 20 years in critical care. If this was an example of anything learned over the past few years, shame on you. Johns Hopkins hospital system, shame on you!!!!!

Yelp
Went to Suburban hospital for an outpatient procedure and could not have had a better experience. Every staff member I encountered (security, admitting, nurses, support personnel) were so nice and eager to help. What a great feeling to be made as comfortable as possible when you're in a stressful/nervous condition. I pass other hospitals on my drive to Suburban and will keep doing so because of the excellent care received.

Yelp
Another 5 Star experience at Suburban. Another cardiac same day procedure. Love the covered parking. Mr. Freddy at the front desk is awesome. Check in was smooth and timely. Love the layout. Check in. Right down the hall is the dedicated elevator direct to the cardiac waiting room. Nice new waiting room (the new wing is really nice). Nurses were outstanding- preop(female forget name), procedure room (male forget name), and postop (Shannon). Anesthesiologist too. Everything was well explained and boosted confidence. . Redundant safety checks-Squared! Good breakfast after I woke up.

Yelp
My experience visiting Suburban Hospital ER 6/3/24 was the horrible to say the least. I came in with complications due to a reoccurring eye infection/stye + my sinuses had been producing yellow green mucus for the past two days. I was triaged and then sent to the eye room. I waited about 15 min before the ER PA came in along with her shadow. I told her my symptoms, what I've experienced, showed her the rx that was given to me two weeks ago. She then proceeds to prescribe me the EXACT SAME eye ointment I had on hand. She told me there was nothing else she could do and insisted that she should prescribe the same ointment & referral me to an eye specialist. It is 5am and I have not been to sleep due to the pain and discomfort that I've been experiencing and this is how you treat a patient? She leaves out and the nurse comes in with my discharge papers and tells me that i was referred to so & so eye Dr. I asked if the physician accepts my insurance. She says "idk you will have to call and see". So you're telling me that the hospital er refers you to places and doesn't check to see if it's in your network or accepts Medicaid? I also asked to be swabbed for a sinus infection. Something is wrong with me hence the reoccurring of the eye infection and they're throwing me out the door. This was the absolute worst and most non caring non chalant caregiving that I've ever received in all 30+ years of my life. If I could rate this hospital a NEGATIVE 100 I would. Don't bother going here, they give ZERO FCKS!

Yelp
My first emergency room visit in my 25 years of living I left the hospital around 9:30pm I arrived at almost 4pm wasn't many people there when I arrived mainly visitors. Staff was nice from what I experienced. Very cold but That is expected request a warm blanket and your good! Wait time could've been worse but I had patience and I really wanted to be seen so it was worth it now I have a piece of mind. I'm not sure the difference in waiting areas but I was inside the glass area and not the lobby part I guess it all depends on what your being seen for. Overall it was a good first hospital experience for me. I will return.

Yelp
I went to suburban hospital in January 2022 for assistance with alcohol detoxication. It was a voluntary three day admittance. They ended up keeping me over 12 days against my will refused to allow me to use the phone refused to allow me to leave during that time security tackled me shot me up with medication and I was raped. I do not recommend this hospital at all. This has thrown me into a year and a half long mental crisis. If I could give zero stars, it would be a zero. I was forced to take medication's and do things against my will. I do not recommend this hospital at all.

Yelp
My husband left the Suburban ER worse than when he came in. The nurse missed the vein when she stuck in the IV, so his arm swelled up to three times its size. I kept frantically trying to get help from someone--anyone!--in the ER and was ignored for about 40 minutes. Then a rude nurse came in and gave my husband a hard time. Apparently it was HIS fault because he failed to report the swelling. So he left with his entire arm wrapped in a big bandage. It took two days for the swelling to go down. You shouldn't leave ER worse than when you came in. Please go to another ER. This place is beyond awful. Shame on Johns Hopkins.

Yelp
The staff was very helpful and polite despite a slight issue with organization. Although I was there for far longer than I needed to, the front desk person was awesome and very friendly. The X-Ray techs, well, not so much. There were 3 of them assisting me with my X-Ray and seemed a bit clueless on how to operate the machine. One was very rude as I fidgeted after a while, overlooking the fact that as I was there for knee pain, standing for an extended period of time as they kept trying to figure out how to operate the machine was a painful experience. On a good note, the lobby has a place to purchase coffee and smoothies. The mango smoothie was delicious.

Yelp
Horrible place. Staff does not communicate with each other. Discharge planning was a nightmare.

Yelp
I was here for 3 weeks. The staff and nurses were very helpful and the doctor was very good. They tried their best to save what I had and not do skin/muscle grafts. The assistants came in daily to help me with everything I needed in terms of dressings/clothing/bedding changes. Nurses were on schedule with pain meds, lots of times they knew when you wanted it and came before you rang. Everyone was really friendly, by the time I got out, I recognized xray staff, janitors, people from food services, and other facility staff that aren't regulars for treating me. The biggest problem is the computer/scanning system they are integrating. Some pick up quicker than others; older nurses had the most problems. If you want entertainment, the TV doesn't provide many channels. Talk to the staff though, they have many good stories and will keep you sain. Everyone has a story... luckily these people are willing to share. Hey, even if you're just depressed, fake and injury and go entertain yourself, hahah. The 2nd floor can be quite difficult to get internet service on your phones and it is almost impossible to connect to the hospital's wifi. Food was okay here too. Scrambled eggs were fluffy and had butter. Bacon was crispy. The egg sandwich changes daily (with bagels, bread, bacon, ham), so depending on what you like, sometimes it is better than others. Croissants were also fluffy and warm. Chicken noodle soup was very salty but good. Chicken tenders were my go to dinner. I liked to order green peas on the side and add salt. Fruit platters were huge. Canned fruit and fresh fruits could also be ordered and were good. The chicken caesar salad was my main lunch item. I think it was Kenn's ranch, and a large portion. Delicious. The roast beef sandwich wasn't all that great.

Yelp
I wish I could give less. My husband came in for chest pains and was treated terribly. We arrived at 10:40pm and a cardiologist was not called until 2pm the next day!!!!!! The nurse was rude and condescending. He gave my husband medicine without explanation. I had to go to the nurses desk multiple times before we were given any update. Lots of hours sitting waiting. Even when told "he's fine, all test results are normal... the doctor just wants to come talk to you." Hours and HOURS of waiting. I've worked in other hospitals for years and this treatment was horrible.

Yelp
They treat the waiting room like patient rooms. You will be sitting in these uncomfortable chairs for hours! Meds are given in the waiting room, you speak to doctors in the waiting room.

Yelp
Had a colonoscopy here a week ago. Every person with whom I came in contact, from doctors on up, were as friendly, helpful and comforting as possible. This is the first time I had been in the new surgery wing. A beautiful facility with the best facilities for patients' privacy and comfort that I have seen. in the past couple of years, I have gone past at least one other hospital emergency room (the notoriously awful SGAH) to get to Suburban, and will continue to do so unless I am pouring blood from every pore.

Yelp
I was in Suburban Hospital last week for an outpatient surgery, I ended up being an in patient because of some complications. I met some of the best DRs and RNs there. Right from the start the anesthesiologist put my mind at ease took excellent care of me. Melissa in outpatient was great she really looked out for me. Took time to make sure I was comfortable, that I was ok. Tami up stairs on the second floor was great as well she made my stay comfortable and made sure I was taken care of. Probably one of the best hospitals I have ever had to stay at. Thank you Suburban Hospital for such a caring and friendly staff!

Yelp
Ageism is prevalent throughout this hospital. The staff have no interest in caring for the elderly. Primary concern is DNR status. If you want your older relative correctly diagnosed and treated DO NOT go to Suburban Hospital.

Yelp
I would only suggest coming to this hospital if you enjoy being tortured. It felt like what I would imagine a prison to be rather than a medical facility focused on collaborative, patient healthcare. In my experience, they often dismiss symptoms and pain, and leave patients unattended for hours on end. When I was readmitted after a 3 day stay for a severe infection, I spent from 2:30pm to 11pm in the Emergency Dept. before being transferred to a room. All the while they knew I was continuing to suffer from a serious infection (without so much as informing me what it was - turns out it was a rather serious kidney infection that did not respond to the 3 day IV antibiotics given previously, or the oral antibiotics given upon discharge). 6.5 of the hours that I spent in the ED I was left without anything to drink, no food, no fluids as they had run their course and no one came to check on me. When I finally decided to walk to the nurses' desk after waiting very patiently for 5 hours, I was treated as a nuisance and nothing more. I try my best to live by the Golden Rule and treat others how I would like to be treated, primarily with kindness and respect. My demeanor was no different although I was in pain and had lost quite a bit of patience by that time. My questions were met with no answers and thinly veiled contempt. Finally, a nurse arrived with some pain management and I asked if I could possibly have a Ginger Ale to soothe my nauseous and starving stomach. She informed me that she would ask my doctor if I was allowed. Another hour and a half passed before she returned with a drink. It was slightly surreal. Next, the Hospitalist that came to see me told me that, "...if it were up to [her], she wouldn't admit me for treatment..." and "...I don't even admit heart attack patients most of the time..." Um, excuse me? Are you proud of that fact if you are reading this?! Around 11pm I was admitted and taken to my room to receive the treatments that I desperately needed. The traumatic experience from the ED left me sleepless and incredibly uneasy to be in the care of such people. As the days went on, my condition was coded in medical jargon that I couldn't understand (I.e. Pyelonephritis, or in plain English, kidney infection). I was asked out of nowhere by an Infectious Disease doctor about my sexual history and subjected to an invasive vaginal ultrasound. The purpose of which neither I nor my regular gynecologist quite understand. The fact of the matter is, I waited too long to treat a routine UTI due to Covid and being reluctant to take up medical resources for a rather minor ailment. By the time I sought care, the infection had seeded my bladder and kidneys. Luckily, I went in for treatment before the infection entered my blood stream. However, having an Infectious Disease doctor ask a young woman about her sexual history, seemingly out of no where, only added insult to injury. Did they provide a Urologist, the specialist I actually needed, during my 8 day stay? Nope. Explain that one! Because I'm a young woman it must have been some sexual misdeed that caused a UTI?! It truly boggles the mind. Additionally, I was mocked by nurses when they thought that I couldn't hear. My pain management doctor talked down to me and had no interest in what I had to say. I was born with a genetic condition that causes insidious pain throughout my body, many pain doctors don't know or care to learn about it unfortunately. I had no advocate for my care and did the best that I could for myself. All this while being treated as nothing more than a nuisance, rather than an intelligent patient who understands her own body. I was beyond frustrated and upset by my "care" here. Medical professionals need to remember that their patients are human beings and not science experiments. I would highly recommend avoiding Suburban if you can.
