Subway Turns to Beyond Meat for Plant-Based Meatball Marinara Sub | Eater

"The world’s largest fast-food chain by store count is testing a plant-based take on its Meatball Marinara sub — the “Beyond Meatball Marinara,” made with Beyond Meat’s first-ever meatball — which will roll out to 685 U.S. and Canadian restaurants beginning in September for a limited run to gauge demand. The launch comes amid several challenging years marked by accelerated closures (the chain closed more restaurants than it opened in 2016 and shuttered over 1,100 U.S. locations in 2018, reducing its U.S. store count to under 25,000) and ongoing lawsuits from former franchisees alleging aggressive tactics such as rigged inspections. As part of a broader effort to win back customers, the company has ramped up collaborations — recently partnering with Halo Top, King’s Hawaiian and now Beyond Meat — a strategy that may help lure traffic, as evidenced by Burger King’s initial Impossible Whopper test, which boosted foot traffic by 18.5% in April, though it remains uncertain whether these tie-ups will reverse longer-term declines." - Jenny G. Zhang

Google
I ordered from subway app from this store. Seen the ownership change this place food subway size Compared to other Subways, the sandwiches keep getting smaller and thinner. Also, I ask for veggies you can see no veggies.

Google
At first I gave this location 2 stars because I was highly disappointed in the AC not working but I was more concerned for the people who work here. Guess what they fixed it right away! They care! So now I have to give them a 5 star review for maintaining their quality during the hard times. The staff that works here are very supportive and agile with the situation. They made the best out of it and this is my favorite Subway!

Google
Terrible experience Everytime I visit this store by employee who is so rude when asked to change gloves. Haven't seen this happen at other stores

Google
I got two footlongs sandwiches and they were so good. And some chips as well

Employees at this subway are always friendly and the veggies are always fresh.

Best Subway I've ever been too and its all because of Iris and Selvin!! Without them I would not eat at Subway as often! They are super friendly with warm energy and it's always a great treat when I get to see them! Thank youuu so much Iris & Selvin :)

Google
Fantastic service. Owner and regular employees are polite and courteous. The simple fact that a 12 inch Spicy Italian loaded up with vegetables (three portions of ~400c) is under $10 is unreal. One of the few “fast” foods that is palatable and doesn’t contain 95% of your daily sodium and saturated fat. Quality food.

Google
I am a regular Subway customer even when travelling globally because it serves relatively healthy fast food. I used to come to this place frequently due to its proximity to work. the potion and size are usually smaller in comparison, and the hygiene is mediocre in general. What stopped me from coming here was one time l left my unique north face wool vest hanging on the back of the chair. When I went back to look for it, no one seemed to have seen it. A few days later, I saw it on the smelly employee. I obviously would not even bother to get it back, since it was already ruined.

Yelp
@ Nicholson Plaza 3730 N 1st St Ste 125 San Jose, CA 95134 This is the Subway at Nicholson Plaza at Nicholson & North First St in San Jose, CA. It's across the street from the Samsung building, if you need a reference point. I wasn't in the mood for sushi or korean bbq, so I went inside the Subway to grab my usual Tuna foot-long sandwich. It's a medium sized restaurant, with some tables and modern decor. It has NO restroom, which is a negative. The server, aka "Sandwich Artist," was very friendly and eager to take my order. I asked for a soft bread, and she went thru and showed me each one. So I went with foot-long Tuna on Italian Herb and Cheese, untoasted. My add-ons were: lettuce, cheese, onions, tomato, olives, pepper, mayo, vinegar and oil. Price: $10.99, no sales tax. It was a decent sandwich for $10.99. I know Subway has a rep for being skimpy on the meat these days. That's why i ask for tuna. The roll looks more slender, like a baguette. I was careful to ask for light lettuce, so it didn't turn into a salad sandwich. I took my sandwich to go. Overall, nice location, friendly staff, free parking, casual atmosphere, and clean. I would return if I'm in the area.

Yelp
Since the new owner, I think the quality has gone downhill, I can't even see how my sandwich is made with the buffet cover in the way, I want to see how fresh the meats are and how my sandwich is handled during preparation, no sense having a glass cover if this is going to be double covered. Presentation is the key.

Yelp
They were very nice and congratulated my son for his graduation of elementary school and he didn't even tell them that he graduated.

Yelp
.This is the only place that's opened in the evening. I work close by and I"m grateful I had an option for a late dinner available. Nice people who work there and they're not skimpy when it comes to making your sandwich.

Yelp
Out of all the Subways I have eaten at, this one deserves to be recognized. I eat here about 2 times a week for lunch and every single time the staff is super friendly. They're now at the point where they know my "usual" but still ask if I need anything else. Parking can get busy around noon. I recommend coming earlier to grab parking!

Yelp
Friendly staff. Very quick service. Healthy food choice. Easy to park. Observing and enforcing social distancing.

Yelp
My new favorite lunch place. :-) a) They are OPEN. A lot of places have closed in these COVID-19 days, But some of us are still working, and need a place to get food. Yaay! b) Some Subways, when you order a meatball marinara sandwich, you get the meatballs, but not much sauce. This place gives you plenty of sauce. c) I've had food from here maybe 4 times over the last 2 weeks, and it's good, no complaints. And I like the people who work here. They are friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Yelp
The staff is nice. We were able to get a sandwich and pay for it quickly. HOWEVER, The only reason anyone comes to subway is to use the restroom, which they don't have. Don't expect much more from shit ass Bay Area
google avatar

Yelp
Unfortunately these guys do not accept student discounts, veterans or senior discounts :( Staff was a little aloof on top of that. Service wasn't bad nor was it good.

Yelp
Just bought an italian BMT today special with extra muthafuka bug. Cant believe i almost eat the whole thing and the extra protein. Fkin gross

Dylan S.

Yelp
Very poor service. A short old Mexican guy was very stingy with ingredients. Half full scoops of tuna and a limit on veggies. He said a foot long gets 8-10 olives. I immediately walked out. Idk if he's discriminatory or just stingy trying to save money? But he wasted a full foot long because of his attitude. Very poor customer service and I just went to the nearest subway and got a phat tuna sandwich with extra olives and cheese. I left a nice tip because of the difference in service.

Yelp
Standard subway food. Always clean and super friendly staff. Parking is also ok. My go to sandwich place and they still do sub of the day.

Yelp
I left my sandwich at the register because I had to use the bathroom. The idiot clerk gave someone the code while I was still in there and they walked in on me. Terrible

David C.

Yelp
You can't customize your sandwich, i.e. can't add veggies, at this store. The owner told me the sandwich must be made exactly as shown in the photo.

Yelp
I know subway is subway, you either like it or you don't but we love going to this one when we crave it. All the workers are so nice and friendly and the owner/manager Mike always asks if my daughter (who loves veggies) wants a side of anything. I feel like a lot of places around this area just wanna get you in and out and aren't friendly while going about it so their smiles and good service goes a long way in my book..so thanks Mike and the crew! Keep it up!

Yelp
Growing up in So Cal, Subway was everywhere. I think in the Bay Area, the big sandwich place is Togo's. I've come to this particular Subway because it's pretty close to my work. I usually go before 11:30 and there's already quite a few people in there either eating at the tables already or placing an order to go. They make your sandwich pretty fast over here. That's good when time is limited and you need to get back to work. However, the workers act like they're robots. I mean, I don't expect them to make small talk, but at least a hello and a smile. But again, it's not a big deal. Just so long as they make my sandwich good, I'm okay. And how can they mess it up when they're making it in front of you. Want more or less of something, just tell them.

Yelp
Let me preface by saying that I come to this Subway at least 3+ times a week, since I work in the area, and I have tried almost everything on their menu. I like the efficient team work and factory-like production line approach to "create" your sandwich. I particularly like their greeting "How's it going, boss" every time you step up to the counter, until I realized they say that to everyone like a mantra instead of a friendly greeting. Everything was fine until today. I found a coupon in the mail to get one free sub if I purchase another one and a drink of any size (emphasize ANY). So I ordered 2 subs and presented my shiny new coupon. I wanted to get a small drink since they have a soda fountain right next to you (read: All you can drink, no need for big cups). The Mexican lady who greeted me earlier now turned into a different person, and shoved a "medium-sized" cup into my face. I asked, "doesn't the coupon specifically state "Any" drink"?", her response was efficient and rude at the same time "NO!". I thought I must understood the coupon wrong, so I read it again, and yes, it stated "Any" drink. I pointed it out and she refused to engage in further conversations with me. As a fairly regular customer and loyal Subway patron, I felt pretty disappointed by this experience. I expected better service from a globally recognized company and an establishment in the business of serving people. If there is a misunderstanding in terms of offers, I'd be happy to discuss and clear up any confusions. Not acknowledging customers and ignoring their requests is not what I expected from my favorite restaurant.

Yelp
It's a nice Subway in my neighborhood and I often eat here in Breakfast while going to work or after coming back from my gym. My favorite is Turkey subway, I wish they serve everyday $6 turkey sub :) The people who work here are friendly and know me by face. The man who works in morning shift always greets me in Hindi language and I feel bad that i always reply in English, somehow I feel I'm linguistically not so adaptive. The people who works in night time are very friendly too. There used to be a guy who used to work here who i don't see anymore, he was kinda my favorite at this location :( :)

Yelp
Fast service. About time i saw a lady working here and she's awesome. Lots of staff which is good.

Yelp
5---$5---$5 Footlong! 5---$5---$5 Footlong! 5---$5---$5 Footlong! Love the jingle, love the savings! Came here on a February for there Febru"any" footlong promotion. Can I just say that there $5 foot long are so worth it? For the amount of sandwich that you get, it's easy to share and feel full at the end. Where else can you find a lunch meal priced at $5 with all the toppings and dressings at your fingertips. And no extra charge for toasting! I also love the selection of their bread! My favorite is the parmesan and herb bread! Can't get enough of it. 5---$5---$5 Footlong

Yelp
I love the speed at which you get your food prepared here, and it always tastes fresh. The workers here all all nice, Hopefully the manager realizes that customers enjoy clean tables.

Yelp
My wife and I ate a tuna sandwich from here yesterday and then we started to feel a bit sick at the same time last night. This morning we woke up and still felt slightly nauseous. This happened to us once before at this same location. I never give 1 star reviews but I feel like if it happened to us twice then it's my duty to let other people know because I don't want it to happen to them. I'm not the slightest bit mad, so this review doesn't come from an angry incoherent lie riddled approach. Just wanted to warn others. Maybe go to a different Subway. I've never had this problem at any other Subway. I still like Subway but we will more than likely never come here again.
google avatar

Brittany A.

Yelp
Pretty standard subway, nice employees and fast service. Didnt get avocado on account of the fact that the ones in the bin looked grey and old but otherwise no complaints with me

Justin F.

Yelp
ITS THE BEST FOOD EVER, the smell always the best, they always give us extra meat, and are very kind! I was scared to come to this subway because the round table pizza is very bad, but so far this has been the best subway ever!
google avatar

Bros A.

Yelp
I love subway sandwiches, however, this place isn't what I would have in mind when satisfying my sandwich craving. They are also very stingy when it comes for veggies. The owner brought out old veggies; reusing it for the previous day. If you want a proper fresh subway sandwich full of veggies and meats, make sure to go elsewhere; this guy is too stingy!
google avatar

Likaylah R.

Yelp
I ordered my food over the phone and they had it ready for me in 10 min. So by the time I got there I was able to enjoy my break and my lunch! The lady at the register could have been a little less robotic but she made a darn good sandwich!
google avatar

Ava R.

Yelp
My favourite of all Subways! Unlike most other Subways, staff are super friendly here. They are generous with the ingredients in your sandwich. This place gets busy for lunch during the week but they serve the customers fast. A good place for a quick bite with healthy options. This place is open in the evenings.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
As a subway it's well, a subway, but the employees are what makes this place great. The store manager dresses in subway uniform and works day in and day out. It seems as if he knows everyone. He is a genuinely nice person, and you can tell that it rubs off on his other employees. Weekend nights are a different story however. As the store manager can't be found, neither can the regular crew, and customer service dissappears. They claim to close at 9pm, but a few times I have got there in the 8 oclock hour and the doors are open, but they won't make me a sandwich and claim the place is closed.

Yelp
I don't usually leave reviews for fast food chains, but I just have to warn people. I would rate this place ZERO STARS if I could, but I can't - so by default, you get one, sadly. My bf specifically hates coming to this particular Subway because he says they are rude and always cough while making sandwiches, but we often end up here because of location. After tonight's experience, we will make it a point to NEVER COME BACK. They just don't know how to retain customers whatsoever. They are lucky that they are located in a business area so lunch time is an automatic win for them. However during dinner time, it's practically a ghost town and they are going to remain that way at the rate they are treating customers. The hispanic woman there tonight (Friday) is super rude and unprofessional. She definitely needs an attitude adjustment. She also needs to get her ears checked out because while she was making my sandwich, she said "huh" a gazillion times and in the most rudest way possible. So finally when she was ringing us up, she charged us the two footlongs so fast that she overlooked the two bags of chips we also wanted. So we offered to pay cash for the chips. It cost $2.18...easy right? Wrong! So I immediately started to get 18 cents from my wallet AND at the same time, told her "let me get you $5.18" so we can get $3 even in return. My bf handed her $5 first and when I handed her 18 cents almost right after she received the $5, she had the balls to say, "too late!" and proceeded to give us $2.82. WTF?! At first, I thought it was a joke, but she continued to have that b*tch look on her face so I realized that she was serious? First of all, if you can't count and do the math after you already entered the amount (take my 18 cents and give me $3 back), just say it. Don't be a b*tch about it. MESSAGE TO THE OWNER: If you hire more professional employees that offer consistent / basic customer service, you would probably be more busier and have some loyal customers. Thanks to her, we will no longer be returning to your Subway store. We don't mind driving a little further to two other subways nearby. AVOID THIS LOCATION AT ALL COST!
google avatar

Isabel V.

Yelp
I been coming here for about 5 yrs . The owner is a great guy! And the staff is always very friendly and try to make the best looking sandwiches ! 5 stars .... Every time I come into get a sub !
google avatar

Lily A.

Yelp
People that work there are kind of rude. Especially the lady. Also, we had ordered catering and turns out that we didn't receive what we had orders AND PAID FOR. It's not the customer's job to have to tell them what needs to be put in an order. It's so frustrating because now that's a rip off. DONT ORDER AT THIS LOCATION.

Gina F.

Yelp
This Subway is always clean and they have 5 employees at a time. Big time wow in my book. Speeds up the sandwich line, you get it in 3 minutes or less. Yesterday's order: 1 Ham party platter 30.00 1 Turkey Party Platter 30.00 1 Roast Beef Party Platter 30.00 2 veggie foot longs 10.00 2 teriyaki Chicken footlongs 12.00 1 Meatball footlong 5.00 Subtotal117.00 tax 1.57 Grand total 118.57 I planned a Ergonomic Seminar for work and purchased the above and 2 cotsco chips boxes and it was a party. If you work for me, you know im taking care of yo. My team, IT and facilities youre def in my "I gotta take care of " list. Feed employees are happy and productive employees :)

M P.

Yelp
Worst Subway I have been to in my life. I was there at 7pm & he did not have half the stuff. But he definitely had the attitude to make up for it. He also does not have some sandwiches & he just says that subway has discontinued it. And then tries to sell you something more expensive. AVOID this place at all costs. There are better restaurants next to it.

Robert C.

Yelp
I have been to many Subways and never had an issue. Not the case with a visit to this location. I ordered a turkey sandwich, ate it driving home and in less than an hour after eating the sandwich I was very sick. I will never return to this location. To franchise owner, maybe there was an issue with your produce that week.
google avatar

Sandy C.

Yelp
I don't normally review chains because the whole point of them is to be cookie-cutter consistent. But I'm making an exception on this place because 1. they're a LEAN, mean sandwich-making machine and 2. service is outstanding. Lemme break it down: 1. I work in high tech manufacturing and bump into lofty concepts like Lean, JIT, Kaizen all the time...but to see 'em live in action for my sandwich assembly? Wow. Even with the crazy lunch rush, these guys would blow away Henry Ford - without sacrificing ample topping stuffage (I get peeved when my sandwich artists are skimpy on the toppings - yes, I'm watching you). This assembly line is fast, efficient, and maintains high quality. 2. Everyone is friendly and professional without being New York brusque, if you know what I mean. But there's this one guy with a cheeky smile who typically mans the sauce station. And, I don't know how he does it, but he always remembers my sauce order - mustard and extra vinegar - even after not seeing me for months on end. Most of the time, he remembers my ENTIRE order but today I psyched him out cuz I couldn't resist the Hunger Games promotion. There are a lot of lunch options in that plaza, but I can't resist seeing manufacturing excellence in motion along with that personal touch.
google avatar

Kenny P.

Yelp
Crowded as hell with Cisco employees and etc. companies in the area. Probably won't go back here since it's so busy. The people are nice, but you do have to wait around for a while for the food. It was pretty much the same sandwich, not too skimpy and the sandwich tasted light. I hit bad traffic driving here though, a VTA light rail broke down in the intersection. Never again!
google avatar

Majken B.

Yelp
I walked here with my kids, pushing them in a huge double stroller. Often times the stroller makes it very hard to get in line to order, get seated or even just get in the door! That's why I was pleasantly surprised when Mike noticed me as soon as I walked in the door and walked out from behind the counter to take my order. He made it possible that I would not have to stand in line to pay, where I would inconvenience other patrons with my stroller. It was very busy as well. It was just a simple lunch from Subway but it really made my day and my kids loved their sandwich! Mike is the coolest.
google avatar

Yvette M.

Yelp
Though I had wonderful customer service from Iveth and Amber, I want to warn people against using groupons at this location. I received verbal approval from the manager Mike that he would accept my groupon for a sandwich platter; however, the next day when I went to pick up my order, I was told from an employee that she didn't know how to take it. I stupidly left my credit card number, so that the employee wouldn't get in trouble for giving me the platter, and I said I would come back to talk with the manager. It took me three times going back before I could actually talk to Mike. By that time, he had charged me full price for the platter ($35). I paid $21 for the groupon to receive the platter. Mike only gave me back $14 and said I could use the groupon elsewhere. I bought the groupon for an event that has since passed. I have no need for another platter, which I told Mike. He just kept repeating he could not take the groupon. He is the one who told me he would accept it, and then after the fact, said he couldn't. I ended up paying more than regular price for a platter that wasn't even the one I ordered. This problem was NOT my fault, but I was the one inconvenienced and punished by being overcharged and spoken to rudely. I was being treated like I was trying to get away with something....I was just trying to get what I paid for! Now, I need to contact groupon to see if I can get a refund from them, which doesn't feel right since it is not their fault either. Long story short, do NOT trust Mike if he says they can take groupons. (After the fact, some employees even told me that they have had issues with groupons before...so, it is my belief Mike knew he wouldn't accept the groupon.)

Yelp
Come here every once in awhile for breakfast or lunch. Love their customer service. Very friendly and nice. Iveth and Sergio are very welcoming and they are very outgoing and upbeat every time we walk in. The manager is always very welcoming! My favorite subway location to come to before I go to work!
google avatar

Lateef D.

Yelp
lunch was great fast service during lunch prime time hours. Had my a lovely buffalo chicken foot long.
google avatar

Julie M.

Yelp
I went there today to order the march $3 deal which was "Oven baked chicken." As I started eating it, I noticed no flavor to the "chicken" itself at all. Then I wondered if I was even eating chicken. So I looked it up and read the yahoo answers. I just always gave Subway more credit then a fast food burger chain, but not anymore. What I do like here is the veggie patty or veggie delight. Save the meat subs for a real deli! See my review on Los Gatos Meats or Mr. Pickles. I love me a gooood sandwich!

Yelp
I have been visiting this specific location for the last 3 years for lunch and dinner but over the last few months the rude behavior of the people on the evening shift has been really horrible. I m quite appalled and disgusted at the customer service at this Subway location during the evening shift. They are absolutely uninterested and quite curt and rude at addressing customer requests. To go along with it, they are also extremely impolite. I think the name of the person is Jesus. He always works night shift. This is the 6th time I have had a bad experience with him and I think this store will lose more business due to him. He has horrible customer service skills. I do not think I will ever visit this centre again.

Chris B.

Yelp
Used to like it until I encountered an employee who is the cashier at the same time as he is your food maker.... without washing hands. Yeah no thanks. Food went straight to trash and won't be coming back.

Michael O.

Yelp
I was job hunting around this area a couple of days ago and I decided to get a subway sandwich. The young lady (with black glasses) was SUPER friendly. I asked her I wanted something unique and I didn't care what it was. Boy was I in for a surprise. Best sandwich ever. I feel like going back and tipping her again.

Mythili S.

Yelp
This is hands down the best subway I have been to. The people are friendly and serve the most generous proportions. A lot of subways have old, lame, limp food. But since this place sees large crowds during the week, thanks to all the offices around, the food is good. They are also really efficient and quick. Perfect for a workday lunch.

Ron S.

Yelp
This subway has been going downhill for the last two years. Since it is one of the few healthy lunch options around they get more business than is justified. While the owner is nice the lady that works there when he is out sometimes has said things in Spanish that I did not appreciate thinking that I could not understand her. The sandwiches have become smaller and smaller and the sandwich makers are act like they are doing you a favor by providing the product that is on the menu. After way too much time putting up with this I have taken my daily lunch business elsewhere.

Aarohi S.

Yelp
The worst Subway experience i've had. As the lady making sandwich was putting on cheese my sandwich, I asked if I could get a couple more pieces. Her responses was, "It will be extra. This is not like India or other countries. You have to ask and pay for extra things. You don't just get it free." I was caught off guard from the response that for a second, I didn't know how to respond. i remained calm and once I got to the cashier, the cashier begins to say words in Hindi. For a second, I had no clue what he was saying. But, after the comment the lady made about the cheese I couldn't take his attempt to speak in my language as a warm welcome. It seemed like he was making fun of me. I've never experienced racism quite like that. I just wanted a sandwich, I didn't want to be judged and mocked. I don't think I'll be returning to this Subway ever again. I would prefer paying more for a sandwich somewhere else that didn't judge me by my skin color or ethnicity. This is a shame for Subway, because you have lost a disappointed customer.
