Ireland Rules That Subway Bread Has Too Much Sugar to Count as Bread | Eater

"A global sandwich chain was at the center of an Irish Supreme Court ruling that found its sandwich loaves contain far more sugar than Ireland’s VAT rules allow for staple bread. The law specifies that sugar must not exceed 2% of the weight of the flour in the dough to qualify as VAT-exempt bread, but the loaves were measured at about 10%, leading the court to treat them as taxable confectionery rather than staple bread. The decision helps explain the noticeably sweet, cake-like aroma many customers have observed and has provoked both humorous and serious debate about whether sweet, bakery-style rolls should be classified as bread for tax purposes." - Jaya Saxena

Food was pretty good. I stumbled upon it roaming around Seattle. I got the Philly with steak and provolone cheese. It was in a homelessness area but was affordable and when I asked to use the bathroom the girl.working let me because I had to go so bad. Overall it was a good experience the food was fresh and I sat down and ate in peace.

This Subway location provides the worst experience I've ever encountered. It's a disservice to the brand, and corporate intervention is urgently needed. The staff appears utterly disengaged, consistently avoiding orders and claiming to be out of basic ingredients – a claim I find hard to believe for a Subway, especially after three such visits. The two employees exhibit extreme laziness. The male worker frequently hides in the back, forcing his coworker, who struggles with English, to manage alone. Their lack of customer service and poor work ethic are single-handedly driving away business. The issue isn't the neighborhood; it's the incompetent and apathetic staff!

Difficult to park, street parking only. The service here was absolutely terrible. I went inside and was acknowledged but then the lady behind the counter got on her personal phone and talked about whether or not another gal could work and get paid. This went on for at least 15 minutes, she did get the bread out for the 4 sandwiches I wanted to order, but never proceeded any further. I asked twice how long it would be but she was more concerned about the person on the phone. She finally after at least 15 minutes that it was going to be awhile. I told her I was leaving, and she told me to have a nice day. Wow! Having worked in the service industry for years, I found the whole experience awful. I will never/ever go back to this Subway restaurant. In fact, it'll be a miracle if I or anyone I know will return to ANY Subway restaurant. There are other sandwich shops that value my business. This one certainly did not. Do Not Recommend

The worst situation that I had lived ever on a fast food service, I am from Mexico and I was not able to understand clearly what the man on the counter mentioned, being super coarse and treated me as a dumb person, I decided to not got anything from there and leave the place. Really sad for people that come to visit Seattle :( being foreign.

Philip Burbidge

Google
The man behind the counter was working very hard, but holy gods this place is awful. They were out of cookies. Out of pepperoni. Out of Parmesan cheese. Out of 90% of their fountain drinks, including 100% of their non-sugared fountain drinks. Out of many of their bottled drinks, including almond all their non-sugared bottled drinks. And that’s just the things I verified them being out of during my order. And they didn’t tell anyone they were out of these things until the last minute, after they’d already committed to their orders. Worse—and I’m no lawyer but I’m pretty sure this is illegal—the prices on their menu are wrong. (The man behind the counter told me they’re “going to be changed,” but could not say when.) I ordered a footlong #6, which the menu says costs less than $11. It rang up at $14. That’s not even a small difference; the actual price is nearly 40% higher than the quoted price—which would be bad even if they’d been able to actually make my order, without being out of several key ingredients! And again, they don’t tell you this until after you’ve ordered—or, in the case of the fountain drinks, until after you’ve paid! I am actually going to try and report them to Weights and Measures about the pricing inaccuracies.

The the worst Subway ever its 6/1/2025 12:03 pm second, in line and I am discussing the foot long nachos, width, the person in front of me he grabs the sandwich and says, have a nice day. I say you do the same i tell the young lady what I want she sneezes into her gloves im waiting for her to change them then she ask me to reach behind me and grab the doritos that she's getting paid to make for me as a customer, and hand them to her i ask if she can change her gloves she she immediately did it gets an attitude. And does so i'll tell her I want steak. And as She gets ready to grab it. A guy who was standing around comes in and asks if he can use the bathroom, she stops what she's doing, enhance him at the bathroom key. And then comes back to my order. With the same gloves on that, she just handed the man with the bathroom key and proceeds to fill my order. Totally unsanitary I just said nope im cool and walked out i sincerely hope that someone steps in to help because bacteria is written all over the menu!

Yelp
Ambience. B Service. A Food. A Price. A This location is open 24/7! Use the app and find promo codes to get BOGO or reduced rates on sandwiches. My best deal I find is ANY FOOTLONG for $6.99. Today promo codes was 699FL. Jus gotta try periodically and see it it works. Nirmally the app will let you know what promo codes work. This location found downtown and limited street parking if you can find any to do a pickup. Today happen to catch sandwich maker in midst of making order. I could have added any extras to my sandwich if needed. The place is clean And brightly lit. Can get some interesting characters outside and inside at times. I give them credit for having to deal with customers that come through downtown. Tonight I'm. A fan for ordering pickup and delicious giant sandwich request! I'm a FaN!

Yelp
We decided to grab something quick and easy on the way back into the hotel. Subway, like McDonalds, can sometimes be like "old reliable" when away on vacation. Reliable and (moderately and relatively) cheap sustenance. Plus, this location is actually open 24/7. That seems to be getting rarer everywhere. We did not realize how bad the area was until we were already knee deep in the muddy, so it was definitely interesting. lol They actually have a very small, but clean and heated space where you can actually eat their food. After a couple of days in Seattle, this suddenly felt like a luxury, so we decided just to relax there and eat our food. The food is typical Subway. It's not bad at all and you know exactly what to expect, The guys working this past Wednesday were both very friendly and helpful at every turn. I still can't believe 2 footlong subs and 2 large drinks cost me more than $40! lol Location, location, location, I guess. So, basically: - employees nice - food solid - area is pretty terrible It worked in a pinch but do be aware it is not a good area. I think this place was alright for what I could reasonably expect from it. 3 stars.

Sage O.

Yelp
Always make my food correctly, perfect and on time. The workers I've met are super sweet and help anyway they can, love this location!

Yelp
The girl working had extreme attitude and couldn't figure out how to cut the bread correctly. I asked for a 12 inch and TWO TIMES she pulled out a 6 inch. Proceeded to put 4 slices of turkey on the entire sandwich and about 4 olives... that cost $15. I understand the location is undesirable- but you should at least have some common decency to your job and customer service.

Yelp
Less than one star. We visited Seattle from Florida travelling all over the country by Amtrak train. The morning we were leaving Seattle we took an Uber to this Subway sandwich shop about 8am on 12/11/24 heading for the Amtrak station to take some subs with us on the train, we ordered 2 bmt's and a titan, the bmt's were done first, on my Titan I only wanted yellow mustard, spinach, tomatoes, and then finished with plenty of black olives out of his large bowl of black olives, he put on a few black olives and I asked for some more black olives, he put a few more, I asked again for some more, he actually told me I had enough, I didn't say anything, I was just so surprised, I just let it go. I wasn't paying attention when my son paid for the subs on his credit card, but I looked later after we were on the train, and he charged us $15.00 each for the subs, these are normally $10.89 each. My son also put a tip by mistake. So the total for 3 subs was $55.74, outrageous. I have never had an issue like this at any other subway in the country and we travelled the country by Amtrak over 2 weeks at that time. In hindsight, we should have left them all on the counter and just left him with subs he already made, there is no customer service anymore, I didn't even get all of the ingredients, so black olives should be substituted for the others. We stopped at the Amtrak station in Chicago in the train station and they had no problem giving me a good amount of black olives. Do not go to this subway sandwich shop, if you do check the prices.

Yelp
These morons have no idea how to make a sandwich without the generic subway manual. Not only that but they have zero customer interaction skills. Whoever is the idiot owner hired bigger idiots and didn't bother to give them one ounce of training. On top of that their prices are ridiculous, $11 bucks for a footling meatball which is normally like $8.

Bernasteen R.

Yelp
They have new owners and new prices that are not on the menu. The guy fixed my breakfast sandwich, then went and rung me up on the register. Came back and thought he was going to finish fixing my sandwich WITHOUT CHANGING HIS GLOVES. I told him that he needed NEW GLOVES. So b careful when you eat out of that Subway, not good

Melissa M.

Yelp
I just have to give a shout-out for the sweet woman who works (by herself) most weekdays. I work nearby and come here somewhat often and she is always so kind and efficient. Unfortunately she has to deal with a lot at this location, including people on drugs, loitering, and I'm sure some other crime. Today, I watched her calmly and patiently handle several different rude and entitled men having absolute conniption fits about waiting to place an order. It's a sandwich my dudes, y'all need to calm down.

Yelp
The design of the place is creative, but the area is sketchy. The food is the same as any other subway but I gave it two stars for a couple of reasons. 1. The portion that they will give you is pretty small. I ordered a Philly steak sandwich which I order all the time from Subway. For some reason, this one was ridiculously small portion and when I asked him about it, he said they use the same scoops as other subways but reluctantly gave me a tiny bit more. I found out that's actually not true, from a friend of a friend that has a subway franchise. As he explained it, every store is franchised and owned by individuals, and they have the luxury of use using their own measurements or scoops to determine the portion for each order. 2. Cleanliness - if you are sick, please stay at home. Do not go to work and make sandwiches sneezing every two seconds - ofcourse i kept saying bless you and feeling disgusted at the same time that you are making my sandwich - infecting it one sneeze at a time. So please stay at home or just at the register. In addition, you should've thrown the sandwich you were making and excused yourself to go to the bathroom to clean up. However, you would be wasting money by throwing the infected sandwich. To be honest, you don't even deserve the two stars..

Yelp
In defense of the 'asian lady' everyone keeps talking about. A shop this size should be staffed by at least 2 employees. This poor woman is stuck by herself at an intense location. I've seen her consistantly get harassed, yelled at and spit on by people in the store. I'm sure most of us would loose our cool after a while. Anytime I see her in there, I get very depressed as she is being exploited by the owners. They don't seem worried about poor customer service as they know they will continue to get business and save money on their payroll.

Tally W.

Yelp
Had an unfortunate and bad customer service experience here. Experience started bad and got worse as it proceeded. Went to order my sandwich and was immediately interrupted by the Vietnamese lady working there, before I could get to what kind of bread I wanted it on. Where the situation imploded was when she demanded I tell her what vegetables I wanted on it while my order was being toasted. I asked her to wait while I was deciding, but then once my sandwich was out of the toaster she refused to put anything on my order until I told her every vegetable I wanted on it. When I politely asked her to put lettuce on my order she threw my order to the side and decided to not finish my order, because I was waiting for her to actually put the ingredients on my sandwich. If this is the quality of people that work here, I dont recommend coming to this location, ever.

Yelp
Have been going to this Subway for a few months now since I moved to the area, and have been very pleasantly impressed. For the rugged area it's in, you have to commend the workers for what they put up with on a daily basis (and with being open so late). The Hispanic guy, tall lady, and Asian woman have all been great whenever I come in. They have to put up with a lot and work alone, but they always are chatty and friendly whenever my boyfriend and I come in.

Ethan A.

Yelp
great service loved the guy right before the drake concert

Yelp
Possibly the worst subway I have ever been to. Food seems stale and the employees are rude and argue amongst themselves. There is an Asian lady who seems to own/ manage the place, very rude to customers as well as other employees of the place. They don't do the Sub of the day specials either. Better options are around in the area. I would stay away from this place

Jasmine D.

Yelp
The woman who was working was very organized and accommodating when we brought in a large group. She was very patient and kind. Food was good too.

Richard B.

Yelp
I personally liked this subway, the lady was fast. The portion of meat was goo, pleasantly surprised. :)

Juliet G.

Yelp
WORST SUBWAY EVER ! The lady that is Asian is super disrespectful every time I come in she lies about the items they have and doesn't feel like looking to the back to get what I asked for but every time anyone else is working they always get the items that they don't have put out regardless. She's super rude to everyone I see her interact with. Refused me service because I asked her to check. I know she's lying but chooses to be rude and told a customer to hurry up because she had things to do. I even came in during store hours one day in my break and she didn't even have the store open. Terrible employing on multiple interactions. Her customer service is terrible and she should not work in customer service she also refused to give me any management information for her name. I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED SOMEONE SO RUDE she even took her mask off in the back when she was working with the food prep. Terrible terrible terrible I'm so upset with the service I have continuously got from this one specific worker and I feel like I can't even come in to eat on my break when she's there.

Yelp
Worst Subway EVER! PLEASE AVOIDE!!! We were browsing the city and stopped by this subway for a rest! I saw the restroom sign said customer only so I decided at least to buy something instead of taking advantage of the business. The Asian lady started to question us while we waited in the line for restroom and she started to hit the restroom door and scream at us. Are you serious?! What kind of business is this? I think Subway should really consider training the staff and owner for better customer service before it does more damage to their image!!!
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
The old Asian woman who works at this Subway is bat-shit crazy. She doesn't know how to use the POS system and she charged me twice. When I disputed this she yelled and then threw my receipt at me. Look, I get that it's a Subway and my bar for customer service was already pretty low, but I won't eat here again and I would suggest you don't either.
google avatar

Yelp
Lol 3rd and Lenora. Area is not the least sketchy place I've ever been, but you're downtown so what should one expect? I've been here a few times, and EVERY time without fail there are homeless/ratchet ass people chasing or at least yelling at each other (or at no one..) outside. Enough of the location. The prices are skyhigh for a Subway ($7 for a footlong, 5$ for a 6 inch). This is THE most expensive Subway I've seen. Quality is consistently average for a Subway. The bell peppers were under ripe and overly crunchy. But the flatbread was better than I've had other places. 3 stars for food? They used to flat-out not even give you plastic cups for water. As of today 7/13/2016, I was able to get one with my overpriced sandvich. I could count many better subways than poorer ones compared to this store. Unless your bus stops nearby like mine does, I'd go to any other Subway than here.
google avatar

Miliardo P.

Yelp
This was my first experience in Seattle and YIKES! The same old woman was horribly rude. She wanted to try to demean me for my order, then she started yelling at me, on top of everything else she messed up my VERY simple order. Oh and that was on top the place was a den of homeless people. The winner was the homeless woman who dropped her pants and peed right there. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE, it's horrible and more than a little dangerous
google avatar

Sonya W.

Yelp
I've been here several times since it's pretty close to my friend's apartment and we eat at Subway pretty often. I don't give one star reviews often, but this location is AWFUL!! The staff is just rude. We visited last night and I ordered a 6" veggie sub. When it got to the toppings, I asked for extra olives. The woman put on about seven and, as I always do regarding olives at Subway, asked if I could have a few more. She immediately snapped at me, "You have to pay for more. You're only supposed to get THREE. You already have more than THREE TIMES that many!" Excuse me?? I ordered a VEGGIE SUB and I can't even have the veggies on the sandwich that I want? I refused to pay more for additional olives, so I just sort of snapped back, "Okay, fine then" and let it go. What could I do? I know that the "three of everything" rule does apply at Subway, but THREE OLIVES? Really? You've got to be kidding me. Stuff like that always happens here. And it's not only the staff that suck. The people that come here to order are always a little strange. 75% of the time I've been here there's always been some problem with a homeless person wanting to use the restroom or someone staying in the restroom and refusing to come out. Odd things like that. It's just not a good atmosphere for eating a sandwich. I do not recommend this location.
google avatar

R B.

Yelp
I have no clue how the mid-aged Asian lady is employed here. She is extremely rude and her English is so poor that I can't even comprehend what shes saying. Keep in mind, I'm Asian as well and I've interacted with many FOB's in the past. FYI: FOB = Fresh off the Boat..
google avatar

Michelle E.

Yelp
I have been going to this subway for over a year everyday paying the higher prices. Yesterday the lady made my sandwich with the wrong bread. I let it go as it wasn't a big deal but the bread she gave me was not pleasant. Today 1/8/19 I went in to order my sandwich . I told the lady from yesterday that she gave me the wrong bread and that I didn't like it and to make sure that she used the Italian bread and her response was " yeah , yeah , yeah. I spend at least 7 to 10 dollars a day 5 days a week at this location and to have her be so rude is not OK. The young man that works there is very nice and makes a great sandwich . Because of the ladies behavior today I won't be going back to this location, FYI do the math $7-10 a day 5 days a week 12 months that adds up lots of money walking out the door because she couldn't provide proper customer service.
google avatar

Marc M.

Yelp
Visiting this place reminds me why I rarely go to Subway any more. Their sandwiches all taste the same which is to say they all lack any real type of flavor at all. The quality of the ingredients for this chain is on par with any other type of fast food although they give the appearance of "freshness" because they make sandwiches, not deep fried stuff. The place was fairly clean and the staff worked through the line in an efficient manner. I have nothing bad to say about this particular Subway location, but at the same time it is about as generic and bland as the rest of the chain. Pretty much as expected.
google avatar

Thomas L.

Yelp
Love subway / *Hate* the 3rd and Lenora shop - Horrible customer satisfaction. 12/13/ 2013 Welcome to toppings scrooge central! No cups of water, If you ask for shredded cheese you will be hard pressed to find any on your sandwich when it's complete. It is clear that the staff is trained to add as little of toppings per sandwich as possible. Service is perfunctory at best. You are *far* better off walking farther to any of the other downtown subways to get a better sandwich experience. This place should be avoided. UPDATE:5/15/2017 I work across the street from this location. The food is fine. Cleanliness is usually decent. There are a lot of homeless in the area, but that is usually not an issue. My 1 star review is solely for the old lady that works here. The term "Sandwich Nazi" would be too demeaning for those misguided enough to fight for Hilter. She is the worst. Rude, and always a sourpuss and an obstructionist when you are trying to have your sandwich built to your liking. This is the ONLY subway I take coupons too as they seem to drive her insane and fill her with an inner rage. I take extreme satisfaction from this (I know I shouldn't... working on it.). Not much has improved in 2 years.
google avatar

Chris J.

Yelp
4 times in the last 30 days I have hurried to make it to this location before 11pm (posted closing time) after I get out of work only to find the lights out and everyone gone home before the posted closing time, also as early as 10:40. Today I walked in the lower door at 10:55 to find everything put away and told that they were closed because it was 11 when clearly it was not.
google avatar

Tex M.

Yelp
Lady that works here all the time is incredibly rude and tries to overcharge me. "Extra spinach" apparently is an extra dollar on a veggie sandwich here. When listing off the veggies on my sandwich, I usually go one at a time to make sure they don't default to put lettuce on there, which is a common problem as I'm allergic. Every time I finish the last syllable of the veggie, she says "ANYTHING ELSE??" impatiently. Not exactly the nicest thing in the world.
google avatar

Peter L.

Yelp
The food was ok, but probably below average overall for a subway. The person making the sandwiches seemed nice but I couldn't understand much of what she said. She's clearly not an english scholar, to say the least. Within a 10 minute walk there are many different subway options available: I'm not sure why anyone would pick this one above any of the other choices. If you're feeling lazy or the weather is uber-crappy, I suppose this is an option.
google avatar

Diego S.

Yelp
I've officially been here twice, and both times the service was very good seeing that both times I have been in it was late.. they stay open til 11pm weekdays.. !!! The place always seems to have a lot of people in it, eating and not just loitering.
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Messed up my order completely. Employees do not speak enough English to make a sandwich correctly. I said a six inch they made me a foot long. I said onions they put black olives on. I tried to explain the problem they didn't seem to care or want to resolve the problem.
google avatar

Aryk M.

Yelp
This Subway should be ashamed. I was just, very rudely, told to stop talking to the person I was with and be ready to order, because they close in 5 minutes. Apparently our $20+ dollars in orders weren't worth some manners and respect. And I will add, that if the employee had just informed us they were closing, politely, then this review wouldn't even exist. I don't expect anyone to stay late; I fully expect customer service. Update: The franchise owner contacted me and assured me that their staff would be re-trained and offered an apology. I added an additional star for the reply.

C C.

Yelp
Subway membership card scan doesn't work here! Can't ever understand a word the Asian woman who works here says (and neither can anyone else from what I can see).
google avatar

Grindy S.

Yelp
Lunch rush in downtown Seattle and only one person on the sandwich line - what could be worse? How about when that one person decides to chat up every customer he serves while other customers are left waiting? How about prices that are 10-25% more than every other Subway? FAIL!
google avatar

Aziz S.

Yelp
Went here last night and the old Asian lady in there was super rude and disrespectful. She told me she didn't have time to wait for me to make my decisions when I was the only customer there....then when she rang me up the total was 13$, she laughed and exclaimed "Very Expensive!" as if she was proud of the price she had given me. What a horrible weird place to get a sandwich.

Jessica W.

Yelp
I go into this location often as I work with a company nearby. Every time I go in the old asian lady (I am unsure of her name as there is never a name tag) is extremely rude. I have also seen her get into altercations with other customers. I saw her scream at someone to get out because they attempted to get a pop refill. I went into today to get lunch and received an important call which I answered and proceeded to talk inside before ordering. I was probably on the phone for 2 minutes before she blasted the music because I was on the phone and made a snarky comment at me. I don't think I will return to this location. I think Subway needs to rethink this hire as this is not a way to treat customers or just other human beings in general.
google avatar

Carla F.

Yelp
This has been the worst place by far that I have dined in. The Asian lady that attended us had no manners and was hurrying us the entire time, especially considering that she did not have any customers waiting. She was rude in various different occasions. I was so dissatisfied that I asked her for the managers name; she responded by telling me that she was not going to give it to me. I will not ever go into that place nor recommend it.

Lisa D.

Yelp
There is a really nice lady that works here at night, that has been nice to me everytime I have been there, their stuff always seems fresh. A bit pricy but that is downtown. I have many times witnessed these employees stopping theft and bad behavior here.

Garry S.

Yelp
Took a chance on a Monday night at 7 pm since the kids were hungry and couldn't agree on anything else. Service was very good and the lady couldn't have been more accommodating. Got everything we wanted with no fuss. Standard fresh Subway fare tasted just as expected. The other clientele was very "eclectic" shall we say. Weird but harmless.

Sharon F.

Yelp
I saw on the internet that the footlong sandwiches of the day were $6.00. I walk over to get a sandwich and I was told that the sandwiches in other areas were $6.00 but in my working area they were $7.00. If that were the cause your add should have read $6.00 in certain areas. I think that is bad business. I came back to work and sent out and email about the price difference and a lot of the staff said they were not going to the belltown Subway anymore because we have already notice the price hike and the cut in good service. Subways have lost a lot of it personality since the face of Subway was taken down and put in prison.

Jordan S.

Yelp
if they didn't hire child molesters for pitchmen, the $5 footlong wouldn't be $6.... They have to pay lawyers...
google avatar

Brad R.

Yelp
I like the store, i like the employees, but i hate that asian lady manager that works during the day, She ALWAYS shorts me on the scooped chicken. when you buy a chicken sandwich like buffalo chicken, the footlong is supposed to get full scoops of chicken. she ALWAYS gives me 1/2 or maybe a tiny more than half. Ive had to file a complaint against her twice now. The hispanic lady at nite is way cool. she always is very friendly. The other employees are all nice too, Ive had no problems from ANYONE there except that manager. They need to can that biotch. Sorry... thats how i feel though. I even pointed it out to her one day by saying "Look at that scoop right there... thats not a full scoop" and she replied " you want double meat, you pay for double meat"... that was the 2nd time i filed a complaint. Another time was i had a coupon for buy 1/2 get 1/2 half free, And i told her i want double meat on both and i would pay for it, and she kept telling me "no double meat, not double meat".... i kept saying i would pay for it.... that wa the first time i filed a complaint. they need to can her stupid ass. So.... If it wasnt for her i would give that store 4 or 5 stars but because of her.... 1 star

Kathleen G.

Yelp
I went to this subway. Ordered a sandwich with turkey and got a chicken one instead. I said it was okay. Half way through the sandwich I found a bone in the chicken. when I mention this to the staff all I got was we do not cut the meat here and sorry. when I mentioned I could have choked on it all I got was sorry. The staff isn't trained right to deal with the public.
