"About as good as brunch gets on Cape Ann. Sugar Magnolias (cue the best Grateful Dead song) does a lot of things well. Get the crab cake Benedict, then hop in the car and book it to Good Harbor Beach. Sugar Magnolias is not requiring its customers to wear masks." - Terrence Doyle

Went for lunch on a Friday, everyone I was with loved their meals. I got the BLTT with broccoli slaw. Was able to come back for breakfast a few months later. So so good, definitely recommend. Great sweet and savory breakfast options. Friendly staff.

Google
The menu accommodates all taste palettes and has a variety of different style pancakes, French Toast and Eggs Benedict selections which I loved. I ordered two breakfasts for the perfect 1st time experience here of salty and sweet with the Crab Cakes Eggs Benedict and the Monkey Bread French Toast... amazing!!!! Our server Rachel was great and attentive. We were seated pretty quickly. On street parking is available. If you're staying locally close in town it's convenient to walk to and is around other restaurants and shopping stores. Would definitely come back.

Google
Very tasty omelet and eggs! Well cooked bacon and nice service. The crab cakes were tasty, but not crab lumpy enough for my taste. Everything else was great!

Google
One of my favorite break spots in the North Shore. Always a great assortment of pancakes, omelets and healthy choices. Staff is very pleasant. Parking can be tricky depending on the day of the week and prices are high for breakfast, but worth the trip for a breakfast treat!

Google
The food here is EXCEPTIONAL, and dining here is ALWAYS worth the wait. I highly recommend the porridge, the pancakes, the eggs bene, and also the crazy monkey French toast!

Google
Excellent customer service! My husband and I found this place while taking a trip to Gloucester, and even though it is a little far from our house, we keep coming back because of the delicious food and great customer service. We also love how the menu is constantly changing with the seasons. Most recently, we had the salmon benedict and autumn harvest quesadilla. The Benedict had generous portions of salmon, perfectly poached eggs and delicious hollandaise sauce, and had a spicy buffalo type sauce for the tater tots. The autumn harvest quesadilla was stuffed with squash and was accompanied by a tasty homemade salsa. The quesadillas are one of the things that are always changing. I look forward to going back and seeing what is next.

Love the decor, busy for breakfast but worth the wait. Great benedicts! Unfortunate hours, though. No service after 1:00 was a disappointment.

Google
Truly one of the worst customer service experiences and lattes I have ever had. This place wouldn’t survive in Salem, MA. Menu outside was not completely accurate which made ordering a bit of a challenge. I politely asked the older woman who served us if we could have our money back for the Coffee and Latte we bought. She said, “I mean what’s wrong with it, its a coffee and a latte”. It tasted watered down and wasn’t worth $4 each. Aside from that, terrible service. They gave cash back when we used a debit card and also tried keeping the tip. I then went inside and asked to have the tip removed. Customer service was horrible. I asked for plain yogurt and granola and received both in a 4 ounce cup because usually people have equal amounts of yogurt and granola. Omelette was flavorless. The grilled blueberry muffin was good though. Won’t recommend this place and will never come back.

Yelp
After year(s) of waiting and fervently hoping for news of reopening, we went by today and saw that construction is under way for a Greek restaurant. Hats off to our all time favorite breakfast place and all our wonderful servers. How I will miss an East Main.

Theresa M.

Yelp
I don't think I can rave enough about this little establishment. Irish Benedict and the crazy monkey French toast for the win! Don't forget to get a short stack of pancakes unless you are extra, extra hungry.

Janis T.

Yelp
Have you reopened yet?? We live and miss this restaurant. Has the insurance come across yet from the flood??

Megan B.

Yelp
Amazing. A favorite. Love the food and the service. Hope they reopen soon if they haven't already.

Robert J.

Yelp
Looking forward to reopening. Excellent lobster omelettes, carrot cake pancakes. Highly recommend

Lili G.

Yelp
Omg sooo good we had to go back the next day. Those Ricotta Lemon pancakes were incredible!!

Gary N.

Yelp
Love this small local place downtown. Friendly service and great breakfast was on my mind. Had pancakes, toast, eggs, bacon. All great and the women working were very nice to this southern boy driving through. If your in this area this is the perfect stop for a local scene.

Maram A.

Yelp
This is a very busy place and it is really loved. It was busy with locals and tourists. I ordered the pineapple fritters my first time here with a cup of coffee. They were fine, nothing special but I would not order them again. The next time I came I ordered The Cluck egg sandwich, which was a maple chicken sausage sandwich with pesto and smoked mozzarella cheese. The chicken sausage was delicious but the other flavors did not blend well. It was the wrong flavor combination. They should add a saltier cheese to balance the sweetness with the maple from the chicken. Anyway, my friends ordered pancakes and french toast and they loved it. I think next time I will opt for that. The coffee is kind of week so opt for a juice or tea if you like your joe strong. Mera's Tip: Have some pancakes.

Yelp
Suggestion---How about updating your website to indicate that you are closed for the foreseeable future so your customers do not go to meet there for lunch only to find out you are closed, with no planned opening date. It would take minimal effort on your part to provide correct information on your own website, which currently indicates you are open as of April 15th from Wednesday thru Sunday. Also update your hours on yelp.

Yelp
Ok sorry Sugar Mags been here countless times over the years since living on Cape Ann and have yet to give you your shining review. As a professional chef myself this is my "go to" for breakfast on a rare day off. Don't pass up the pineapple fritters and I'm a fan of there sweet potato hash with pork shoulder that has a subtle sweetness from the addition of shredded carrot with eggs and cornbread, but check out the daily specials also. Just go!!

Sakura T.

Yelp
Happy to see local restaurants managing the pandemic! Since reopening, this place is take-out only. HOWEVER, once you get your food, you can seat yourself at one of their outdoor tables. This place is located on a cute, quiet, and quaint street. Very varied and affordable breakfast menu. I tried a short stack (one big pancake) of their lemon pancake, which came with a lemon icing. Loved it! Girl at the counter was a little cold though. Also, their restroom is closed. I understand that they are not obligated to open them, but if a restaurant offers seating, I think they should open the restrooms. Overall though, I would come here again!

Cindy B.

Yelp
Simply the best breakfast! We are big breakfast people and are always excited to come to Sugar Mags. Usually someone gets the Hash and Eggs it's a fan favorite. Last week I got the carrot cake pancakes and found my new go to!

Hayley S.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast and everything was absolutely delicious my group ordered the so good omelette and the J&J burrito with some ice coffees! The food was amazing and quite large portions, highly recommend this breakfast spot!

Corey L.

Yelp
Sunday at 8am, nearly full Good, quick service Giant menu that doesn't even pretend our breakfast foods aren't just junk food - and they do it well. I got a s'mores French toast. It was awesome. Huge, so much marshmallow and chocolate. I ate half, which was probably half a lifetime's worth of sugar and immediately slipped into a diabetic coma of delight. Upon awakening, I found myself surrounded by sugar zombies in a new world of horrors beyond belief. My wife got some sort of lemon pancakes special that she quite enjoyed.

Sasa T.

Yelp
It was packed, but the service is fast and friendly. We tried the Cluck sandwich, hot fried egg with feta and pita, eggs with crab cakes, and the hash and eggs - which hands down was the best - but it was allllll good. If I had room, I would've gotten the blueberry muffin. It looked decadent. A local recommended this place and it did not disappoint - just try to arrive before 10am!

Lindsay G.

Yelp
Visiting for the day and came across this restaurant as highly rated and decided to give it a try. Amazing food, huge menu with lot of options and attentive service by Amy! We highly recommend and would come back in a second!!

Bob K.

Yelp
Decent enough food. But, and I know it is picky, I have a terrible case of screaming ear ringing that escalates for weeks after exposure to big noise. Especially loud female voices. Sugar Mags is ground zero. Can't go there.

Reyna P.

Yelp
Cute little restaurant tucked in amongst boutiques and other eateries. Parking wasn't an issue, but we were there on a weekday morning in October so I'm sure that had a lot to do with it. The restaurant is small & the tables fill up fast, but luckily there was no wait time. Our waitress was very friendly and very attentive. We ordered the Pineapple Fritters to start & they were delish! They were fried donut holes with a dippable glaze and a side of fresh pineapple. I ordered the French toast with bacon, eggs, & potatoes. The French toast slices were large, so I wasn't even able to finish everything. The price was good for the size of portions. All in all it was a good experience.

Julia B.

Yelp
"JULIA"!!!! OK, so the food and service was great but the incessant SCREAMING of the OWNER from the kitchen of Poor Julia was one of the weirdest most unnecessary and off putting things I've ever experienced at a restaurant before in my life! Not to mention my own name is Julia, so I found it EXTRA annoying and anxiety inducing. I'm a new local and I'd love to frequent this place because as I said the food is great, but the owner needs to promise me she'll stop doing this immediately! It's 2021, Invest in some buzzers! If you make me that promise I'll delete this review! Poor Julia! Who's a sweetheart by the way! Stop ruining our good name! ‍

Darla S.

Yelp
Undoubtedly, top notch for breakfast! I adored their pineapple fritters along with traditional eggs and ham. Delish! Husband got the sausage hash (which I doubt he'd order again) with eggs but was sent over the edge with their sweet bread!! Without doubt, next time, we'll both be up for French toast variations made with that decadent sweet bread!

Pete T.

Yelp
Our last stop before leaving Gloucester. Very good breakfast with excellent French Toast. And the coffee is excellent.

Alex V.

Yelp
Loved eating a terrific breakfast outside in the wonderful downtown of Gloucester. And that's a lot of adjectives I know. Everything was great. Lemon pancakes, large egg sandwich were spot on. The French toast was next level good. Crispy and soft... just a "wow I fcking like this " when it hits your lips. Service was good too. Very safe with this shtty new world we live in... masks all up in here. I had to ask for extra ketchup ... hate that sht. Like I dropped 50 on breakfast don't make me beg for ketchup.

Elizabeth F.

Yelp
Omg first of all this was our first time here for breakfast It was about 25 minutes wait, you can serve yourself coffee flavored or regular while you wait, worth the wait!! I had the best veggie omelette it was to die for !!! Trust me it was from FRESH vegetables NOT can! The melted Swiss cheese and by the way they put a lot of cheese which is awesome we also had the crazy monkey French toast with banana omg my favorite we all shared this. I had ordered plain pancake I was not impressed because it kind of had a lemony taste to it, I didn't care for it. But the food was great!!! The staff was very nice and friendly very pleased I can't wait for Sunday!!! We are going to come back

Anthony S.

Yelp
Best breakfast spot possibly ever. Their potatoes are out of this world.Oh, and great lunch too!

Lisa R.

Yelp
amazing food with even better staff, we went when there was a huge line at the door and the hostess Sarina was more than accommodating, and made us lattes while we waited, while also dealing with a whole crowd behind us. Our waiter was so kind and polite i think her name was Julia and the food was AMAZING. PINEAPPLE FRITTERS omg must try!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Colby S.

Yelp
Came to Gloucester to see the castle (Hammond museum) to watch the sunrise (absolutely beautiful) and decided we would get breakfast after! We came across sugar magnolias and immediately liked its welcoming feel! Upon walking through the doors we were pleasantly greeted by one of the girls! We sat at the counter (which was empty at the time) and were given menus and offered coffee. Before we realized it we were surrounded by a diner full of guests and the plates came rocking out of their open kitchen. All the staff was helpful and smiling. The coffee was pouring left and right and the belts were popping as the bellies filled! As we rolled our ourselves out, a warm, gracious, and cheerful "thank you came from the breakfast bar as the team of servers began to clean the battlegrounds. Great work ladies! Job well done! Colby and Brittany!

Alicia L.

Yelp
Always go here when we are in town. The quality, quantity and value cannot be beat! Best breakfast spot in town.

Joh. W.

Yelp
There are several really nice places to eat in Gloucester. However due to Covid & being a Tuesday afternoon there wasn't much open for dining inside or out. Driving thru Main St perhaps it was the way the sun was? Or whatever? It was quite difficult to see if this restaurant was open. My friend had to get out of the car & check the door. Anyway, I will also note that with the exceptionally light traffic, open parking spaces it felt strange... It's obvious that people are staying home. We decided to go inside. The place looks very different from what I remember. The bar obviously is not open - tables, what there were of them spaced more than 6' apart, and a sparse amount of diners.... Yes, according to the mandates that's how it should be. We sat at one of the far tables and greeted by our server. We ordered coffee straight away. My dining companion was served sugar in a plastic shot size glass but noticed there wasn't a spoon to add it to his coffee... It was time to order our lunch and I noticed the change in the menu... Probably due to operating during the pandemic. We both decided on wraps with different sides. They came rather quickly. To be honest it was just bleh.. the best part of mine was the side of freshly cut fruit. I devoured it. My companion felt his wrap was inedible. So he ate a good portion of fries & had more coffee. We would have appreciated it if the server had asked if we needed anything? Or how were our meals? But that didn't happen. Oh well...What can you do? We are just very lucky to have anything open during this time.

Suzanne S.

Yelp
Had a meal at Sugar Mags yesterday that I have to share. i rarely -- if ever? -- write a YELP but it was so darn good. I am a city person -- SF and NY -- so i'm not always impressed by other cities' offerings, the bar having been set pretty high. But I was very impressed. The staff was gracious and helpful; my meal was a delicious omelet with asparagus, sweet potatoes, ham and other goodies... I'm not big on ham, but I went for it and was so glad that i did. The omelet was big and I was sure that I would not finish it but I had no trouble. Even the toast was swoon-worthy. Toast, people! My meal carried me thru the rest of the day, even thru an afternoon hike. Again, props to the staff. I was trying to pull off a birthday cake with candles at an outside table (yeah right LOL) ; they were so helpful and patient. I am sure that i did not express my thanks, enough. Thank you Sugar Magnolia. I will be back. And next time no cake. ; )

Christopher P.

Yelp
Amazing food!! French toast was fantastic and the omelette's were fresh, fluffy and packed with ingredients. I will say that our waitress was awful, I understand that Sunday's are busy but 2 tables that sat AFTER us waiting upon by someone else were seated, orders taken, food brought, eaten, paid for and left even before we got our food. Obviously it wasn't the kitchen that was the bottleneck, it was the waitress who didn't even apologize. She definitely forgot to place the order and that is why Sugar Magnolias doesn't get 5 stars. Bottom line - Food amazing, service was awful.

Debbie H.

Yelp
We went for breakfast after spending the morning on the beach walking. We ate way too much because we had to try the pineapple fritters along with our breakfast of banana French toast and an omelette. Everything was delicious and the staff were friendly and attentive. There was a wait so be prepared but it was only about 10-15 min.

Bianca H.

Yelp
I went into downtown Gloucester to pick up several items from Premier Imprints. When I arrived I realized they didn't open until 10. Naturally, my first instinct was screaming COFFEE. I wanted to go somewhere with a nice brunch. Sugar Magnolia's was the perfect choice! The hollandaise had just the right amount of flavor and the eggs were cooked perfect. I added bacon and eggs on and had a piping hot cup o' joe. Service was fast and friendly! I managed to get our right around 10 and got the day going on a positive note. Definitely check out Sugar Magnolia's for brunch specials and mimosas *mm*

Jena J.

Yelp
If you are visiting Gloucester, in town for the weekend, or just plain live here all the time, you have to go to sugar mags for breakfast. Period. It's delicious AND the kicker for me is that they don't just have your classic greasy diner fare. Example: the fig and greens sandwich. You can get a lighter, yummy breakfast here, or go all in with a grilled muffin with melted butter on top. I also like that the place seems to be pretty much completely run by some great women :)

Susan S.

Yelp
Breakfast this morning required a half hour wait and service that was a bit slow, however the food was delicious and totally worth it. We stumbled upon this little gem today. An early morning trip to Gloucester to enjoy some ocean air brought us to the area. As we strolled down Main Street past this little restaurant, the door was open and the amazing scent of breakfast wafted in our direction. We suddenly realized we were hungry, and despite the crowd we walked in and added our name to the list. The restaurant is small and tables are close together. There is seating at a large counter near the back, several tables, and a smaller counter with window seating at the front. This small counter/table is shared and we were seated close, but not too close, to other diners. We enjoyed people watching on Main Street from our perch at the window seat. And people watching helped pass the time as we waited for breakfast, which definitely seemed to take its sweet time this morning. We also couldn't help but discreetly stare at the woman near us indulge in what we later learned was a carrot cake pancake. It looked amazing. I chose my usual bacon and scrambled eggs. They were delish, cooked perfectly, with some really good home fries on the side. My friend had the French toast which she raved about. I tried a bite and agreed it was good, although I don't eat French toast often and may not be the best judge. The menu had lots of unique breakfast offerings including build your own omelettes and a variety of egg and cheese sandwiches. I played it safe with my old standby, but had my eye on the egg, cheese, and arugula sandwich or crab cakes and eggs- next time! They offer a brunch and lunch menu here as well. Our server was sweet and friendly and so was some of the other staff we interacted with. It's easy to see why this place is so crowded on a Sunday morning.

Kelly P.

Yelp
French toast is fantastic, my boyfriend's burrito was equally delicious! Very cute atmosphere too.

Arjun J.

Yelp
I went here for breakfast two days in a row while visiting a friend in the area. Most likely the best breakfast Ive ever had. The first day I had an omelette and banana-walnut pancakes. The second day I just had banana-walnut pancakes. They were excellent. Coffee and Espresso tasted great. Service was great too. Prices for two people with more then one dish, coffees, and espressos was under $35. Which would have been more at places by me (Long Island, NY) I look forward to stopping at Sugar Magnolia's again.

Bob S.

Yelp
Was in Gloucester for the weekend and had to eat at our favorite breakfast place. I had the Crab Cake Benedict and it was perfectly prepared from the English Muffin to the Hollandaise sauce. Can't wait to go back again. Everyone who works there is super nice!

Jazmine K.

Yelp
Since 2014 I've been dying to revisit Sugar Magnolias because of their exquisite pancake choices. Knowing my friend shared in my love of pancakes, I wanted to share these magical pancakes with her. After consulting the menu many times we set our hearts on the type of pancakes we would order upon arrival. After driving the 35 miles, taking us over an hour to get there, we walked in the door at precisely 11:05 and were informed that we could only order breakfast til 11:00. We were flabbergasted that there was a time frame on breakfast orders, as no mention of breakfast expiration was listed anywhere on their website. So for future pancake enthusiasts, make sure you arrive before 11:00 or you will be forced to order lunch. P.S. The Lucy sandwich, while it is no pancake, it was a nice breakfast substitute, and comes with a variety of fruit option.

Scott M.

Yelp
all four breakfast plates were awesome. the staff is great and very friendly. hash and eggs with cornbread so so good. three omelettes and all three were delicious. we just needed a nice alcohol drink to too this off. hopefully next year there are bloody Mary's with the breakfast.

Arl- T.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this place! We went for Breakfast, everything was delicious. We split to lemon ricotta pancake for the table...it was amazing !!

Stacy G.

Yelp
Best breakfast in a looooong time! The veggie omelet was full of fresh and perfectly cooked vegetables. Everything was seasoned well and my spouse has never seen a serving of bacon so big ( with the one -egg breakfast). The French toast was also well soaked and just the perfect amount of sweet. This will be a place we frequent often. No complaints.

Katherine P.

Yelp
We loved this place. We had a bit of a hard time finding parking, so arrive early and if there's nothing on the street, park down by the water. We got in and were told it was a 45 minute wait, but it turned out to be only 15. While we waited there was serve yourself coffee (some flavored some not) and samples of muffins. Our wait staff was extremely friendly and kind - we didn't get the cranky waitress from other posts. The food was delicious (I had the pumpkin ricotta pancakes from the specials board which were unbelievably good.) My daughter had the French toast which lives up to the hype. This place is well worth the wait and the crowd. Enjoy!

Bella R.

Yelp
Went here for a friends birthday brunch. The place was extremely busy which is understandable considering it was a beautiful Sunday morning. The wait was around 45 minutes but we did not mind. We got seated and were asked what we wanted to drink. 15 minutes go by and the waitress asks us what we want to drink AGAIN and then takes our food order. Another 25 minutes goes by STILL no drinks and our food comes and then we are asked to order drinks once again. Unacceptable service. The food however was phenomenal and that's why I am leaving a 3 star rating. Once we were done with food we were going to order another round of drinks but were given the check and rushed out of there. We understand these are times where many places are understaffed so we would like to return sometime but we were especially disappointed with this visit.

Martin C.

Yelp
OMG! We just pulled into town and found this place on the GPS. The charm of sails on the walls let alone the name gives a Grateful Dead zeal. I had the corn chowder and then the cheese burger. OMG! So good. The place is a bit busy but service is great!

Brian E.

Yelp
Perfect brunch spot if you're willing to wait a few minutes for this popular eatery. They had a pretty diverse menu which was a warm welcome from the standard brunch options. I wasn't a huge fan of their corned beef hash, but got it for the corn bread which was freakin awesome. They also serve alcohol here so you can get down on some delish mimosas. Cheers!

Arnie S.

Yelp
A must for breakfast. This is the second time we've been here, and it never disappoints. Very hip, and the service is excellent. They're known for their pineapple fritters. Don't miss them! The veggie omelette is filled with large broccoli, onion, tomato. The potatoes are flavorful, the coffee cup constantly filled. We had one of the best blueberry muffins ever, loaded with so much fruit that it seemed to outnumber the batter. The smoked pork hash is very rich, and it goes great with the perfectly cooked over easy eggs. You never leave feeling hungry..the way breakfast should be! A must visit!

Nick D.

Yelp
Horrible experience. I would give this a negative rating if I could. we arrived at 11:55 and where rudely told that they were closed. This was over an hour before the poster 1pm closing time on their window. I would not recommend after the way i was treated by the staff after asking about the time.

Rob H.

Yelp
Lunch here is delicious. The Caribbean corn chowder is a favorite. They have a great list of salads that actually makes you want to eat a salad. Daily specials like the brisket grilled cheese are not to be missed. Restaurant is well run and staff is excellent. Food is always well prepared and is one of the best restaurants in Gloucester. Only thing I would change would be expanded hours!

Damien S.

Yelp
Gloucester is the new wedding destination. At least it seems that way. And as weddings (rather, receptions) go, the need for a hearty brunch in the area soon becomes imminent. Yelp, you sly dog you. The vibe is Southern comfort in tight jeans, succotash and LA ink. Always busy, but if you're traveling +1, there's a chance for instant seats at the service bar. We started with the laureled pineapple fritters ($6), and while any red-blooded Breakfan loves 'em some fried dough in a saccharine glaze - these didn't do it for me. What Kara G calls "fritters deconstructed" ends up being plain doughnuts, a sweetened brown sugar/condensed milk syrup and fresh cut pineapple. Just fine, but far from legendary. What is the runaway star is the Irish Benedict - two poached ova ova a stellar smoked pork shoulder and carrot hash smothering a big ass hunk of cornbread. It's like all my favorite things ever drenched in lemony hollandaise. There were homefries too, but mother goose, I couldn't take my fork off the main course. And for $10, it's total bargain gourmet. I want to be there right now stuffing my face with this work of art and not stopping until we have a certified Se7en-grade stomach bursting. Gross? Lost your appetite? Great! More for me.

Al G.

Yelp
The best salmon wrap I ever ate! Food was delicious. Coffee was fresh as a Magnolia. Service was impeccable. Highly recommended.
