10 Best Hotels and Resorts in the British Virgin Islands - AFAR

"This boutique property on Tortola’s Emerald Coast centers around a 400-year-old stone sugar mill and offers just 24 rooms, combining historical charm with modernized decor and private balconies or terraces. Personal touches from managers who host a nightly cocktail party create an intimate atmosphere, and recent renovations added a new pool along with hammocks and apple-shaped cabanas for seaside lounging. Dining is led by two on-site restaurants: a fine-dining venue serving fresh lobster, steak, and Caribbean specialties, and a Mediterranean-inspired spot with pastas and seafood." - Lori A. May

I stayed here over Thanksgiving - it was my grand adventure - my first solo trip since my husband passed away in March. My goal was to see if I am able to travel alone. And I could not have chosen a better place! The Sugar Mill is a small hotel set on the hillside by the water of Apple bay. I began each day relaxing on my balcony with my tea, enjoying the sound of the waves and view of Jost Van Dyke (after dinner switch the view to the added sound of the tree frogs.) Small, quiet, excellent amenities with some of the best food I’ve had. The 7 day all-inclusive provided a day snorkeling from the catamaran captained by more than capable Fiona and an island tour hosted by Rupert whose hearty laugh and mischievous sense of humor was a delight added to the beauty of the island and its beaches. ||But best of all was the staff - everyone, from the owners to the managers to the housekeeping staff and all others in between- was welcoming, warm and caring. This was the best vacation and one I didn’t know I needed to refresh my soul. I will return!

A very relaxed short stay here which was just the chilled-out start to the new year we were looking for. Staff were lovely, room was great. Breakfast every day by the water’s edge was a tonic - who can say no to rum French toast?! We had dinner here two nights then ate out locally at Sebastian’s, Indigo Beach House and DCoalPot on other evenings, all three of which I’d recommend. You’d need a car if you’re based here, unless you really aren’t going to move much and/or are happy to use (expensive) taxis. As others have remarked, parking at the hotel is “interesting” due to the slopes and tight, angled spaces - we got upgraded to a bigger car at the airport and really wished we’d insisted on a smaller vehicle. There’s currently (Jan 2026) a “for sale” sign on the front of the property but I can’t imagine things change too much in the BVI too quickly even if ownership does change hands.

We had a waterfront view from our room, and overall, the room was okay. The second night, a sewage explosion occurred in the bathroom, with raw sewage rising up through the toilet and shower. The smell was unbelievable. The staff responded quickly to get a plumber out and were preparing another room in case we needed to move. The problem was fixed the next morning, and a cleaner was there immediately to sanitize the bathroom.|Another issue we had was that they overcharged us by $619 in incidentals, including 2 spa days, and one set of drinks that we were double-charged for. It is a huge pet peeve of mine when a hotel or resort charges incidentals after I've left, especially for things we didn't do or order. It took several rounds of communication to get it all refunded after more than a month. I was happy with the accommodations when we left, even after the plumbing problem, but the overcharge really frustrated me.

Lovely dining experience! We stayed at a villa nearby and came for dinner. The smoked duck was delicious! We also tried the escargot and lobster - both were tasty. It was a little humid in the dining area, so additional fans would have been nice. We took the dessert to go because it was too warm. Great service as well!

I wanted a short walk to the beach, laid back luxury tropical stay with a good restaurant and bar, a comfortable bed, working hot shower and cooling AC. We got that ++ some of the best service in the Caribbean. Had a perfectly relaxing stay and fell in love with this boutique hotel and its staff. They have an attitude here - and it’s HAPPY and committed to your enjoyable experience at Sugar Mill. My wife and I are so grateful to the entire crew for making our stay (and 11-hr commute) such a special trip worth every minute!

We had a great experience staying at the Sugar Mill hotel! Rupert and Andrea really made sure you felt at home and had everything you needed. We ate at the restaurant for breakfast and dinner several times and loved it every time! The food and service were amazing. Our room was beautiful and we loved all of the recent updates. We will definitely be back!
