This Caribbean Island Is the Birthplace of Reggae and Jerk Cooking

"Housed in an eighteenth-century sugar mill set within illuminated gardens, this fine-dining restaurant offers a white-tablecloth experience that blends Caribbean staples with elevated technique. Standout dishes range from pumpkin soup to jerk-seasoned grilled short ribs and fresh fish, and the dramatic historic setting contributes heavily to its reputation as one of the island's most celebrated dining rooms." - Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila is a bilingual travel writer, editor, and content marketer. We had a fantastic meal here, and the staff were so attentive. They were very keen to be part of our meal and explain what we were eating. The wine on choice was fantastic and they had some lovely French wine. The white burgundy was always a winner. There were some lovely breads and the sauces were delicious. The shredded carrot was well spiced and it paired well with the breads. There were some great choices on the menu, I had the lamb and requested it rare. It was a brilliant size portion, and it was beautifully cooked. The others on the table were very impressed with the food choices, but I thought my choice along with the tender loin was the best. The pudding options were brilliant, I had the mud slide and I was very impressed with the rum ice cream that came with it. A very good fusion of Jamaican and European cooking styles.

Sugarmill is a beautiful tranquil spot. Greeted promptly and professionally. Seated outdoors which we thought was a great idea for the ambiance of the place given time and sunset occasion etc... turned out not to be the best idea as the assortment of bugs proved to be a bit of an issues landing in the food etc. Seeing that some in my party were struggling with this I was surprised no one asked if we would like to relocate inside. Aside from that the food was delicious drinks were unique and out of this world. Beautiful place and worth the drive over from out resort for the food, drinks and view.

We were very excited to try this resturaunt as it was highly recommended by several staying at our resort in Montego Bay. We frequent the fine dining quite often, everywhere we go, and this place did nothing but disappoint. Service we found to be terrible. We spoke to our waiter twice during our 1.5 hour dinner. He took our drink/food order in the beginning and barely came back to check on our dinner, or if we wanted any more $18 drinks. He finally came back and we ordered a second round of martinis, and then we waited almost 30 minutes to get them. And they looked like they were sitting around for at least 15 minutes. The resturaunt was not busy by any means. For the money spent at this establishment we were very disappointed. A place that is expensive should have expensive service, and this place just did not. Food was not terrible, but average at best. Definitely not worth the $253 bill, nor the $50 taxi ride to get there. There is gratuity already added to the bill, so maybe that is why service is lacking.

We came here for dinner and the service was great, however I would definitely recommend coming in the afternoon, as you can see the grounds better in the sunlight. I ordered the short ribs, which I found to be slightly bitter and too fatty, but the desert was definitely the highlight. They also have a free shuttle to and from the restaurant which was a bonus. Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant, but save it for a special occasion as it can be quite pricy ($100 pp).

Restaurant service was fantastic. We had Jamaican Salad 👍, crayfish bisque 👍, Blackened fillet of Chilean sea bass 👍, grilled scallops 👏, Jerk Potato Au Gratin 💯(best dish), desert sorbets are amazing here too, ginger coconut was my favourite. Wasn’t cheap, but we really enjoyed the experience overall

My family visited the establishment on Christmas Day for dinner. We had a phenomenal time. The food and service were amazing. My only complaint was they had a live musician playing the clarinet and saxophone and it was a little too loud for the space but otherwise, everything was enjoyable.

Gorgeous setting in Montego Bay for an exquisite fine dining experience. The service, food, drinks and decor all make for a magical experience. We ordered the seafood trio & short rib and both tasted delicious. The team here frequently checks in to see if there is anything else you need and provide an exceptional experience. *If you are staying at Half Moon, be sure to coordinate for the shuttle, otherwise you might be stuck waiting (before & after)

Sugar Mill’s experience was one to remember - the food, service and atmosphere blended well o give you a lovely evening. The fish was the chef’s special and it was indeed special along with mini desserts after each meal. Unfortunately it rained, so there was no outdoor seating but there’s indoor and patio seating. Choose the water wheel area for full outdoor seating as that creates a spectacular backdrop and special area. Walk with a big budget especially if you’re spending local currency.
