Where to Find Essential Doughnuts Around D.C. | Eater DC

"This doughnut-maker out of Richmond, Virginia, landed in Alexandria before spreading to Arlington and then D.C. with a store in Shaw. Flavors range from simple to unique, like the Girl Scout cookie-style “Tastes Like a Samoa.” Chase a boozy doughnut with a fancy cocktail at its underground bar, Nocturne. Superfans can also sing a song and potentially earn a free doughnut. — Tierney Plumb" - Missy Frederick

Tucked away on a quiet corner in the northern part of Richmond, this small donut shop may not look like much from the outside, but it’s an absolute gem for anyone who loves creative, delicious donuts. While the parking situation is a little tight—just a few spots out front—I had no trouble getting in and out quickly, which was a pleasant surprise. Once inside, the first thing that caught my eye was the incredible variety. This shop doesn’t just stick to the basics—they offer a wide range of unique and inventive flavors that you don’t typically see at your average donut spot. We decided to try a few different ones, but two really stood out: the espresso donut and the Samoa donut. The espresso donut had a rich coffee flavor that was bold without being overpowering—perfect for a morning pick-me-up or to pair with an actual cup of coffee. The real star of the show, though, was the Samoa donut. If you’re a fan of the Girl Scout cookie, you’re in for a treat. This donut was everything we hoped it would be—sweet, slightly chewy with that toasted coconut, caramel, and chocolate combination that hits all the right notes. The staff was friendly and the vibe inside was cozy, making it a pleasant experience all around. If you find yourself in the northern Richmond area and want to try something local and full of flavor, this little donut shop is well worth the visit

One of the things I miss most are donuts when I went vegan. I literally search out vegan donut shops whenever I travel. This place is just off the i-95 in Richmond, VA, so a perfect stop on my drive from FL to VA to visit family. Altho this isn't a vegan place, most of the donuts here are vegan-friendly & they taste heavenly! Oh & pricing is great! $20 for a dozen. I know some places that charge extra for the word "Vegan". $4-5 per vegan donut is not uncommon.

Google
The donuts are delicious, fresh, and full of flavor! The fresh strawberry donut is particularly outstanding. The only discrepancy was with the sweet coconut donut, which had a chocolate base instead of the vanilla or white icing shown in the advertisement.

Google
I usually get the red velvet donut, but this time i decided to get other things. The caramel pretzel one wasn't bad! The caramel is good and complements the pretzel, i went near closing and unfortunately the pretzel was stale i think next time i'll probably try it again in the morning. Worker was nice! Blueberry donut was good, it reminds me of a blueberry muffin! Pretty sugary!

Google
Good solid donuts. They’re always fresh and their flavors are good. Love the lavender donut!

Google
Doughnuts were delicious, but pricey! Hard to fit a dozen doughnuts in a box! There was a line, so you might have to wait a little while, but definitely worth it! Has their own small parking lot! Will definitely go back!

Google
Service was so sweet and charming, Donuts and the different options are incredible! From experience, they won't last more than 2 days on the counter but you may have better luck if you refrigerate. We are big big fans of the glazed options for very berry, blue berry and old fashioned. Would have bought a whole tray if they did cherry chip!

Google
Some of the best donuts in Virginia. Nicely raised. Substantial. Not too sweet.

Yelp
Entirely Vegan donuts with a few clearly marked exceptions . Very hip coffee joint. This cute little corner location has easy parking and is convenient to 95 from Richmond. Staff are consistently friendly, enthusiastic to help, and lines go quick. Donut & coffee prices are perfect for a treat. Yes: Vegan friendly Yes: Kid friendly

Yelp
My coworker brought in some donuts for my birthday. Wow, what an amazing assortment! Everyone in the office jumped at the opportunity to have one. There were so many yummy options to chose from. It's definitely a once in a while treat, but worth checking out if you're in the mood for a tasty donut.

Yelp
Stopped by Sugar Shack donuts to try some donuts. Upon entering the space and interior are welcoming along with customer service. There are plethora of donuts to select from. I prefer cake. And went for the blueberry and old fashion. Both were fresh and soft. I definitely would come back to try more if in the area. Definitely a must try!

Yelp
Made a spontaneous stop for a doughnut this morning. Service was fast and courteous. Grabbed an amazing lavender doughnut and was in my way.

Yelp
We ordered about an hour before close on a Sunday evening. I called before placing my order to make sure all the donuts in our dozen were in stock. Nyla answered the phone on all three of my calls. She was patient, pleasant, and helpful. We had our donuts delivered so naturally the integrity of them were a bit compromised with lacking freshness. After putting them in the microwave for about five seconds it brought them back to life! The cake donuts were my favorite (blueberry and sour cream). The other donuts while fun with toppings they're the same recycle glaze donut with different toppings. No shade to the glazed donut because it is delicious just wanted to warn the masses that it was just the interchanging of toppings which is normal unless you get a cake donut. I have zero complaints, 10/10 experience!

Yelp
Solid choice and such a nice treat for our team that our boss brought in. Will definitely visit on my own accord sometime soon - the red velvet and the blueberry cake donuts are to die for!

Yelp
Friday 3/22/2024 The service was good and friendly. Tip: They give you a free house donut with yelp check in so don't miss out on the offer. We got an assorted dozen pack for $25.49 but the only donuts I had/tried were the Cronut, cinnamon roll, apple fritter, Oreo donut, glazed, and the fruity pebble donut. Overall, The donuts were alright but none of them really stood out to me besides maybe the Cronut (a croissant donut). One thing to note is that the donuts do taste a lot better when they are warmed up for a little.

Yelp
Donuts 100000/10! Unexpectedly passed this gem and decided to stop in and try. When we walked in we were quickly greeted with smiles and great energy! After discovering it was our first time trying, several of the favorites were recommended. We opted on a dozen, the cinnamon roll and the cronut (sp??) All I can say is that the cronut didn't stand a chance and didn't even make it in the pics lol, , it was that DELICIOUS! A MUST if your in the area!

Yelp
My absolute favorite donut shop! I first found them in Richmond years ago - then was ecstatic when I found the VB location, which has since sadly closed. I don't come to Richmond often but when I do I always try to stop by. Staff members are always kind! This location is smaller than one of the others I've been too but that's never been too much of an issue. My favorite donuts are the Samoa, classic sprinkles, & blueberry cake!
google avatar

Yelp
All the yeast donuts have a vegan base! That means like 90% of the donuts on display the day we went were vegan - yay! The only yeast donuts that weren't vegan had non-vegan candy toppings. I had the glazed bowtie, the marble, and the French toast (not all at once though, me no pig). They were all so, so good. All the donuts had clearly been made that day, because they tasted incredibly fresh). We drove almost 3 hours for a Richmond day trip and I stumbled upon Sugar Shack on Happy Cow while we were traveling around Richmond. It was, by far, the best thing I ate while in Richmond (which I find to be an excellent food city, overall). It was a little easy to miss, it's on the corner of Lombardy and Leigh, and a little bit back from the street. There were a few open parking spots when we went but I could see parking being a bit tricky on a weekend day (we went on a weekday).
google avatar

Kim L.

Yelp
Leaving Sugar Shack a fair 3 stars. The one item I will move mountains for is the glazed cro-nut (a donut with the texture of a croissant). I was an avid regular but the business has fallen off in recent years and quality is not the same. The kitchen staff will make or break a business. All the best!

Yelp
These donuts are incredible! Soft, doughy, the perfect amount of chewy. The flavors are unique, and there are so many options! My favorite is a classic strawberry donut with sprinkles, and they're always so satisfying from sugar shack. The employees working there are so personable and friendly. I would highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for a sweet treat for yourself or as a treat to bring to friends!

Yelp
Holy YUM! The apple fritter is huge & amazing! So many choice and so little stomach room! Highly recommend! Had a dark roast coffee as well - get compliment!

Yelp
Wow! Some of the best donuts I have ever had. With an ample selection that made my head spin (in a good way). My daughter and I had to resist wanting to sample all of them. We agreed on a half dozen and started the selection process. It was hard. Really hard. As they all looked so good. But we did it. And then proceeded to pound a couple of donuts each in the car. Amazing! My favorites (from this trip) was the Cronut and the Apple Fritter. I am afraid there are going to be more visits on my horizon. I hope I can contain myself!!!

Yelp
It is so hard to find vegan donuts and my trip to Sugar Shack was like finding paradise in Richmond. The shop is pretty small with a large case of donut flavors to choose from. About half the donuts available are vegan. I love how many creative flavors they have like the Samoa donut and Babe Ruth. They have your classic favorites with sprinkles as well. I got a nice assortment hitting my favorite flavor profile of sweet and salty with the salted caramel, Samoa, and Babe Ruth flavors. I was so impressed with the donut itself. All the donuts I tried were yeast donuts and no one would ever know they were vegan. The texture was spot on. The donuts were light, airy, and perfectly decadent. I highly recommend visiting this spot as they will certainly have a donut flavor that appeals to you and are so vegan friendly!

Yelp
Been too long since my last trip home, but per the usual, they always deliver. The red velvet cake donut remains my favorite, period, and their dirty chai latte remains the one that turned me on to the style of coffee and the one I judge all other dirty chais against.
google avatar

Angela L.

Yelp
Visiting Virginia we swung in to grab a few donuts and we were not disappointed. The red velvet cake was so moist and tasty. The butterfinger was not as sweet as I expected and that was a good thing. It was super well balanced on flavor. We loved all of them but those were my favorites. We also grabbed a dirty chai latte while we were there and it was perfect. The parking lot is a bit small and there isn't a place to sit inside so just be ready to grab and go.
google avatar

Ellen K.

Yelp
Donuts were excellent and mostly vegan to boot (with exception to the toppings that may be on them). They recommended the apple caramel donut to me this morning and it was definitely a great one! Also got a few other flavors and they were all well flavored and fresh. The honey lavender latte I got was not particularly a standout. Nonetheless, would definitely come by again if I had a donut itch the next time I'm in Richmond.

Yelp
Try the croissant doughnuts. Best of the offerings; although, the others were quite good as well. Just be aware: NO TOILETS NO SEATING Go to Monroe Park and sit on a bench.

Yelp
Sugar Shack Donuts - wow! So impressed. We live in Norfolk and were visiting Richmond for the day. We'd just finished dinner and were craving something sweet. Saw the reviews and had to try! FOOD: (4.8/5) We had the strawberry glaze, babe ruth, Butterfinger, espresso, s'mores, and french toast. What was really impressive was that they made their own strawberry icing - you can taste the strawberries!!! The babe ruth and the s'mores were also excellent! LOCATION: It's a shack with 6 parking spots located on a corner street. I didn't see any seating inside. SERVICE: We came on a Saturday at 5pm and there was only one person working. He looked backed up :/ But, he was friendly! Would I return? Absolutely would come back and grab that Strawberry Glaze donut!!!

Yelp
This place is what it says it is, a little shack on a corner. They only have a handful of parking spaces, so it can be hard (HELL) to get in/out- especially during peak hours. It's small and kinda dark inside and they have cool drinks as well as a coffee bar type situation. They have lots and lots of cool flavor and tons of vegan options. The first time I went, I tried the glazed cronut and it knocked my socks off. I used to work at a super busy bakery that specialized in cronuts and sugar shack's is even better!! I went 3 more times over the weekend (don't judge me!) and *every time* they were sold out of my beloved cronut. One of those times, I tried other stuff, a glazed twist and some kind of espresso cinnamon bun type business. Both good, but not enough to get me off the cronut crack. They should consider making more! I got up early one morning to make sure I got my hands on another cronut and that's when a very friendly person told me you can order online! Now that I know that, I have had to stop myself from ordering every morning before I gain another 15lbs. The service is ok, two people I've encountered were super super friendly :) and then another two barely even spoke to me.

Yelp
Whenever I'm in Richmond I always hit this place up! Definitely lives up to its name because these donuts are sweet. My personal favorite that I've always gotten is the Samoa donut which is just fantastic and remind me of the Girl Scout cookie. The maple bacon also never disappoints as well. Customer service was great, I didn't see what I was looking for so they kindly checked the back and got a fresh one. It's not s huge place or one you would sit down at but for a quick stop sweet treat this place is amazing!

Yelp
Best donuts, awesome staff! Cute vibe and convenient location with parking! Every donut we've tried is amazing! Love this place.

Yelp
We were in Richmond downtown and were looking for a quick place to have coffee and donut. We searched near us and decided to have coffee and donut from Sugar Shack. From the menu we ordered Spice Pie Latte and Donut. The order was quick and soon we got our coffee as well as donut. The spice pie latte was an amazing coffee with freshly roasted coffee and amazing fall taste. The donut was also good. A good coffee shop definite to have an amazing coffee and donut.

Yelp
AWESOME EXPERIENCE!! The staff was awesome, they described everything and were super helpful since it was our first time in. The food was hot, fresh, and the type of food you come back for over and over again! Overall one of the best experiences we've had in a LONG time where the food was AWESOME and the staff genuinely LOVED their jobs! Definitely give this place a try if you haven't already!

Cathy F.

Yelp
Great Advice- Get one donut to eat before you even leave parking lot. Get another for the next morning. Just had a reheated donut from the day before and it was 100% just as good as yesterday's super fresh and incredibly delicious parking lot choice. Just unbelievably good. Another big plus: The friendly and patient staff will lift your spirits.

Yelp
My husband and I have come here multiple times now! Every time the girls are so sweet and patient with us looking at all the yummy doughnuts in the case. His favorite is the maple and French toast. I'm a sucker for the Samoa's and strawberry glaze! Highly recommend for anyone wanting a sweet treat

Yelp
Open early which we appreciated while visiting Richmond for an AAU tournament. Donuts and coffee were great!

Yelp
I've started making a visit to Sugar Shack a must each time I'm in Richmond. Their selections are great and the staff is so welcoming. I love their cake doughnuts particularly the red velvet and old fashioned cake. I also love that they offer drink options as well.
google avatar

Cassie M.

Yelp
This is one of the first places I've visited in Richmond! It's a wonderful donut shop with lots of fun flavors! Super casual with a nice staff. I was laughing though because I ordered 2 gummy worm donuts & I guess they only had 1, & the girl ran to the back and brought one out. But I didn't realize until I got home that it had sour patch kids instead of gummy worms. I appreciate the effort lol.
google avatar

Danielle V.

Yelp
Do-nut miss this spot ! Came here while passing through town and got the maple bacon, blueberry cake and s'mores and they were so good! Nice and fluffy with delicious frosting! Limited parking, so plan accordingly. Small building. Nice staff.
google avatar

Graysen V.

Yelp
Sugar shack has been a long-time favorite in the area, known for great variety of flavors and price, but has recently shrunk the size of the donuts. They're still great in taste, just less cost effective than they once were. The staff is always very friendly and accommodating. More than a few times have donuts in our preorder have sold out or not matched up with the online offerings, but the silver lining has been in the kindness of the staff for making switches. I wouldn't suggest preorder since there's still a chance the flavors won't be available when you pick up and instead just go see what's currently in-store.

Yelp
We visited on a weekend to redeem an award our student received at school. Parking was overcrowded and the traffic was a bit crazy, but the building was easy to find. Once inside, there were only about three people ahead of us and one behind us, so I'm not sure why there were so many cars in the parking lot. We were not greeted when we entered and it took over 20 minutes before someone spoke to us and we were able to order. I'm usually a very patient person, but anyone with kids can understand why standing still for 20 minutes can be difficult. Especially without a hello or an update or anything. It seemed like there was only a single employee handling the donuts and the coffee orders. Unfortunately, this gave us a lot of time to stare at the inside of the store and realize how much it really needs some sprucing up. Once it was our turn, the lone employee was very friendly and helpful. We ordered our donuts and went on our way. The donuts were delicious, as always, some of the best in town. We really loved the s'mores donut. It was definitely our favorite. IMHO, they make GREAT donuts, so stop by if you're near, but if you have the opportunity, maybe try to visit another location. This one needs a little work to live up to its 4.5 star rating.

Yelp
On a scale of romances to documentaries, Sugar Shack Donuts & Coffee is the TikTok you keep on loop. My dog and I took a walk from Scott's Addition to Sugar Shack, and I was surprised by how long the line was (nearly out the door) on a weekday. The employee who handled the orders moved so quickly, and before I knew it, it was time to order. I highly recommend asking whoever is serving you what they recommend because I walked out with a French Toast doughnut, and it was the best doughnut out of the three (the other two I chose). Parking lot was tiny, and I'm glad I didn't have to navigate it.
google avatar

Opal D.

Yelp
Fantastic tasting and great looking doughnuts. I was a bit shocked to see the lowest preset tip button to be 20% since it's a doughnut shop and not a restaurant. The extent of service is putting doughnuts in a box...? I tipped what I would normally at a doughnut or coffee shop--not 20%.
google avatar

Meredith S.

Yelp
What makes these donuts so good? They are moist, creative and everybody was so friendly and happy in this shop. The customers and workers!! Honestly, these were the BEST donuts that I have had in years. Don't forget to also purchase a milk when you are in there. We had caramel, chocolate with sprinkles and plain glazed. We were in heaven with those three donuts for the rest of the day. NYC could take a lesson from Richmond with the quality and price point!! Highly recommend!!!!

Janie C.

Yelp
My sister recently moved to RVA and while visiting her we decided to check this place out; and we weren't disappointed! There was such a great variety of donuts to choose from, and as someone who looks for dairy free/vegan alternatives I was pleased by the options they had for vegan sensitivities! I opted for the vegan maple and my sister got the regular cinnamon sugar. Both of these donuts didn't make it out of the parking lot. Oh and my iced latte hits the spot as we are continuing exploring the city
google avatar

Yelp
On the list of best bakeries in Richmond! Cute shop with a wide variety of donuts! Too many good ones to pick from! Had to start out with chocolate butterfinger and wow I inhaled that thing so good. Also my friend got the cronut which is mix of croissant and donut ! So good but they only sell them Friday - Sunday. Also if they don't have the donuts in the display case they usually have them in the back! So just ask. Parking for free right next to shop :)

Yelp
Lol. We were in DC for a few days. I had wanted to try donuts while there. They were so overpriced. So on our drive home I put in donuts and sugar shack popped up. So glad we detoured. Very friendly and great tasting donuts! Very cool looking store....great reuse of an older building. Prices were exactly what they should have been as well.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is great! We get doughnuts most Sundays and love the red velvet doughnut. They also did an amazing job when I requested birthday doughnuts for my daughter. They were responsive and the doughnuts looked amazing.
google avatar

Roxanne K.

Yelp
I've been coming here for a little over a year now since it's right next to my apartment and their donuts are just the best. Everyone is super nice and everything is really affordable. Their seasonal stuff is so good. I tried their pumpkin spice donuts today and it was so amazing. I might just have to go back and get more. I cannot stress enough how kind the workers are they always greet me with a smile and talk about recommendations and new flavors. If y'all like, light and fluffy donuts, come here and you will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Grace K.

Yelp
I went for the coffee and it was solid. Better than the coffee we had at the brunch place we went to. The donuts looked good too but I was full from brunch, but will return to try them.

Kim Z.

Yelp
Order here all the time and they have the best donuts! In full transparency, I primarily like one kind of donut and judge all by this one kind- chocolate frosted. Pure, simple fluffy not sweet donut with chocolate frosting on top in the perfect ratio. Sugar Shack delivers perfection!!! We order all the time and my love of these donuts is the reason my pants don't button . We have tried several other flavors and haven't had a bad one yet, but the chocolate frosted frosted is my favorite by far. The family loves the maple bacon in 2nd place and jelly in 3rd. No matter what time of day, the donuts always taste fresh which is a big deal to me because the donuts at places like Dunkin Donuts taste stale by 10am.

rona g.

Yelp
Really good vegan donuts. They even have some that don't contain nuts. It's in an awkward lot but we don't mind. Where there's a will...

john b.

Yelp
All the donuts were excellent, but the apple fritter was totally awesome! Definitely going back on our next trip through Richmond.

Velvet G.

Yelp
It would be nice if the actual website is updated with operating hours. We drove two hours because my daughter only wanted your donuts for her birthday only for you guys to be closed.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
The donuts were delicious. They had plenty of creative vegan options. The employee we saw was super friendly and we ended up loving his recommendations. The atmosphere was pretty much what I would expect at a donut shop. The employee and the service is what made it stand out.
