"Delicious vegan Mexican food isn’t hard to come by in the Valley, with El Cocinero in Van Nuys and Sugar Taco under a 10-minute drive away. But the loaded fries at Sugar Taco are far superior and come with dairy-free queso, beans, salsa, chipotle crema, onion, crema, and a plant-based meat of choice." - Eater Staff

There is no other vegan Mexican restaurant that compares to how amazing the food here was! I've been telling everyone I talk to about it and figured leaving a review can help you make the decision to try it too! Here is what I would order again! EVERYTHING!!! Every single choice of protein had so much flavor, but if I had to choose only 1 the fish tacos (tofu) plus order a side of the elote (street corn) and put some of it in the taco (chef's kiss) it was perfect! I can't wait for my next visit! Hoping to save room for dessert!

Absolutely great tasting food! We had loaded fries and I could eat a bowl of these for every meal, every day of the week. Also, tacos and horchata were great. Finished our meal there with two fantastic Donuts. Instantly became our favorite restaurant in the neighborhood. We will be back! Also: dogs are allowed on the patio. They provide water bowls and have dog tacos. Our pup was very happy. Statt is friendly, but yes wait was slightly on the longer side: however we came during restaurant rush hour and were happy to wait a couple minutes longer for such amazing food.

Long time Vegan and Always searching for Amazing Vegan Food. I ordered the Gordo Nachos. Before leaving the restaurant I looked at my order. The Nachos appeared to Not have Queso. So I ask the young lady at the counter if they forgot the Queso. She told me that it should be underneath the meat and toppings. I get home, I begin to eat and I see no Queso. I look underneath all the topping and still nothing, Not even a taste of Queso. So now I’m very annoyed. The carne asada was ok, kinda dry and not very flavorful. I am extremely disappointed with Sugar Taco. Trying new places can be hit or miss and this was definitely a mistake. I would not recommend Sugar Taco. Oh and the churro donut was dry, definitely not worth $4.00 🙄 I really should have went to El Cocinero Restaurant on Sepulveda. El Concinero truly has the Best Vegan Mexican Food in the Valley. They are consistent with taste, flavor, and food presentation. Oh and they have Amazing Vegan Queso!

Great for the entire family! One of the few places that has vegan kids meals! Our kids ordered The quesadilla and the bean and cheese burrito. We also got the guacamole for them. The kids loved the food. We ordered the half order of nachos with the jackfruit carnitas and they were a hit too. They weren't too spicy for our kids which was great. My husband and I ordered the three taco plate and the burrito. We tried all three vegan meat options for the tacos and my favorite was the pollo. My husband's favorite was the carne asada. But we liked the carnitas on the nachos too. We also ordered the agua fresca hibiscus flavor. That was a hit all the way around. Not too sweet. And we finished our visit with the churro donuts which were amazing! They have a small play area for the kids which is nice. And the restrooms are artfully painted and clean. We loved how colorful the decor was and appreciated that there was so much seating for our large family of five. We visited for the first time on Mother's Day. We arrived a little bit before they opened at 12:00. And it was hard to find parking. Metered parking on the street was full. I read in another review that you could park behind the restaurant but we didn't see anything. So we went to the neighborhood across Ventura boulevard and found some parking on Noble Ave. There is also a public parking that is paid that I have a picture for as well. We will definitely be back!

This was my first visit and it was such a great experience! If I didn't go in knowing the food was vegan I could have completely been fooled. The food is so flavorful and it's also very visually appealing. My absolute favorite was the "pollo" taco made of soy bean and the "carnita" nachos made with jackfruit. The location itself was very clean, colorful and fun. Highly recommend it whether you are vegan or not.

Google
Sugar Taco, Sherman Oaks - very quickly becoming my go-to place close to home for some delicious & healthy vegan food! It's a fully vegan restaurant - - from the sour cream to the cheeses, it's all completely plant-based. The ambiance here has a cozy and joyful vibe; the restaurant is well-kept, too. The beautiful, colorful, elegant decor only adds to your wonderful experience here. There is indoor and outdoor seating - both comfy and cozy. Not to forget, I was very pleased each time with the friendly and efficient service of the lovely staff. I’m so glad I came across this place. Highly recommend it. Dishes ordered: tacos and the veggie bowl topped with guacamole.

I went to this location again with a large group this time. Everyone enjoyed their meal including the skeptics. Great all around as always. I also took doughnuts home to eat the next morning & they were still good. I finally found a Mexican place in So Cal I love & it's vegan! I started with one taco of each: pollo (soy), carnitas (jackfruit), carne asada, & al pastor (both seitan). Let's talk about the al pastor. I'm from Texas & I used to love eating real al pastor tacos. When I took a bite, I finally had a taste of back home! Texture was obviously different, but the flavor was all there. I'm not the biggest fan of jackfruit. I haven't tried it once & said let me have more. The carnitas taco definitely changed my mind. I could have more of that! I couldn't stop so I had half of a quesidilla with pollo. Vegan cheese hasn't won me over, so it wasn't anything spectacular; it was still good. Drinks were tasty, but not overly sweet or alcohol-y. It was so good all around & no animals were harmed. Uy, se me hace aqua la voca. The restaurant is so pretty. Plenty of backgrounds for instagrammable pics. The restroom was clean & pretty too. The employees were beyond nice. It was definitely a cherry on top. They also donate some of their profit. I will definitely be going back anytime I have a chance. This place has also been added to my list to take people when they visit LA. Keep it up, Sugar Taco!

Google
I cannot stop going to this place!! I usually go to the one on Melrose , but my first time here at the Sherman Oaks location. The quality and food is exactly the same if not better, and that’s a great thing. I got the fried chicken taco, the pollo and the carne asada.. yes they are all vegan and plant based. But they are seasoned to perfection and that’s literally what each taco taste like. The pollo is made from chickpeas I believe and the carne asada is seitan (correct me if I’m wrong!) The fried chicken taco is there newest addition and it’s absolutely DELICIOUS!! Like I said I can’t get enough of this place

Yelp
Really enjoy Sugar Taco esp for being vegan! I got the bowl this time but have gotten the burrito in the past and it was delicious. With the right flavors, would anyone know it's vegan? Maybe not, minus the texture. I got the Bowl with Carne Asada (seitan). I will say the marination was a TAD sweet for me but when mixing it in the bowl, it dissipated more and was less obvious. It's not a huge portion but for the size, I believe it makes sense. Next time, I will have to try their pescado protein and their churro donut. At certain times of the day, parking can be quite difficult. It's quite populated on Ventura Blvd at lunch/dinner time, as you can imagine. I suggest parking in the residential if you can, but even that gets hard.

Yelp
It's taco time at sugar taco and they have quite the variety to choose from. Street style tacos you can have a la carte or as a combo with rice and beans. Just note, this place is strictly vegan so don't think you'll be eating actual carnitas, it's actually marinated jackfruit (I will say its on the sweeter side for my liking). My favorite is the pollo made from soybeans, the flavor and texture are spot on and they don't overload you on the salsa that's added onto it. The street corn they have is one of my favorite sides as well as the horchata drink. As you're on Ventura Blvd this place has bright orange and pink walls. It's street meter parking only but you can usually find parking in the neighborhoods that'll lead you into a short walk. They have indoor seating as well as a small patio outside. You place your order up front and they'll bring the food to you when it's ready. Staff is always friendly and the food is always delicious!

Maite M.

Yelp
Still love Sugar Taco! My coworkers and I love meeting up here after work and enjoying dinner together. The staff is super kind and accommodating and it's really easy to order together or individually using the QR code. The food is always a hit with both vegans and non-vegans. Also I love that they have both indoor and outdoor seating. They play great music, too!

Yelp
This restaurant is blowing my mind!! VEGAN Mexican food!! So unique and tasty no doubt. Today we visited the Sherman Oaks location, descent hispanic decorations outside and the indoor dining area, very colorful and welcoming. Waitress are friendly and attentive for the experience, there are so many good stuffs on the menu and it took me a while to get my orders done.  3 Taco Plate: * Pollo (soybean) * Carnitas (jackfruit) * Carne Asada (seiyan) Nachos (half order): * Tortilla chips, plant protein of your choice, queso, black beans, pico de gallo salsa.  Quesadilla (half order): * Flour tortilla, house made nut-free cheese, option to add plant based protein Aguas frescas: * Horchata * Watermelon juice Still can't believe all these deliciousness are plant-based, they taste so flavorful, fresh, and authentic.

Yelp
Really loved the food at Sugar Taco. They have so mami choices. I would suggest getting the 3-taco entree, and picking different ingredients for each of the 3 tacos. This way, you can get a sampling of many of the items they offer here. They have outdoor and indoor seating. They even have an area for kids to play in. The decor is pretty, and has Mexican elements on the walls. Very pink. The staff is very nice and polite and helpful. They do go out of their way to make sure you're comfortable and babe everything. They're also cognizant of wait times. My order took them a bit longer than they had anticipated, and so they offered me a free drink as a peace offering. I can't wait to go back here and try more things.

Stella L.

Yelp
Tried this place over the weekend. Love that it's a vegan place, not very common for tacos. Got the 3 taco plate as recommended by the girl at the counter (carne asada, potato and fish). Customer service was friendly and I thought prices were reasonable. Can't wait to try the burritos and nachos next time. Oh and the horchata!

Ari D.

Yelp
I watched "You Are What You Eat" recently on Netflix and this totally changed my whole outlook on the over consumption of meat, in addition to the health benefits of a plant based diet. As a result, because I am leaning now more towards a plant based diet I find myself coming to Sugar Taco more. I have only been here twice, and each time I have ordered something with carne asada. I highly recommend their carne asada bowl -- which is perfect amount for lunch and comes with rice, beans, pico de gallo and chunks of flavored seitan meat. They garnish the bowl with a few chips which is a perfect touch. I also appreciate how they provide your own pitcher of water!! The interior decor of Sugar Taco has a "Dia de los muertos " type of vibe with all the bright vivid colors, skulls, flowers, etc... The restroom appeared abandoned last time I was there and the toilet definitely needed attention for many different reasons! But I will def return in near future to try other vegan options!

Yelp
I really love this place and all they offer! First off, the decor and colors are super cute. It gives a very fun and inviting feel to the place that I love. Theres a lot of seating which is great. They're also dog friendly! The menu is exactly what you would expect - from tacos, to burritos, to fries and margaritas there's something for everyone. I'm a very very picky eater and this is my FAVORITE place for Mexican food. I personally DIE for their quesadilla. This is the ONLY vegan spot I get a quesadilla at and what makes them stand out is their cheese (made in house, duh). It melts, it's stretchy and it's delicious (something that can't be said for all vegan cheeses)! Every time I've been I've tried something different but I always get the quesadilla. I love the nachos too but you can't go wrong really. My husband isn't vegan and he loved it. That says A LOT. I can always get him to come here! While parking can be difficult, if we're able to find a spot we dine here pretty often. I love that Sugar Taco was founded by the coolest and most inspiring women. If you're looking for good Mexican food (notice I didn't say vegan, because who cares?!) this is the place to go. I also noticed some customers left 1/5 star reviews for random things (like not having soap in the bathroom....), so just ignore those reviews. TRY THIS PLACE!!! Shop small - these guys are making big changes with their food. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
I'm so glad this location closed. I've been here twice and it was both an awful experience. The staff was extremely rude both times as well. The nachos had absolutely no cheese and I was told it would be underneath the chips...(who does that anyways??) but as I kept digging..no cheese. I asked for a big bowl so I can flip the nachos over so I could get to the cheese (I was met with annoyance). I saw no cheese at all, so I asked for a side of the nacho cheese and that made the waitress question us about how we eat our nachos and was suggesting that we weren't eating it properly. Again...there just wasn't any cheese in the nachos and it turned into all of that. I've been to Latina owned vegan Mexican restaurants that are far more superior than Sugar Taco. Please support Latina vegans who can actually replicate proper Mexican food!

Yelp
If you are a vegan or vegetarian then this is the best place for Mexican in the valley. I am neither but sometimes prefer to axe the meat/poultry option. The inside is festive with lots of seating. They have a very sunny patio out front if you like to people watch...that would be me:) The food is tasty and serving sizes are decent. Prices: moderate - a black bean/rice burrito with Pico de Gallo and guacamole runs around $13. It does not come with any sides. Parking is limited to metered street parking and some side street parking. *READ THE SIGNS You order at the register and they bring to your table.

Yelp
This is getting 5 stars mostly because of the donuts. The rest of the food is great, don't get me wrong. But the first time I tried the churro donut I thought, "This is one of the best donuts I've ever had!" And I said as much to friends when I ordered it to our house once. It was not as good. Neither was the food! But I just went again and had their Halloween donut and again was struck by its magnificence. Truly amazing. (The addition of the glaze was a 10/10 idea somebody needs a raise. Really scratches that Krispy Kreme itch.) I think it's just one of those things - much better at the restaurant than ordered to-go. Don't get the ghost pepper taco unless you hate yourself (or are a fan of burning-lead-ball-in-stomach sensations). The f*ck me up guac is really spicy, too. Bring ur doggo - they will be confused but delighted by getting to eat with the humans. (FYI the fish is a bit tofu-y, not v dense or fishy.)

Chantal B.

Yelp
Sugar Taco was really good. I enjoyed and it was filling. I requested no beans and they were able to sub it out for veggies which was really good. I ordered the 3 tacos plate, on their site, and I chose carne asada, "fish" tacos and pollo taco. I'm not sure if they really gave me the pollo taco because it was giving more like Al pastor. The "fish" tacos were phenomenal. The carne Asada were my second favorite and it was good. And the pollo taco were a little too salty. The rice was perfect and the slaw was yummy. The place is very vibrant and the cashier was really kind. She answered my questions about the dessert. My food was ready when I got there. There's no parking lot but I was blessed with parking at the street meters This was definitely a concept and I was not disappointed. The price was good for what I received. They have an outdoor seating area and people were sitting and enjoying.

Yelp
Plant based tacos are not hard to find in Los Angeles. What makes Sugar Taco any different? Why choose to spend your money here? It's hard to explain but you just gotta experience it for yourself. The food is exciting, modern but classic. Order Sugar Taco once and you'll be back! Vegan food that doesn't try to be "healthy" it's just simply delicious and clean. Do not skip the nachos. The jackfruit carnitas are such a hit. Who is making the queso here??? High five to them!! The people in the kitchen know their stuff and the staff in the front are always super friendly. We get takeout most often from this location. I love that their packaging is minimal, and completely biodegradable or compostable. The reusable large drink jars are so useful too! Very thoughtful.

Yelp
Came here on a Tuesday night around 7 pm to celebrate my vegetarian friend's birthday! (I still like to eat veg food occasionally but am not veg myself). There was some street parking around, on Ventura and the streets around (on Ventura it was free past 6 but on the side streets, it was free past 8. My friend got a 63$ parking ticket for not paying for the last hour of parking so beware!) The cashier was very friendly and I asked her what the most popular item was. She recommended the 3 taco plate. I ended up ordering the 3 taco plate with one of each protein (carnitas, pollo, and asada) with an additional fish taco. Then I ordered a large horchata. The large horchata comes in a large glass cup that you can bring back again and again and only be charged a small! It was delicious, sweet, and cinnamony. The tacos themselves had amazing flavor! Some of the texture was a bit off for me but it didn't matter too much because it tasted good. My favorite I think were the carnitas and asada. The fish was probably my least favorite because you could pretty much tell it was just a seasoned block of tofu (seasonings were still good and I finished it but the texture was lacking). The carnitas are actually made of jackfruit, pollo made of soybean, carne asada made of seitan, and fish made of tofu. We sat inside, the inside is very cute, colorful, and whimsical. There's also a smal play area for kids. Overall a great experience! The nachos looked super good too. Would definitely be back for more horchata refills and to bring any veg friends!

Mandie R.

Yelp
Love this spot. Incredible vegan joint with variety of protein options. Horchata is a must. If you order the large size it comes in a custom jar you can bring back for a discount on your next order. Portions are good size. Outdoor seating is super pleasant and cute. Deffo recommend even if you're not vegan.

Stacee S.

Yelp
One of my all-time favorite places! And I'm not even 100% vegan haha. Everything I've had is amazing--tacos, nachos, margaritas, etc. The asada is my favorite, but the pollo and pescado are great too. Super cute aesthetic! 10/10 recommend!

Rachael M.

Yelp
I'm on a real vegan Mexican food kick! After El Cocinero, I really wanted to try out Sugar Taco as well, and I'm glad I did! I'm not totally opposed to meat-based protein, but I have been gravitating more toward vegetarian and vegan options as of late, and let me tell you - these plant-based tacos are bomb! Even if you still like meat! I was hanging out with a friend in Studio City when we got hungry and decided to order from Sugar Taco via Yelp. My friend ordered the 'Not Yo' Nachos', we ordered the 3 "fish" tacos to share (tofu-based), and I ordered an assortment of 3 tacos including: veggie, carnitas, & al pastor-style tacos. We also shared a large horchata. My friend enjoyed her nachos, and while we both enjoyed the fish tacos, we both felt it lacked seasoning. The toppings seemed to make up for that a bit, but still felt the tofu needed some salt, pepper, and maybe some chipotle seasoning? I really enjoyed all my other tacos, which for the most part seemed to be jackfruit-based and were excellently seasoned. The horchata was pretty tasty also, and I now have another jar for propagating plants in, and/or keeping pressed juice! They definitely earned back any point I might have docked for the slightly under-seasoned tofu, with their recyclable (and no single-use plastics), and compostable packaging and utensils! Definitely worth checking out!

Yelp
As I walked up to the venue it was very beautiful and colorful which immediately caught my eye. There is a patio for you to sit outside and enjoy the California breeze in the sun and get some fresh air and they also have it available for you to have your pets with you so bring your fur babies! I was very captivated by the aroma that I smelled when walking into the location the staff was very friendly and immediately greeted me with smiles asking me if I had any questions as this was my first time. I saw the churro donuts and the pumpkin spice glaze donuts, very fresh and 100% vegan. Agua Fresca's: limited time for this month is the Pumpkin spice horchata the regular Horchata and it was Hibiscus, I believe. All their Horchata is made with rice and oat milk which is 100% vegan, which I need because I am lactose intolerant but that's a whole other story. The food was amazing I had the three taco plate: Carne Asada, Fish and Pollo with black beans were delicious the rice was cooked perfectly. I also enjoyed a churro donut and I enjoyed greatly the pumpkin spice Horchata. It's only there for a limited time so make sure you get it. On my way out I decided to get a potato cheese taco. I am not vegan but I will definitely be back here to enjoy some food with some of my vegan friends and I am definitely not missing the meat at this location.

Thea S.

Yelp
The food is ample and pretty good. The location is convenient, but parking is street only. The service is nice and helpful. Order at the counter and they bring your food to your table. Ambiance is a little lacking in warmth and absorption of noice. Spacious and echoing. Perhaps restaurants could try the acoustics on people over 40 before opening. They wont, but should!

Paula F.

Yelp
It's an addiction! Can't get enough of this place. Another dinner visit, another great meal. This is hands down my favorite place for a vegan burrito. The bowls are outstanding, too. Prices are great. Parking has been easy. Customer service is always good. See my previous reviews for a more detailed description. Nothing has changed. It's consistently amazing!

Debbie K.

Yelp
We don't live in the area but visited this restaurant based on a friend's recommendation. We discover that the food is really good. The place is decorated nicely too. I had to the Tres Tacos Plate with rice and beans: 'fish' taco, 'chicken' taco, and Asada taco. The protein is all plant based and was really good. Hubby had a vegan burrito with jackfruit carnitas. Yummy! We ordered agua fresca that is served in jars we can take home with us. The service was friendly and helpful. We heard from a friend that the business will open one in Long Beach. It will be closer to us. We are looking forward to that location.

Elisa H.

Yelp
What a find! Taco Tuesday found us at this little restaurant with the most delicious food and the kindest folks working behind the counter and serving. We placed our order at the counter and found a table as we waited for our meal. Servers brought our food to our table along with cold water. Couldn't resist the hibiscus lemonade, was so refreshing! There were four of us in our party so we ordered a bunch of dishes. Everything was absolutely amazing! The fries, quesadillas, tacos...all of it, we shared! Can't wait to return when we are in the are again. Parking on the street was easy as we were there at an off hour. Check this place out, you'll be glad you did!!!

Shai R.

Yelp
This is one of the best vegan taco restaurants I've tried so far. Everything is fresh and the perfect portion size. This is my second time at this restaurant. The first time was for a yelp event. This time I decided to try it on my own. I ordered the 3 taco plate (2 jackfruit tacos and 1 seitan taco) with rice and beans. I also ordered a Togo glass of watermelon margarita (you get to keep the container) and a tasty churro donut. This meal was the perfect mid-day lunch/dinner. I was full after 2 tacos but I went ahead and finished my plate lol. I didn't want to waste any food. I think I like the seitan taco the best. They also had a soy option but I try to stay far away from soy. The watermelon margarita was so refreshing. It was very tasty and just the right amount of alcohol lol. I love the glass jar! That was the reason I ordered the Togo margarita. I'm sure I will use it for other drinks lol. The churro donut was absolutely delicious! I will say it's a little dense so be sure to have something to drink with it. I wish I would've gotten one to go. I will definitely be visiting this location again. I love that the location of this one. I sat outside and had no issues with noise. The staff were also helpful.

Jasmine M.

Yelp
First time here. This place is Vegan and heaven for me! We tried the Carne Asada Loaded Fries (you can pick from Pollo-Soy Bean, Carnitas-jack fruit or Carne Asada-Seitan) Loaded fries are excellent! So meaty flavored and I added guacamole, why not? Definitely a Mexican Vibe and I would really enjoy sitting outside enjoying a margarita or sangria. TIP: Parking in back behind building or metered street parking. All gender bathrooms. Try the churro donut.. very popular. Reasonable prices most food items are under $10. Donut is $4. Alcoholic beverages are $8-$11

Rachel S.

Yelp
I tried this place during a Yelp elite event and really liked this place. I am normally a meat eater but my best friend and her family were coming over to my house for lunch and they are veggie/vegan. Wanted to order the food before they got there but it was closed until 12pm. Tried calling after 12pm and got an automated message saying to order online. The Sherman oaks site said it was closed until 2pm! Wtf? The Melrose location was opened at 12pm. I tried the text number they provided but didn't get a response until we already drove there to order, telling me that they can't take phone orders because of cc issues. My hubby drove there and placed our order - got the chicken birra plate, 3 tacos combo, seitan protein bowl, seitan burrito and chips and guacamole. We wanted the churro donuts but they ran out, so we got the Easter donuts. Overall food was delicious - chicken birra is good, definitely better with real chicken but I had a bite of my husband's "fish" tacos and they were delicious! Chips and guacamole was yummy as were the vegan donuts! Overall a good lunch experience but they need to either take phone orders or fix their site! Why can't you order food online? 2pm is a strange time to open up the ordering!

Catherine D.

Yelp
Got the 3 Taco Plate and it was so GAS!!! Service excellent taste was flavorful and pumpkin spice horchata was sublime

Yelp
Living in L.A. we are fortunate to have a variety of Vegetarian & Vegan eateries to choose from. One such place is Sugar Taco. Sugar Taco's motto is "Saving The World One Taco At A Time." They source their produce from local organic farmers. Their menu is 100% vegan. Straws, utensils, & to-go containers are biodegradable. For every meal purchased from the kids menu, a meal is donated to Food For Life Global to help feed hungry children around the world, and 100% of proceeds from their dog menu goes to a different animal charity each month. Gabby greeted me when I walked in. She was very sweet with a warm personality. She enthusiastically explained the menu items to me. I eventually decided on 3 vegan tacos: Pollo (soybeans), Carne Asada (Seitan), & Pescado (tofu), a Hibiscus Aguas Frescas (Lemonade & Horchata were also available) and a Churro Donut. I asked for a side of the Just F*CK Me Up Guac and decided to also get a Spicy Margarita. She told me it would be ready in about 10 minutes, so I took the opportunity to check out the lovely décor of the place while I waited. (The indoor dining room has a play area for kids and there is also a cute outdoor patio.) When my order was ready, she brought it over to me. I noticed a little note on the bag that said: "Nikki Thank You!!" with a smiley face and a heart. It was so nice. It made me smile. I was very impressed with the tacos, which came with a side of rice & black beans and were topped with salsa, cilantro, and chopped onions. The tacos had such a good flavor. Each one was a bit different, and I liked how each was seasoned. The Pescado was coated in a light batter, much like a traditional fish taco. The Carne Asada & Pollo looked like real meat. The Just F*CK Me Up Guac was da bomb! The Churro donut was amazing! It was fluffy inside with a nice cinnamon sugar crust on the outside. I wish I had bought more. I've never had Aguas Frescas and this was a nice first experience. It was refreshing and not too sweet. Since I brought it home, I added some tequila and turned it into a Hibiscus Margarita (because that is what Ms. Tina M would do.) The Spicy Margarita was good, and the spice level was just right. I definitely recommend Sugar Taco even if you are not vegan. The customer service was great, the décor was beautiful, the food was phenomenal, and the drinks were tasty. Tip: Metered street parking. There is also another location on Melrose.

Jo S.

Yelp
I discovered Sugar Taco because of an Yelp Elite perk. It is a casual restaurant located on Ventura Blvd in Sherman Oaks, specialized in Vegan Mexican food. They have also a location on Melrose. I am not vegan, but I am very opened mind, want to eat health-ish and love tacos. They also have a good rewards program that enticied me to come back, alongside with a nice patio where you can enjoy a nice meal. I also love their funky decor and bright, vivid colors,  nice Mexican touches and details like the use of tile and the pots hanging on the walls like you see beyond south of the border. Parking -they have a few spots behind the restaurant,  otherwise street parking. It's the type of place where you order, pay (no cash, I wish they'd use it) and get a number.  They bring the food to your table alongside a bottle of water and glasses. Nice touch! The food arrives fast! I got again the plate of 3 tacos, it comes with black beans and rice. I chose: Pollo, asada, carnitas. Vegan versions. The tacos are good, loved the corn tortilla, very authentic. Spicy, but not too much, flavorful, the asada is a fave. Great option for meatless tacos that have flavor and spiciness. I also got their Horchata again, thick, tasty, with lots of cinnamon and their churro donut be cause we like it that much. I would stop by to get that donut when in the area, it's that good and unique. We shared a half portion of nachos with carne asada. Nachos are good, full of beans, salsa and cheese. My only compaint - the cheese is kinda thin and runny. Nice option for vegans and for open minded foodies who want to try a new take on Mexican food. I love street tacos, but I'd like to try their other dishes and drinks. Next time!

Yelp
Sugar Taco is ALWAYS a good time. One of my friends is vegan, so Sugar Taco is a perfect choice. I got their al pastor taco and jackfruit taco and both were DELICIOUS. I think I liked the al pastor taco just slightly more. We also got a half plate of nachos to share, which was the perfect amount for 3 people! The nacho topping we got was carnitas - which was made of seitan and I personally think it tastes really good. My friend got the half quesadilla and it looked very good too. The half sizes are still a really big portion!

Yelp
I am so happy during this visit I tried out the churro doughnut. Seriously, it is so freaking delicious. I was surprised when I took my first bite and it was soft and moist. A MUST HERE! Another of my favorite during this visit was the fish taco!! Holy moly, it is packed with flavor. It is not part of their regular protein menu but is so worth it.

Yelp
Amazing vegan Mexican food!! Every thing I ate was great. I feel like you can't go wrong with anything you order--from the drinks to the appetizers to the mains to the desserts. The churro donuts are insanely good.

Yelp
This place is so yum! Everything I've ever gotten here has been a hit. I appreciate great vegan food not too far from home. Everyone I bring here loves it too. I recommend especially the pescado tacos! So delish. They have plenty of seating, bring out the food fast, and it's a cute little spot.

Yelp
My cousin really wanted to come to this place and we decided to stop here for lunch. This is a Vegan Mexican place and so that was a plus. We ordered burrito with vegan pollo. Added guac to this. It was flavorful and we enjoyed it. The loaded fries with carne asada was also yummy. I was not a big fan of carnitas quesadilla and veggie nachos. The churro donut was good and the horchata was really good. Overall, it was good food. My cousin got to meet the owner of this place so she was very excited! Everyone was friendly and the place is very cutely decorated.

Yelp
Had four different tacos which were very well-balanced, very flavorful. All of the tacos hadhad nice presentation. The passion fruit Agua Fresca was delicious and the service was friendly and professional. This was my first time eating vegan Mexican food and let me say I am a taco connoisseur. These vegan tacos were better than a lot of the non vegan tacos I've had in the past few years not to mention healthy. Highly recommend this place

Yelp
On a cold and chilly day, the restaurant was warm and welcoming. I ordered horchata with a carnitas taco, a carne asada taco, black beans and rice. The horchata was rich, creamy and just the right amount of sweet. I wasn't the biggest fan of the texture or flavor of the jackfruit for the carnitas taco but the carne asada taco made with seitan was very good and had a smoky, well marinated texture and flavor. I loved the black beans and the rice was also very good. The combo came with a churro donut I ate so fast I couldn't get a picture!! All around, a great meal and a good choice for local vegan cuisine.

Yelp
Looking for a delicious vegan restaurant? Look no further than Sugar Taco! They've got all your favorite items like tacos, burritos, and quesadillas, but with a vegan twist. Even meat eaters will be satisfied with these delicious options. As self proclaimed tree huggers, they source their produce from local organic farmers. Who doesn't love a business that supports other locals? We definitely recommend getting the three taco place with several different proteins to try. Oh, and the donuts are to die for! Happy eating Yelpers!

Yelp
First time at Sugar Taco and the food was absolutely delicious! Tried the 3 taco meal I chose the chicken, carnitas, and carne asada they were all soo incredibly good I forgot they were vegan. The horchata was great too. Definitely coming back again 10/10

Yelp
Sugar Taco is a cute, themed vegan restaurant with a family owned feel and AMAZING food! When we walked in Ashley asked us if it was our first time there. She was incredibly helpful, explaining what the options are, what her favorites are, and what the popular dishes are. We finally settled on the fish tacos, the crispy potato taco special, and the loaded fries. My favorite was the fish taco by far! Everything was delicious though. My boyfriend had a ton of questions and even got to talk to the chef, Cesar, who you could tell was happy to be there. I was so impressed with the seasoning of everything! It was absolutely extraordinary. The ambience is unique and calming. It's a place that makes you just want to hang out. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
I randomly stumbled upon this restaurant on social media initially not realizing it was plant based Mexican. But once I realized, I said to myself I would give them a try next time I was in LA. So, during my LA trip in August, I made it happen. The restaurant has a cool vibe, friendly staff and tons of menu options. Orders are placed at the counter and brought to your table inside or outside once it's ready. Let me just say this did not skimp on the servings. The portions are huge and filling. And so flavorful. This is by far the best Mexican vegan restaurant I've encountered. You will leave satisfied and full. I definitely recommend giving them a try.

Yelp
FOOD IS AMAZING AND KELLY & ASHLEY ARE AMAZING!!!!!! I love this place!!! The food is always good, I love the vibe. They have amazing drinks and honestly it's just really good vegan food --which even though there have been great improvements--good vegan is still sometimes hard to find. The best thing about this location is two of the front ladies, Ashley and Kelly. They're really nice and accommodating. I can be kind of picky when I order food; they never make me feel bad about it, they're always just really sweet and gracious and part of the reason why I always come here. I hope they know how amazing they are and that they're invaluable. A++++ service and equally good food :) :) :). Ps- Make sure to order some crema, a.k.a. sour cream on the side for whatever dish you get, you won't regret it it's the absolute best!

Yelp
Definitely enjoyed the tacos. The salsas were good too. Loved my reusable drink glass, I still use it all the time!

Yelp
I have never had vegan Mexican food, but I was excited to try it for the first time. I mean who doesn't want to eat healthy without eating just salad greens? So here we go... I tried the nachos with "carne asada". I got the gordo size since I was sharing with my bestie. The carne asada was suggested when we were ordering since we couldn't decide on the protein. When the plate came it was enormous and great for sharing. But I don't know if it was me, but the taste was off. The carne asada taste burned and we hardly ate it because it literally left a bad taste in our mouths. If you look closely at the picture I posted, the carne asada is very dark. Also, the black beans were really salty. I really wanted to like this place. Maybe I came on an off day. The staff was so nice and sweet. Parking sucks on Ventura Blvd, but I got lucky with a spot right in front. Yes, watch out for the meters! I will have to come back and try something else. I want to give this place another chance. Hopefully my experience is a better one.

Yelp
Who knew vegan tacos could taste just as good as regular tacos?! Sugar Taco is an all vegan restaurant serving tacos, burritos, nachos, quesadillas, and more! I tried their new menu item, the daring fried chicken tacos. At first glance and bite, you would never guess that these were vegan! It's made from soy beans, but they really nail the texture and taste to mimic chicken. With vegan food, you also don't have to worry about whether or not something has dairy (this was a major plus for me). They have a variety of drinks as well - I tried their mango lemonade and horchata. The mango lemonade was a little too tart for my liking. If you're looking for something sweet, definitely go for the horchata. They make this with oat milk, and I loved how sweet and creamy it was! If you've never tried vegan tacos, I highly recommend Sugar Taco for your first experience. I'm already looking forward to my next visit to try their other food items and drinks!

Yelp
Was in the area and decided to eat some tacos. I happened to stumble upon Sugar Taco and was intrigued by their plant based menu items. Their menu had a delicious variety of tacos, plates, burritos and really cool drinks. I wasn't in a drinking mood, but it was tempting! We decided to try the special of the day, which was The Daring Fried Chicken Taco. The interior was really cute too, love all the colors and the Lotteria cards for your assigned table numbers. The food came out fairly quick, and I was excited to try the Daring Fried Chicken. It was very tasty, and even fooled my husband who normally hates the idea of vegetarian food and plant based items. It has a nice crispy texture and I liked that it wasn't heavily breaded. I ate all of my tacos and was actually craving more. Great plant based tacos and would highly recommend to vegetarians and carnivores alike!

Yelp
I've been here a few times now. They have amazing vegan food. Their margaritas are good too. They have amazing vegan donuts for deserts. Great service as well.

Yelp
First time having vegan tacos and it's soooooo tasty! Got the "3 Taco plate" of Daring Fried Chicken that was super tasty, comes with black beans and Mexican rice. The side of fresh fried chips & salsa rounded up our meal nicely. And love the agua frescas: my black horchata since Halloween. And hubs got the watermelon that was refreshing. 'course I had to get some hot sauce to top off my spicy jalapeño tacos. The covered patio in the back was comfortable, and bonus points for the heaters as evenings get rather cool now. Got here around 8pm and lucked out finding side streets 2-hour parking. Definitely recommend Sugar Taco as a great vegan option.

Yelp
I love sugar taco rolled up to Sherman Oaks location and it's CLOSED PERMANENTLY LIKE WTF I was just here last week I'm hurt. I actually need a grieving moment like was there a notice? Im just so heartbroken

Yelp
Always good food at Sugar taco but I had to come back to try the ghost taco and god damn that taco is on fire. Took one bite and my mouth was on fire. I don't know if anyone has tried it but if anyone has and finishes the whole taco give you props. I couldn't take a second bite. Beware all I can say on the ghost taco. You do sign a waiver when you order and they do warn you that it is really spicy. Overall load this taco spot always good quickly flavorful food.

Yelp
Absolutely loved Sugar Taco! Came for the first time about 3 weeks ago with a fellow vegan friend from out of town. The atmosphere is so fun, very colorful decor just puts you in a good mood. There is some outside seating in the front and plenty inside. We ordered the 3 taco plate to try out a variety of fillings (carne asada, fish, and pollo) and followed up with nachos with pollo and guac. I found the pollo to be the spiciest of the bunch (I am a baby when it comes to spicy food). The fish and carne asada were fantastic! The rice and beans on the side of the taco plate were nothing special so I would opt for standalone tacos next time. We also ordered agua frescas, mango and hibiscus. I really liked the mango. I'm very much looking forward to coming back!
