This one is a short walk from any hotel in the Downtown St. Louis area, near the Convention Center. When I arrived, I realized the hours on the door said 11am 'til SOLD OUT. It was 7:00-was I cutting it close??? The line in front of me was short, but the tables were moderately filled and it looked like they had plenty of food. Then, when the party ahead of me went up to order, the guy behind the counter told one of them to pull the tray paper sign with "Burnt Ends Nachos" on it off the wall. They were definitely starting to run out!
By the time I ordered my meal and found a community table to sit at, the line was twice as long as it had been when I got there. I must have had impeccable timing. They have signs telling you that you cannot find a place to sit until your entire party has ordered and paid for their food, and let me tell you my friends, they stand on business about that. I saw one customer try to shirk that requirement only to have the busser tell her she couldn't sit yet and pointed to the sign. I appreciate that, if they have a rule like that, they stick to it.
I ordered a Combo Plate with brisket and pulled pork, and for my sides asked for French fries and the creamy grits, which were a premium side and had an extra $1 charge. There are table sauces on each table, so I tried each of them with both meats and found them to be remarkably similar or just okay. Overall, I kept alternating between the Coffee Barbecue, because it was the one with the most unique flavor, and the Texas Hot, because it was the only one that really had kick to me. The others were okay, but nothing to write home about. The meat was good, relatively fatty, and the sides were decent, though I liked the grits more than the fries. The meal also came with a small drink, of which they served a local soda brand. I've seen it in other places downtown as well.
By the time I was ready to leave, they were poppin', and parties were sharing long tables with each other. It was loud, but boisterous. The busser did a great job of clearing plates quickly so everyone who wanted to sit, could. It was a pleasant and quick experience for someone visiting for a conference.
