The 16 Best Restaurants in Hilo, Hawai‘i | Eater

"Suisan has been a part of Hawai‘i’s historic fishing community for more than 114 years. The operation’s roots date back to 1907 when Torazuki Hayashi and Hitaro Egawa formed the cooperative Sui San Kabushiki Kaisha. Like the generations of residents in Hawai‘i, the market is a survivor; it was destroyed twice by tsunamis, in 1946 and 1960, weathered the Great Depression, and was seized by the military in World War II, yet Suisan remains a huge retailer for fish across Hawai‘i Island. Stop by the well-worn bayside building for a slice of history and about a dozen options of incredibly fresh poke, including staples like Sesame Shoyu and Spicy ‘Ahi, as well as cooked items like butter garlic prawns and lomi salmon. Check out the market’s Instagram page for fresh picks of the day." - Maya-Lin Green

Wow, hands down the best poke I had on the Big Island! From the moment I walked in, you can tell everything is ultra-fresh. Each bite literally melts in your mouth, tender, perfectly seasoned cubes of fish that taste like they were caught that morning. The pieces are juuust the right size (no giant chunks or sad little bits), so you get an ideal balance of fish and seasoning every time. The staff are absolute sweethearts, zero pressure, plenty of friendly smiles, and they even let me sample every flavor before I decided. I would recommend Suisan to anyone visiting Big Island who wants the freshest, melt-in-your-mouth poke, you won’t be disappointed!

Google
Food: very fresh and reasonable price! The rice ratio is relatively high but their poke can make you finish it for sure. They offer many options from fish to octopus to scallop. Definitely recommend something with shoyu or spicy shoyu. Getting just poke is also more recommended! Service: very patient with tourists like us who can’t decide right away and friendly to recommend flavors and explain their menu. Ambiance: casual. You only get a few white benches outside so takeout is the most recommended option.

There are 2 eateries in this building: the Siusan Fish Market and Wailoa Grill right next to it on the other side of the building. Both are casual places for some of the freshest and tastiest seafood on the Big Island. Suisan Fish Market is great for poke and fresh fish while Wailoa Grill offers excellent seafood plate lunches. Go for the daily special and the ahi katsu if you see those on the menu. Best ahi katsu I’ve had-very crunchy light batter and super fresh juicy ahi.

05/02/2025 (Fri) We stopped by after the beach, excited to try some fresh poke. We had the Ahi Sesame Shoyu and Ahi Spicy Oyster bowls. While the variety of poke options was impressive, you can only choose either one type or two types per bowl—one type for $15.50 or two types for $18.50. There are no combo meals with side poke, and pricing is market-based, so we couldn't know the total cost in advance.🐟 There’s no seating inside, and the picnic tables next door belong to another establishment, so we ended up eating on a bench outside the shop. The rice was surprisingly firm—perhaps intentionally so, to avoid overpowering the poke’s flavor—but it was a bit too hard for our taste. The seasoning on the poke was lighter than expected, and since no sauce was added to the rice, we found ourselves eating plain white rice at the end. Looking back, we realized that ordering two ahi-based pokes wasn’t the best choice. The flavors were too similar, and we got tired of the taste halfway through. So maybe it was just our selection or personal preference. Still, even with the friendly staff, we don’t think we’d come back to try other options.🤔

Google
A great bite in Hilo! Fresh Poke prepared daily with some staples (spicy, ahi, etc) and some unique combinations like Caesar Also have prawns and other seafood to try Recommend getting here early as they sell out of popular dishes towards the end of the day Plenty of street parking and tables to eat out front (or eat at a local beach on the go!)

Google
Amazing market. High quality seafood! The staff is extraordinary friendly. We loved to get samples with a honest advice before purchasing it.

Google
I really enjoyed their poke and atmosphere. They had a BOGO special today for Ahi poke. Buy one pound, get one free. I wish I lived in Hilo, otherwise I would have done it! Driving back to Kona with 2 pounds of poke or eating it for 2 days while on a trip seems like madness. The sesame shoyu and spicy Ahi were good! Unfortunately (blessing in disguise) that they ran out of rice at 2pm today so I got salad instead. Skipping rice for lunch was actually good for me because we ate again shortly after. The staff were really friendly and I got the feeling they they enjoyed working there. I’d go there often if I lived in Hilo.

Google
Had a chance to visit today and I'm so glad that I did. Amazing experience started with Deedee....who was so friendly and helpful. We ended up getting Spicy Ahi Poke, Spicy Lobster Poke, Garlic Butter Scallop Poke and the Mix Plate Poke. Every single one was super fresh and super flavourful!!! If you're in town, be sure to stop buy...you won't regret it. Enjoy.

Yelp
This some good poke brah! Asked a few locals what they thought the best three poke places are and all mentioned this in place. They all said they run out by 1-2pm. Mind you this is a fish market so no seating inside but there are a couple of benches outside. It is all different type of Ahi preparations, Ahi Hawaiian, spicy Ahi, Hurricane Ahi, California Ahi, Ahi oyster and so on, no salmon. Fish is super fresh, can get poke bowl with rice or poke by the pound. We bought ours and walked a block over to the Japanese gardens and sat in a bench over looking the Bay and enjoyed this delicious poke. If you like poke and are in Hilo you must try even if you are in Kona it's worth the drive just for this Poke.

Yelp
Suisan is a fish market. You won't get better Poke. It's super fresh. With no indoor seating, we took our lunch outside and sat at one of the picnic tables. You're in Hawaii. You want to eat outside. To my surprise they had Moe's ice cream sandwiches. My daughter had told me about them, a not miss treat. I grabbed an Uber one and relished it. How will I do without beautiful purple Ube back home? This is a good spot for fresh Poke, and have a Moe's, too. 11

Yelp
Suisan Fish Market in Hilo is as local as it gets. Their poke is unreal--fresh, flavorful, and seasoned to perfection. The shoyu ahi and spicy poke are straight-up ono, and you can taste the aloha in every bite. It's a real Big Island experience, from the friendly folks behind the counter to the laid-back, Hilo vibes. Whether you're grabbing a poke bowl to enjoy by the bay or fresh fish for the grill, Suisan is the spot. No ka ʻoi--this is Hawaiʻi at its best!

Yelp
This is where you go for Poke in Hilo. Period! Both the ahi and salmon were so fresh, with lots of options for sauces. We got the wasabi salmon and it was delicious! The sesame ahi was good too! with the second topping of seaweed. Also at a very good reasonable price.
google avatar

Yelp
Fresh poke in Hilo! It's a fish market, so don't expect a sit down spot. It's a no frills type of place where you select your poke and eat it over a bed of rice. I forgot to take a picture of the selection, so unfortunately don't remember the name of the ones I tried but one of them it was a bit spicy! I do remember having a shoyu flavored one too, and that was really good. We weren't allowed sit on the red tables outside (a different business) but ate on the benches right in front of the place. Fast and easy lunch spot if you're in Hilo. Service was quick and friendly too!

Yelp
I love their Poke. I'm from California and I will never have the same poke in Cali. I can't wait to go back and experience the freshest Poke. The service was amazing. I will def go again! Beat Poke in the world.
google avatar

Yelp
Always stop by here whenever I'm in Hilo. They are by far the best poke I've had on BI. Freshest fish and fat fish chunks perfectly seasoned with things like warabi and limu. Their salmon broke da mouth!

Yelp
Really good poke- fresh! We got an assortment of poke and then hung out at the coconut island to enjoy the garden and beach area. My favorite was the Taegu - a little sweet and spicy, but I liked them all. Nothing beats fresh poke... we will come back. Service was fast and friendly and was really clean inside.
google avatar

Ben Y.

Yelp
Amazing! The poke here is fresh and delicious. While the price is a bit high, the quality and freshness can't be beat. We liked that they had options of just poke. Poke bowl or poke salad. The staff are so friendly and provided great suggestions. Even giving us warnings about the spice levels of some of their pokes. What I appreciated is that when they said the spicy oyster sauce was spicy , but it didn't overpower or take away from the fish being the star of the dish. The Hawaiian style poke was also a big hit with my family. Parking is a little small, but there is a good amount of street parking. But give this place a try when you are in town.

Yelp
Quick Summary This was my favorite poke spot on the Big Island. The quality of the fish was superb and I liked their variety of options (e.g. yuzu shoyu scallop and butter garlic Kauai prawns which were my favorites and recommendations). Street parking only. I recommend getting your order and eating at the Liliuokalani Park and Gardens or Coconut Island nearby. Food- 5 stars Best poke spot I've had on the Big Island. Fish quality was fantastic. But I especially liked the yuzu shoyu scallop and butter garlic Kauai prawns. Very balanced and not too salty They also have poke on discount, fish steaks, and frozen products on their shelves, so a great place to stock up as well. Service- 5 stars The staff members were very friendly and patient. Pretty easy and fast process Bottom Line My favorite poke spot on the Big Island. Definitely stop by if you're in Hilo. You won't regret trying the scallop and prawns!

Yelp
A must stop when in Hilo! This is the best fish market I have visited. Service was quick and friendly - plenty of parking in front of the business. We started by tasting and ordering a couple different types of Ahi Poke. They had two different counters to ordered at, so after we got our poke we stopped by the other counter to examine the other types of seafood. We ended up getting a couple pounds of Mahi Mahi, and some prawns. Once we got back to the house, we served the poke over rice and grilled the prawns/Mahi Mahi. The fish was incredibly fresh, tasty, and we are trying to figure out when we can stop by this place again! Friendly service, reasonable prices, and some of the best fish I have ever had.

Yelp
This place was at the top of my list to visit while in Hilo. We arrived about an hour before closing and found that they were mostly sold out of the Poke Fish. We did not end up eating here because of the lack of options that were left. They had outdoor seating but sitting there was a very angry man who appeared to be on drugs beating up a trash can with a metal rod. Just keep your eyes out. Parking is on the street.
google avatar

Yelp
So delicious in Hilo! Best poke I've had, and I'm not really a poke eater....but this was so good that I ate a lot of it. There was a hamachi one with a citrus-soy type sauce and a couple other varieties. High quality fresh fish (wasn't fishy) and bright bold flavors, big pieces, sooo good. Service is very friendly too, would recommend!
google avatar

Britni M.

Yelp
Quick little pick up spot near the gardens! Lots of street parking but no tables to sit down at so it's more of a to go place. We got the Hawaiian ahi poke nachos, and they were SO good. We shared, and I wish I hadn't. ;) a little pricey, but if you want authentic poke, this is a great spot in Hilo!
google avatar

Yelp
Suisan offers really fresh poke. This was one of the spots i was really looking forward to trying on my visit to Hilo. They have plenty of choices but to me the ahi was the best. It's texturally still very firm and even with lighter seasoning it didn't have any fishiness to it. Its also really close to the shore and its nice to walk over to a bench and watch the waves while enjoying the meal.
google avatar

Anny L.

Yelp
If there's one place you must go in Hilo, it would have to be Suisan Fish Market! Everything from the food to the service was top notch. Very friendly vibe and everyone there was extremely nice. They let us try so many samples and we ultimately opted for the sesame ahi tuna, salmon poke, tako and some seaweed salad. Honestly the best & freshest poke I've had on the big island!
google avatar

Art C.

Yelp
Very tasty. Their ahi poke basically melts in your mouth so the quality is there for sure. Now how does it hold up to the flavor gold standard (i.e. Foodland)? We'll call it a wash, lol... hmmm, Foodland by a nose. But the quality is definitely better here.
google avatar

Leah Anh N.

Yelp
This place is great for many variety of fresh poke fish. The poke tastes fresh. I like their seasoning. The staff was nice. They also sell some frozen items that I saw. Parking wise, we didn't have any trouble parking on the street in front of the building. We waited at the door for the staff to let us inside.
google avatar

Yelp
Best poke on the planet!! Fresh, great prices and lots of variety!! You gotta go visit when you are in Hilo!!
google avatar

Nathalie K.

Yelp
Stumbled onto Suisan as we were looking for a bite. So glad we did. The poke wash good but this green seaweed side was the bomb!!! We actually returned for more!

Yelp
We FINALLY visited here after so many years of hearing how great it is :) When we drove up, there was no line, and a sign in the door saying 4 customers max, wait to be waived in. This is difficult for newbies, as you're not sure how to be 'waived in' I felt like I was in the middle of Seinfelds Soup Nazi episode. Better get that order right and sidle over. Haha, no they were real friendly. The pleasant gal filled our two bowls with furikake rice, and we got two selections on each. I personally had the mango habanero and sesame shoyu. Both were delicious and super fresh. I wish the habanero was a little louder tho. We also looked thru the cooler at the end of the counter. I picked up a package of the 'hawaiian candy', a semi-dried seasoned ahi concotion. The clerk checking us out was very excited about it. It was VERY expensive ($35/lb i think). but I wasnt a fan, and brought more than half the package home to the mainland. Here again. single use plastic serving bowls make me grind my teeth. I wonder if theyre allowed to let you reuse on subsequent visits. Prices in line, great fresh poke, and an interesting experience.
google avatar

Mari T.

Yelp
Wow. The freshness of the fish was amazing. If you like spicy, the spicy oyster ahi was the hottest one. It was a bit too hot for me. I loved the honey garlic and oyster (sauce) salmon. The guava kimchee ahi didn't taste like either guava or kimchee. Spicy ahi was also very good and not too spicy. Can't wait to go back for more!
google avatar

Dabin K.

Yelp
Very fresh! Little bit pricey but great quality poke! Def recommend it. Service was also pretty good.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
I get it yo. You're in Hilo. You might be staying at the hotel right by the park. You WILL be coming here for poke. Get it. Pack it. Take it with you for lunch or breakfast or dinner or a snack. Really, you can't go wrong when a fish market sells you the poke. Get the sea grapes here too while you're at it (give them a little rinse in water first before you eat them straight up or with shoyu). You're welcome.
google avatar

Yelp
This might be my favorite poke place on the island! We visited before 10am on a Monday morning and there was no line. So many poke options to choose from! I usually like to ask the workers what their favorite poke is when there are so many and the guy was friendly and offered up some suggestions! He also allowed me to sample some different flavors which was much appreciated! I went with the Taegu (worker's fave) and Hurricane! Both tasted very fresh and absolutely delicious, but the Taegu one was a bit too sweet for me after a few bites. Still recommend 100%. It was a delicious poke bowl to start off the day!
google avatar

Bethany W.

Yelp
Fish market, as the name suggests. Very excellent poke. So fresh and so many flavors to choose from. Unfortunately, the eating area was not open so we ate our poke in the park across the street. I got the poke salad, and I appreciated that the romaine lettuce was crispy. Staff were nice but I did feel pressure to make my selection quickly since there was a steady flow of customers. Would come back if I'm ever in Hilo again.
google avatar

Helen L.

Yelp
We were 8 minutes till they open. 8 long minutes. They let us sample. The shoyu poke tastes like butter melt in your mouth. They were super nice. We were doing a la carte, and we got scallops. picnic style. We saved our toothpicks. Bought some onigri to compliment our poke.
google avatar

Con C.

Yelp
Best poke on the island. Great price, huge chunks of fish, flavorful and friendly service. What more could you want. Liliuokalani gardens across the street is a great place to sit and eat to enjoy your meal. Would come here everyday if I could.
google avatar

Kenneth T.

Yelp
This place had such a lasting impression on me that I've been wanting to come back since I first got to have poke here 4 YEARS ago! Ever since then, I compare all my poke to this place and finally got to be back again today. What has changed: 1) no more poke plate but just bowls, 2) salmon and hamachi are ONLY sold by the lb and no longer an option for poke bowls. Unsure if you can ask to have it on a bowl with rice but will ask next time. I had the Hawaiian Ahi and Scallops this time. It was alright. Ahi was not as tender and the scallops were overly salty instead of the sweet scallops that I prefer from Hokkaido. So so glad I got hamachi and salmon oyster for sides. These were the redeeming pokes that made it a satisfying meal. Which is why I mention earlier that next time when I'm back, will see if I can get rice to go with these two even if I have to pay by the lb because they were AMAZING! Hawaiian candies were tasty and since it's dehydrated, easier to carry on the road back to Kona and have it for dinner.
google avatar

Jacqueline T.

Yelp
Since I'm always on the hunt for the best poke when in Hawaii, I found myself here when in Hilo. My husband and I shared a Spicy Ahi & Shoyu Ginger Poke bowl. The Spicy Ahi was good as expected, but the Shoyu Ginger was my favorite. Ginger was the perfect pairing with the fish. We got there in the early afternoon. They were pretty much out of everything. We got the last pre-made bowl, but there was no tuna left to make bowls of your choosing. I'd recommend getting here early.
google avatar

Erik D.

Yelp
So much Poke!!! This place is legit and dalicious. I ordered the two choice poke rice bowl. There were a variety of poke to choose from, I think I prefer the spicer options, but it was all good poke. Everything was surprisingly great priced as well.
google avatar

Mara M.

Yelp
Cool place by the water. Plenty of tables nearby to enjoy your meal and an awesome botanical garden to walk through. I paid around $16 for a scoop of the spicy ahi poke bowl. It was delicious and filling, I wish I had added one of their sides they looked incredible ( next time I will).
google avatar

C L.

Yelp
They are closed on Sundays & Wednesdays. Come here by noon else you will have limited options. Tasty fresh poke bowls and fair prices. Bring food to the nearby park with the most amazing view. Expect a huge line on certain days.
google avatar

Rebecca W.

Yelp
Come get your poke on!! Fresh off the boat feel at this fish market. Multiple options of poke with different size options. Not a dime in place but you can go across to the small beach area or go a few hundred feet to the gorgeous park down the road; I went to the park and was around cats, birds, mongoose, geckos, and lizards. Staff here was excellent; they helped explain the different styles and options of poke and meals.
google avatar

Krajicek K.

Yelp
Definitely a must visit place if you like poke! The best poke place on the island! The fish is so fresh that it melt in the mouth. Suisan has a lot more choices of poke compared to others on the island. We bought about 1/2 pound each of the spicy ahi and lobster salad poke. The spicy level was just right for us. Both poke have big chunk of ahi and lobster. The lobster salad poke also has flying fish eggs which made the poke has a crunchy texture. Yummy!!! We also like the fact that one can choose between white rice, brown rice, and salad.
google avatar

Kate C.

Yelp
Really fresh fish. The spicy versions were better than the wasabi versions. Note: Seaweed/Wakame salad is called ocean salad here. Everything is tasty. My favorite was the crab salad side dish. The pineapples were super sweet. The one thing that bothered me was the inconsistency in the scoops. One servers scoops more than the other. They also weigh our boxes after but this does not affect the price. I wonder why? We got salad based while others got rice based so I'm sure the rice base weighs more.
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
Large section of the freshest fish in Hilo. The poke bowls are my favorite. Keep in mind it's a fish market and not a restaurant so there's no dining area.
google avatar

Tracy C.

Yelp
The poke is amazing the best on the island!! it is so fresh. Every time I visit Hawaii that's my first stop.
google avatar

Sophia B.

Yelp
Got their poke bowl with two generous scoops of ahi Hawaiian and ahi spicy. Preferred my kid's ahi shoyu over my ahi Hawaiian, which could've used a little more salt or seasoning. Lots of rice leftover with three poke bowls, so should get just the poke next time.
google avatar

Mac S.

Yelp
Great Poke joint in Hilo with excellent selection of Poke. Loved the vibe there, and the poke was very good. Totally would recommend. The place is sort of small, doesn't offer that much parking, but I didn't find it that crowded when I went. Tip: They do not have indoor seating, but the place is very close to Lili'uokalani Gardens where you can take your food and eat (where we ate). We saw a handful of people also bringing their food to Coconut Island right next to Lili'uokalani Gardens for even a better place to eat.
google avatar

AJ K.

Yelp
Here's what you need to know: awesome poke and seafood place that's super popular with locals and tourists alike. Best Otoro (fatty blue fin tuna) I've had in The US. Melts in your mouth perfection. Long wait lines so be ready for that. Poke was really good too but the rice was lacking. They also have some awesome seafood platters and unique epicurean options like monk fish liver. Overall, we are so happy we got to try this place and it was worth the wait. Great quality. Meal for 4 was $100 because of otoro which was 60 on its own.
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
This was the best poke I've ever had. SO FRESH. So delightful. Good portion size and lots of options to choose from. Need to come here if in Hilo!!!
google avatar

Johnelle C.

Yelp
My friend who lives in Hilo recommended us to come and try the poke here because it is fresh. Omg he was so right. We had two poke bowls with hot rice ninja style meaning they add kabayaki sauce, a sweet sauce that enhances the fish, and bubu arare. We tried 4 different pokes that were vastly different in flavor profile than anything I've tried before. So yummy and fun. We also got some king salmon poke which was melt in your mouth yummy. My goodness I could eat that all day. My tip for you is that if you get a poke bowl you could go and picnic at the Japanese park next door. Enjoy the views of the ocean or the many fishponds while you sit under a shady tree. Such a nice day.
google avatar

Sitar T.

Yelp
Suisan's poke is delicious! We stopped by here the first time we came to Hilo and we made sure we stopped here again on this trip! The spicy tuna poke is fresh and just melts in your mouth. Make sure you get here early though...they run out!
google avatar

Sarah K.

Yelp
Great seafood - super fresh! You can either buy freshly caught fish by the pound or get yourself a poke bowl. There are many options for poke to choose from and they're all delicious! Once you choose the poke they add rice with seaweed toppings so good. No extra sauces needed. All other sides like seaweed salad, macaroni salad etc are extra and are giving in separate containers. Service was ok... the guy working there didn't seem like he wanted to be there and kept rushing everyone to pick something, but the lady at the counter was super friendly.
google avatar

Stephen W.

Yelp
This place is a combination fish market and restaurant although it does not offer any seating. Most of the fish offerings are by the pound and intended to be taken home. There is a limited selection of poke bowls. A one fish bowl is $13.50. The wife and I each got a one fish bowl which comes with rice. One was shoyu flavored ahi and the other was Hawaiian flavored ahi, whatever that means. The ahi tasted super fresh and was great going down. Unfortunately, shortly thereafter both the wife and had some stomach problems. Not sure if it the problem was our stomach or the fish, but we usually don't have problems with raw fish.

R K.

Yelp
I got some scallops and they had definitely gone bad. Got very sick. I really wanted to like this place.

Beau T.

Yelp
I'm blind and kept walking past this cute shop and greeting the "ladies" i thought I passed. Boy was I embarrassed when a friend told me. Live and learn. Regards Beau Toichi

Yelp
Service was quick and Easy. Ambience shocked me but it was a cool experience because it's basically a fish market. Food was delicious. Salmon is extremely tasty, but the tuna was a bit salty for my taste. Scallops were good but also a bit too salty.
