The Delight of the Indian Combo Platter Around NYC | Eater NY

"I visited Sukhadia’s, a strictly vegetarian chain, and found the Gujarati thali ($18) to reflect western India's cuisine, featuring spicy buttermilk, a savory chickpea dish, a pea fritter, and roti served with chunks of unrefined sugar." - Robert Sietsema

Google
This is my favorite place for Jalebi, they never disappoint on jalebi, we get hot and fresh jalebi every day and their service was really good. They have other sweets and savory items too. They have plenty of parking

Nilay Mistry

Google
I recently purchased Halwason (One of Sukhadia’s traditional sweets) and it was amazing! This bestseller reminded me of India with its perfect blend of flavors and just the right sweetness. A must-try for anyone craving authentic Indian taste sweet!

Devireddy Prathibareddy

Google
Worst food. They have no salt and spice and price is very high. Poor service.waste of money. Look at this meal, waste of my money. It appears to be nice but not even one item is tasty.

Google
I'm usually hesitant to leave negative reviews, but my recent experience was unfortunately subpar. The khasta kachori I ordered lacked freshness and had a stale smell, suggesting it had been fried days prior. Unfortunately, I couldn't even finish half of it and had to discard it. To make matters worse, the outdoor seating area was neglected, with dirty tables and chairs. Furthermore, I was appalled to see the servers handling food without gloves, which is absolutely unacceptable from a hygiene standpoint. It's disappointing to see such a lack of attention to detail and concern for customer health. Hopefully, the management will take steps to address these issues and improve the quality and service. Until then, I would think twice before returning.

Google
I don't see a reason for this rating. I loved this place's delicious jalebis, Samosa, and snacks. Name a sweet snack that will be available at this place. Wide range of options and freshly made. It was interesting to know the history of the parrot names sukhadia.

Google
We’ve ordered from here before for an event and really enjoyed the taste. However, this time we walked out without placing an order because the staff didn’t seem to know much about the Indian sweets. It was disappointing, especially when you expect guidance or suggestions. A bit more training or hiring staff familiar with the products would really improve the experience. The quality is there, but the service needs to match.

Jaswinder Singh

Google
Very stale rotten food. I ordered samosas today and upon reaching home I realized that the potato filling is spoiled and has very bad taste and smell. I called the store and the management did not even address the issue or post refund. I hope the management takes appropriate steps to maintain the quality of food. I live in Connecticut and would not bother to go back the store but would consider reporting to the health department.

Vedant Daga

Google
nice place to get a variety snacks and sweets from. The dabeli they serve is really good and worth trying, although a bit spicy but still very flavorful. would have liked for them to have ventilation or air conditioning inside the store, as it was rather stuffy and very warm

Yelp
we just got Diwali Sweets sent to us from our son's in-laws. the sweets were stale and tasted bitter. seemed like Barfi was made in last Diwali and shipped now to us. The anjeer was bitter. I do not what was wrong with both types of ladoo. they tasted horrible. So many different types of Barfis and all were horrible than each other. I called and the lady on the phone was so rude and will not accept my complaint. She was horrible than the sweets. I wish I can give them ZERO SRAR . HORRIBLE SWEETS and HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE.
google avatar

Ramma G.

Yelp
Don't waste your money here. Food quality was horrible. All the chats we ordered looked same and tasted bad. Too much salt, zero flavours. Masala cheese fries were missing cheese. The restaurant floor was extremely dirty including the food preparation area. The staff packing jalebis and sweets were not even wearing gloves and eating while packing our food. Disgusting experience!!!
google avatar

Mohan M.

Yelp
No one even answered the telephone for us to place an order We were looking forward to getting some snacks but moved on to other places

Yelp
The Emerti was horrible and oily - literally dripping stale oil. I walked back into the store and tried to return it. The owner was very rude and said it is meant to be oily. I know what an emerti is, dude. He said he doesn't take any returns. What an amazing customer service! I left the box of Emerti at the counter never to come here again.

Shiva Tala Institute o.

Yelp
WAY OVER PRICED for the quality! Went there because we had no option but never buying from here again. 10 samosas and 3 small rasmalai dabbas were $70+ unheard of. Gave us packed chutney instead of fresh. Samosa and Rasmalai were OK.

Laxmi S.

Yelp
Me and 19 ladies went to Sukhadia on 9th May for Mothers' day' lunch. Staff was amazing and they set up a special table for us.Methi Gota, Gujarati Kaddhi and famous Delicious Halvasan was the best. Thanks to Sukhadia crew.

Dakasha P.

Yelp
on 9 th may we day 19 people and the food they gave was a round plate food was horrible we paid $25 per plate shivas was bitter panned vegetable was horrible parotha was not nice. Only 2 ladies serving and was a disaster I will not recommend this restaurant owner should look in to this

Yelp
Fresh and lot of variety. They serve authentic Indian sweets and street food. Very clean and a must stop for us if we visit Edison. This is probably the only place that serves hot jalebi, which we love the most, and drive 80 miles for.

Leena L.

Yelp
Service was excellent at Sukhadia. We were 19 women for lunch it's was an absolute amazing treat Swati and her team went out of their way to serve us. This was a mother's day get together on Thursday 5/9/2024

Yelp
This place has been a staple on oaktree dr for many years. Food quality is consistent and reliable. Hits the right spot for some basic cravings. But, nothing too crazy. On a bit pricier side compared competition, hence the lower rating.

Yelp
Made a stop here as it was right next door to where my parents took me to lunch for my last day in the area (mid March 2021). Social distancing protocols are not being properly followed, there's no limit capacity being monitored ( we walked in and it was already somewhat crowded, and then a few minutes after a large group of 9 people walked in; just a lot of people in the store for social dista, and customers are not socially distancing nor is staff addressing the concern. The staff all wore masks and most wore gloves, so thumbs up there. The place itself was clean and pretty organized product wise. Just not a clearly identified flow for foot traffic. I checked in to this spot, and received a 10% off coupon for it, which I thought was a really nice perk! However, once we got to the register to check out, they refused to honor it because it was a promotion during a previous holiday. If that is the case, why is it still available? It should be removed. I would also understand if the coupon specified it was for the holiday, but it didn't. It just rubbed me the wrong way that they were rude about it and took zero ownership of the mistake and acted like I was out of line for asking them why is it still available today then. It was simply a "no, it's for a previous holiday, we can't". Just poor customer service on their part during this experience. I even asked if they plan to remove it so they don't have to disappoint another customer. And all I got was a "shrug". Either way, we were still going to purchase the products we picked out, which totaled about 70bucks worth of Indian sweets, including their freshly made jalebi which seemed to be a crowd pleaser since there was line just for that station. (They were wayyy too sweet for my taste, but my dad absolutely loved them). They also have some crafts/cards/novelty items from India which looked cool. Small selection of it, but still cool they had some option to browse through for those interested. Customer service/management needs some work and knocked them down a full star for my personal experience. The second star was a combination of the lack of addressing customers not following social distancing or limiting capacity, as well as for some of the products I ended up trying.

Vijay S.

Yelp
we bought 2 pounds of jalebi and it had this burnt ghee smell. Requested to exchange but they refused. $28 gone to wast. very rude and no Customer service. Never visit this place again.
google avatar

Madhavi S.

Yelp
Had a nice yummy tummy Friday night after groceries. ** Vada pav has wet chutney but it still tastes yum. ** Jalebis are the best here . ** pav bhaji was too good They have lot of sweets .

Drashti P.

Yelp
Number one sweets in America. specially jalebi is very famous in Sukhadiya. I like the most kesar pista jalebi. All employees are friendly and they guide for sweets perfectly. manager also helpful for big order. so thank you Sukhadiya and team.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
We made a stop here on our way to Newark airport. We ordered the jalebi w/almond chips, methi gota, dabeli. For the drinks we ordered masala soda, masala chai, and salty lassi. The jalebi was too sweet. The methi gota was pretty close to authentic except the size was too big, there was no chilli inside, and did not offer papaya salad on the side. The dalebi was not that good because the bread was incorrectly chosen and the sauce was too little. The masala soda was very good as well as salty lassi. Overall, some things are hit-or-miss but pretty authentic as per my Indian in-laws.

Kedar C.

Yelp
The guy at the counter was not well aware of the items in their inventory, which really causes the confusion while ordering food. Also the service is poor and food seemed from last night.

Mafat L.

Yelp
Wow what a disappointment and drop in quality. Recently placed a large catering order of puri and sabzi. The food was not only bland it smelled odd. Puri was tasteless and made days ago. Never again will place any catering order from this location. Be warned if you are considering catering from Sukhadia.

Yelp
People here are professionally trained to be rude and non-responsive. The entire staff (including the owner) are super racist. If you don't speak their language which is Gujrati, you are royally fuc*ed. While you will be standing in the line forever and screaming "Excuse me", other gujrati people will gladly cut the line, get served well and enjoy. This place is a true example of creating a black mark on the entire community of Gujratis, who by the way, are really nice and incredible people. So, if you want to be ignored, insulted and robbed for mediocre food, look no further. There is no place in entire NJ that can give this unforgettable experience. BTW, the Sukhadias in Parsipanny also gives same treatment. So the leadership is really successful in passing on the culture torch. Kudos! I think being an ahole skips a generation but you guys broke the record!!

Yelp
There are two reviews below, one for the sweet/snack shop and the other for their restaurant. 1. Sweet/snack shop : Visiting Sukhadia's gives me immense happiness. It is probably the only place in entire North East US, serving such a wide variety of Indian sweets and snacks, which are the closest to their authentic tastes. For sweet lovers, this place is heaven. The sweets are tasty, quality is superb and prices are reasonable. The place is maintained very clean. Their jalebis rock ! I drive several hundred miles to get their jalebis. They have sugar-free jalebis too. Various burfis, gulab jamun, rasgullas etc are amazing. Mango shrikhand is very tasty. The different chivdas and mix are not as spicy as I would have liked them, they are in fact a little too sweet for my palate. The theplas and parathas are okay. Khandvi and Dhokla are terrific. Pakodas and Kachori is fine, but a little oily. They check out is fast. I just wish the ladies smile a little. 2. Restaurant: Have dined here only twice. They have a small restaurant, seats only a few people. The service is good and fast. Once they served us complimentary pani puri which we really appreciated. We had the veg biryani, which really does not taste anything like biryani, but nevertheless tastes really good if you pretend it's pulao. Pav bhaji is decent. I was delighted to see Misal Pav on their menu. Misal Pav was average, not as spicy as it should be and tasted more like cooked daal rather than a mix of lentils and sprouts. It was not bad though. Mix veg Uttapam was also average, but sambhar was good. They also serve really good Masala Tea.

Yelp
I always go here for dabali and other indian dishes. Today I stopped here to get dabali and shrikhand and i was very disappointed. The Dabali was not at all fresh, it was cold and looked stale and the Shrikhand had Mold on it. I call the number on google for the restaurant and the person who picked up was nice and ready to give me a new pack which is fine but people trust you the food and you feed them THIS. The container is $11.99. Which is expensive to start with plus spoiled. I am suprised they dont check their product before staking them on the shelf? NOTGOOD. They just lost a customer.

Radha K.

Yelp
So we have been a loyal customer of sukhadia for over 2 decades ever since it was a tiny shop. But I'm sadenned to report that things have started to go downhill. The fresheness just isn't there anymore with their sweets. You can tell that they are days or even weeks old at times. This just isn't acceptable when Sukhadia charges beyond premium for their items. This other thing might seem minor but sukhadia always used to pack their items in boxes which went in paper bags. With NJ banning plastic bags, one would think no impact to sukhadia. But I was beyond shocked to witness at my recent visit that they either expect customers to bring their own bag or charge $1 to buy a bag. Again, when you charge premium for your items, how can you not manage to pack it in a paper bag? It just seems beyond ridiculous to me that customers were carrying a whole bunch of items in their hands. Wake up and take note Sukhadia. It's these little things that take your loyal customers to other businesses. I for sure won't be driving 30+ minutes to give them my business.

Yelp
Been here couple of times, I had there samosa Chat and Jalebi, It was good and place is also nice.
google avatar

Ronak P.

Yelp
Management is utterly slow and rude. I was very eager to try when I found them, so I decided to try my favorite dish khaman but I would never recommend it The khaman were literally frozen as cold and taste was not what I expected. The gits ready made khaman are way better and definitely cheaper I added chips to my bag for trying later. Those were fresh but couldn't satisfy the taste. Please improve quality and management.

Yelp
I wanted to let you that we had a very bad and unpleasant experience with the sweets we received ordered from Sukhadia's. Fedex delivered our sweets a day late and when we opened many of the boxes with Motichoor Ladoo, they were all spoilt and had mold on them. Picture attached. This is unacceptable given that many of the guests who received the boxes called us and expressed their concern and worry. I reached out to the merchant to express this concern and hopes they would at least call back and express regret over the matter. They barely cared to respond or call me back.
google avatar

Raj S.

Yelp
Average food.. service is also really slow .. love their mirchi bajji.. savories are good.. Jilebi is also good .. other sweets aren't as good as before .. would prefer mithaas instead..
google avatar

Dhaval M.

Yelp
The place is renovated and completely new. The menu also had lots of additions to it. My personal favorites are samosa and khandvi. The taste of the samosa has changed recently or may be it was due to close to closing hour time. Mostly good experiences except couple of times. They also have fresh fafda during occasions like dusshera, Diwali etc

Oshin A.

Yelp
Horrible food. Not one thing tasted good. They put cold cheese slices right out of the fridge in the burger.
google avatar

Ujwala K.

Yelp
This review has been pending from July of 2017. I went there on a Thursday afternoon with my cousin and ordered 2 chaat items to go but we ultimately got was paneer pakoda and cutlet pieces. Huhhh?? Really??? And they dont/didnt answer the calls. I left it after a few days but I decided that I will write a review whenever that may be. So here it is now. Go there only if they are doing/giving/packing right in front of your eyes or if u want to waste money.

Yelp
If I could I would give them zero stars. This place is just too hyped and is horrible in terms of their good, service, ppl working there, cleanliness. I have been here twice so far and both times I had bad experience. The first time I came which was 3-4 years ago a lady tried to force her contact details to me and wouldn't give me stuff which I asked for snd instead insisted that I buy from her directly. She used to work here but wanted her own business to flourish I guess? The second time and hopefully the last time ever I visited this place was recently post covid , and the lady behind the counter rushed me into ordering fast without even letting me think what kinda sweets I wanted to order. There was no one waiting after me but it seemed like she just wanted to be done with customers and not answer their questions. Talking about their food, the snacks I have tried have oil smell in them depending on what you get and the sweets are not fresh at all. They smell and are most of the time stale. Not coming back ever again
google avatar

Neet K.

Yelp
Felt like eating papri chaat while shopping for Diwali. Two aunties working in the kitchen are super rude, arrogant, and ill mannered . There is a sardaar ji working in the kitchen and both aunties are super disrespectful to him. I was furious to see this. Both aunties didn't wear gloves or mask while assembling the chats. They assembled the food and literally threw food in the plate and yes who cares about hygiene and presentation. I didn't even felt like eating the food and was really grossed out by the whole scene. Oh and plastic spoons were all tougher by many people and were oily with ginger marks on them. Didn't eat that food. Pandemic or not they need to be mindful of hygiene and cleanliness. One person touching those spoons while sneezing into their hands and will be spreading the germs. Shame on Sukhariyas. Other places around are much more clean than this place.
google avatar

Vijay A.

Yelp
Have always loved their Jalebi's which is what a lot of people come here for, but of late their Jalebis have been totally disappointing, and it's not a one off case either. I gave them another try after a long time and got 3 lbs of Jalebi, a day before Diwali and they were soft/soggy/thick in consistency and hardly any almond/pistachio garnish. No good !!

Manas P.

Yelp
We decided to go to Sukhadia at oak tree road today to enjoy sum chat. It was a big mistake. The papdi chat we order was smelling bad and it had definitely expired a month back. Samosa chat was cold with very dry and cold Samosas. The bombay sandwich was a saver but it a very basic sandwich. Highly recommend NOT to try Sukhadia

Tina M.

Yelp
Very disappointed by how they CHEAT on PRICE. I bought a box of BAKLAVA ,which they increased the price to 19.99 just for Diwali, which is just not right.
google avatar

Ramya S.

Yelp
This place is over hyped, but doesn't meet the expectations. As our friends suggested, they are famous for their jalebis. They are not the best, but better than many sweet shops in US. They should however work on their package. I was visiting from a different state, and the juice from the jalebis soaked the paper box and ruined the container completely. Their savory snacks - lot of options but very few good ones. We tasted a few samples, it's not fresh, nor taste good. We ended up buying two different snacks. They tasted decent and one box smelled stale oil. Apart from this, they should work on their customer service. Chaos everywhere, rude staff.
google avatar

Ashwini D.

Yelp
Go for the jalebis for sure! They are absolutely delightful at Sukhadias Everytime I have visited them! So crunchy and scrumptious that I recommend everyone who loves Jalebis to get it from here! Haven't tried anything apart from their Paan icecream and some namkeen, but this place is bomb for Jalebis and Samosas! So much so, that we are taking 5lbs to Maryland for NJ for a gathering! Go for it!!
google avatar

Victor A.

Yelp
Just to update over a year later and further communication with customer service by phone still no voucher. Seems staff turnover is so high nobody knows what was previously agreed. Perhaps not just poor customer service but equally poor employment policies.
google avatar

Radha V.

Yelp
Was a fan till now .. almost a regular customer of panjabi samosas. But last weekend bought some home n they were so bad like spoiled ! Someone forgot to make it right
google avatar

Jahnavi U.

Yelp
A trip to Little India in Edison wouldn't be complete without stopping by this place to get a box of mouth watering sweets. Whether I go with friends or family, we finish finish our shopping and head over here to get a bite to eat. My favorites are pani puri, samosa chaat, and chili pakora. Most of the snacks are less than $10 and pretty filling. After we're done, I usually let my eyes wander and get a box of delectable sweets from among the many shelves. I would recommend the nutty burfis, kalakand or milk sweet. If you like Indian ice cream or kulfi, they have some pops you can buy on the go. They even have sugar free sweets which I think is very healthy of them.
google avatar

Samir B.

Yelp
Very bad experience we ordered some Indian snacks and other items order was very promptly accepted and processed but when we received some items were open in the box and spilled about 4 items of snacks cost $16 only so nicely contacted customer service they called back but no resolution they blamed UPS and refused to do anything very disappointed in resolution which is none You can count that I will never ever order from you again I thought I can help local community of hard workers but whatever Enjoy my free money Very bad service and rude person talk with was RAJU Buddy hope you enjoy my free$16 God bless you

Tanay G.

Yelp
Best Jalebi in North America.. visited twice in one year ( just to mention it is 400+ miles from us)

Manish P.

Yelp
When you buy sweets here. Make sure it is fresh. I bought jalebi fafda. When I had, I got diarrhea. It seems the quality of food is very much degraded. The peda sweet was of less than average quality.
google avatar

Quiz S.

Yelp
Good location but the food they sell is not worth the money you will spend there.. Items are not fresh and are a bit too pricey for their quality.

Shubham D.

Yelp
Les quantity, Food is not mentioned properly on the website. Management is not working properly at the store they don't know what to provide on which order.
google avatar

Jasmine C.

Yelp
The service here is horrible. We bought a few mithai for Diwali and were considering buying some diyas too. At the last minute we changed our minds and asked to take the diyas out of our order and the cashier said that she did. They STILL CHARGED US for them which we only realized when we got home. Sure this may have been an accident but now they won't even pick up the phone. I can't help but think they purposely don't to avoid refunding mistakes or receiving complaints.
google avatar

TJ D.

Yelp
Sukhadiya has stood the TASTE (pun intended) if time, an absolute best for Indian sweets and munchies. And the Jalebies are to die for hand down the best dare I say as good as if not better to jalebies back home. Everytime I visit Sukhadia I put on about a pound or so
google avatar

Meghana A.

Yelp
A visit to jersey means no cooking for a week and a visit to jersey is never complete without a box of sweets and savories from sukhadia's . Although I have never visited this sweet shop myself, I have had food from here ample times. My husband visits jersey for work and never returns home without Indian takeout....Knowing what I like most he almost always get me a box of my favorite Jalebi's (I could eat 1/2 a pound in one sitting) and I'd have 3 more such boxes for the week, they are fresh, thin and crispy but off late I hate to say that the quality has declined drastically...is so bad it's always stale. He also picks up a variety of chat and savories... Eaten there it sure is good but since we takeout I can't say the same. But still good for CT standards. I think it's time I pay them a visit myself....until then it's takeout for me

Trex T.

Yelp
5 * for Good jalebi. That's it! Just take it and walk out. Customer service : bad ! Chats/ other stuff : bad ! Yelling at people will shorten ur line but won't make them visit again!

Yelp
Sukhadias has always the freshest and good quality ingredients in their snacks and sweets. Based in NYC Whenever I am in NJ do make a special trip to savor their delicacies especially Samosa/freshly made jalebis. Though they are most of the time short staffed and the wait can be super frustrating I want to toast a special shout out to Ratna who is always on her toes and smilingly willing to help. She is a special employee who works like a partner which is missing in so many food chains. On some rare occasions I have been surprised to find her even in the Windsor and Parsippany locations. I even commented you are everywhere do you fly places? Overall a good Indian Vegetarian Bistro which can improvise for better
