Chikarayama — an unforgettable Kyoto dining experience From the moment we stepped into Chikarayama, we knew we were in for something special. Tonight’s meal was easily one of the best I’ve had in Kyoto: the sukiyaki and shabu-shabu half-and-half set was simply divine. Each bite balanced rich, comforting broth with the pristine, melt-in-your-mouth quality of the thinly sliced beef. The flavors were deep and refined, with subtle sweetness in the sukiyaki and a delicate, clean finish from the shabu-shabu — together they made for a perfect harmony. The service was outstanding. The staff were warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming from start to finish. They explained the dishes and made us feel completely at ease, elevating the whole evening beyond just great food. We were seated on the third floor in a quaint, traditional-style area with low tables where you sit on tatami mats — an intimate, authentic setting that added to the charm and made the meal feel special and memorable. If you’re planning a visit to Kyoto, do yourself a favor and eat at Chikarayama. Superb food, top-notch hospitality, and a lovely atmosphere combine to make this one of my favourite dining experiences. Highly, highly recommended.

One of the best meals I had in Kyoto! We dined on 3/8 and each of the courses was different and delicious. The staff were all very kind ᵕ̈ Can’t wait for my next trip to Kyoto so I can eat here again!

I have to agreed that this is a Tourist Trap! The food itself was acceptable but quite average, and considering the price point is on the high side, I feel there are many other restaurants in Kyoto where you can enjoy a better overall meal for the same budget. While we were standing outside looking at the menu, we were invited in by two staff members, which initially felt welcoming. Upon entering the restaurant on the second floor, however, the experience became a bit overwhelming. The staff were extremely enthusiastic, to the point of feeling overly aggressive. Throughout the meal, we were repeatedly asked to take photos and videos of every dish. Towards the end, we were also requested to take a selfie together, were given a complimentary photo, and were then encouraged to leave a review. While I understand this may be part of their service or marketing approach, it felt excessive and disrupted the dining experience. Overall, the service was very energetic, but I personally would have preferred a more relaxed and comfortable atmosphere to enjoy the meal at my own pace. Total spending at 32,780 yen

I had sukiyaki here and it was fantastic. I didn’t even choose the highest-grade beef set, but the flavor was already rich and satisfying. The beef was tender, beautifully marbled, and cooked to just the right level. The texture and taste were absolutely spot on. The service was amazing as well. The staff were friendly, attentive, and genuinely made the experience enjoyable. They even offered to help us take photos and made sure everything felt perfect throughout the meal. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and all the ladies working here were so lovely and full of good energy. 😍

Our first Sukiyaki experience and it was absolutely wonderful! Japanese cuisine never disappoints, and the warmth of the people makes it even more special. This place exceeded all expectations — we’d highly recommend it. The staff were simply fantastic.

We had an incredible experience from start to finish. The wagyu beef was on another level, melt-in-your-mouth, rich, and full of flavor. Everything was also outstanding, and the shabu-shabu was prepared perfectly. The service was truly exceptional. Everyone was warm and attentive, making the whole experience even more special. A big shoutout to Syu, who was not only an amazing cook but also made the meal fun, interactive, and memorable. Booked this restaurant online before our visit to Kyoto and it was one of the best meals we had. We got the Arashiyama course which was a good amount of food. Everything tasted really really delicious. We were actually a bit late because of the bus but they were so kind and understanding. The staff were very friendly and tried to speak to us and make conversation throughout the meal. We had seats right in front of the kitchen so we had a view to the preparations which was also nice. Overall a great meal and I would definitely come back again.

The beef was so tender it melted in my mouth, and every bite was full of rich flavor. The broth, the vegetables, the egg dip—everything was perfectly balanced. On top of that, the service was amazing. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience feel special. This meal was truly out of this world for me.
