Whiskies From Unexpected Countries - AFAR

"With a climate to rival the isles of Scotland, Tasmania is producing some of the best whisky in the world. There are at least 22 distilleries on the small island just below the Australian mainland, but its best is Sullivans Cove. Founded in 1996, Sullivans Cove put Australian whisky on the map in 2014, when it released a French oak cask single malt that garnered several awards and much acclaim. Today, Sullivans Cove bottles easily command a price upward of $200 and are considered rare since only around 70 casks are filled each year. Distilled in Tasmania’s capital of Hobart, which was once a penal colony where British convicts were sent (its motto is “Distilled with Conviction”), Sullivans Cove uses only Tasmanian-grown barley and pure Tasmanian water. Its small-batch whiskies are aged in either American oak ex-bourbon barrels or French oak ex-tawny barrels (or both) anywhere between 9 and 18 years." - Devorah Lev-Tov

I visited on last Thursday, and the whisky tasting flight was amazing, providing a great experience to me in Distillery. One of the staff served us well and told us about their famous American and French oak! However, not all staff are good and polite. Two bottles were taken away from my table without any notice , and she ignored me even while I was still tasting. I asked her what happened when she did the same action to me. Her answer was, "I needed to borrow “ and went to take the bottle to the next table. The whisky taste is amazing, but the service is too embarrassing ! The service is like a pub!

Staff were fantastic and the tasting room was gorgeous. The tasting room was classy, comfortable, and moody. The whiskey was delicious and there were lots of options to choose from. Overall a really great experience.

New tasting room, very classy and comfort. Luckily drive pass, no info on the web yet. Have many special bottles to try with a price that will give you a big simile, if you are whisky enthusiast. Very complete collection cannot find anywhere.

Some really fine spirits here! Totally enjoyable and quite unique for Australia. The older bottling are pretty much impossible to get though the new releases are delicious on their own terms. Quite the drams! Definitely worth the prizes!

Harry was such a great guide, very knowledgeable and friendly. After a long time I was able to visit my favourite Australian whisky maker. Was good to be able to hear about some of the history about distilleries in Tasmania and seeing the whisky making process. The tasting was great, loved every bit of it. I arrived early and the front of house staff were extremely friendly. Was offered two whisky to taste, both of which can only be had at the distillery. Ended up purchasing two bottles to be delivered and service was great, made sure everything was right before I was on my way. Look forward to taking another tour at Sullivan's Cove when they move locations on the Hobart harbour.

The tour is high-quality and informative, and it concludes with a fantastic tasting session that is sure to delight any whiskey enthusiast. Overall, I highly recommend the Sullivans Cove Distillery tour for anyone interested in learning more about the whiskey-making process and trying some delicious, high-quality spirits.

Since the distillery is temporarily closed, we went to the tasting room at Cascade Brewery. We did a normal flight and old & rare flight. I have been to whiskey brewery tastings in Scotland, Japan and Taiwan. Though not a connoisseur myself, I found myself loving Sullivans Cove whiskey the best. Tasting is not free, you pay for whichever flight you choose.

Fantastic experience in the tasting room. The staff were friendly and patient, and were more than happy to share lots of information about their whiskies on offer. Had the old and rare whisky tasting flight, after which they then offered a bonus tasting of the special cask and american oak single cask bottlings which were available for sale in the cellar door. Very close to Hobart Airport and definitely worth a visit if you have an hour of free time.

Yelp
Very informative tasting. We didn't do the full tour, but instead walked in to find someone who could give us a taste of some of the worlds best whiskeys (including a one time winner of world's best) that you can't find anywhere else, while explaining the history of the distillery and whiskey generally in Tasmania. The decor is charming, and we had the place all to ourselves (I think other guests do the tour). It's possible it gets crowded, as it's a little small, but with a small group it's quite pleasant.

Yelp
Really cool interiors - and a great story. They didn't even go to London because they didn't expect to win best whiskey, and they went overnight from not being profitable to getting sold right before Christmas 2016. Stop in, get some tastings in and learn about whiskey and the distilling process :-)

Yelp
Um, best whiskey in the world - fucking Obama drinks it - so yeah, it's good. It's still whiskey though, so if you don't like whiskey... Place looks very industrial from the outside and is an oasis inside - leather couches and warm and softly lit. $25 bucks to taste the three. Sounds expensive, but their best is $350 a bottle so on that scale it's a steal.
