Sully’s Shutters in Quincy | Eater Boston

"After 84 years in operation and three generations of ownership, Sully’s at 28 Chestnut St. in Quincy has closed its doors; open since the end of Prohibition, the storied dive bar served its final pint after owner Brian Sullivan said business had been slow due to changing times and demographics, and his wife Patty attributed the closure to the changing landscape of the city. New developments have reshaped the block—West of Chestnut opened across the street with several restaurants, retail spaces, and residences, and there’s speculation an East of Chestnut development may eventually occupy Sully’s side of the street. Quincy Mutual Fire Insurance purchased the building that housed the bar, and the company’s vice president, Kevin Meskell, declined to comment on what’s next for the property." - Terrence Doyle

Google
Hung out with some friends for a couple hours. Didn’t get a chance to eat a it was late so went to the peanut 😂 I spent no money as I had water. I thought the service was noticeably efficient and good as the bar never seemed packed and I like the rule of once you get your drink you leave the bar area. Nice Patio area and games inside.

Google
Sully's is the BEST! If you want to go to a bar that feels like a hole-in-the-wall that only YOU know about with the atmosphere of a lively sports bar, YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH SULLY'S. Whether it's a drink from the bar from bartenders that make you feel like you belong or the multiple rooms where your group can get away from the main area... maybe you want to go to the room to play shuffleboard or skee-ball... maybe you want to go to the room with pop-a-shot and darts... or maybe you want to stay in the main room with TVs all over, a foosball table, arcade games, the jukebox, and more. Oh, and if you're hungry, you can even order from Wingstop, next door, and have some wings delivered. This is the bar where you can go for just one beer and watch one quarter of the game or bring a crowd and stay all night. Try it!

Google
Went here on 11/7, god forbid you stand next to the bar after getting your drink. Male bartender with long hair alone made me hate this place. Fire him and I’ll be back! All of my friends are in agreement, that guy SUCKS.

Google
Fun neighborhood bar with cool staff that also serves food. Lots of bar games to keep you entertained (foosball, shuffleboard, darts, skeeball, various videogames) as well as plenty of TV's. Trivia on Tuesday nights is always packed. Just don't be a jerk and you'll have a great time.

Google
nice little dive bar - wish the darts were hard tip though. Had Malort, I liked the glasses for draft beer outta Balls canning jars. (I just wish the shots came in the smaller jars which they didn't) Saw some old friends. Bartender seemed rad. Cool back smoking deck. Not bad for Kansas.

Google
It is what it is...a nice neighborhood dive bar. Drink prices are reasonable but no food on the menu. Wing Stand is next door though. Fun but young wait staff... plenty of bar games to occupy yourself.

Google
RAOUL IS THE BEST!! The nicest bartender with amazing customer service; literally looked at my friend after he served us and I was like I haven’t this type of customer service in awhile. I asked for ice water and looked over and saw a jug and he was already putting ice in a cup bc he was like “but you asked for ice water”. I will definitely come back if I’m being taken care of by him! He’s the sweetest.

Google
Carrie really made a difference in our day today. We had to put our dog down at the vet up the street and decided to have some beers to take the edge off. She was the sweetest, most empathic person we’ve run in to in awhile. We really appreciate you.

Yelp
I have seen this place for many years just never stopped in. I stopped in on a Saturday night. First of all this is the dive bar definition. The floors of concrete, they have darts in the back and you get beer in a mason jar. This was loud and inviting. Such a fun little bar, with a lot of attitude!!

Yelp
We live Sullys. It's a great bar with great staff. They get packed on game nights. They are great for day hangs, my preference. They have darts, hoops, skee ball and table shuffle board. They have a back porch. Great Mission hang

Yelp
My friends and I were leaving Sully's after a fun night out. We stopped at the bathroom on the way out. I barely made it through the threshold of the bathroom door when I felt an arm around my neck. One of the barbacks placed me in a chokehold and was dragging me backwards out of the bathroom. Absolutely no warning or communication prior to this happening, he just came straight for my neck. I immediately left and told the door guy what happened. The assailant came running out and was attempting to excuse his behavior. He was making horrific homophobic comments and was unapologetic for his actions. I didn't receive any kind of consolation from any of the Sully's staff members. I left and will never return to that poor excuse of an establishment ever again. The barback can be described as below: Black, male, approx. 5'6"-5'7", mid 30's, short hair not recently cut, facial hair, thin/average build, brown eyes If you know this man, please report him. His actions were unacceptable and action should be taken. I have every right to call the police and file a report for aggravated assault using excessive force coupled with a hate crime. Shame on you.

Yelp
great local place for beer and atmosphere! Friendly staff, good music, and great for live sports!

Yelp
We came here to watch the Chiefs game last week. As a whole we had a pretty good experience and there are tons of TV's which make it the perfect place to watch sports. I didn't get anything to drink but most of our friends got beers and were surprised at how cheap they were. They were pleased with the amount and cost of the beer as well as the selection. We were a little confused about the lack of staff and it took us a bit to realize that they only two people working were working behind the bar. Once we figured that out it was fine but we definitely sat around waiting for someone to come to our table to start a tab. Not sure if that is just a game day thing or if it's always like that. The food situation was a bit odd. They have a relationship with Wing Stand next door, which is cool but the whole process of ordering and getting food was confusing. I'm this this will sound nit picky but you order food off a QR code (totally fine!!!) but it is confusing if they bring the food or if you have to get it. Either way is fine but it was just confusing. One table told us they had to go get it then another told us it was delivered. Our food ended up getting delivered which was nice. But they forgot napkins and utensils. No worries but Sully's didn't have any and I guess they don't carry that stuff. So after the convenience of having it delivered, we had to go get a bunch of stuff anyway. Overall our experience was good but we felt kind of dumb spending so much time figuring things out. It just didn't feel as simple as it should have been to get beer and food. It isn't the having to get off my butt that bothered me more the lack of understanding from customers what was going on as many people around us were confused.

Yelp
This is one of our my favorite bars to hangout at with our friends. We come here all the time. So like any other night, we were meeting up with some friends to celebrate his birthday. We got there around 10pm our friends were already sitting at a table hanging out. Last night one of the staff members came up to our table (black male) and told one of my friends "don't not vape in here, you get one warning" in a very hostile manner (not sure if he was just having a bad night or what was going on) I was shocked because it felt like he was discriminating my one friend because everyone else sitting at that table had their vapes out on the table. My other friend even had a vape in his hand while my other friend was getting singled out and being told not to vape. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE! If you have a whole table full of people and full of vapes on the table or in their hand and you single one person out... its giving discrimination Sully's.. Hold all people accountable to your rules don't just single one person out of the group out.

Yelp
Looking for a post-college bar with a young professional vibe? Look no further than Sully's! This place is always a lot of fun. They cater to a young crowd but not a drunken sloppy mess like some bars. They have games like pop-a-shot, ski ball, and Golden Tee which is a great way to settle bets with your buddies. Prices are always very reasonable, and bar staff is super friendly. One of my favorite bars in KC!

A W.

Yelp
Great bar with reasonable prices. The bathrooms were clean and well kept. They are sometimes out of certain drinks on their specials board, but it's not the worst thing. They have a partnership with a local business for food, but sometimes they forget items and it can be challenging to find someone to help.

Yelp
I've lived by Sully's my entire life and had never gone! Obviously I probably wouldn't have ever gone before the age of 21, but still... Sully's is pretty much exactly what you would expect! A small, hole in the wall bar with some arcade games and cheap drinks. That's really all I need! The bartender was very friendly and the place hasn't been very crowded either time that I've been, but I haven't yet gone on a weekend. The games are fun and they do have snacks that i'll need to check out! It's a nice little place very close to home.

Yelp
Convenient neighborhood bar with good prices and selection, typical sports bar vibe, not super divey. Walkable from nearby apartments. Quick service. Has a few games, including foosball, a golf game, and a couple others. Seems to be packed most nights of the week. Street parking

Yelp
This has become my After work stop lately. Sailor Jerry's- Good service (Jen is great)- Juke box that I can play from my phone- No obnoxious people-

Kelsie M.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday to watch college football. Asked if a tv could be changed to the game I wanted to watch and was told no, the tv's were spoken for. Fair enough. The bartender then proceeded to change both the tv's I had inquired about to different games. Two tv's next to each other were on the same game. After seeing this, at halftime, I asked if a tv in the corner- where no one was sitting - could be changed. She still said no, "someone" was watching it (the same game on 75% of the screens). Clearly not everyone is welcome here.

Yelp
Great deck! Great pizza. Friendly and fast service. Best neighborhood sports and relaxing place to go.

Yelp
Sullys is a great neighborhood bar. We visit to play trivia on Tuesdays and the servers are nice, the space big enough to always find a table, and the trivia fantastic! The bar itself is kind of a hole in the wall but I love that. It has a very comfortable vibe. I'm a little sad though because they used to have free popcorn and it has recently disappeared.

Yelp
Dive bar. Some tasty snacks. Super cheap drinks. Shuffleboard. Darts. Go.

Yelp
I find it funny that the owner of this place has such a low opinion of his own business ratings that he has his employees write reviews to boost them. Check the one 3 down by Jacob. That guy works there and was told by the owner along with the rest of the staff to write their own 5 star reviews (I overheard them talking about it one day along with how dumb he is as they skim money from the drawer). Also check the not recommended reviews. There's two other employees 5 star ratings. At one time I really like this place, but the pretty bartender who once served me after work on Thursday afternoons is no longer there. I'm guessing that's because of the raving lunatic general manager named Carrie. She is awful. She gossips about her co-workers and customers in front of the entire bar. One minute she seems happy go lucky, but in a second she can turn crazy if you say what she considers the wrong thing. Maybe she's bipolar. She should look into meds for that. The rest of the staff is just lazy. Lots of standing around goes on. And it is true that you have to be a regular to get any kind of decent service. They will not leave the bar to wait on you. I will not be returning. I'm not going to patronize a place that I don't know if my bill along with tip is also going in their greedy pockets.

Yelp
Great dive joint, great drink specials, atmosphere is laid back, has games too, only draw back is parking

Yelp
After being away for about 11 yrs. I moved back into the neighborhood about a year ago to find what used to be called "JJ's Other Place" to this. I meet my lil cousin here from time to time because this seems to be his Go to Bar"... When I firsted walked in I was taken back (in a good way) how they updated, cleaned & changed the atmosphere & added an outside patio area.. They have good drink & beer specials, cheap bar food (Aps),lot of games, TV's & social activities..Not a bad place to catch up with friend for a happy hour .... But! That where it ends. The service you get is sub-standard. The attitude you get is sour Its like a burden to them to serve from time to time & if I ever find one them up-beat & smiling, It would be like witnessing Bigfoot or Lochness! It doesn't exist I know there is not a whole lot of casual dive bars in Mission..So, I guess that seems to give them a free pass on how they treat customers.. .Apparenly, You have to be one of their regulars or just be a part of the new young "disrespectful" generation to enjoy this place ...too which, I am neither. Other than going for an early happy hour..You can have the rest.

Yelp
My favorite bar. Chuck and Jen always take care of me. Patrons are friendly. Games are fun to play. I've done dates here, met friends to watch games, and even feel comfortable to stop by solo. Highly recommend and am sad to move away.

Yelp
Last night was my husband and I decided to try out this bar for the 2nd time this month. Again, we were let down by the complete lack of service provided by the employees working there. On our first visit we walked into the bar and were carded. The guy carding us asked for our ID's and really didn't make eye contact with us or welcome us. Whatever, it happens. We sat down at a booth by the front window. We noticed that the bartenders were walking around and taking orders so were unsure of whether or not we should approach the bar to order for ourselves. The place is pretty large and separated into sections so I didn't understand whether they were short staffed or lacking servers completely. Id like to add though that the place really wasn't that busy. After a solid awkward 15 minutes we decided to go across the street to brew grille (we had much better luck there). I liked the layout of sully's, the location, and the small town vibe it has so last night we decided to give it another go...maybe the first night was just an off night, right? We got to the bar around 7:39 hoping to get some appetizers and drinks before going bowling across the street. We weren't carded when we came in and just took a seat at a booth. The place maybe had 5 small parties of people in there totaling about 20 or so customers. The customers seemed like regulars. I guess that's the thing at sully's, gotta be a regular before you can get served???? We sat for 10-15 minutes and tried to approach the bar but every time we did the bartender left to take a customer's order. We just felt awkward. Had we been greeted by a single employee things would have been different. We won't be returning. Apparently, the place doesn't need any new customers.

Yelp
Tonight was my fifth visit to Sully's and as usual, after walking through the door my nose was assaulted with the disgusting stench of dirty bar. I bartended 6 years at a college bar, I know not every bar will be pristine and smell like roses, but this bar smells like garbage that has been allowed to sit, rot, and grow more garbage friends. Thankfully I grew nose blind quickly. And then was reminded why Sully's feels like "The Hawk" of Kansas City. My boyfriend and I proceeded to stand at the bar and wait for a drink without acknowledgement for a solid 15 minutes. At a busy bar this would be understandable if not acceptable. At a bar with 20 patrons, this is inexcusable. The female bartender was working her ass off but the male bartender was far more interested in socializing with regulars, and his behavior is a theme at every single one of our visits. It generally seems to take 4-5 people waiting for drinks before he decides to finally get off his ass and actually make a drink. He finally noticed us and made our drinks, but did not offer fruit with our mixed drinks. Awesome. Sully's also got rid of the dart boards up front (the only reason we came here) so we went to the game room in the back to play darts. Every single table within eye sight was covered in dirty glassware and empty plastic cups until 4 dart games in, I got annoyed and cleared them myself. There were also pieces of a broken beer bottle on the floor (just pieces, indicating it was partially cleaned up, but half assed). This place is more poorly managed than the college bars in Lawrence I've seen managed by 22 year olds. I love the young vibe and affordable pricing but dear lord please get your shit together or we will have to give up on this place.

Yelp
I like Sully's. It's close to my house, they have a bunch of TV's and the staff is always friendly ... so I keep coming back. The drink prices, when not on special, are a little steep for my taste and the food they have is bar food, but far from the best bar food I have had in KC. There are plenty of seats and, occasionally, live music from some great KC musicians. So I guess, for Mission, it's a pretty good neighborhood bar. Like I said, I like Sully's ... I just can't say I love it yet.
google avatar

Krista C.

Yelp
I love this bar. My friends and I came here for our first time last fall and had a great time. Now I go to Sully's almost every weekend and sometimes on weeknights. There is shuffleboard, darts, and plenty of TVs to keep you occupied while drinking. As previously mentioned, it's not obnoxious and is a nice local bar with a mixed crowd. Everyone here is friendly and the service is usually pretty good.
google avatar

Beth P.

Yelp
I always wanted to like Sully's more than I actually did, but they are a KU bar and a great place to watch the basketball games (get there early if you want a table, especially at the end of the season!). So I'd call it a 2-star bar with the basketball season bonus star. Drinks are pretty average dive bar fare. They have pizzas and a varying menu of frozen-then-fried appetizers (I don't think they have a real kitchen, so the appetizers vary depending on what appliances they have at the moment). Service can be hit or miss, especially when they find themselves overwhelmed during a game. Since it was right around the corner from our house, we always wished it had hit the spot a little better, but it was definitely our nearby go-to for games.
google avatar

Grac S.

Yelp
Im a small town girl that visited Sully's from IL. Besides their easy to look at appearances, the staff was down to earth, friendly and quick with my drink even though the place was filled with Chiefs fans. They didn't even judge me for sporting my Chicago Blackhawks hoodie! Prices for peppermint pattie shots were awesome, and my beer was nice and cold! I felt right at home at Sullys! I love the outdoor patio where i could drink and smoke! One of staff even helped me to patio as I had a cast on my leg :) Ill be back to Sullys next time im in KS :)
google avatar

Carla P.

Yelp
Staff is friendly! Happy hour is great, good is decent as far as bar food goes. Nice crowd, nice new back room and outdoor area! Great neighborhood bar!! Trivia on Tuesday nights and a good dirty martini!!
google avatar

Meghan K.

Yelp
This is a great bar for happy hour. They have decent drink specials, although their beer-on-tap list is a little short. They have a few games to play like shuffleboard, ski ball, and darts to name a few. Their food is pretty good, you definitely have to try the smoked wings! They are packed with buffalo and smoked flavor, although the skin is a little chewy. On Fridays they have $5 pizzas, which are a great happy hour snack. This bar is fun with a good amount of TVs.
google avatar

Jacob P.

Yelp
I used to come in here a long time ago when it was J.J.'s other place. stumbled in here not too long ago and found an entirely different place. This place has a ton of T.V.s for watching the games, darts, shuffle board. There are lots of things to do during half time. Bartenders were great, i can drink out on the back patio. will be back often. p.s. its a KU bar
google avatar

Kristen R.

Yelp
Favorite local KC dive / sports bar. Love the environment and feel of a local neighbor bar. Great selection of beers, including local beers, with good prices. Quality TVs, life size jenga, darts, foosball and shuffle board. Free trivia on Tuesday nights. Free popcorn too!
google avatar

Larissa S.

Yelp
I am a sucker for any place that serves their drinks in Mason Jars. Not to mention, it has the local bar vibe that says "If you come often enough, they will know your name!" We had a great summer beer and lingered to people watch. This is definitely not my norm for a bar scene, but it was an experience, and I would definitely return. They have tons of TVs, games, and lots of room for groups. This would make a great place for happy hour or a last stop at the end of the evening! Not mention, it is pretty much walking distance from my house! I am glad to know its there!

Liz P.

Yelp
Sully's is a great place for some reasonably priced drinks. The beers are big and the mixed drinks are strong. It is a fun place to watch games, play some Shuffleboard or darts, do their Tuesday night trivia, or just catch up with friends while listening to some music. They did a remodel and changed ownership a few years back and is a big upgrade (so if you haven't been in a few years, it's worth coming back.) We've always had great service and a fun time at Sully's. Better prices on drinks than other places in the area like The Bar and The Peanut. Definitely think of Sully's as a bar and not a restaurant. The food is not good-- I recommend grabbing Longboard's across the street before heading to Sully's for a fun night of drinks.
google avatar

Derek S.

Yelp
Great neighborhood bar. Tons of TVs. Shuffleboard, darts, golden tee. A decent enough beer selection for a bar like this. Nice digital jukebox. Here's the best part: the bartenders. They are so nice and make an effort to know your name. They could up their food game a little bit, though.
google avatar

Jenn T.

Yelp
Love this place! The mason jars really make it a unique experience. This is my fave Mission bar. There are a lot of ppl ages 21-30, nice bartenders, shots listed, mason jars, ect!

Courtney G.

Yelp
Absolute best neighborhood bar. Big and serves popcorn. Love going to play darts and get a snack.
google avatar

Thorsten F.

Yelp
My favorite bar in Mission! The place has darts, pool, shuffle board, that table top touch screen video game thing, and a juke box. What more could you ask for in a bar? I love the chilled jars the beer is served in, and the atmosphere was fun and welcoming. Me and my friends go to this place all the time. Plus, it's a nice counter-balance to all the surrounding K-State bars.. (booooo)
google avatar

Perry B.

Yelp
After 3 visits here in the past 6 months, I can say the experience is consistent, warm, cozy, and downright unique. It feels like a neighborhood hangout which is nice to see. Beer in freezing mason jars! What could be better? There is ample space. The clientele is 20s to 40s on rhe weekend so it's super super fresh. Come here for a lax night.

Shane F.

Yelp
I'll start with the positives. Chill place, music isn't loud so you can chat. The service at the bar was fast, so that was great. They also have a lot of games to play (darts, shuffleboard, jenga..). Now for the bad parts(2). A friend got up to use the bathroom and while she was away they came and took her 1/2 full beer, which is weird. I was sitting at another table so I personally couldn't stop the guy, but there were other people at that table. Also, at the end of the night we had 1 last shot on the table, and we were waiting for the person to come take it (birthday boy). An employee who was cleaning off tables grabbed the shot and we told him "that guy *pointing to him* is going to take that," and the employee replied with "nah, it's closing time." So I should be giving this 2 stars, but the fast bar service made it bearable. Not sure I'll return to this place.
google avatar

Keli W.

Yelp
We frequent trivia at this Sully's location and really enjoy the vibe and kind wait staff. Drinks are affordable and there is free popcorn. What more can you ask for in this great dive bar off Johnson?
google avatar

Justin H.

Yelp
It's a bar. They have drinks. Drinks make you a better person. Carrie is really good at making and serving those drinks.
google avatar

Maria P.

Yelp
Sully's is pretty awesome. I went there for the first time to watch the KU basketball game. All the TV's were showing it, the crowd was very into the game, and it was a good place to be. The service from the bartenders was good as well and the drink prices were awesome!
google avatar

Aubrey F.

Yelp
We love Sully's! We live down the street and love being able to drink with friends at our place and walk to and from without driving! If I made a list of everything I want in a bar, Sully's hits every one. It is small. Not obnoxious. A great alternative to Power and Light! They are a KU bar (ROCK CHALK!), good specials, shuffleboard, pool, darts, and tvs. You can pay to play any song you can imagine (I admit, I paid $1 to play How Bazaar by OMC). I also love those screens you can play games on with friends, which they have. I have been there with a big group and the bartenders were super nice and patient. I think the mason jar thing is cool. At least they aren't disposable plastic cups. We love the vibe and are glad it is in walking distance. Will continue to give this local bar our business... within reason ;).
google avatar

Jonathan C.

Yelp
Friendly enviroment, great service, decent selection of whiskey/bourbon. If you're in the KC area I highly reccomend them if you're a casual drinker.
google avatar

Kaylynne B.

Yelp
I love this spot. It's the best local bar in my opinion. Great service and prices. Lots of activities and sports on all the time.
google avatar

CJ D.

Yelp
LOVE this place!!! This is my favorite place to watch Royals games during the summer!! Drinks are served in frosty mason jars and the staff are upbeat and fun. Awesome neighborhood bar!
google avatar

Matt T.

Yelp
The reason i enjoy this spot is it's a great place to go in the early evening to sit have a couple of cold drinks and a conversation while keeping up with the game on one of the tv's. The snacks are nothing special as are the prices but the cozy dive feel is great.
google avatar

Michelle R.

Yelp
I like playing the games and eating the free popcorn! Great place to watch sports, it's my local bar

R. B.

Yelp
We LOVE this bar!! This is our start point, our end point and just our all round hang out point! They have lots of fun games to play including Shuffle Board! Awesome! Lots of flat screen tvs and they always have all the games or big events on. We came up for all the KU basketball games last season. Crowd is always friendly & there is a general good vibe feel. Bartenders are great!! Highly recommend this place!!!

Yelp
Sully's is a good time. Stopped on during a storm and prices are great and it was nice and calm. Great local bar. Definitely going back

Adam L.

Yelp
They did a good job when they opened up. Shuffleboard, darts, pool, new patio that you can drink on. The beer is severed in mason jars which is pretty cool. They got more/new TV's as well. Overall I would say it is an improvement over JJ's and I am a fan.
