Sultana - Review - Menlo Park - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Sultana in Menlo Park isn’t flashy, but flash isn’t what brings you there—it’s the food. The menu leans Turkish, with dishes like the divan kebab—lushly spiced beef and lamb rolled in lavash and served over garlicky yogurt—and a smoky baba ghanoush that could easily replace your main. The white tablecloths and wood-paneled dining room feel old-school, and the back patio is one of the better under-the-radar spots to eat outside in Menlo Park. It’s ideal for a relaxed weeknight lunch or dinner." - Gabi Moskowitz

We love this place — incredibly impressed without exception. Delicious and flavorful food, a really fun back patio with a delightful waterfall and other sweet decorations, and unfailing fantastic service. Highly recommend (for lunch or dinner), including a sophisticated atmosphere for special occasions

Have lunch at this restaurant a few times with colleagues and the latest visit was with a colleague who is from Turkey. The food tastes great and the portions are reasonable. In addition, they also provide free flow of bread and naan with olive oil dip that is so good.

Sweet & cozy restaurant with a nice atmosphere. Excellent service! The staff were courteous, polite and very attentive. Water was always filled! Their Spanakopita was amazing. The feta rolls were ok, came out almost room temp but pretty good. The bread they serve is also quite delicious. The Musaka was bland sadly. The chicken kabobs were juicy but needed a bit more seasoning. I would order that again. They were kind enough to change my rice to Quinoa. The rice was actually quite good! The place is nice for gatherings and plenty of parking spaces! They also have an outdoor area in case you have doggies. Will return for the other dishes. I still recommend this place, just need a little more tweaking on the food seasoning.

Google
Had a lovely time here. I enjoyed the lamb quite a bit, and the chocolate baklava ended the meal off perfectly. The service was great, the location was populated but not crazy. I would definitely go back!

Google
The food was decent. The service was very good. The staff members were respectable and quick. I tried the pomogranate lamb kabob and it was pretty good. Their hot tea was very well brewed as well. I recommend this restaurant, and I will be back.

The chicken kebab was perfect. Salmon was okay. Staff was great. Chicken reminded me of this restaurant in Santa Barbara called Zaytoon. Beautiful

Google
We came in for a late lunch during the weekend. We took only vegetarian options. The red lentil soup was absolutely delicious. The bread they serve is really good, maybe even too good, because you just can’t stop eating it. Everything in the combo appetizer was wonderful. We took the veggie musakka “to go” and it was also really nice. Service was excellent. We couldn’t ask for more.

Google
They have a nice shaded patio in the back that has flowers and vines hanging. It's really pretty. We ordered wraps, one with falafels and eggplant and the other with a beef and lamb mix. Both where really tasty and ingredients were fresh. I do wish they gave a bit more fries. They have nice looking sweets on display. We were too full to partake. Very clean and nicely decorated restaurant. Oh the bread they bring out with olive oil and balsamic vinegar is really nice!

Yelp
Always amazing customer service! Ordered a Chicken Wrap, Pomogranate Salad, and Fries for take out- so good I forgot to snap a photo! OH!! How could I forget the Chocolate Baklava and Macaroon? 10/10!

Yelp
Authentic Mediterranean cuisine located in downtown Menlo Park. From hummus to seafood kabob, everything is delicious and healthful. The staff is very attentive, friendly, and polite. I loved the Turkish tea, which came in its own pot and complemented the food perfectly. The restaurant's large interior space allows for well-spaced seating. For parking, skip the busy El Camino Real and use the easier back parking lot!

Yelp
I came with my friend and we tried different things. First started with lentil soup and lahmacun as an appetizer. It was delicious. I tried pomegranate kebab. I really liked it. My friend went with regular Adana kebab. We sat outdoors. Service was good. They have indoor dining available as well. Plenty of parking at the back side of restaurant

Yelp
Had a wonderful birthday dinner here with a group of 9! The service was attentive and they refilled our water 5+ times. The pomegranate beef plate was delicious. The tangy yogurt sauce was something I've never had before. Definitely try this! Falafel appetizer was also solid but pretty standard.

Yelp
I ordered a few dishes from this place, all of other food is good but the bread taste like cardboard, dried and old. I ordered the food on Monday for lunch.

Yelp
Went here for a lunch on Saturday afternoon. Restaurant wasn't very busy. They have a nice little patio with outdoor seating where we sat down. We ordered some sodas, the banaganush, the combo shish and the pomegranate kebab. With the appetizer we also got a plate with bread and some olive oil with herbs. Really like the babaganush, great texture and delicious together with the bread. The entrees arrived a little bit later. I enjoyed the shish combo. Lamb skewer tasted a little bit dry, but well seasoned. The chicken was good as were the veggies. Presentation of the plate is a bit simple, I would have liked to have some sort of sauce with it or dip, but overall still great. My wife loved the pomegranate kebab, I tried a little bit and it was tastier than my dish. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Would definitely come back here.

Yelp
Friendly, clean, and worth the visit. There's a front room and nice partially enclosed back patio with a fountain. They start you off with a crunchy bread and a hard pita bread. The dipping sauce is an olive oil and herb blend. It has a slightly salty taste that entices your tongue. I tried the pomegranate lamb kabob stuffed with spinach and topped with pomegranates, served with rice and yogurt. The picture is as good as it tastes. The lamb was tender and not gamey. The pomegranate added a nice flavor and texture. Dip the lamb in the yogurt for a smooth texture and savory taste. Follow up with a bite of rice to compliment the flavor of the meat. There are kabobs, wraps, plates, and salads. It's a good family restaurant and the service is attentive and friendly. I highly recommend a visit. I'll see you there. I'm going to try more dishes. This is my rating system to help you gauge my ratings Anything under three stars is not worth mentioning. Meh. *** stars - Good overall. Some aspects are above the notch: food, service, and or ambiance. Worthy of a visit. **** Stars - Exceptional, short of perfect. ***** Stars - Perfect in all aspects. Food quality, Service, Ambiance

Yelp
Sultana Mediterranean is a rustic Turkish restaurant with a spacious interior and an outdoor patio. My favorite dishes were the appetizers, and we started with the Combo Appetizer Plate, which came with hummus, babaganush, tabbouleh, ezme (walnut red pepper paste), garbanzo salad, 2 dolmas, and 2 falafels, all of which went nicely with the basket of warm pita bread and soft slices of Turkish bread on the side. The Grilled Octopus came with two tentacles served over an arugula salad; and a favorite dish of mine was the Lahmacun, a thin, crispy flatbread topped with minced spiced lamb and served with greens, onions, tomatoes, and lemon, all of which added a refreshing contrast. For our mains, we had the Seafood Kebab, two skewers of salmon and shrimp, served with a warm mixture of spinach, garbanzos, and farro; and the Lamb Kebab, three skewers of tender lamb cubes, served with roasted zucchini/cauliflower and bulgur cooked with tomatoes. Overall, the food here was delicious--the appetizers were beautifully-presented, while the kebab plates were more rustic, but everything came at a good value and with friendly service!

Yelp
Very good musakka, full of flavor and a good portion, but served lukewarm and with bland white rice and wilted salad. My son also really enjoyed his lahmajun which i ordered to go. The outdoor covered patio with gurgling fountain is quaint and tucked behind El Camino Real with a little parking lot. Service left a little something to be desired. I walked into the restaurant, used the restroom and peeked into the dining room before I got attention of someone in the kitchen to ask if restaurant was open. The hostess/server was sweet but not very attentive. I think I caught the staff at an off time (2 pm on a Saturday afternoon). Would Come back for a long lunch and wine with a girlfriend because the charming outdoor space and musakka are better than average Peninsula Mediterranean kabob places.

Yelp
Genuine and really good. A must go. Went there with a customer. Ordered the appetizer plate. Every one of the items was excellent. The chicken kabobs were awesome. Try it

Elle P.

Yelp
Very friendly place with quick service. We arrived there for a mid week early dinner with no prior reservation, and the place had plenty of open tables, which started to fill up later. We saw several people coming in to pick up their orders. The food was good, but not super amazing. Overall we had a positive experience and might come again when in the area.

Yelp
Very good food, good prices, nice location. We celebrated my friend's event there and everyone was happy. Will definitely cone back

Yelp
When in Rome- I say when I order Mediterranean food every chance I get while visiting Northern California for work. Ordered this through DoorDash- it was true to description and taste was flavorful and on point! Ordered the chicken shish labor- it's paired with rice and salad and fresh pita- it's perfect for midday lunch or dinner. Sometimes food doesn't travel well- not the case here- always arrives hot and fresh!

Yelp
Very sweet and friendly customer service with decent food, some dishes better than others. Their lamb pizza Turkish style is a winner--soooo good, excellent robust flavors, complex and flavorful, one slice stacked on top of the other. Loved it, not gamey and just full of what you'd expect from a Turkish type lamb dish. Their arugula goat cheese pomegranate salad is fresh with ingredients that taste just plucked from the garden, a tangy and sweet dressing not doused too much. A complementary bread basket with a herbacious olive oil sesame seed dip. Their grilled ocopus super good with a tasty chimichurri sauce, diced parslely and onions. The ocopus charred at the tips. The salmon I wasn't so keen about, nothing intrinsically wrong with it, just kinda bland and a tad overcooked. Their hot black tea really good and hit the spot on a cold day. Very good casual light lunch with prices totally reasonable. /the interior is bomb, super cozy and artistic with phenomenal artwork, very civilized not loud music blaring, quiet hushed tones. Love love.

Yelp
Great service, fairly quiet inside, plenty of space inside and outside for small tables as well as large groups (at least two large parties while we were there on a Thursday night). Food was excellent. My Adana Kebab was packed some heat but was pleasantly fiery. Pomegrante kebab, one of their signature dishes, did not disappoint. I'll be heading back there when I get another chance to visit the Menlo Park area.

Yelp
Sultana Mediterranean Menlo Park CA Fri 6/3/22 © Banal business lunch, quite prosaic. Gotta ad hoc meet with 2 visiting business partners, shall we make it fun?! Initially had reservations for another restaurant downtown Menlo Park on Santa Cruz Ave, yet did not realize they close down in afternoons, so... ad hoc meeting at ad hoc chosen Sultana on El Camino! If you walk out of Sultana in the back, you're practically on Santa Cruz Ave. Restaurant choices for late afternoon lunch between hours of 2-5pm are limited. We're flexible guys, will make it work 100%. Long story short, it worked out! Landed on the back patio. To make it clear, this is a casual place with average crowd. Short wine list and limited beers, no cocktails, so we skipped on imbibing all together. Specific tasks discussed, tech action items assigned to my engineers, processes defined & resolutions found. Couple hours flew by very fast! Below I list our order. Snapped photos of only select dishes. Didn't want to overwhelm friends with excessive content upload:) Start with Cold Mezzes Hummus Babaganush Tzatziki Humus | Garbanzo Garlic Lemon juice EVVO $8 Babaganush | Roasted creamy eggplant w/ lemon, olive oil, garlic & yogurt $10 Tzatziki | diced Cucumbers mixed w/ garlic yogurt & dried mint $10 Moving on to Hot Mezze Grilled octopus Grilled Octopus | Chickpeas Radish Chimichurri 15 Main course *Entrée Rack of lamb Pomegranate kebab Combo shish Rack of Lamb - Grilled tender lamb racks served with rice and veggies $35 Pomegranate Kebab - Ground lamb and beef stuffed with spinach topped over garlic yogurt pomegranate sauce & seeds served w/ rice $22 Combo shish | Lamb cop shish, Chicken Kebab, served w/ rice & roasted vegetables $22 Rack of Lamb is mine. I enjoy my meats, guilty;) Pomegranate kebab, yeah if you like to chew on the seeds:) looks great I concur! Love pomegranate taste but whadda you do with them seeds LOL spew them out? Desserts Macaroons with chocolate Turkish coffee Chocolate Baklava with icecream Yeppidy yep Turkish coffee looks and tastes strong! Dark choc baklava and icecream, who doesn't love it? Would you like some? Oh my goodness! Macaroon with chocolate! Bite me! Gone in one bite:) Food was good but service kinda sucked because Babaganush was very late and Red Lentil soup never arrived. Am I going to let this detract from my experience? Heck, no! I'm a simple positive guy from the moment I step into any establishment, I choose to go with the flow and be happy about everything. Share a secret? Kindness always goes a long way. Holding onto anger and resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies. I have a great time and I leave happy! *The moon went hiding Stars quit shining Rain was driving, thunder, lightning You wrecked my whole world when you came And hit me like a hurricane! Yelp
The patio is delightful and the food is average tho tasty, but for the prices it's not worth it. $24 ish for a combo kebab which came with three minuscule skewers (large toothpicks)!of tiny pieces of meat. Hard pass.

Yelp
I love Mediterranean cusine. When I came here with my friends it was pretty, it was pretty empty. And I thought to myself, "uh oh should we be concerned?" Turns out no because it was around Ramadan meaning that everyone was going to come here for the delicious food after sunset. I know that I did not get to take pictures if all the food we ate but I want to point bout dome wins. Their complimentary pita and bread with the olive oil and Za'atar seasoning (at least I think it was ) was a win and yes you heard right we got pita and bread. Two different types if bread. We also got an sampler with the babaganush, hummus, dolma, ezme, garbanzo salad, and falafels. Their falafel was excellent. Perfect crispness and the chickpea filling was seasoned to perfection. Dolma was nice. Now babaganush is probably my favorite style if dip from Mediterranean cuisine, but I felt here it was just okay. But everything else was good. For my entree I got the divan. Which is a mix of beef and lamb meat wrap which I believe us baked and cheesevoutvon top with their yougrut sauce and spinach. It was enjoyable pretty good. I'm a pretty big guy and u thought it was not going to fill me, but it ended up being a good amount of food.

Yelp
MEDITERRANEAN is always a good idea! We had a lunch with the team and when I found out it was Mediterranean it was a YES!! Arrived and got seated outside in their park let! Got the pita bread for appetizers and it was fresh fresh! Then order the Seafood Salad for entree! It was so good ! Arugula with tomato and salmon and prawns on a kebab! So fresh and delicious ! Also ordered were the pomegranate salad, farro salad with chicken and the grilled salmon!! Will be back to try the meals !! Really good!!

Yelp
I had the LAHMAJOUN and the yogurt drink. They were wonderfully delicious. The service was excellent. this review requires 85 letters.

Yelp
The food and service made me feel right at home. I tried it out with the idea of eating healthy, but I kept going back because I wanted to!

Yelp
Ordering vegan online can be tricky, but due to the fact that I love oven baked stuffed eggplant I sometimes make an exception and order this vegetarian dish, Oman Bayilidi. It's so delicious and arrives quickly on DoorDash - delivery is closely. The food is consistently so yummy I keep coming back for more They also I include bread, which I always appreciate! Always deliciousness.
google avatar

Kevin D.

Yelp
Honestly the best hummus I have had in my life. Chicken skewers and eggplant were stars! Service was excellent - all the staff were kind. What I am most excited for is the weather to improve so I can enjoy their food on their cool lamp lit patio :)

Zaineb Q.

Yelp
Delicious food, nice ambience with indoor and outdoor options. Accommodating and friendly staff.

Bridgitte C.

Yelp
I just catered a party for 12 and Sultanta was excellent, the food, the value and especially the service! Veysel was impeccable We had plenty of food no need to worry about that, the delivery was perfectly timed, no hassles. Our guest were very impressed I would highly recommend this restaurant

Eric J.

Yelp
Chicken skewers are dryer than a cat's tongue. Salad not fresh. Kufta was ok. There are better options out there
google avatar

Tejaswini R.

Yelp
Sultana is our family fav for many years. Food , service , location all on point. Bonus points for always making both ya and our dog feel welcome . Service staff are so friendly and polite. My only suggestion is to add a few more vegetarian options on the menu . They do have a few now but still limited compared to meat options. Overall , whenever our family is looking for a local dinner option in Menlo , sultana is one of our top choices .

Hidayet K.

Yelp
Food was amazing specially Pomegranate kebab was wonderful !! Service was very very friendly. environment is so authentic !! highly recommended !!!
google avatar

Ajay C.

Yelp
The food was good but they have less vegetarian option. Try their Orzo rice, very rich with spices. Don't forget their hummus and pita bread.

Blossu S.

Yelp
All the 1 star reviews aren't true, I came here 5 times and I have never had a compliant. The food is good, the food tastes fresh, and it melts on your tongue. The servers are very nice, and they usually ask for your order very soon if it isn't busy. The place is very clean, the bathroom is also clean. There's no hair in the food, and if there is, its probably yours. The seats are clean, the waterfall is very nice, overall this place is amazing.
google avatar

Chrizelle V.

Yelp
The food was great and service was great. I love the dessert especially! The server who helped us was very accommodating and sweet. I would definitely come again!
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome place! I have now been here 3 times :) I always get the combo platter (different spreads with pita) and I've tried various dishes here such as shrimp kebab and chicken wrap. They also have vegan options which are great like the veggie mousakka. They have a lovely back patio which is perfect for either a small party or a large one. If you do choose to host your event here, I recommend Sunday's 2-4. There are not many other customers during the time and the staff is very attentive. They have a separate lunch and dinner menu. They do have great sangria ($12) as well as bottles of wine ($44 and up). They also have beer and champagne. I highly recommend this place, very flavorful foods!

Mike K.

Yelp
Went to Sultana for dinner, ordered Mediterranean Appetizer and it was excellent. Nice variety of different tastes and enough for 2 to share. The Lamb Kabobs were a huge disappointment. I asked for rare and the first order came out well done. The waiter replaced it with a new order that wasn't any better. I gave up after telling him it wasn't any better. Won't be going back.
google avatar

Jacqueline K.

Yelp
My family of 3 stopped by there today for a very late lunch/early dinner at 3 pm lol and the waiter was very nice and we enjoyed our meal a lot! (Or at least my husband and I did, as usual our toddler didn't eat anything aside from a bite of pita bread lol). We ordered the kofte (ground lamb/beef) and pomegranate (ground lamb/beef with spinach and pomegranate seeds). Both dishes were good but I really loved the pomegranate! From the description I didn't think I'd like the yogurt sauce that much but it was delicious and so savory and flavorful. The rice was really tasty as well. We popped in and out quickly for our meal but the ambiance is nice and seems like a good place to enjoy a meal and catch up with friends.

Yelp
Sultana Mediterranean was one of my first experiences with Turkish food about 12+ years ago. I remember the fusion of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food with kebabs, wraps, kofta and the use of yogurt, grape leaves and phyllo in many of their savory and sweet dishes which I loved . Sultana has a wonderful, covered patio area dining which makes for a relaxing and laid back experience. Simple and straightforward menu of cold and hot appetizers, wraps and entrees to choose from: H O T M E Z Z E Lahmacun - "lamb pizza" - ground, seasoned, lamb on a thin flatbread accompanied with mixed greens, onion and cilantro - nice to try 4/5 E N T R E E S Pomegranate kebab - grilled ground lamb and beef filed with spinach and rolled.. served with garlic yogurt and pomegranate sauce - delicious flavors, complimented with sweet (not tart) pom reduction so great with the accompanying rice 5/5 Seafood Brochette - seasoned salmon and shrimp on a skewer - friend said it was good 4/5 but wanted more of my dish D E S S E R T Knafeh and Baklava - knafeh is one of my favorite Middle Eastern desserts of shredded phyllo, cheese, sugar syrup and pistachios. Simple but has all the components of varying textures, sweet and savory that hits the spot! Love...it! Definitely stop here to enjoy good food, and leisurely, relaxed dining. By 1230, the patio was full (2 tables open outside the uncovered patio) but tables spaced comfortably and accordingly to CDC guidelines, staff wearing masks with plenty of lot parking

Yelp
Music, good turkish coffee and excellent service are extras after wonderful meal of mousaka, chicken curry, roasted veggies, warm fresh breads with herded olive oil. Also recommend salads and best falafel I've ever tasted. A treat from startc to finish. Also easy parking behind the building.
google avatar

Suni P.

Yelp
It's hard to find a variety of good vegetarian food. The baba ghanoush here was the best I ever had!! I could really taste all the smoky flavors. I ordered take out on a stormy day. My food was ready when I got to the restaurant.
google avatar

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
Wonderful food! I knew from the moment I walked in and got the wonderful aroma from the kitchen that the food was going to be delicious, and it did not disappoint. The staff gave gracious service. The atmosphere in the dining room was delightful. And in the ladies lavatory is the most beautiful baby changing table I have ever seen in any restaurant--real furniture and nice and clean. The atmosphere in the dining room is equally suitable for date night or for a family dinner including young children. Our friend who recommended this restaurant often brings his 6 year old son here.
google avatar

Merry K.

Yelp
I'm so glad this place is open for patio dining. We had our late lunch serenading by the sound of waterfalls in the background. For 1 hour, life feels normal again. Falafel Wraps It's satisfying and good. But that's about it! I still have my socks on at the first bite. Chicken Adana. Oh sooo good! Chickens are tender, juicy and very flavorful. Definitely lost one sock because of this dish. I am a sauce person, so I was looking for some kind of saucy goodness when eating it with their rice. Orange Blossom Pistachio Ice cream This made me lost the other sock. It's 79F now and that first bite of ice cream was definitely concluded our day in high note. Not too sweet with fragrant orange after taste and not too salty pistachio crumbs. Just in case you are wondering what is orange blossom flavor like, think orange, jasmine flower and vanilla have a serious entanglement. Got it?

Yelp
Best Turkish food outside of Turkey. Very fairly priced and the Turkish pizza (Lahmacun) was to die for.

Helen L.

Yelp
The salads are very fresh, dishes are good, I specially like the grilled octopus, recommend it.
google avatar

Yelp
y for lunch. They have a little outdoor area in the parking lot. Its covered enough that you don't feel like your ingesting carbon monoxide. The staff was good. I had the ribeye kabob. The taste was mild but good. The meat was a bit tough. There was a nice salad and rice. There are some items not on the menu that you can find online.
google avatar

Brandon L.

Yelp
Incredible Turkish cuisine and excellent staff - 8.6 / 10 Can't go wrong with a good Turkish pizza

taia E.

Yelp
We recently had Sultana cater the food for a graduation party. We were so pleased that we did. Everyone loved the food. We got many compliments. The food was delivered exactly at the time we had requested. Ordering was easy and we were able to make adjustments needed as the number of guests increased. We will certainly use them again in the future.

Yelp
I came here for lunch on Friday and it was good. A few years ago I used to be closer so I would frequent this place more often. On Friday it just so happened that I had to go to Menlo Park that day so I decided to go there for lunch. I met a co- worker there and we both enjoyed what we ordered. It was a hot day and go figure I still ordered red lentil soup. Well, what could I say I'm a soup person. I was glad I did, because it was good. I also ordered their delicious spanakopita. The person I was with ordered a beef and lamb entree I believe. They also have complementary bread. They have a cute outside setting. On that day we decided to dine outside. In the past I have also dined inside and it's comfortable, spacious and quiet. Inside or outside is nice. I didn't see any familiar faces, so I'm not sure if any of the people I used to see still work there. However, the service was good and our server was attentive. I definitely will go back and try either something new or dishes I have enjoyed in the past.

Yelp
Man, where do I start?! We came here last week to try their food, as for some reason they are highly rated on Yelp. The service was good until the lady took over... she was a bit dry. They food was flavorless, boring and pricey. And the worst of all... are you ready for it?! There were mice running on the wood railing right behind our heads! Grooooosssss! They have an open kitchen, no door I mean, and the mice were running in/out of that area. When we went outside, the bushes on the ground were filled with big ass rats. Scary and nasty! If we weren't in a group I would have just gotten up and left. That is so nasty! I will never come here again and advice you not to either. Yuck!
google avatar

Wendy V.

Yelp
I am sorry I did not take photos the food was visually beautiful. I had the vegetable moussaka, friends had salmon and lamb beautifully cooked and presented with pomegranate. And second the service was amazing friendly welcoming Such a wonderful small place if you are looking for amazing food NOT over salted oroiled but simply fresh And very kind staff
google avatar

El T.

Yelp
Excellent customer service, the food is tasty and very delicious, nice and chill place, I come here once a month, I recommend it to everyone. I recommend you trying the Lahmacun.

Yelp
Came here with friends and definitely enjoyed our dinner. We started with the cold combo appetizer which was great to share and also ordered the shrimp from the hot appetizer section. Shrimp with the sautéed onions and mushrooms was delicious! Our entrees were the Adana kebab and Divan - all of this ended up being the perfect amount for 5 of us. Only complaint was that we had asked the waiter whether we should get the chicken Adana and he said he preferred the beef/lamb version but didn't mention that it was the SAME kebab in the Divan! Why would we want to try the same kebab in both dishes? Other than this tho everything was great.
