The Story Behind Baker Betsy Gonzalez’s Southwest Atlanta Bakery and Bread Subscription Osono Bread | Eater Atlanta

"A tiny but mighty community-supported microbakery in Southwest Atlanta run by 24-year-old baker Betsy Gonzalez, it evolved from her stint at Little Tart Bakeshop and a formative apprenticeship across Europe into a full commercial operation squeezed into less than 100 square feet with a commercial oven, mixers, bench tables, and nearly 1,000 pounds of flour. The bakery centers on naturally leavened (sourdough) breads and three guiding philosophies: respect for old-world baking traditions, tangible support for regional agriculture, and direct collaboration with local farmers and millers. Ingredients are sourced deliberately—flour from Danielsville’s Day Spring Farm (organically grown and milled on site), stone-ground whole rye/whole wheat/spelt from Carolina Ground, and roller-milled bread flour from Lindley Mills—so each loaf reflects both craft and place. Offered as monthly and bi-weekly subscription packages (four loaves a month), the operation relies on curbside pickup coordination via Instagram and partner locations, and Gonzalez emphasizes that the bakery’s growth and sustainability are owed to the community of customers, growers, and collaborators who supported her from the start." - Gina Yu

I was in costco sand city the cart that belond to the person delivering the bread was in the way i moved it so i could get trough the delivery guy called me mensa but i wasn't the one with tattoos all over my face then i was walking my dogs in watsonville on the levee and saw this

Google
This is the BEST seeded baguette I've ever had and the only problem is that they're hard to find because even if I go to a store like Safeway that I know carries SUMANO bread they won't necessarily have the seeded baguette. I think they only give each store one or two and I'm not sure why because it is definitely THE BEST SEEDED BAGUETTE and I wish they had a lot more available and at more locations. I can honestly say that ever since my family and I tried this seeded baguette it's the ONLY baguette we want and I've driven to multiple stores in one day looking for it. Sumano, please send more seeded baguettes to the east bay area (Berkeley through Richmond) ASAP! PLEASE!!

Google
This is the best sliced sourdough bread I've ever had. It makes the best toast. Cheese toast ten out of ten, cinnamon sugar toast ten out of ten, peanut butter toast ten out of ten. Good job

Whoever the hell is driving this delivery truck need to be fired. He got off at 101 and Tennant in Morgan Hill and made a right onto Tennant RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. I had to lock up my brakes...I'm only doing 35mph. Maybe he thought if he jumped out to the far left lane (I was in the right lane) he would be able to avoid me t-boning him by inches...? Luckily, I didn't hit him but I'm a business owner with a fleet and I know horrible insurance can be so I wanted to WARN YOU. 1.9.25 850am

Although it is great to buy sourdough bread with an independent bakery I am not a fan of their bread making process, which results in lack of depth of flavour and crust which is very hard the next day. I appreciate that other may love Sumanos Bakery bread, but as a bread maker myself, this bakery is not for me.

JD G.

Google
Hands down the best quality in sourdough bread! 🍞 delicious taste and I appreciate the consistency, never disappointed with my purchases. I purchase it at Safeway but they don't carry it in the Discovery Bay or Brentwood areas, so I have to drive to Pleasanton or Dublin for it. It's worth the drive.

Google
Sumanos Sourdough is the best sourdough I have found and I have tasted a lot of SD breads. Unfortunately, we only get it when we make a trip to Monterey or Santa Cruz because Sacramento is too far for them to distribute it here. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. For second place, Truckee Sourdough isn't too bad which we can get here. But Sumanos is the best in my opinion. Safeway, Whole Foods, many stores in the area carry it.

Google
This bread is the best thing ever made!! Best in the Bay Area for sure. Make you you stop by the bakery or go to any major supermarkets to get your fresh baked goods!

Yelp
Watsonville sourdough may be the best sourdough available. Available at Costco and most grocery stores.

Yelp
Sumano's sourdough is hands down one of the best I've had. The crust is perfectly crisp with that signature artisan crackle, and the inside is chewy, airy, and full of rich, tangy flavor. You can tell it's made with care--not that rushed, bland stuff. It toasts beautifully and pairs with everything from butter to avocado to soup. It's a true staple in our kitchen now. If you're into real sourdough, this one's worth seeking out.

Yelp
My local church gives away sumanos and I find it hard to decide to get it, for free. Hands down the worst bread bakery I've ever tasted. Palermo's in Monterey is legitimate bread, but impossible to find in stores. Up north there are a few decent bread bakeries, but you'll need to re-mortgage your house upon purchase. So basically here in between San Jose and Monterey, we are stuck with this pathetic black hole of flavorless dead bread.

Yelp
The most delicious sourdough in the Central Coast and SF Bay Area. You will find them in most grocery stores. Try the Watsonville seeded baguette and sourdough loaf

Yelp
I just tried their nine grain bread for the first time. By far it is some of the tastiest bread I have ever had. Highly recommended. I read some bad reviews, I think if they filled the bread with 10 different kinds of preservatives, it would never grow mold. But alas, this is fresh bread and intended to be sold that way. It's like a good song, it doesn't last forever!

Sanyu S.

Yelp
Sumanos Bread is delicious and made with simple, high-quality ingredients. It's a bit pricey, but the taste and quality make it worth every penny! It molds easily because it doesn't have all those unnecessary preservatives so it's best to freeze it if you don't finish it within 3 days.
google avatar

Roxy R.

Yelp
My hubby and I only buy this bread! It's amazingly fresh and only has just the ingredients the breads needs! Best sourdough in the region!

Yelp
I cannot let another decade go by without posting my 15 Thumbs Up for Sumano's. I've lived local to the bakery for decades, and sometimes forget to appreciate how fantastic all their breads are, but especially the simple sliced sourdough I get at Raley's. What really sends the message Home is when I am talking to someone out of the area in casual conversation and they bring up the bakery; "oh Watsonville, yeah isn't that where that fabulous Sumano's Bakery is"?!?! And noteworthy is that a couple of them are very very discerning food snobs. So Sumano Bakery is known far and wide and worthy of all praise. ‍‍

Yelp
I really like their bread, and I buy it at Safeway in Prunedale normally. It's always growing mold on it 3 days later. It happens every time. I have cuban sandwiches setup tonight, bought this bread thursday and it already has mold sunday. I don't understand this. I have to freeze it? I might as well buy the preservative filled fluffy stuff for half the price. Not saying this place is the problem but they should look into why this has happened to me 8 times in the last year.

Phil N.

Yelp
By far the best sourdough bread I have ever bought. We get it at Costco in Gilroy or South San Jose. It is always incredibly fresh and soft, baked that morning. Sumano's is delicious.

Carmen F.

Yelp
Great fresh breads with a decent shelf life. I like the Sour dough anything!! It's been a family staple for years!! Thank you.
google avatar

Donna H.

Yelp
I absolutely love the garlic and rosemary sourdough!!! I found this in my food box last week, now I have to see what stores here in San Jose carry it, I don't drive or I would be on their front door step every week.

Chris M.

Yelp
I buy Sumano's Ciabatta regularly and there is nothing better than a piece of Ciabiatta toast in the morning with a cup of coffee. The bread is crispy and crunchy and the flavor is out of this world. I gave my grandson a piece of Sumano's toast and he said "Nana, this is the best piece of toast I've ever had." And it is true! Thank you Sumano's for making such a magical loaf of bread. DELICIOUS!
google avatar

Amia R.

Yelp
They make the best bread in Santa Cruz County! My favorite is the seeded sourdough one, but they have many different kinds that will fit your tastes. They sell at local Safeways, Whole Foods, New Leafs, etc.
google avatar

Pat C.

Yelp
I love love love their bread - I get it from my local Safeway and Raley's. One of the few breads on the shelves where you can read and understand ALL the ingredients. Our family favorite - Ciabatta., but honestly you cannot go wrong.

Yelp
I want to give a shout-out to the delivery guy at The Windmill Market in San Juan Bautista. He went above and beyond today and made sure I got fresh loaf of Sliced Sourdough bread. Thanks for caring!

John S.

Yelp
I've been a fan of their Sourdough for a long, long time. My only complaint was that the bread got 'stale' soon after it was opened and was only good as toast (still great). Now that they're using thicker wrapper, the bread stays fresh for days. Way to go, Sumano's! Five Stars.

Debil Q.

Yelp
Living in the middle of nowhere must have some perks. A chunk of Sumanos bread, a bit of butter and cup of coffee equals perfection. With my homemade apricot jelly, it becomes a private pleasure. From outer crust texture to interior paradise of bubbly, spongy love, the high quality has been consistent and tasty. I find no fault other than Safeway doesn't always have my most current favorite yet it motivates to dive into a new loaf texture. Very happy!
google avatar

Sam T.

Yelp
Just so people know, this is the bakery and you cannot purchase anything. We were excited to stop by but a truck driver informed us that they don't sell any bread at this location. Hopefully this will save someone the time and effort! 5 stars only because the bread is always very good.

Deborah Y.

Yelp
First Sumanos' bread purchased at Whole Foods Redwood City, sliced ciabatta. Love it! The fact that there are no preservatives or modifiers will keep me buying their bread. Thank you for your wonderful product!
google avatar

David N.

Yelp
By far the best sourdough anywhere in the the Bay Area! Deliciously chewy, perfectly sour, tender smooth interior, and perfect crust!

Yelp
LOVE YOU Sumano's Bakery!!! I just discovered your bread by accident from a store in South Pasadena named Grassroots. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for making bread without chemicals. For YEARS I have been looking are reading at all the chemicals all that bread the normal local stores carry and til this day I'm still in SHOCK to see what we are being fed and it makes me sick, and every time i go to vons or ralphs I wonderered how I can get a hold of simple fresh bread without chemicals that my kids and I can eat. I am going to do some more research about your company because I am also wondering if you make hot dog buns as well. Thank you again and keep up the good work in making fantastic products like this.

R L.

Yelp
Holy cow! We picked up 2 loaves Sweet Seeded in Monterey and I am desperate to get a regular supply of this shipped to us. Wonderful fresh bread, fabulous fabulous toast. Can't do my morning coffee without it!
google avatar

Hilary W.

Yelp
Wow! Best sourdough I have tried and now the only bread we eat in our house. I only wish they had sourdough hamburger buns.
google avatar

Carl M.

Yelp
I prefer Sumano's sourdough bread over the socalled gourmet brands like SaraLee,Boudins, Francisco. Absolutely the best but on the downside I've only found it in Safeway and NobHill markets.

Yelp
I grew up in Watsonville on Mighty Nice Bakery french bread. I moved to San Jose and eventually learned that Mighty Nice closed. One day I saw a loaf of Sumano's Bakery Watsonville Sourdough and found it even better than the old Mighty Nice Bakery. The Ciabatta sandwich loaf is to die for. I keep one in the freezer so I don't run out. Toasted with butter and a cup of tea is perfection. I am so glad that Sumano's bread is so good and available in San Jose and I hope the business lasts longer than I do!

Thaddeus G.

Yelp
The worst bakery In Santa Cruz County - possibly in California! One reviewer said that the bread is better than Sara Lee! Sara Lee bread is frozen, soggy, and flavorless, so yeah just a bit better than Sara Lee, not high praise in my book! The breads are consistently undercooked, flabby (and bread should not be flabby), and 4 out of 5 times there is unbaked RAW dough in the middle!!!! I don't understand how these people stay in business! Hey Sumano's - take the money you have from selling people bad baked goods and hire some REAL BAKERS with REAL TRAINING!!!! Absolutely terrible - YUCK!
google avatar

Garrett C.

Yelp
My favorite bread. I drive from southern California up to pick up a few loaves now and again. I love their sourdough. You literally cannot get sourdough in SoCal.

Ed H.

Yelp
Most excellent local sourdough bread. Always on our counter. Not much else to say. When we get this at its peak softness, we simply cannot resist it.
google avatar

Carl B.

Yelp
We've been enjoying Sumano's breads for years. My favorites are the Watsonville sourdough and the ciabatta. Hard to beat!
google avatar

Juanita D.

Yelp
Long grain bread is delicious! This place is a hidden gem! I am so impressed with their quality and I thought it was made by Japanese professional baker. Must try. Let their breads speak to you. I put 4 stars just for leaving a room for others to search and build their reputation.

Yelp
WOW! We were camping at Sea Cliff State Beach in Aptos and realized we had all the fix-ins for spaghetti but no french bread. I headed up the little hill just hoping to get some sort of french bread with out going to Safeway and found a small store at the top...he had everything! He also had fresh sourdough round loafs. What a treat!!! The bread is excellent!!! I bought it 4 days ago...we are now home and just finished off the loaf....feeling sad I don't live closer. You can't go wrong with this bakery for sure....I would love to see what else they have! I'm giving you 5 stars because I only thought Boudin's had the best sourdough....I stand corrected.
google avatar

Yelp
people good bread fun to work for they'll be moving to Gilroy soon beautiful location beautiful Bakery can't wait best sourdough bread this side of the Bay Bridge

Leta N.

Yelp
the 9-grain and multi-grain have been my go-to bread for years...I love this bread but...recently the loaf ($5.69 Nob Hill) seems to be getting shorter!! since I don't have an OLDER loaf to compare...how much shorter is the loaf now than say, a year ago????? 4 stars cuz loaf is short!

Yelp
i was raised in the salinas valley, so GOOD sourdough bread was never a problem. then in the early 80's my job shipped me to southern california and i have been on a seek & find mission ever since! a few years back i went home to salinas to visit family & they served watsonville sourdough with dinner....i thought i had died & gone to heaven! that visit we brought home 3 loaves & dolled them out sparingly from the freezer. now everytime we go home to salinas, we stop by nobhill & purchase at least 8 loaves! i have never been able to find it here in so-cal... so some how we need to get it south .... please :)

Anita Austin D.

Yelp
Where has Watsonville Sourdough been hiding in all of these years? Just happened upon it in a Safeway in Santa Clara the other day, as I have been searching for this very kind of sour dough bread FOREVER!! The name among the sourdoughs...Watsonville...caught my eye as I was raised in Salinas many, many years ago. What a find! Now whenever I am at this Safeway, never leave without a loaf to put in the freezer-------it goes like hotcakes and it is only me!

Lindie B.

Yelp
Sumano's (we call it Watsonville) Sourdough, is the best available.. without exception. We've tried every other sour dough offering available to us. We live in San Jose, and as far as I know, the only place to get it here is Zanattos - but even tho they get daily delivers (yum fresh bread), some days they run out early, so be prepared. Before we discovered Sumano's, we'e gone so far as to drive to SF, to get a decent loaf of bread.. but even the bread we've purchased there, just doesn't compare. Most flea markets in our area also sell sourdough.. Acme, Beckmans etc, and while Beckmans is fairly good there is just no comparison to Sumanos. My son lives in Texas, and trust me there is no good sour dough there.. so he begs for and gets a monthly care package of Sumanos sourdough sandwich bread, a baguette, and if in stock, some cracked wheat sourdough. Ok.. obviously I'm just crazed about this bread. Since it's a warm day, our dinner tonight will be a Sumano's baquette, cambazola blue cheese, a variety of apples, grapes, sharp cheddar, and italian salami.. and of course some wine, don't forget the wine. Also makes for the PERFECT picnic. Oh, and if you live in San Jose, and have never shopped at Zanattos, do yourself a favor and check it out. They have the best meat counter in town, excellent quality meats, they grind their hamburger on site (no pink slime there). They do custom orders, and have an excellent selection of various entrees, that require minimal cooking, and no one but you will know that gourmet meal wasn't entirely of your own creation.
